Lament of the Fallen (part 2)
ACT II: 4 months, 3 days, 05:32:47 after the 4th Honkai Eruption
.
Arc City used to be a technological paradise of its kind. The city had always been prosperous and thus the fact that it still stands comes as a surprise to no one. Currently, there are exactly sixty-seven cities that managed to escape the cataclysmic eruption and keep their people alive. Life for the survivors is an existence filled with pain and loss, with slow ascendance into madness, but it's still life—a fate, not necessarily kinder.
.
"We've entered Arc City. No signs of us being followed or monitored." Rak told Wangnan as the ship began lowering. Gone was the sight of clouds, replaced by the towering buildings of Arc City.
"Roger. Maintain contact with Dr Garam," he turned towards Khun, "Secure the perimeters. We'll find that icky Lurker guy and get this over with," he watched his Pocket and frowned, "Can't they just send the intel to me by email or EMILY? This is so stupid and old school!"
Khun let out a sigh and got closer to the glass window. Usually being close to honkai energy made his skin tingle, the Herrscher inside him giddy with excitement at returning home. Now that it was gone, he found himself missing the feeling. Perhaps, if the Herrscher was here, it would be easier to locate Bam and put an end to all of this.
"It's bigger than I thought. Such cities were a rare sight even before the Eruption."
"Well, when more Honkai Beasts appeared, people abandoned their homes and moved into cities where there's real protection. With technologies and resources becoming more centralized, it was only a matter of time for these cities to grow into megalopolises."
"Then, finding a person here is like finding a needle in the haystack, huh?" He gave the principal a humourless laugh. Then he looked at the vast city below them and sighed softly. Three seconds. He would only give into self-pity for three seconds. "Don't worry, Bam. I'll find you."
.
In spite of Arc's city's state, the road they had been led to did not belong in any 'thriving' place. The quietness spread thin—not a soul in sight. Instead, piles of metal were scattered around, evidence of smoke around them showing that the disaster was recent. Khun approached one and nudged it with his foot.
"Destroyed mechs everywhere," mechs that must have belonged to Anti-Entropy.
"Lurker." Principal Wagnang called out, a few feet away from them. Both Khun and Rak rushed to his side but instead of finding the informant, they merely found his body. He looked more like he was asleep than dead save it for a minor cut on his torso. Clean and precise, hidden beneath layers of armour. Khun wouldn't be surprised if they had sliced him in half.
"This snake might be an intel dealer, but he's still a prominent figure in Arc City," Rak said, voicing their own thoughts out loud, "Only Schiksal would dare do something like this."
"Every moment we spent here is dangerous."
"But if Schiksal is here, there's a chance Bam is as well."
"Yeah! We're not leaving the black turtle!"
"Of course, we aren't leaving Bam. But we can't jump headfirst!"
Khun glanced at Lurker's body—at what it meant for Schicksal—and balled his hands in a fist.
.
He dragged his feet on the floor, crouching from time to time to catch his breath. In the peace and quiet, the only sound to be heard was his heart's beating. Arc City; a deserted haven. Even so, he could clearly make out the scent of bubblegum from his west side. Wangnan had been right all along. No surprises there but Khun would have loved for just one thing to go their way. Picking up his pace, he made a swift turn at an alley and glued himself on the side of the wall. His fingers curled against his sword and soon the blade had almost lunged itself into someone's neck.
"An ambush? My, mister Khun, I thought you were more honourable than that." Yura told him as she used her index to lower the blade.
Khun huffed and raised it back up drawing blood from the girl's neck, "I never claimed to be honorable. If, however, you think I'll spare you for old time's sake after what you did to Bam, you clearly didn't know me at all."
Yura chuckled. The S Rank and he had never really gotten along. She was always trailing after someone like an overeager puppy without other personality traits. Of course, Khun saw her for what she was; an opportunist. Out of everyone in Schiksal, Yura stuck closer to the Overseer and whoever he deemed important. For as long as Khun had been in St. Freya, the girl had been on Schiksal's strongest Valkyrie's beck and call as well as the Principal's.
"I'm curious. How did you realize I was here?"
"The person that killed Lurker didn't finish the job properly. That means that either they thought they had destroyed the biochip and erased all clues or that they failed to access it," he lowered his weapon, "and thought to wait for someone else to crack it."
"How smart. But where is Principal Wangnan? Did he get what he wanted and leave you here to stall me?"
"Stall? You're so full of yourself."
With a sudden burst of motion, she lunged forward, the blade of her scythe arcing toward him like a streak of black lightning. He barely had time to react, raising his sword to block. The impact rang out like a gunshot, the force of it sending him stumbling back.
"Too slow," she taunted, spinning the scythe and bringing it around for another strike. This time, the blade carved through the air with a high-pitched whistle, aiming for his side. He twisted away at the last moment, the tip of the scythe grazing his jacket, leaving a clean tear. He countered, his sword darting forward in a thrust. She danced back with a fluid grace, her movements almost serpentine. The scythe twirled in her hands like an extension of her body, always ready to strike.
"Come on, is that all you've got?" she laughed, her voice ringing out like a predator playing with its prey, "I always thought you survived this long thanks to your little Gem."
His jaw tightened. He gripped the sword with both hands, his knuckles whitening. With a sharp exhale, he rushed forward, feinting left before slashing upward. She blocked easily, but his momentum pushed her back a step.
"Huh," she muttered, her smirk faltering for the first time. "Now I know why the Overseer takes such an unusual interest in the Far East Branch. You boys never fail to surprise."
She retaliated with a sweeping arc, forcing him to duck. The scythe's blade clanged against the wall, sending sparks flying. Seizing the opportunity, he lunged, aiming for her exposed side. Her eyes widened as she twisted her body, but the tip of his sword caught her arm, slicing through the fabric of her sleeve and drawing a thin line of blood.
She hissed, more out of irritation than pain. "Lucky shot."
The tide of the battle shifted. He pressed the attack, his strikes growing faster and more precise. She parried each one, but her movements were no longer effortless. He was learning, adapting to her rhythm. For every strike she deflected, another came closer to breaking through her defence. "I was afraid of getting addicted to my Herrscher powers but I finally understood how weak and pathetic I was when I failed to protect those I care about. I will no longer hold back," another slash, "Bam is mine to protect!"
"Enough," Yura snapped, planting her foot and swinging the scythe with enough force to cleave through the wall behind him. He barely managed to roll away, the blade missing him by inches. As he scrambled to his feet, she loomed over him, her smirk returning. "Stubbornness is not necessarily a virtue. Your power has failed you. Further resistance will only bring more pain. "
He waited for her next move but it never came.
.
The battleship was in chaos. Lurker, or rather a Lurker, had been alive. They were meant to meet with Anti-Entropy's sovereign, Enryu, but that, too, had been disrupted by Hansung's reappearance. The picture of the man flashed on the screen and Khun's stomach tightened. He could only imagine how Rak felt.
"Your dad? I don't see the resemblance." Urek told them, trying to lighten up the mood.
"Creator," Rak corrected, "and it doesn't matter."
"Either way, Hansung is an ex-member of the organisation. Whatever he wants might be worth our while."
"I'd rather focus on searching for Bam." It had been four months and they weren't anywhere nearer than when they started. And with Schiksal close behind them, Khun couldn't risk losing any more time.
"Urek is right, we need to approach Hansung first. He might have leads about Bam, leads that he wouldn't share with Schiksal but he would with us," Garam said before glancing at Khun, "He had crossed paths with your sister too, hadn't he?"
"He worked with her," he shot back, "he's probably the real culprit behind the scandal."
Not that it mattered. If Maria had disappeared, it meant she couldn't or didn't want to prove her innocence. And if that was how she saw things, how she saw Aguero, there was no point in crying over spilt milk.
.
"Splitting up will save us time," Principal Wagnang said at the end of his speech. Khun disagreed-even if he had no plans of saying so but it was the only option they had. Anti-Entropy, and Wagnang, wanted to hear what Hansung wanted to say and both Rak and he refused to let the search for Bam be paused. In the end, it was either splitting up or doing nothing. The only downside was that Rak would have to be in the team reaching out to Hansung, along with Urek and Wagnang, and retrieving the Gem of Desire whereas Khun and Garam would return to HQ and pick up on Bam's trail.
"You'll be careful, blue turtle. That crazy turtle has the chip and will be tracking the black turtle closely. You might have to deal with her again."
Khun smiled, slowly nudging his friend's shoulder, "As if I'd let her get any close."
"She defeated you last time!"
"There was no clear winner!"
"So you're both losers, then!"
"You!" he stopped himself pinching the bridge of his nose. A small huff escaped his lips. They needed this. Both of them. "Don't strain yourself too much, gator."
"Of course. Can't have you without your great Leader!"
Yes, he thought, their little team really couldn't do without its core members.
.
Roen Yuia is a scrawny girl with overly bright hair and the type of cheerful attitude that Khun never truly got. When he had first seen her—another first year in St. Freya—he never thought they'd cross paths again. Khun was steadily chasing after the ultimate rank, chasing after Bam who wanted to become an S rank like his mother, and Roen had gotten into the school by a hair. Still, between then and now, the girl had managed to find herself in one of Schiksal's most prestige Valkyrie teams—the Immortal Blades—all while Khun lost his rank, his drive, his everything.
Had Roen been half as a bastard as he was, she would most likely taunt him.
"Miss Yura," she tells him instead and hands him another chip, "she believes this will interest you."
"We do not accept gifts from Schiksal."
"It's off the record, Mr Khun." her tone has off a little robotic only breaking a little in the end as she answers his questions. She is scared of him. Or rather she is scared of what she's doing which can only mean she's telling the truth. Whatever Yura has inside this chip is information the Overseer doesn't want them to have. For the first time since that dreadful day, he feels hopeful.
.
The blade rests on Yura's shoulder. Khun isn't a fool—he knows it's only there because the older Valkyrie allows it—but it still feels good to have the upper hand even if it's an illusion. He briefly entertains the idea of striking her, of getting his pointless revenge, but he is quick to shrug off the idea. If there's a chance Yura knows something about Bam, he won't waste the lead to be petty.
