Stand under my Umbrella
Because, when the sun shines, we shine together,
Peter remembers the day in the car when Tony drops him off at his apartment. They both know that Tony doesn’t have to, but he does. He remembers feeling at home with Tony, the father he never had. Tony cares. So much.
Peter remembers getting his upgraded suit, Tony laughing as Peter marveled over the intricate designing, “Kid, we’re in the field together. We can both be at the top of our games now.” Peter hugged the man, something that took the both of them by surprise, but something that blossomed only the start of a very important relationship.
Told you I’ll be here forever,
It’s the anniversary of Ben Parker’s death. Peter tosses in his sleep, crying out, begging for forgiveness. Tony hears the guttural cries, wasting no time in getting to the boy and gently waking him up. He feels Peter trembling, he’s scared and guilty. The guilt is something that Tony’s shoulders are accustomed to, but Peter’s shouldn’t. The older man pulls his kid on his lap, rocking him back and forth, wiping the tears away, promising him that “I’m here bud, and I’ll always be alright?”
Said I’ll always be your friend,
Turns out Liz didn’t really like him and was just using him. Peter searched for Tony that blearly day, just wanting to go home. Tony immediately noticed the long face and the quietness-that just wasn’t Peter. He asked gently, “Kid, you okay?” Within seconds the waterworks had crashed down and Tony took the crying boy into his arms. He consoled him, making him feel so unbelievably safe and happy. Tony kept holding his hand and making jokes as they drove back to the Tower. At the Tower, Tony dismissed homework, telling Peter that he wasn’t going to school tomorrow and that was final. At the Tower, Tony put on a Disney movie marathon with some warm blankets and Peter’ favorite vanilla ice cream.
“No problemo kiddo.”
Took an oath and Imma stick it out till the end,
“Anything for my kid.”
The time where Peter got shot and Tony consoled him during the stitches because after all he was just a kid that was scared of needles yet he worked so hard to help whomever he could and Tony would rather die than leave the kid on his own. Lord knows what would happen.
Or the time when him and May got into a fight. Tony calmed the boy’s nerves down, washing away his guilt. Tony was always there, and was always going to be there for his kid. End tweet.
Or the time when Peter failed his test and the kid felt so kept calling himself an idiot, Tony showed Peter how incredibly smart he is, how important he is, how essential and amazing and worth it Peter Parker is.
And the time when Peter was so sick he was puking for an hour straight, Tony cancelled his press conference to stay with him and make sure his kid was safe.
And when May died, Tony spent months helping Peter grieve and slowly getting him over. After all, his Irondad was the only family the kid had left. No way in hell was he going to abandon him.
Now it’s raining more than ever,
Tony had always known that Loki wasn’t the only one. If anything, he would be the first one. Seeing Voldemort faced Ebony Maw etched fear right into his heart. And the kid did have a point, “You can’t be a friendly neighborhood Spiderman if there was no neighborhood.” So he let the kid come along.
As annoying as his pop references were, it was the only thing keeping him sane so he was going to let him keep at it.
But here on Titan with the time stone given up to save his life, something’s not right. A select few are turning to ash, disintegrating. Are they dead? But Tony feels his heart drop when he sees that his Peter, his kid, staggers forward, clearly not feeling well. And that’s what the kid says. He latches himself onto Tony and Tony doesn’t care. If anything, he pulls him closer as he gently sets him into a lying position. They both know what’s coming but neither are ready for it. They can’t lose each other, they’re all they have left.
But the unforgivable happens. Peter crumbles to ash in Tony’s trembling arms. Peter’s scared, the damn kid is apologizing. He shouldn’t have to. If anything, he should be apologizing. He scoops the ashes into his hands in his pocket, tears slipping down his face. His Peter, is gone. This can’t be real but the dry, empty atmosphere of Titan forces him to keep himself in reality.
He looks at the one person left, the blue cyborg. She has her face set in steel, already swearing vengeance to her father. After this stunt she is no longer his daughter. All these years wasted on pleasing the man go down the drain. She is going to be the one to kill Thanos. For making her suffer, for making Gamora suffer, the galaxy, for all the suffering he has caused. Or she’ll die trying with her new friend.
Know that we’ll still have each other
In the spaceship which Tony slowly tries to preserve supplies, only one thought consumes his mind. His kid, Peter is gone. And he watched helplessly. The ashes are put in a special container Tony keep with him. Nebula has her own collection of ashes of her fellow Guardians.
He wants to give up, call it quits, let himself die all up here and alone in space, but he can’t. His Peter is alone. And he promised, he swore, he took an oath to keep him safe. He promised he was never going to leave him. And not now, not ever, not even in death.
In the Soul World, he was found by Doctor Strange who had found the other Avengers. He’s crying, he’s scared, alone and utterly terrified. And the wizard understand. He gently carries Peter bridal style not minding as Peter buries his head in his chest imagining that it was Tony. Doctor Strange coaxes Peter into calming down, he’ll be safe, his dad’s looking for him. And that’s the only thing that keeps the young spider from ending it all.
Day by day, only two things remain strong in the their minds. Survival, and each other.
You can stand under my umbrella,
With the help of Captain Marvel, Thanos is defeated and the Soul Stone is cracked, freeing everyone. Little by little everyone starts coming back. The first one is Barnes, who was first to dust. Peter is the last one, staring at everything as if this is fake because they can’t be free, it’s just not possible.
Tony scoops the boy in the warm arms that Peter remembered so well. He’s home. Tony whispers as he runs his fingers through the chocolate colored curls that he missed dearly, “You’re safe now bud. I promise you, you’re safe. I promised I’d keep you safe.” And Peter knows it. He leans contently, letting the presence of his father slowly calm him down.
And it’s Tony who stays awake at night not daring to sleep as he watches Peter sleep. He’s up in case anything happens. He’s not taking any risks anymore. Not today, not ever.
It’s Tony who stays by Peter’s side as he throws up for hours still not having all the dust out of his system. It’s Tony who hums him lullabies to help Peter sleep. It’s Tony who helps Peter Parker find his way again. It’s Tony Stark who’s Peter Parker’s light. Especially the day that Tony officially adopted Peter Parker. Making the rebirth of Peter Parker-Stark.
And it’s Peter Stark who consoles Tony about his nightmares, constantly reminding him that he’s right here, not stuck in the stone. It’s Peter who reminds Tony that he’s doing the best and he isn’t a failure. It’s always Peter Stark who snaps his father out of his panic attacks.
In their darkest hour, they are each other’s light.
Under my umbrella
One night, Peter’s seventeenth birthday, the two spend the day together, going to a waterpark, and then cuddling in bed. Peter thanks Tony for the best day he’s ever had. Tony laughs, “Kiddo, I promised I’d always keep you safe. Fun’s part of that.” He plants a gentle kiss on Peter’s forehead. For one of the first times in Peter’s life curled up in his father’s arms, he feels safe. And he is.
