Recap: I turned out the one lamp that was left and crawled into the covers next to Sam. He was already asleep. They must still be tired from their last hunt. Moving around gently until I was comfortable, I finally laid my head down and tried to sleep.
Only...
I couldn't.
My thoughts just kept going back to that family. I was worried about what would become of them. I mean, those kids still had an entire life behind them. The mother and father still had so much to live for as well. And she was pregnant with another no less...
I just felt so bad.
I crawled out of the bed and headed towards the bathroom once again, hoping that maybe a warm shower would help me relax. I turned up the hot water as high as I could take and hopped in.
I must've been in there for an hour before I finally got out. Miraculously, there was still hot water.
I toweled off and put my hair in a ponytail before pulling my clothes back on. Turning out the light, I opened the door only to see a dark figure sitting on the couch, one that wasn't Sam or Dean. I was about to scream before I realized that it was only Cas. My heart pounded from the fright but I walked over and sat next to him anyway.
"Hey, Cas," I whispered.
He looked at me and tilted his head in confusion.
"Why aren't you sleeping? Humans need their rest."
I sighed and looked at the stains in the carpet.
"I assume you know all about the case we're on?"
He nodded, so I continued.
"Well, it's probably silly, but I can't stop thinking about the family. I... they just had so much left to do in life..."
He finally straightened his head and a look of realization crossed his face.
"Ah, I see. Let me take you somewhere."
Without any more warning or detail, he placed his hand on my shoulder and off we went.
Seconds later we appeared in a very long hallway that looked like it never ended. There were doors all along both sides of the hallway and each was labeled with a name, sometimes multiple. And everything in sight was a brilliant almost blinding white. I stared in awe, my mouth hanging open.
"Is this..."
I looked over at Cas and he nodded a smile gracing his face at my astonishment. It was so adorable I almost awed.
"Heaven."
He started walking and I followed right behind him, staring at every door and name to see if I could recognize any. Finally, he stopped in front of a door with five names. I immediately recognized four of them. They belonged to the family that had died. But, why five?
"Cas? Why are there fives names? There were only fou- ... oh, the baby."
"Yes."
"But, how does he have a name when he wasn't even born yet."
"The parents had already picked out names."
"Oh..."
He motioned for me to open the door and I hesitated but did so. I didn't step in but I really didn't have to. From where we were we could see perfectly.
In the room, it was like being outside. The sun was shining brightly in a bright blue sky with white clouds dotting it. There was a beautiful two-story house with a porch surrounded by a white fence. The grass was a beautiful shade of green and looked as if it had just been cut, the air even filled with the scent of freshly cut grass and barbeque. Finally looking past the scenery, I saw the family. The father was standing behind a grill, explaining the barbeque smell. The little girl and boy were running around the yard chasing each other. There was a dog chasing them as well. They must have had a dog as well... And the mother sat on a chair underneath the porch's roof in the shade with a tiny baby in her arms. Everyone had smiles on their faces.
I shut the door quietly, not wanting to disturb them and turned to Cas. He was smiling softly matching the expression I had on my own face.
"They look so happy..." I said.
"They are."
I gently and slowly wrapped my arms around Cas, knowing that he still wasn't quite used to it, but wanting to thank him somehow.
"You're welcome Sky. Their lives may have ended early, but what they did have was filled with happiness and love. Though short, they had wonderful lives."
I nodded against his chest before pulling back.
"They sure did."
"Let's go back."
I nodded and Cas took us back to the motel room. I thanked Cas again, using words this time, before crawling back into the bed slowly, still trying not to wake Sam. He shuffled a bit but didn't wake up. It didn't take me long to fall asleep now knowing how happy the family was.
It ended up being one of the best nights of sleep I had ever gotten, dreaming about my own family. Though we weren't quite as happy, we loved each other just as much.