"Mister Khun, it's been such a long time."
Khun snorts, "I got your message."
"Then it appears Lady Luck is still on my side and help has arrived," she turns her head to face him, "Did Dr. Garam come along?"
"We prepared for the worst once we got your message," he pushes the blade nearer her neck, "Give me one good reason to trust you."
Yura openly laughs at him. It makes him trust her even less. Raising a perfectly manicured nail, she pushes the sharp edge away from her. It helps remind him that they're nothing more than a struggling flee when it comes to Schiksal. No matter how much he wants to believe they could be a threat, he knows the only reason the 'traitors' are alive is that despite everything cruel and unjust that makes the Overseer there is also love for his grandson. Not that if the Principal ever became a threat, the Overseer would spare him but rather that in his eyes this is a whim.
"Lying is unwise, especially when lives are in danger." The words 'and Bam' are at the tip of his tongue but he lets her continue, "Look around, mister Khun, there is no ambush. The serum has weakened me and placed me at your mercy. This deal is as real as it can be."
Seeing the look of uncertainty in his eyes, the girl sighed and pressed the projector button on her battlesuit. The sound quality was bad as was the image but Khun could faintly make up Bam's silhouette. His hair had grown but the fighting style could only be his. As he battled a hooded figure, Yura aided him.
"Help me find the antidote and I'll tell you where he is." He must have let his relief show because Yura took one look at him and smiled, "I'm pleased that we've reached an amicable agreement. I'm counting on you."
Reaching into his back pocket, he took out the serum Garam had made and tossed it to Yura. The girl, albeit surprised, took it immediately. "I've done what you asked for. Time to live up to your end of the bargain."
"The World Serpent has a Honkai research facility located deep under this biomedical park. Mister Bam should be imprisoned there. I will send you the map and route," she raised her sleeve and stabbed her arm with the needle. However, before she could inject the serum Khun raised his blade again against her neck. "And your reason for doing this?"
"I need one more thing."
"Hm?"
"Lurker's eye." Garam had said it would be useful for containing the damage the World Serpent had done to the ARC City. Seeing how Schiksal still held on to it, he was inclined to agree.
Yura reaches into her Pocket and throws the mechanical eye at him, "A gentle reminder, Mister Khun. For every moment you delay your rescue, you extend Mister Bam's suffering." —Khun clenched his fist— "I'm afraid I have to bid you farewell. Hopefully, you will not press your blade against my neck next time we meet."
"I don't have time for this," he mumbled to himself and went the other way. Then, a loud noise began shaking the entire building.
.
He watched the void engulf the honkai beast, shattering it into hundreds of black pieces. The smoke around the scenery would make anyone choke but Khun felt like he could breathe easily for the first time. The figure in front of him made a sharp turn and aimed their gun at him. Khun continued breathing, taking everything fully.
"Bam!"
Bam turns to look at him and despite the adrenaline of the reunion, he can't ignore his dearest friend's gaze. There had been countless nights when Khun would lie awake and dream of a reunion but never had he expected to look at him like that. Sometimes, in his dream, Bam looked equally relieved, love radiating in the corner of his lips while others he looked like always—like those days at St. Freya. He never, not once, looked at him with anger.
"Khun," and for a second his gaze softens before it goes back to a quiet rage, "What are you doing? You shouldn't be here! This place is dangerous!"
Khun watched the pieces fall into place. It had been anger all right but it had never been about him. Bam was angry with himself, disappointed, worried, and stuck in a cycle of grief. He could clearly see the thoughts in his head—the self-blame. Wordlessly, he rushed to hug him burying his head in the nape of his neck. He held as tightly as he could, fearing that Bam would slip away at first chance.
"You're hurt," he whispered, the smell of burnt flesh still evident, "I'll take you back to Hyperion. Principal Wagnang, Rak, everyone is waiting for you."
"No," Bam whispered, releasing himself from Khun's grasp, "I can't go back, Khun."
"Bam—"
"I'm sorry. I can't go back. I can't put you all in danger again."
He could argue. He didn't have to be prepared to disagree with him. It hadn't been his fault the Herrscher awoke—no one would blame him. And if, somehow, danger found them again Khun would gladly take the leap straight into hell. Still, he knew those promises would only worsen Bam's guilt.
"Give me some time, Khun. We must leave this place quickly. There is a disaster about to strike and I need to stop it," he paused, "before we can talk about other things."
Khun nodded. Yes, as long as he was still in Bam's vicinity, they had all the time in the world.
.
"In the lab, that guy with the mask mentioned their plans. Besides making a vaccine to wake up the Stigmata in people's bodies, they're also creating a Honkai disaster that will affect the entire city to activate them."
He ran a little faster to catch up to Bam, "No details about the time or place? Even if we destroy this entire base, they can still go on with their plan."
"I know where it is," another voice said. Khun reached for Bam's hand and held him back, letting himself get in between them and the intruder. "Looks like Mr Grace has been well. I'm so relieved."
"Don't even think about taking him away from me!"
"Calm down, won't you? I've already told you we're on the same team." Yura sighed dramatically, "This city has been closely monitoring Honkai energy usage, anything that may cause large-scale reactions shouldn't be found. Except, of course, if they entered legally with, let's say, those large vehicles that are powered by that energy. Schiksal's EOS for example."
"They stole it."
Yura flashed a smile at Bam like a proud teacher. "They placed the engine on the top of the signal tower for maximum effect. Remove the protective cover, have the engine run in overload for a while and then," she blew in her fingers, "boom!"
"We can't stay here any longer." Before any of them had the chance to speak, a giant shadow approached them blocking their view. The beast reemerged in the air and raised its claws.
"Go, I'll distract it." she pulled out her scythe, "Consider us even, Mr Grace."
.
His heart was pounding loudly. A Honkai explosion would evaporate them in the spot. He had just gotten Bam back, he couldn't afford to lose him again. If his Herrscher persona was there he could probably stop the disaster. He could take Bam home. Now instead of an all-powerful being, Bam was stuck with Khun whose brain could only get them that far.
As on cue, a sharp arrow landed on the wall next to them grazing his ear.
"Khun!"
Another arrow was shot through the dark, this time landing itself in his abondment. He groaned as his body gave out sending him to the ground. Bam was at his side in seconds screaming his name. "I'm fine," he told him, "Don't let me distract you from your mission."
"I'll come back and get you, I promise!"
.
The explosion is but a firework in the sky and Bam is falling fastly and Khun can't run fast enough—
.
The Tree sprouts.
"Bam!"
.
He kept swinging his blade with all his might, managing to escape the mechs' wrath. He needed to find Bam quickly before Schiksal or World Serpent got their hands on him again. The Tree in front of him grew even bigger, its branches sprouting all over the place engulfing Bam's fallen form. Gathering all his power, he sprinted again managing to get a full view.
However, before he could touch the Tree a blue light shone from the sky followed by a falling lance. The light slowly faded revealing not only the magnificent weapon but also a blonde Valkyrie towering over it.
"You," he whispered breathlessly. It all made sense now. The lance—Abyss Flower—and the Tree, a part of a Bubble World, there was only one person who was known to have such power. "You're the Valkyrie they call Icarus."
The wielder of the 6th Divine Key and the ace S-rank Valkyrie of Schiksal. Everyone who knew of Schiksal also knew of Icarus' fearsome exploits. And now, the legend of the organisation was the only thing between him and Bam.
"Greetings, Mr Khun," she said as she got a hold of her lance, "my orders are to retrieve Bam Grace."
He drew a deep breath and tightly gripped his weapon, "You will not take him. You can't take Bam away!"
"Hm," she laughed, "let's see if I can."
Khun surged forward, his sword raised high, but Icarus was already moving. She pivoted, her lance spinning in her hands with practised ease. The weapon seemed an extension of her body, and she brought its blunt end crashing down toward Khun's head. He barely managed to dodge, stumbling back as the lance struck the ground where he had just stood, sending up a spray of dirt.
"It's over, mister Khun," she murmured, her voice cutting through the air like a blade, "You stand no chance against me."
Khun gritted his teeth and advanced again, this time feinting to her left before slashing toward her right. "Our fight isn't over yet. I will not let you take Bam away."
The blonde didn't flinch. Instead, she sidestepped, her movements fluid and precise. The tip of her lance darted forward, a blur of silver that forced him to parry awkwardly. The clash of metal echoed, and the impact rattled Khun's arm. He winced.
Icarus pressed her advantage, spinning the lance in a tight arc. The blunt end slammed into his ribs with a hollow thud, sending him staggering. He gasped for air, pain flashing across his face.
"I like that look in your eyes," she said, almost lazily, as she advanced with measured steps. "But your powers fail to match your will."
Khun roared, frustration fueling his next attack. He lunged, putting all his weight into a downward slash aimed at her shoulder. For a brief moment, it seemed as though he might land a blow—but Icarus was faster. She shifted her grip, raising the shaft of her lance to catch the blade mid-swing. The force of the clash sent vibrations up both their arms, but only Icarus held firm, her muscles barely straining.
With a sharp twist, she disarmed him. Khun's sword clattered to the ground, and before he could recover, she drove the butt of her lance into his chest. The impact sent him sprawling onto his back, gasping for breath as he stared up at her.
Icarus planted the tip of her lance in the dirt beside him, leaning on it casually as though she hadn't just dismantled her opponent in mere moments. She looked down at him, her expression one of mild disappointment. She leapt into the sky, Bam in her arms, leaving a bright afterburner trail behind her.
Soon, that too disappeared leaving Khun alone in the middle of the street. Khun gave chase, running as fast as he could, trying to push himself past his limit. But however hard he tried, he fell further and further behind the trail of light. Eventually, he exhausted all of his power and was forced to stop.
"I...I can't do anything at all," he shook uncontrollably and realised an emotional outpouring of regret, anger and guilt. The ease with which Icarus had brushed him aside and spoke of the fight cut like a knife to his heart. Recalling the fight only made it worse. His best friend was taken, and robbed with such terrifying ease. But Khun couldn't forget this. Couldn't stop himself from thinking about Bam. The joyful time at St. Freya seemed to have just taken place yesterday. All before Bam had suddenly turned into the Void Aversary of the Honkai who wore a grim smile on his face.
