Maddy made her way to the back door. She wasn't stupid. She knew that the werewolves were much stronger than her. One werewolf, she could probably handle but if they came in a pack, she'd be dead before she could say 'werewolf'. Maddy tiptoed outside through the backdoor and she saw two werewolves waiting a few feet away, leaning on some trees. She winced as she heard a huge crash from behind that sounded like the door falling off.
Maddy's house was surrounded by a huge garden. Whatever love her mom had for gardening hadn't been passed down to Maddy but right now it provided the perfect cover. Maddy used the tall tress as cover, feeling like the sneakiest criminal ever. Her heart was thumping so loud that she was afraid that it would give away her location. She crept behind the tree where one of them was leaning, shuddering when she saw the number of ants crawling on the tree. Maddy had never been a fan of insects.
The guards were in their human form, which made it easier for her. She didn't know the weak spots of a wolf, but one kick at the nuts and the guards will go down, groaning.
"You smell that? The girl is here somewhere."
Maddy's breath hitched. Shit. She had completely forgotten that werewolves had supersmell. Was that even a word? Maddy made a note to check it once she got out of this mess. What? She was a writer. She couldn't help being obsessed with words.
"Obviously, this place would smell like her. It is her house, you idiot."
"Yeah, you are right."
Maddy almost gave herself away by laughing. Although werewolves were strong physically, they clearly didn't get any intelligence.
There was no way to knock out one of them without alerting the other, so Maddy didn't bother maintaining stealth anymore. She quickly came out of hiding and kicked one of the werewolves in the nuts. To make sure that she he stays down she stabbed him in the stomach using the silver spoon and he immediately crumpled down on the floor. The wound wasn't deep enough to kill him, but judging by his reaction it hurt a lot. Maddy didn't waste any time.
Maddy turned around to find the second guy aiming a punch right at her. Reflexively, Maddy dodged it at the last moment. Whatever lack of brains the werewolves had, they made it up with a bunch of muscles. The werewolves clearly hadn't expected her to try and escape as both the werewolves standing on guard, though filled with muscles seemed to be bad at fighting. The second guy had a horrible stance and he wasn't defending himself well.
Maddy had always been the smallest among the other students in her Karate class as the others were tall and strong, like Leia. Maddy was good at Karate, maybe even the best if they all had her small physique, but since all of them were huger than her, she needed to rely on her wits. For once, Maddy felt grateful that she had been training with people twice her size. These werewolves too, were much larger than her but she was used to being the smallest.
On seeing that Maddy had dodged his punch, the werewolf quickly shifted to his wolf form and pounced on her. Unlike last time, Maddy wasn't able to dodge him. He landed on top of her, making her fall down on the ground. In Karate, that was one of the most disadvantageous positions and Maddy knew that she had screwed up the fight big time. She tried pushing him off but he didn't budge.
Maddy had to bite her inner cheeks to stop herself from screaming out loud and alerting the others, as the wolf managed to get a chunk of flesh from her right shoulder. Her shoulder was burning and she couldn't move her right hand because of the searing pain. Using her left hand, she desperately pushed her finger into the wolf's eye. The wolf howled out loud in pain. Maddy used her legs to push the wolf away, while it was vulnerable. Using her left hand, she carried her right hand and tried to run away. Why the hell did dreams hurt this much?
Her eyesight was turning blurry with tears as she blindly ran. She didn't get very far before she heard the sound of wolves running behind her. Maddy slowed down. There was no point in trying to run away. She knew she was outnumbered and she had managed to lose the spoon and fork during the struggle.
Thinking on her feet, she took out the ring from her right finger and she put it in her mouth, making sure that the werewolves didn't see her doing that. She then turned to the werewolves and raised her hands in surrender. One of them started to shift back to a human. According to the stories, when a werewolf shifts back, they are usually naked, so Maddy quickly closed her eyes. She didn't want to scar her eyes.
