Chapter Five
"Where were you the day that Isabella Johnson was taken?" She asked, looking him straight in the eye.
I bit my tongue to keep me from doing anything. Any look of panic would send immediate suspicion to the cops, and I didn't need anything happening.
I looked back at the man and watched as he quickly tried to come up with what he was doing.
"I- wait. When was she taken?" He asked, barely saving himself.
"Anytime from 7:45 to 8:00. She never made it to high school," she explained.
"Oh, ok. Let's see," The man thought hard, pretending to have to think of what he was doing, "I was getting ready to go to work."
Both cops rose a brow in suspicion at what he had said.
"My notes here tell me that you weren't at work that day. Are you sure you're telling the truth?" She accused, glancing from me to him.
He was silent for a moment before finally answering, "Yes, I'm sure. I was about to leave for work when I got a call from my mother that she was in town and needed my help," he explained.
"She needed my assistance driving her to the hotel she was going to stay at. So I called in sick and went to pick her up. In fact, we were about to see her," he added.
"And why are you visiting her?" She asked.
"Oh yes! She's in town for her birthday, so we're about to go and pick her up and take her to the restaurant I picked out," he concluded, turning away and towards me.
"Put your shoes on while I finish this conversation dear," he told me, sending me a look that showed how lucky I was to have obeyed.
"Of course, father," I responded, slowly standing up from the couch and making my way down the hall into the room I had been in before.
The words tasted bitter on my tongue. Never in my life had I thought I'd call another man "father" after the death of mine.
I wanted to puke at the thought of having this cruel, twisted man as my father, even if he was a fake one.
I opened the door and walked to the shoes, slipping them on and looking in the mirror that hung on one of the walls.
What had my life come to, where I was lying to authority and bouncing from place to place hiding from them?
A tear ran down my cheek as I thought about what the next few days would hold, fearing for them being my last.

Sorry for the short update! Figured that this was a good place to end it, so I did. Hope you enjoyed!