Khun fought long and hard for this reunion, only to see Icarus swoop in and take him away. Everything had changed except for himself. He remained a calculated timid boy hiding in his corner. Finally, it seemed he understood it; the chances of getting Bam back were growing slimmer.
.
An entire month passed like that.
.
He put another paper in the folder, the pages heavy on his grip. They had spent months looking for Bam, and for Jinsung, a small part of all of them still remaining hopeful of the man's survival, to no avail. Still, data came from all over the world and the useful parts were printed out, filed and gradually filled the Helios' lab.
"Still thinking about him?" A stupid question coming from someone as smart as Garam.
"Yes."
The girl shrugged, "Look at the bright side, won't you? At least she's not in the hands of Schiksal or the World Serpent."
Truly, a few hours ago Anti-Entropy was informed that World Serpent had raided Schiksal's labs in North Africa and while not much was known about the battle, they did know one thing; the Herrscher of the Void had escaped. They had breathed a sigh of relief then but apprehension had quickly returned.
"It's just the two of us here. So if you want to talk,"
"Bam, he," —Garam made a strangled noise seeing how she had only said that to be polite—"he's changed. I can't describe how he's changed. Did he grow up? Become more mature? It just doesn't feel right. He had always been loud and restless. From the day we first met, I never knew he could ever be quiet or patient."
Garam took some calculated steps towards him, grabbing the files from his hands and laying them on the desk. Khun had barely noticed the movement, only realizing the papers were missing when his hands touched. The cold metal ring on his index—a family heirloom belonging to Maria and long left behind—only fueled his sadness.
"He was a troublemaker, but I found that reassuring. And then when I met him again in Arc City," his face and voice sank, "He was so quiet, too quiet. I couldn't even recognise him. It takes a lot of painful experiences to change someone like that— anything could happen in 4 months. Even now, he's probably out there alone, enduring pain that we could hardly even imagine. I just wish I could find him."
Garam placed an uncertain hand on his shoulder, sighing softly, "Don't be too hard on yourself, Khun. It's bad for your health. And we're doing everything we can," she shook her head, taking two of the files from the desks, "I need to make another run to the intel room. And then we'll clean up the desk."
Just before she left the room, Garam turned around and took one last worried glance at Khun. Alone, he sorted the files but his troubled mind was filled with images of his best friend. Four months had passed since the Battle of Schicksal. Bam must have witnessed many cities in ruins and the devastation caused by the Honkai. Did he blame himself for all those killed by the Great Eruption? Did she decide to take on this burden alone?
Khun shuddered. Though his wounds healed, the pain in his heart grew ever more intense. Bam's words echoed in his memories—his guilt, his resolve to not come back. Khun wanted to forget this, but it was all he had. He felt like a cold, dead stone sinking in an icy, dark lake.
For the first time after meeting Bam, Khun felt that the boy had become...
...A stranger.
A loud thud made him jump. Garam runs inside, throwing a Pocket at him. "Pack your gear! Let's go!"
"What happened?"
"We found him."
.
Helios arrives in Nagazora. Somehow, the familiar place feels more ominous than ever.
"The World Serpent attacked a Schicksal lab in North Africa yesterday, with Bam seizing the moment to escape. A few hours later, our Far East post detected a Herrscher energy pulse in Nagazora that matched samples from Arc City."
"He teleported to this place with his Herrscher powers."
Garam nodded, "An ultra-long-distance teleportation. He's been off the radar since then. Our posts and satellites picked up nothing else. But at least we're sure he was here. We might find more clues in the city."
"Is Schicksal doing anything?"
"Not yet. We're ahead of them this time. The Helios landed in east Nagazora. We'll set up a base point here and start with the surroundings," she took out her own Pocket and used it to scan their surroundings, "The city is now wholly deserted. I'll set up a simple Honkai detector matrix to locate Bam. We first need to find some open space. The wall over there. What is it?"
"That's the Nagazora Wall. It breaks the city in half—the west side and the east side."
Following the Pocket's mark, the two of them walked towards an opening. Below them, the Nagazora streets expanded wide, filled with water and wreckage. One would think not a day had passed since the disaster. Khun had imagined how the city would fair a hundred times and yet it was nothing compared to seeing it in real life.
"The 3rd Honkai Eruption surely left its mark," Garam mumbled setting up her machine, "Nagazora was a port city with a low elevation. The Eruption sank the place and led to seawater intrusion. Honkai-contaminated seawater only made it worse. The eastern districts located downstream were hit the hardest. To think that Nagazora used to be a prosperous city with 3 million people just 3 years ago."
"All this was caused by the 3rd Honkai Eruption," he cut in.
Garam seemed to realize how delicate the situation was, "It wasn't your fault."
"It doesn't really matter. There's no way to make up for the devastation that this city suffered," he looked over at the horizon, "I chose to become a Herrscher 3 years ago. The Nagazora tragedy might have been averted if I were stronger. I know I can't turn back time but I'm always reminded of this disaster whenever I face a choice. This is a burden that I must bear. And Bam must feel the same way."
"Wait! I think I found something!" A bright red spot popped up on the screen and kept blinking, "This is it! It's faint, but it's definitely a Herrscher! And it's very close! Wait a second, it's right beside me?"
Khun coughed.
"Oh. It's you," she groaned, "The Gem is gone, but you still have traces of Herrscher energy."
"Yes, Dr. Urek also included that in his assessment report. He said I wasn't the only one. Your Sovereign was another case, though we don't know the exact details. And it makes no difference either way. I can't control these trace powers."
"I'd advise against that. You'll only hurt yourself if you try to tap into an unstable source of energy," another example of his incompetence, "Back to the topic. After filtering out your energy signature, I don't see anything around here. Let's head to the next location."
.
"I remember this place," Garam took a look at what Khun pointed out and saw a heavily damaged building. "That big hole. I'm to blame for that. When I escaped from Nagazora together with Bam and Rak 3 years ago, this is where we met Mister Jinsung. We first thought he was an enemy and,"
"You probably gave him a ton of trouble." Garam chuckled glancing at the pile of rumble around them. Of course, no one would dare approach such a contained area to clean after them.
Khun also seemed to laugh at the memories, "The Hyperion required heavy repairs afterwards and the prototype weapon aboard the ship was damaged beyond repair. Mister Jinsung was almost punished by HQ, but our Principal took the blame for that."
"I suppose you were lucky your Overseer has a soft spot for Wagnang."
Khun nodded, "I lost control during our escape and when I woke up again, mister Jinsung was the first person I saw. He didn't care about what I was—said he'd forge me into a soldier in control of my powers. That's why I became a Valkyrie."
And thus, three years passed and both powers and his teacher were long gone.
"We're very close to the next scanning location."
"It's getting harder to reach downtown. Pretty much every overpass and street is underwater."
"Forget it, let's just focus on the main road." She paused and looked at her Pocket. Before Khun could question, the woman ran towards some debris, grabbing a circular object, "This is an Anti-Entropy assistant robot."
"So? Maybe it was left here three years ago."
"It looks like a recent model," she frowned again and stored it away. Even if the robot was new, it must have been in pretty bad shape. Garam settled her Pocket in the ground, letting her machine materialize a poorly made out map. Khun's red dot blipped loudly among other smaller ones—energy at best, beasts at worst.
"Wait," pressing another set of buttons, the colour of the map changed again, this time only showing Khun's dot and another mark near them. "It doesn't look like a zombie or a beast."
"Could it be Bam?"
"Doubtful. If it was him, his dot would be even brighter than yours. But it does look to be a human."
"Human? There are still people in Nagazora?"
"Only one way to find out."
.
It's a human, alright. It's a child. Her name is Miseng, one of the few survivors, a refugee, a local of Nagazora, a person too young to be here and all too remarkable to be able to survive. She had fled to the east city after the Eruption and had lived there ever since. There were over a dozen kids like her—all under the age of sixteen—and they'd lived in the ruined city for three years.
"Schicksal mobilised three branches for disaster relief and evac, but some people were left behind," Nothing to do with the Overseer himself. When faced with such disasters, casualties are a given.
"I asked her about the past but her memories are sketchy. She couldn't remember anything about the Honkai," Garam kept notes as she talked, "These kids now live in a place called the Roost. Ever heard of it?"
"The Roost? I don't remember a place like that in Nagazora."
"They also have this woman who manages things. Miseng calls her 'Sensei'. She is usually away from Nagazora and only visits every 1 or 2 months with supplies and food," she clicked her tongue, "And that's the weird part. If she can come and go as she pleases, why doesn't she get these kids out of here?"
Khun didn't have an answer. It didn't seem the resident scientist expected it from him.
"It's already a big mess, and this Sensei complicates things even further. I'll try to make sense of this but you should also try and talk to her."
Khun nodded and opened the door. He had never been good with kids, that had always been Rak's strong suit, but it seemed everyone had to change eventually. The girl in front of him was short and thin, not malnourished but not healthy either, with brown hair framing her face. Her left eye was covered with an aporrly made patch and covered with flower-like clips.
"Hi, I'm Khun Aguero Agnis. You can call me Khun.
"Um, greetings Mister Khun."
"Please, just call me Khun," he tried to smile, "Dr. Garam told me about you. You're Miseng, right?"
The girl nodded, "Thank you for saving me."
"Don't worry, Miseng. You're very healthy, your injuries will heal quickly and we'll take you home once you get better." The girl didn't seem relieved at the news, "Are you hungry? I'll make something for you."
Miseng blinked shyly. She wanted to say something but lacked the courage to do so. Khun noticed that the child's gaze shifted to the window and cleared his throat, "Did you lose something?"
"Yes. I lost a tiny robot," she raised her gaze determinedly, "it's round and pink! It's my friend, Zygaena. Sensei gave it to me but it wasn't next to me when I woke up."
A robot assistant? Could it be the Anti-Entropy bot they had encountered?
"Zygaena stores a lot of memories. I can't do anything without its help."
"Give me a minute," without a second to waste, Khun grabbed Garam's bag from the other side of the room. As expected, deep within her Pocket, he found the little robot from earlier. "Is that it?"