"Search her."
Maddy felt their hands tapping on her pockets and taking out her phone. Maddy prayed they wouldn't check her mouth. It would be nice to have something to protect herself, even if it is something as small as a ring.
"She had a spoon and a fork that has fallen down there. That's it."
Maddy peered through her eyes, and after making sure that they had clothes on, she opened her eyes. There were three werewolves in human form besides the two who had been outside. One of them had red hair, the other had dark brown hair while the third was bald. The three werewolves were looking at the spoon and fork that was on the ground with distaste. They didn't want to pick up the weapon and burn themselves. Taking advantage of the situation, she tried to grab the fork but a hand grabbed her right arm before she could even move.
"I told you to search properly! She is clearly smarter than the average humans. She has a watch. This could be a weapon of some sort," the bald one who was probably the leader, barked.
Immediately the red-haired guy took the watch she had gifted to Leia and threw it on the ground. The bald guy then grabbed her hands and started pulling her towards the truck. Maddy cried out in pain as they pulled her right hand but didn't say anything. If she opened her mouth, the ring would be revealed. With tears streaming down her face, she followed them. She must have looked pathetic but she no longer cared. It was too much for her to comprehend.
Maddy examined the back of the truck where she had been dumped. It was covered from all sides and the doors were bolted. As soon as her kidnappers had left her alone, she spit the ring out and cradled her arm. They didn't tie her up or anything but she couldn't do anything inside the truck. They had taken everything she had, her watch, her phone. The only thing she had was her mom's ring. Having nothing to do Maddy sat in a corner of the car and tried to distract herself from the fact that her shoulder had nearly been teared off by a fricking wolf.
Maddy woke up to find herself in the same place. She must have fallen asleep in her dream. Was that even possible? Maddy slowly got up to realize that her shoulder was no longer hurting. She turned her head to inspect the wound, only to find that the wound had mostly healed and now looked as harmless as a paper cut. Must be some sort of werewolf magic.
A thought slowly creeped into her mind. What if this wasn't a dream? And why hadn't she thought of this earlier? Oh right, she was being chased by werewolves. Maddy pinched herself to see if she was dreaming. Shad read somewhere that if after pinching yourself, you do not feel any pain your brain realizes that it's a dream and not a real-life situation. It wasn't just a phrase but scientifically proven too.
Unfortunately for her, she felt the sharp sting of the pinch and her eyes widened. She wasn't 100% sure whether it was a real-life situation or not but she couldn't risk getting killed. With renewed desperation, Maddy started hitting the walls of the truck, trying to grab the attention of any passersby. The door of the cargo bed opened and in came the red-haired kidnapper. Without waiting, Maddy attacked him. She was no longer hurting from the wound in her shoulder and if this was a real-life situation, she would need to stay alive. She threw her body on top of the surprised werewolf and using her momentum she pushed him to the ground. She doubted she would have been able to move him by an inch had he suspected that she was going to attack. The werewolf grunted and fell on his butt.
However, she didn't make it very far before he caught her.
"You have got some spirit, human."
"Let me go! I don't know why you took me but I know I didn't do anything to piss you people off. Hell, I didn't even know you people existed!"
The guy continued to drag her back to the truck. "Boss wanted us to kidnap you."
"You mean the bald guy?" Maddy asked casually, changing her tactics and trying to get answers.
"No, I-" he stops abruptly.
"I shouldn't have said that. Boss is going to be mad."
Maddy smiled inwardly thinking about how he sounded like Hagrid.
'Stop it Maddy. This isn't the right to make book references,' Maddy chided herself.
"What is going on here?"
Maddy and the red-haired werewolf turned to find the leader, and he did not look pleased.
"She tried to escape."
The leader glared at her and gestured towards the red-haired guy.
"Then, knock her out. We can't have her causing trouble."
Before Maddy could protest, someone hit her hard on the back of her head and then, there was only darkness.