"Zygaena! You're back!" she cuddled the little robot like a cherished treasure, "My memory doesn't work too well. I can't remember much about the past. And so Zygaena is like my backup brain. It reminds me of things when I forget. I can just ask "Zygaena, Zygaena, who am I?" and it will say—"
The little robot didn't give an answer.
"Why is it ignoring me? Zygaena always responds to me! Is it dead?"
Well, this was going wonderful. "It's alright, Miseng. Robots don't die, it's probably just broken. We'll get it to Dr. Garam and she'll have it fixed in no time."
.
Maybe Khun had been a little generous when it came to the time Garam needed but he certainly had underestimated her skills. The robot had been in a dreadful condition—most of its components damaged beyond repair—but with a mechanic as capable as Garam and a bunch of Anti-Entropy technology, fixing it was a mere child's play.
No more than an hour had passed when Zygaena made its first beeping sound, making their small group sigh in relief.
"Zygaena is alive again!"
As the child and robot were reunited, Khun turned to Garam, "Doctor, I asked Miseng where the Roost was, and it seems to be very close to the last probing location. Since she's back on her feet, we can drop her off at the Roost and talk to the refugees. If they've been living in Nagazora all this time, one of them might have seen Bam."
"Agreed. Let's do this."
Miseng seemed excited at the prospect of returning home, her new friends in tow. She was the first to exit Helios, carefully bouncing from left to right. "Oh, I know this place. Should be," she sheepishly turned to her robot, "Where to go now?"
"Left."
"Ah! It's left!"
"I'm losing my faith," Garam whispered under her breath.
"Almost there! Gotta get through here," she said and ducked beneath some broken piece of metal. In front of them was a small tunnel. Taking a deep breath, Khun trailed after Miseng, occasionally turning to check for Garam. After a few minutes, they reached the other side.
"Welcome to the Roost!"
.
The Rooster was nothing more than a group of five prefab plywood shelters. Back in the day, they were built on high-rise buildings to stay above the flood. From what he could remember, Nagazora had nothing like these before—at least not before the Honkai. It most likely meant they were built after the disaster, possibly with help from the outside. This Sensei character must have been part of that.
Miseng had mentioned their teacher owned the Roost and was also the one who had saved and brought them here. She wasn't there often but she always returned with food and strange presents. Khun had thought of asking about these 'strange presents' but he couldn't interrupt Miseng's nostalgic and passionate rant. The little girl continued, explaining how their Sensei had created a safe zone for them to safely venture and scavenge for things to add to the emergency stockpile.
"Everything is divided equally, no matter how much we bring back." Miseng told them proudly, most likely repeating her Sensei's exact words, "There's only one rule: Do your best and live well. Everyone here's experienced terrible things. Sensei taught us to help each other!"
"Do you know when she'll be back? We want to ask her a few questions."
Without missing a beat, Miseng spoke again, "Yesterday."
Garam and Khun looked at each other and then back at the little girl.
"I tried looking for her but accidentally left the safe zone. The beasts chased me and I fell off a building!" —Garam grimaced— "Can I ask you about the questions you have for our Sensei?"
"Actually, Dr. Garam and I came here to look for a lost friend. He's—"
Garam shushed him, "He's about this tall. Brown hair, yellow eyes. Would most likely be brooding."
"I haven't seen anyone like that," she told them sadly, " Sensei should be able to help, but she's not here. Maybe you can ask the others first?"
.
Naturally, no one knew a thing.
.
Until,
"Boy with brown hair and golden eyes," a boy mumbled, "is he wearing an atrocious white bodysuit?"
It wasn't atrocious. Well, it was, but it was also Jinsung's gift so Khun wouldn't judge. "That must be him!"
"I saw him heading towards the west city."
"West city," he repeated, "that's the opposite side of town. That must be why most children didn't see him. Thank you."
"That boy's name is Bam, right?
Khun held his breath, "Do you know something else?"
The child looked at the ground, deep in thought, before raising his gaze to look at Khun. "He looked very sad when I saw him. But I couldn't tell for sure. We were far away."
Khun's fist clenched at his side.
.
Khun watched as a group of kids gathered at the side, watching Anti-Entropy's Hephaestus mech fixing the outermost guardrails. The children were talking in hushed tones but the excitement was visible in their eyes. Another kid came running, almost knocking Khun down.
"It's Arahato!" she yelled and ran up to the mech. The other children decided to follow, feeling much more courageous after their friend's initiative. "It's my favourite anime! It was super popular in Nagazora! I've memorised that cool line from Muji Countdown episode 3!", she turned to the other kids, a serious expression on her face, "This isn't philosophy. It's just a simple removal of annoying things."
"The battle where the Voidrine Tyrant demolished the hero team was so epic! I watched it dozens of times." Another kid exclaimed.
"WHY WOULD YOU KEEP WATCHING THAT BATTLE?" the mechanic voice of the bot said. Seconds after, an angry Garam leapt out of the cockpit. As soon as she was out, the children began touching Hephaestus. Garam let them be and turned to Khun, "So, I went to the last scanning location but found nothing. Bam must have left the east city."
"I asked the children in the shelters and someone saw him heading to the other side of town. We should start moving at once and search the west city."
"Khun, I understand you want to find him as soon as possible but it's getting dark. Let's call it a day and start our search tomorrow."
"But—"
"We know he's out there. That's why we should be cautious and avoid unnecessary accidents."
"I understand but I still have a few hours before the sun sets. I can still do some scouting."
Garam sighed, "Just get back before it gets dark."
"One more thing," —Garam sighed again— "Can we help the children here?"
She nodded. "I'll talk to Blondzilla and see what we can do. The Salt Lake base already took in some orphans, and we're low on medical supplies. We must talk to their Sensei about it but I'm afraid our assistance will be quite limited."
Miseng's head popped up from behind Khun, "You need to cross the Nagazora Wall to get to the west city. Let me lead the way since it's easy to get lost there."
"Even so, the two of you can check it out tomorrow."
Khun nodded and turned to Miseng, "Would you mind going to the Helios with me to get a health exam? We can have dinner together."
The little girl's eyes lighten up, "Really? It feels bad saying this, but there's only canned food at the Roost. I always wanted to try something else."
"Alright. Let's go," he smiled at her and let her walk forward towards the ship. As they left the Roost, Khun couldn't help noticing a building in the ruined concrete jungle. "That's... Chiba Academy?"
The girl's eyes shot up, "Ah, yes, the famous Chiba Academy. Only rich people study there. People say that if you're a student of Chiba, you're set for life!"
"That isn't exactly true. I used to be a student at Chiba as well."
"Wow! Does that mean you're super, super, super rich?"
Khun choked, deciding to ignore the question for both of their sake. "I was in school when the Honkai Eruption happened," his voice dropped, "I didn't expect to return to this place like this."
"What about your family?"
"My parents died in a car crash when I was young, I barely remember them." He reached for the ring on his finger, "My older sister raised me alone. Shortly after I enrolled in Chiba, she was accused of abusing the company's funds and was sentenced to prison. One night she fled and I never saw her again."
"You must miss her."
It's a simple—expected even—conclusion. It's not that Aguero doesn't miss her; the only rock in his life, his only family. It's rather Khun doesn't. Maria's brother was killed when the Herrscher first emerged, drowned in his own sorrow, cursing Maria for the bonds she cost him, cursing her for leaving him alone. The boy that made peace with the harbinger of doom, the boy Bam Grace spared from his own self-destructiveness, was Khun and he had no time to think about an estranged sister leaving him to rot when the fate of things much more important lay on his shoulders.
"When it happened, I was—" devastated, shattered, inconsolable, "it was painful. My only family was taken away. The name of the Khun clan was tarnished. People I called friends ostracised me and others desperately tried to get a hold of the remaining wealth. It was a bit of a wake-up call, really. No one cared about me, they only cared for the Khun name. Eventually, I just distanced myself from everything and everyone and, I guess, that brought some respite to my heart. Then, the Honkai arrived and," he paused, there was no reason to give the detailed description of the disaster to such a young child, "Someone changed me that day. Forever. On that fateful day, I met him."
Miseng's eyes appeared even bigger, the last part capturing her full attention, "Him?"
"Bam Grace, the friend we're looking for." he explained, "He saved me from the disaster. He was the one who grabbed my hand and lifted me out of the darkness. His frail arm was imbued with unimaginable strength," he chuckled, " I tried to twist and pull away from him, but he held on. He was as naive as he was stubborn but he was also reassuring and sincere. He fought hard to save me from death and refused to just let me die like that, and it was the strangest feeling. I never knew him before and he knew nothing of me, my past, my life, and yet there was truth in his words. For the first time since Maria, I felt like trusting someone again."
By that point, Miseng had almost dropped all of her things on the floor, taking a seat near Khun's legs much like a child being told a bedtime story. We finally left Nagazora together. Schicksal Valkyries took us away and we enrolled in St. Freya High. Things happened. I met new people. The family, friends, home, and future I'd lost trickled back to me and I found a place where I belonged. Now that I've been thinking about it, perhaps it was at that very moment that my life changed," thinking about the past brought a smile to his face. He had hardly smiled for many months. It was a smile of pure happiness that could only be seen on an innocent soul with a happy life. And it all belonged to the past. "I'm sorry, I got carried away."
"No, of course not! he must be very important to you."
"We shared many memories in this place. Just walking around here reminds me of our past and that only makes me want to find him sooner. He was once my protector and, well, it only makes sense I'm the one who must protect him this time."
.
1 day, 03:41:56 after the 3rd Erruption
Bam wheezed. They had been running for so long, that Aguero couldn't even master the strength to complain. The younger boy took out his gun and loaded some more bullets in it. "These zombies can run! It's nothing like the slowpoke I see in movies!" Aguero doesn't answer and just watches him reach inside his backpack and get out a pack of half-eaten cracks. Their eyes meet and Bam frowns, "Hey, what's going on with you? Why are you so silent?"
Aguero feels the sudden urge to reach into his own backpack and retrieve his sister's ring. He had vowed to keep it hidden—have it remain at his side but not truly somewhere where it could be carelessly lost—the only thing of his family that he had left, but no more than ever, he saw no point in saving it for the future.
"What will happen to us?" He says instead, "The entire city is destroyed. There are monsters and zombies everywhere. There's no help in sight. Sure, we're trying to escape the city but where can we even escape to?"
Bam sighs, sitting down. Aguero, albeit uncertain, follows suit. Sitting like this, backed up against a graffiti wall, the sun setting on Nagazora, it almost feels normal. Like they're two kids and not the sole survivors of Chiba Academy.
"You worry too much," Bam tells him and offers him a small smile, "There is this wise saying, it's, um, things will work out and then," he thinks about it for a while, "it will grow muscles."
"Things will work themselves out," he corrects and a small laugh escapes him, "how did you get to Chiba, I wonder."
"The saying isn't important. The feeling is! And, listen, we can keep going east, go through the barrier and meet actual people. If not, we'll just head north. Or! Borrow a boat and head to another country. We have plenty of options, I promise!"
Supposedly that is. Bam doesn't have it all wrong, not really, but the common problem with all of his solution lies in where it all begins; Aguero. No one would let Aguero leave Nagazora, and to some extent, he didn't want to either. He was nothing more than a ticking bomb. Bam had tried to save him—had thought he did—but in reality, the only reason they were alive was because the Herrscher was letting them. One of these days, they could grow bored and simply decide whatever made Bam Grace an interesting individual was no longer cutting it.
"I think you better leave without me," he blurts out, "You might actually survive on your own whereas I'm a disaster waiting to happen."
"Stop that nonsense! You're already back to normal!"
"You don't understand," he can't, "I know the voice is still there. I know that in any moment the darkness will assail me from all sides and tear me apart just like before. Even if we escape now, it will follow me wherever I go. If I lose control again—"
"Then I'll just beat you one more time. Easy!"
"What?"
Bam did not falter, "Look, I'll carry you from danger and beat up all the bad guys. If you turn into that Herrscher thing again, I'll just club your senses back into your head! I can do this all day, and I'll keep doing it to protect you. But your head might hurt a bit. An average amount. Probably a lot." He spoke with such ease—like this was merely a baseball match rather than a fight against a demigod. "So quit worrying. You said you were alone. I used to be alone myself. Two ex-loners make the perfect team."
"But the others, anyone we'll come across, they won't think like that."
"They won't think anything if they don't know anything! And then, we'll simply bluff our way out of things. Tried it many times when I was travelling and it always worked."
Aguero blinked. A laugh escaped him. It had been so long. "You're the biggest idiot I've ever seen," he mumbled, "but you make me feel safe."
.
The flooding gets worse. Khun watches anxiously the newly submerged parts of the city and bites his nails. The children of the Roost look equally stressed. Trying to maintain his composure, he returns to Helios to find Garam. Instead of the Anti-Entropy scientist, he finds Miseng and another person. His gaze darkens as he takes in fully the second figure. She has a bunch of arrows attached to her hip—pitch black and familiar—and Khun feels a phantom pain approaching him fast.
"Ah. I've been waiting for you, Khun Aguero Agnis," she tells him and stands up. Her red cape falls off her shoulder, a perfect mix of her hair and possibly her blood. Khun thinks he needs to test it.
"Sensei is back!" Miseng says and practically traps the woman in a hug, "Did you beat that huge monster?"
"Sorry, it got away, but not before I broke one of its wings. It won't be able to fly for a while," she patted the child's head, "We'll talk about this later, Miseng. Get everyone inside and leave us. I need to talk to our guest alone."
Miseng looks like she can feel the tension in the air. Still, she nods nervously and disappears into one of the shelters. Khun is left staring at her; the archer of World Serpent. The woman who had been partly responsible for his and Bam's separation back in ARC City. The woman who had injured him, the woman who had sent Bam right back into Schiksal's clutches.
"You must have many questions, but I hope you can first accept my gratitude. The children told me everything. You saved Miseng and the Roost. If not for you, they might have been," she clears her throat, "anyway, thank you.
"You're their Sensei?"
"I am."
"The children's stories of you hardly describe the assassin I met in Arc City."
"We all have our little secrets, don't we?"
Khun laughs bitterly, not taking his eyes off her, "I hope their trust in you is not misplaced."
The redhead ignored him, "You came here for the Herrscher boy, right?"
"Yes, and Miseng said you can help us find him."
"That's true, but I'm afraid I have bad news for you." Somehow, Khun expects it before the words are uttered, "Because I came here to end his existence for good."
Khun breathes. In and out. He can't act rashly. "What's World Serpent's plan this time?"
"The Serpent has nothing to do with this. I've decided to act alone on this." she said, eyeing him curiously, "You seem to be wholly oblivious to his condition."
"What do you mean?"
"I'll let you in on something new. Take it as a form of gratitude for helping the children. The World Serpent once captured the Herrscher at Arc City. A madman then experimented on him. Cruelly." —Khun tightened his fists— "But we later found out that he had faked all his painful cries. He never felt anything. The Herrscher Cores have infected his systems. He can no longer feel pain."
"That's," he stops and thinks back to their reunion. He hadn't realized. He hadn't noticed. "I didn't know anything about this."
"A single Core can wipe out a city. And this boy has three. Infection is only inevitable. While he used some kind of 'cage' to contain the Herrscher and retain his persona, such a thing is useless against Honkai infection. In fact, that 'cage' is probably long gone. Rising sea levels, the Honkai horde, and the arrival of a Judgment-class beast all point to one obvious fact," she tapped her temple, "He's losing control and the Herrscher is waking. He is the imminent flood about to burst the dam. We intended to observe, but it's clear he's lost. Perhaps he knows since he chose to hide in this deserted place. Thus, I must neutralise this threat before matters get worse."
It couldn't be true. Khun refused to accept defeat like that. He shook his head, "An Anti-Entropy fleet will arrive and take him to a safe place and keep the children from danger."
The woman openly laughs at him, "I don't think Anti-Entropy can save her at all. I still remember that disaster 4 months ago. The solution to this problem is obvious. We must sever it at the root."
Khun's fist flew towards her face. The woman, still as stoic as ever, evaded with ease letting his hand slam against the glass. Droplets of blood fell from his knuckles but Khun couldn't find himself to care. "Solution. Sever. You only want to kill her!"
"I'm grateful for what you did for the children, and you aren't my target. I do not wish to fight you," she took one of the arrows and tossed it to his feet, "But if you keep getting in my way, well, I'll have no choice."
"I won't let you touch him!" he yelled and dived into the fight once more. Shadows flashed, turning into a dark mist that engulfed Khun and inflicted grievous wounds on him. Even when the mist dispersed, Khun stood his ground. Physical wounds could not stop someone hardened by his inner pain.
The assassin frowned. She withheld her attack and assessed her prey from an elevated vantage. Her eyes turned a bright red. Her strange cape billowed and fluttered loudly in the air.
"Stop!" A voice shouted. The woman's expression faltered, her smile dropping as her cape rested gently on her shoulders. She turned around and saw Miseng standing next to an open door.
"Miseng. I told you to stay inside."
"Sensei, why are you fighting Khun?" she asked, her voice small, "Khun, he, he didn't hurt us. He's a nice guy who saved me. He's only here to look for his friend! You can help him do that, right?"
"I can't let him take his friend away."
"Why?"
"Because his friend is dangerous. He may hurt you. He may hurt everyone."
Khun couldn't make Miseng's exact expression, but he saw the small tremors of her hands, "Then, will Khun be able to see him again?" —there was no answer— "No? Never?"
Khun escaped the woman's hold, catching his breath and a full view of Miseng. The girl's glassy eyes stared right at the woman. "But that," she briefly glanced at him, "Khun misses Bam very much. He couldn't stop talking about him. Bam saved him three years ago just like you saved us! Khun loves him just like we love you, Sensei. Please, please give Khun a chance."
The woman raised her arrow again, bow still in hand and aimed at Khun. His ribs were hurting, his legs were barely holding on, and he wasn't sure he could dodge such a close attack.
"Miss Hwaryun!" Miseng cried out. Tears flowed from her eyes and she buried her face in her arms, shaking like a tiny frightened creature. "You're scaring me, you're turning into a different person."
The woman—Hwaryun—stopped, her gaze softening. She let her weapon fall to the floor with a loud crack. She approached Miseng, kneeling down in front of her. "There's no need to fear, child." she gently wiped the tears from Miseng's eyes, "I'll give him a chance. I'll promise you that."
It took some more gentle convictions from Hwaryun but eventually, she managed to convince Miseng to head back to her home. She closed the door and turned around with a sigh. "Leave the children out of our fight," she told him, "Follow me if you want to know where he is. I won't attack you but don't you dare try to stop me. I still see him as a threat, but I guess you're welcome to feel otherwise."
.
Khun obediently follows Hwaryun, trailing after her like a lost dog. She had just given him a map of Bam's possible locations, half of which they'd check out in the morning. "Before I forget," she told him, "I still owe you one."
She entered a dilapidated shed leaving him alone. His fingers tingled. Could she be going back on her word? Was she only trying to distract him before attacking? Before he could overthink it some more, she emerged again with a captured beast. No. While there was something on her shoulder tied up with an excessive amount of rope, it was no beast.
"Dr. Garam!"
"I ran into her before I found you and Miseng," she said and let the scientist down, ungagging her in the process, "There was some misunderstanding. She started it."
"Why would you gag her!"
" I only wanted to restrain her, but her language was... unhealthy for the children. Gagging her was the only option," —Garam glared at her but didn't argue— "Take care of her and meet me at the wall. Remember, I promised Miseng I'd take you. Alone. And be prepared. The dragon beast won't make it easy for us. I sensed something strange while fighting it. It felt like, I think it was human sorrow, pain, and guilt. Instinct drives Honkai beasts to gather around Herrschers. But this one wants to protect him." she smiled, " I didn't expect Honkai beasts to have such feelings. It reminds me a lot of you. Do your best, Mister Khun, but I doubt you can change anything."
As Khun helped Garam get entirely free, he told her about his meeting with Hwaryun. The older woman didn't seem thrilled at the prospect of them working together. Probably because of the whole 'abduction' business. "Are you sure you want to find Bam with her help?"
"She intends to kill him. I must be there to stop her."
"This is getting out of hand. We need to call for support. That, that woman is dangerous."
"I know, but her hatred for Bam seems personal and not part of the World Serpent's plans. She'll kill Bam for certain, and she'll show no mercy to anyone in her way," he sighed, "But despite all that, I need her help. There were so many times when he was right there before me. The Battle of Schicksal, the fight against Yura, when Icarus took him, all these times I could only watch on hopelessly as he was wrested away. Too weak to even do anything."
"It wasn't your fault."
"I know," he said, "But I can't go on like this. Not anymore. I can't keep lying to myself. Bam's presence helped me forget about the painful past, the loneliness, and the confusion but when he was gone, I suddenly realised that nothing had changed at all. , I haven't changed at all. I feel like I'm still a minnow trying to swim with sharks and I failed to notice it until it was too late. My inability to change led to our separation and that then led to what we're facing today. He has always protected me but I failed to do anything for him. I hate this. I hate how useless I am. I must accept the fact that I lack the power to protect him."
Garam opened her mouth to retort but Khun continued, "Accepting this doesn't mean that I'm giving up. No, it will make me see things more clearly. I have to make sacrifices to bring him back. I'll face anything. I don't care if I'm walking directly into a trap or set up against a deadly enemy. Because I know this is the only way I can protect Bam."
Garam sighed. She rubbed her wrists, still red from the rope, and gave him a defeated smile, "Just be safe."
.
Hwaryun watched the beast sink into the water. Khun stood beside her, looking almost guilty. She huffed. "We're close to the Herrscher. He's dangerous and may lose control at any time. Things will only get worse even if you send him away," she turned to him, "Is that your final choice?"
Khun nodded, "I'm taking him away."
"I'm afraid you'll only walk away with his corpse," she brought her bow forward, "because I will kill him."
"And I won't let that happen." he drew his blade. Hwaryun smiled. She had been expecting this. "Very well. We both know this is the only way to settle our disagreements," she dodged Khun's attack and shot one arrow at his arm grazing him, "You said you won't let that happen but the World Serpent knows everything about you. Without the Gem, you're nothing. You've always failed to protect him. This fight won't be any different."
Khun dodged her other attack, pushing his blade towards her with more force. "Why are you doing this? Why should he deserve such injustice?" he kept dodging but there was no time to plan an attack, "Is it because of what he is? What he's done in the past? It's only because he's a Herrscher, isn't it? But he would never hurt anyone!" the energy inside him bubbled, "How can this world treat this kind and gentle boy with such cruelty!"
Hwaryun took a step back, her mischievous smile dropping. For the first time since they'd met, she looked scared. "Honkai energy levels are rising," she whispered, "This!" her tone was manic, "this will kill you as well!"
Khun shook his head. The energy roared inside him like a beast in a cage. "I'll gladly trade my life for his! He saved my life, and I shall save him in return!" a blast of energy knocked Hwaryun down, leaving icy trails where she had once stood.
"I know I've been hiding behind him and running away. But now there's nowhere to run," he could see the tiny cloud of her breath. The proof he could make it. "I must protect him. As long as I breathe," it was even more visible now, "you will not harm him."
Ice shot from inside of him, freezing Hwaryun in her place to the point the down half of her cape had been covered by ice. Slowly the power's aggression subsided and Khun struggled to keep his balance. He brought a hand to his nose, warm blood was tickling down but he didn't care. He stood taller.
Hwaryun removed her cape and tried to move. After some wiggling, she managed to move half a step to the right before falling to the ground. Down on her knees, eyes to the sky, she laughed. "That strong look in your eyes, I like it." she lowered her gaze to meet his eyes, "Take him."
"What?"
"Leave. Get as far away from here as you can. Keep your promise and don't let him hurt anyone. You have yourself to thank, Khun. You proved yourself at the very last moment," she hit her frozen leg with the sharp tip of the arrow. "Now go, quickly, before I change my mind."
Khun nodded and ran. He followed the trail Hwaryun had told him earlier, the place the Herrscher of the Void's dragon was guarding. Truly, right there, in the middle of the rumble, he saw Bam's unconscious form. He carefully approached him, taking in the countless infection marks covering his dearest friend's body.
"At last," he said and let his head fall on Bam's chest, "I've found you at last."
.
Khun nervously stood before the door. He had spent four months—four difficult months—trying to track Bam and now, he had finally done it. He had finally saved him from both Schicksal and the World Serpent. He had never stopped dreaming of this reunion for many months. Yet, he felt no joy when it did happen. It was only fear and apprehension that filled his heart.
"Bam," he whispered to himself. He was exhausted but he dared not sleep, for his dreams were always filled with images of Bam's suffering. His friend was still healthy just two days ago and now he was unconscious and covered in Honkai infection patterns. No matter what Hwaryun had said, Khun refused to believe that Bam's reassuring smiles were mere disguises for unbearable pain.
The door opened.
"Dr. Garam, how is he?"
The Anti-Entropy scientist remained silent. She rubbed her eyes and sighed, "Emergency treatment worked. He's no longer critical and should wake soon enough," still there was no joy in her voice, "But he isn't getting any better. The bloody Herrscher kept trying to activate the Core and spread the infection! Bam did his best and fought off Viole for months, but his body will eventually fall apart. Absorbing a massive amount of Honkai energy to save a city from destruction certainly didn't help."
Garam's voice grew faint and soon became barely intelligible mumbling. The feeling of dread inside Khun only grew strong. "I've sent a Level 1 distress call to HQ. The Hyperion is heading over here at full speed," she lowered her gaze and refused to meet his eyes, "Khun, I want you to listen to me carefully."
He didn't want to. He couldn't.
Garam tried to look at him. Lowered her gaze again. Repeat. The entire ordeal lasted three seconds but it felt like an eternity. Eventually, the words came out, "Two months." —Khun shook his head, hoping that it would somehow change the story—"He has less than two months left. That's the amount of time we have.
He couldn't believe it. It had all been too sudden. The last time they had seen each other, he had appeared healthy and unhurt.
"Our Sovereign is also looking into this. Believe me, nobody knows Herrschers better than Enryu. I wanted to move him to somewhere safe, but we found Schicksal activity in the Far East. We must avoid risks. So, the safest thing to do is wait for help to arrive."
"Dr Garam, can I," his voice had gotten so small, it was like he was a child again, asking his sister for impossible things, "can I ask you to do something for me? Please don't tell Bam about his condition. At least, not before we have his final diagnosis. If he learns about this, I'm afraid he might leave again."
"I understand. I'll do that for you. We should focus on reassuring him and making him feel better."
"Thank you," he breathed, "He should be almost awake. I'll head to the medical bay."
"Wait!" Garam grabbed him and handed him a clean towel, "Clean your face first. Try to look good. It's your first real reunion after four months."
Khun nodded, rubbing the cloth against his face. He doubted it could hide the sleepless nights but he was sure Bam would understand. He left the towel on the chair and made his way to the medical bay. Once he reached it, he hesitated. Something had frozen him in his place. Was it hesitation? Panic? No. Khun knew the feeling all too well—it was fear. He was still feared facing him. Taking a deep breath, he left those inexplicable emotions behind and finally took a step forward.
The door opened.
"Khun!"
When he heard his voice, all worry disappeared from his heart. Bam called his name like he had always done. Like nothing had changed. Without daring to second guess it, Khun leaned in and hugged him. Bam hugged back as tight as he used to.
"It's been such a long time, Mei," Bam whispered in his hair, "wait, no. We actually just met a little while ago."
"I just woke up. This strange place scared me a little, but I knew exactly what had happened when I saw you," he smiled, making himself more comfortable in the bed, "I never thought that you would find me again."
Khun silently agreed. He had thought the same. Still smiling, he reached for something from one of the chairs. He had purposely left it there, patiently awaiting the reunion just like he was. He got a hold of it and tossed it to Bam.
"Hey! Why are you doing this? Khun! Stop throwing things at me!" Bam unfolded Khun's weapon of choice and saw the familiar orange fabric, "Wait, it's my jacket!"
"You careless idiot! Do you know what you've done?" Khun shouted at him, "Do you know how everyone is so worried about you? Do you know how much we missed you? Why did you hide in Arc City without telling anyone? You could have called us."
Though he didn't say it, he hoped it was getting the message across. Even if Bam was worried about Schicksal, Khun would simply take him and Rak and run away. Just like Bam had promised him all those years ago back in Nagazora, back when they had first been given a place in St. Freya. Had Bam any doubts about the others, Khun would give up on everything and run with him to any place he wanted. As long as Bam always told him where he'd run off to, Khun would never stop chasing.
Golden eyes blink back at him. They seem almost teary. Bam blinks again, this time rapidly, and flashes a boyish smile. "Erm, wow, new hairstyle," he says and points at the small braid on the crown of Khun's head, "You look good with anything, Khun."
He really wants to hit him again.
"Look, I'm sorry," he tells him sheepishly, "but I'm back."
Khun stares. Yes, he thinks, he's back. But how can he be happy when there's a clock for them?
"Yes, you're back, Bam." he smiles," Welcome home."
They hug again. He feels like he can breathe.
"How are you, Bam? Do you feel unwell?"
"Of course not! I just had a great nap and feel super energetic right now."
He smiles, "I'm so happy that you're safe. Dr. Garam treated your minor injuries. She said that you're tired and need some rest. And our Far East Branch has seceded and allied with Anti-Entropy instead. Dr. Garam is one of their leaders. I'll tell you everything that happened in the last 4 months."
Bam laughed, "That's a lot to take in. I guess everyone must have changed so much," another small chuckle escaped him, "How is Rak? Has he grown taller?"
"The gator is fine," he says with fake annoyance, "The Hyperion is on its way. You'll meet everyone soon enough."
.
They take a walk around Nagazora—it's Bam who insists—and even among rumble, it feels like home.
.
Garam puts on her glasses. Then takes them off. Then on again. "Look," she says eyeing both of them, "I'm fine with stray puppies or kittens. But stray Honkai beasts?" Outside the Helios' windows, one can see the dragon's shadow. Black March—as Bam pointed out its name is— guards the ship, flying in circles. "We took in cyborgs, refugees, and now we're getting a huge dragon. What's next? A World Serpent officer?"
Khun flashed her an apologetic smile and ushered Bam back to his room. He then returned to find Garam in the exact place he had left her. "I'm sorry for troubling you."
She sighs, "Whatever. I'm not angry, just a little surprised. Bam taming the beast is good news. One less problem for us. Let it follow the Helios for now. Anyway, I have something important to tell you. HQ reached a conclusion while you were away."
Khun's eyes light up, "You found a cure?"
Garam sighs, "Follow me. He wishes to speak with you in person." The two enter the meeting room. Garam closes the door softly, making sure no noise would alert Bam, and calls Hyperion. Urek's face quickly appears on the screen.
"Dr. Urek," Khun greets, "is there something you want to tell me?"
The first sign that something is wrong comes with Urek's stern expression. Those past few months they had spent with Anti-Entropy, the man had never looked as serious as he did at the moment. He acknowledged Khun with only a nod of his head instead of his usual blabbering and 'baby' mention.
"I believe Dr. Garam has told you about Bam's condition."
"She did," his voice shook, "He doesn't have much time left." From the corner of his ey,e he could see Garam fiddling with the sleeves of her sweater. "Please, Dr. Urek, tell me how to save him."
Urek looked at his partner, completely avoiding Khun's question. When he also turned to get a full view of Garam, her stare was devoid of any emotion. Urek closed his eyes and sighed, "You have the right to be informed. And this is why I'll be giving you my unreserved opinion on his case," he opened his eyes again and stared at him. He could see the scientist was as tired as they had been. "After much deliberation, we recommend the immediate transfer of Bam to a secure base at Baffin Bay. Anti-Entropy will protect him and contain any potential hazards that may result. We must," a small pause, "minimise the risks."
"Risk? I," his voice came out louder than he wanted. More desperate, "I don't understand."
"Please remain calm and listen to me carefully. Bam's condition is severe. The Herrscher Cores are infecting his body," he already knew as much, "We suspect lingering traces of Viole's persona. He must be eliminated to halt disease progression. However," —Khun's own eyes shot up, desperately searching for hope—"no one except for Bam can interfere with that process."
"What does that mean?"
"It means we can't do anything in regards to what's happening to him," his gaze fell on Garam, "Dr. Garam and I had a few ideas: surgical removal of the Cores or the Honkai-neutralising serum. But we had to abandon these proposals. They will not solve the root cause of his disease. To put it plainly, we're incapable of curing or delaying his condition."
The best of the best, the brightest minds of their age, Anti-Entropy's elite had ripped the last shred of hope within him. If they felt Bam's condition was hopeless then he was as good as dead/
"Are we just, going to sit by and watch him? No, no. I can't! Please think of something, Dr. Urek! I'll do anything to give him more time. Please!" Neither Urek nor Garam reacted to his pleas, "There must be another way."
"I'm sorry, kid." he told him, "But Bam is also fighting the infection. We must have faith in him as we continue our search for treatment. But if the disease progression continues, we must also be prepared for the worst."
"Be prepared for the worst? What do you mean?" What a stupid question. What a stupid boy. "I'm sorry. I—I shouldn't have asked. I understand."
The silence was suddenly broken by an incoming call.
"Khun, someone's looking for you. It's that refugee girl." Garam approached him, putting a hand on his shoulder, "Do you mind talking to her to see what she needs?"
He did mind. He minded everyone and everything. He felt as if the air around him choked him. He wanted to wreck this place, wreck the entire world and the very fabric of the universe just to see the Will of Honkai. Just to come face to face with the power that cruelly plays with Bam's fate.
Instead, he whispered a small agreement and left to find Miseng.
.
The cabin door opened. Khun stepped out of the Helios and spotted Miseng crouching in the corner.
"Good afternoon, Khun."
"Miseng? Why are you here?"
She giggled, "I have surprising news for you. Sensei will take us away from Nagazora." she clapped her hands loudly, "She's prepared a new home and we'll be staying there. Everyone's happy and packing their things. But I snuck out to meet you one last time. How are things with Bam? Sensei told me you brought him back! Where is he?"
"Oh, well, Bam's resting right now. He's a little tired." Khun was also tired. After hearing that terrible news, he couldn't force himself to respond warmly to the little girl. Miseng, however, was sensitive enough to notice.
"Oh. Okay. I'm really sorry I disturbed you!" she apologized, "I brought you something."
She reached for something white behind her back and handed it to Khun. It was a small doll-like charm made of tissue paper. He traced his fingers against the top holding it together and a faint smile found its way on his lips. "A teru teru bozu?"
"Yes, I made it myself! I prayed to it every day that I could leave Nagazora and see the outside world and my wish came true. So! I hope it can make your wish come true as well." she smiled, "You and Dr Garam are the only people who are kind to us besides our Sensei. I will never forget you."
Khun looked at the doll again. It was carefully sewn together from rags and had a smiley face drawn on it. He suddenly felt bad about his earlier behaviour towards Miseng.
"I, I guess I'll be going home. Take care, Khun."
"Wait," he said, "the city is still a dangerous place. Let's walk together one last time."
Miseng beamed.
.
Truly, when they arrived at the Roost, the kids were in a frenzy running up and down with their little bags. It seemed Miseng's excitement was an understatement compared to the others.
"We've arrived," he told her, "Go on. Don't keep your friends waiting."
The little girl nodded and ran off, but she suddenly turned around to look at him.
"What is it?"
"Um, I don't know, I think something is troubling you, Khun," she gave a small squeeze at Zygaena, "I know you've found Bam, but why do you look so sad? Did you two have a fight?"
Not yet. "No, we just, ran into some problems. Don't worry, I can handle it."
"Okay. That's good," she smiled again, "Oh, I just thought of something! If Bam's upset, just make some curry for him! Everyone feels happy after eating your curry. Just give Bam some of your curry and he'll be happy too."
"Thank you. I'll try to do that." Miseng's proud smile was contagious. Yes, Bam always enjoyed his cooking. Though it would solve nothing, keeping his dearest friend happy could possibly put his mind at ease.
"Miseng," a door opened and Hwaryun walked out, "go and join the others. We'll be leaving soon."
The little girl nodded and waved goodbye to Khun. He waved back.
"She really likes you," Hwaryun said catching his attention, "She kept chirping about saying goodbye to you and snuck out when I wasn't looking."
"Where are you sending the children?"
She laughed, "You should stop viewing us with suspicion. I'm sending them somewhere safe." somewhere away from this decaying city, somewhere away from the danger Bam was, "I always wanted to do that, and I've finally earned the chance... thanks to you, I must add. They used to be afraid of everything - the outside world, other people, and strange places. But you changed their minds. You taught the children that kind strangers actually do exist. You managed to fill the hole that the Herrscher left in their hearts."
What Herrscher, he wondered. Bam who had fought tooth and nail to stop the Herrscher of the Void? Bam who had saved an entire city by giving away his life? Or was it Khun, the Herrscher of Ice, who had brought destruction to Nagazora in the first place?
"I pray that they'll never have to learn the truth," Hwaryun smiles at him. It's not hostile like it used to but it still keeps him on edge, "Let's talk about your depressed look instead. I suppose you finally learned the truth about Bam's condition. Told you I wasn't lying. Anti-Entropy will try to find ways to treat him, but none of them will work. Do tell me, what did they come up with? Ideals? Hope? Or friendship?"
"Shut up."
"Apologies. I'm not here to gloat, nor am I trying to pick a fight."
"Could have fooled me."
"I just feel compelled to tell you something that you might want to hear," she leaned forward and whispered into his ear, "The World Serpent is interested in working with you. You want to save the boy. Schicksal can't do it. Anti-Entropy can't do it either...but the World Serpent can."
Khun jolted back. "What?"
"If you're interested, come back here in 2 hours. Alone. I have a few private matters to attend to. Take care."
"Wait! Tell me! Don't just stop there!" The metal doors slammed shut, locking Khun outside.
.
When he returned back to Helios, it was eerily quiet. He quietly navigated the rooms trying to find a trace of Bam and Garam. Perhaps it was best if they didn't see each other at that moment—if Bam didn't see Khun like that. But, still, worry gnawed at him.
"—isn't he here with you?" Bam's voice made him freeze outside the medical bay.
"He's tending to other matters and won't be back for a while," Garam replied.
"Then," he could hear Bam holding his breath, carefully picking his next words, "I won't hold anything back. My condition... looks bad, right?"
Though no reply came, Khun could imagine Garam's face clear as day. Her silence was the worst affirmation.
"You don't have to lie to me. It's my body. I think I pretty much know what's going on," Bam laughed but it sounded empty. Hollow, "It was numbness at first. Then I stopped feeling pain altogether. Strange wounds kept appearing all over me."
"Bam," it was Urek's voice that continued, "the Hyperion is rushing over to Nagazora. We will move you to a secure base. Anti-Entropy will do whatever it can to protect you and give you more time."
"I know. I trust you." more silence, "But there's something I must do before I leave."
"What is it?"
"Nagazora... it's in grave danger. I felt something when I first arrived. There's too much Honkai energy in the water and the Honkai beasts are too active. Two days have passed, but the water keeps rising and there are even more beasts. Something big is bound to happen."
"Dr. Garam recorded similar observations in her report."
"Yes. Field scans revealed that various Honkai-related phenomena have intensified in the last 2 days. The 3rd Honkai Eruption created a large Honkai reservoir here. But the current situation is getting worse. I first thought it was influenced by the Herrscher of the Void but that's obviously not the case."
"It isn't me. Something else is changing things in Nagazora. Honkai energy levels are so high that this place might blow at any minute. We must do something about this."
"You're right. An Anti-Entropy task force is ready to take action. " Urek reassured him, "This may be Schicksal territory, but we will not sit idly by."
"I can absorb the Honkai energy from the city and use my Void powers."
Khun felt the rage again. The same feeling that followed him closely ever since the battle of Schicksal.
"Hey! Do you have any idea what you're talking about?" Garam yelled at him, "Out of the question, Bam. You should avoid using your Herrscher powers."
"Anti-Entropy will handle the Nagazora problem. Please have faith in us."
"I'm sorry, you misunderstood me. I do hope everything will work out. I know everyone wants to solve this crisis," his voice had turned into a whisper but it still sounded decisive. "I'm just saying that if things go out of control, I hope you'll let me do what I can."
There was no more arguing. It scared Khun more than words could describe. Surely, they wouldn't let him. Surely, they'd manage to save Nagazora on their own.
"I will reassess the situation and decide after the Hyperion arrives," Urek tells them eventually, "Is there anything else you would like to know?"
"I have one last request."
"Let's hear it."
"I'll comply with your containment and treatment methods. I know I'm a bomb and so I should be kept away. This is why I hope that you'll keep my friends in the Far East Branch away from me as well. I don't want them to get too close to me. Not until my Herrscher problem is solved."
"You know they'll do anything to stay by your side."
"I know... that's why I'm asking you for help. I can't put them in danger again." the talking stopped for some seconds and Khun pressed his temple against the coolness of the door, "I was shocked when I met Khun in Arc City...he'd changed so much. He looked so exhausted. He pretends that everything is fine, but I know. I know. He found a home and friends at St. Freya and recovered the things that he desired but had lost. He almost escaped from his past and I... I destroyed it all. The nightmares just kept coming back on those cold, dark nights. I saw his chest ripped apart slowly as I seized the Gem and left his lifeless body in a pool of blood. I—"
"It's not your fault. The Herrscher of the Void did all that," Garam argued, "They have never blamed you for anything."
"I know. That's why it felt even worse. They chose to trust me, treat me as a friend, and are still waiting for me despite what had happened," he breathed deeply, "If I turn into that monster again, they won't leave me alone. They'll do anything to save me. And if that does happen... I might end up killing those who care for me. I can't. I won't let that happen again."
A slow, creeping numbness settled over him, but it failed to smother the sharp, twisting ache in his chest. His breath came uneven, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached. He wanted to storm in, to demand an explanation, to shake Bam and make him see how cruel it was to leave him—leave everyone—just like that. Just as they had gotten him back. But he didn't. Instead, he leaned back against the wall, pressing his palm over his mouth to stifle the shudder that threatened to escape.
.
"Khun, you're back!"
Khun smiled brightly at him. "You must be hungry. I made something for you."
Bam grabbed the plate, the corners of his lips almost reaching his eyes as the smell of the curry filled the room.
"Eat this first. Let me know if you want anything else and I'll make it for you."
His friend nodded, eating as fast as he could. It was most likely the first real meal he had in a while. "It's great! The best curry ever!"
"Slow down and try not to choke, Bam. There's definitely enough for you." Bam didn't seem willing to chase his pace, "I guess those 4 months didn't change your appetite or table manners."
"God, tell me about it. I haven't had a decent meal in months. I've missed all these wonderful and nostalgic flavours," he placed the now empty plate on the table, "the freshness and perfect spiciness of the curry, it's all so wonderful. You have always been the best cook, Khun."
"I'm," for just a second his smile faltered. But no, this was not what he ought to do. He recovered at once, "I'm glad you like it. I was worried that it was too spicy."
"No, of course not! The heat is just perfect. It got me sweating but it still feels good. I love it."
"Have some water too. Try not to choke." Bam obliged with a smile, emptying the glass and laying back down on his bed, "The Hyperion will take you to an Anti-Entropy base. Listen to the professors and follow their advice. They're good people."
"Okay, okay. I get it. Don't worry, Khun. I'll be fine."
"Yes, Bam. You'll be fine." he truly believed it, "I'll go do the dishes. Just lay down and rest."
.
Water flowed across Khun's fingertips and disappeared into the drain with a soft, weeping sound. While placing the dried plates on the shelf, he accidentally knocked down a wooden bowl. Several things fell. They were the sweet peppers used for making the curry.
He only had a few minutes before the 2 hours they promised ran out. Khun left the kitchen. The corridor was dark except for the medical bay that flickered in the distance.
.
"You're here." A voice came from above. Khun looked up and saw Hwaryun perched lazily on the roof. With a small huff, she landed softly on the ground. "Two hours. I like you. You're punctual."
"And I came alone as agreed."
Hwaryun nodded satisfied. The two of them opened the gates of the Roost and walked into the shelters. Despite disliking the quiet, Hwaryun didn't initiate a talk between them. After a while, they meandered down the lanes and arrived before a metal door.
"Here we are," she announced, "the Sire is beyond this door. He will meet you. Alone."
"Open it."
Hwaryun laughed as she pushed the door open, "You astonish me, Aguero. You completed your metamorphosis far quicker than I thought. May fate be on your side."
The metal door cracked even more open. Khun stepped through and entered a dark plaza. The complete lack of light makes it impossible to see. If they had wanted to ambush him, this would be the perfect place to do so. However, instead of a knife at his throat, he was greeted by a man's footsteps.
"Who are you?"
The air turned cold with his arrival. Khun felt as though he had walked into a freezer vault. It was similar to the aura of his Herrscher and yet much more outwardly, sinister. A great, oppressive weight welled within him and kept him rooted in place.
"Khun Marco. The leader of the World Serpent." His voice was calm and dispelled any feelings of oppression. Khun looked into his eyes. Both were devoid of anything. Except for a hint of sadness... a sadness that never healed and would never heal.
"A Khun." Not a relative of his, maybe a simple coincidence. No. It couldn't be luck. It was never luck.
"Aguero Agnis, you wish to save a boy. Neither Schicksal nor Anti-Entropy can help you. But the World Serpent can. You have my word."
"What do you want in return?"
"You." His voice was calm and his words were few, yet they felt like inviolate commandments etched upon stone. Khun found himself in a position where he bore the full brunt of his words.
"Tell me exactly how you would save him," he swallowed the worry in his voice, "I'll do anything you want but only if you really succeed."
The World Serpent's leader crossed his arms. His expression showed that he had no interest in negotiations and yet he let Khun waste his time. "Bam is dying. The Core infection is stronger than he can bear. His other Cores must be removed if he hopes to survive and there is only one way," he extended his hand towards Khun, "I will help you become the Herrscher of Ice again."
"What?"
"You were chosen. A channel linked to the Imaginary Tree will forever remain within you," he explained like a tired parent, "Absorb the residual energy from the 3rd Honkai Eruption and you will wake again to reclaim the power of Ice from Bam. You will gain a new Herrscher Core. The Gem within the boy will dissolve and his conditions will then improve."
His cold voice struck Khun with every word. He recalled the strange things he had witnessed. Dr. Garam's diagnostics, the sudden episodes of dizziness, and Hwaryun's sudden change in attitude.
He understood everything at once.
"I can save Bam by becoming a Herrscher?"
"Correct."
"Then there's nothing for me to worry about." Bam had been the one to pull him out of the darkness all these years ago. He was the sole reason Khun was who he is today. There was nothing he wouldn't do to save his life. "But if I were to be controlled by the Honkai, I want you to—"
"That will not happen." He reassured him, "You should think about what happens after you become a Herrscher." —Khun looked at him confused— "You can save Bam this time, but he will throw herself into danger again. He will use his Void powers to save the world and the people around him. So long as the Honkai and Herrschers exist, he will rise up to fight them and he will keep fighting till he dies."
The words sunk deep within him.
"I have seen many like him. Despite death and terror, they were armed with a belief that compels them to that path and all of them left, forever sleeping in the fields."
His words were razor ice that cut at her heart. He wanted to disagree but failed to find a counter-argument. For he knew he spoke the truth. No sacrifice he makes could change the inevitable.
"No. I won't let that happen. Never."
"You can't stop him. You know that. That is why you are here. But you have a choice. You can join the Serpent."
"Join the Serpent?"
"More Herrschers will appear soon. Humanity's war against the Honkai is escalating. Follow the World Serpent. Purge the Honkai. Capture the Herrschers. Seal their powers, and starve the Void King. Bam," he paused, "is only safe when you're not with him. Once Project STIGMA succeeds, both of you shall be human once again."
With a great explosion, a beam of light shot through the sky and shattered it into a million fragments.
"What just happened?"
"The time has come. The gate is open and the Imaginary Tree shall manifest itself in this city causing dormant Honkai energy will seep out of the Earth. Absorb it. Be the Herrscher of Ice once more to save him. But now there is only one way for you to keep him away from harm. You will have time to think about this, and to decide if you want to trust me and the World Serpent."
It now made sense why he had been so calm during their meeting. It was never a negotiation. He didn't need to convince Khun, lure him, or make him empty promises. He only needed to voice Khun's own thoughts at loud.
.
His ears echoed with the sound of beans dancing on a drum. The biting coldness even numbed his mind. Another persona had begun to take form. It was...rain. The downpour crept closer. It grew in intensity and became the peak of a thunderstorm. What had happened? He tried to open his hazy eyes but struggled. In front of him, there was nothing but chaos. The dim flashes of light seemed like puppet strings tugging at the ruined city.
Pieces of broken memories flashed past his mind, yet he failed to create a coherent picture. Even so, he was certain Helios was in danger. Bam was in danger. He started running, yet he did not know where to go. He runs amongst Honkai beasts, the splitting headache not allowing him to stand still and fight. Eventually, he had to stop or he'd pass out.
"Khun! Are you alright? Khun!"
Khun snapped his head to the distance and watched as Bam's figure approached him. Shearing winds tore the rest of the monsters apart and Black March landed itself next to Bam waiting for his orders.
"Bam? Why are you here? You're wounded! You can't just leave the Helios!"
"You're the one who shouldn't have left! You went missing and nobody could find you. Do you know how worried I was?" He shook his head, calming his nerves, "Let's not talk about that. The enemy might attack again. You should head back and join the professor."
"Go back? What about you?"
"I need to take care of this." Bam looked at the glowing pillar in the distance that stirred the circle of light in the sky. "I've seen that pillar before. I can use my Void powers to seal that hole in the sky and end this storm."
"What? No. No! You haven't even recovered! You shouldn't be anywhere near the fight!"
"I can't let this thing get any bigger, Khun. More monsters are coming. Honkai energy levels are rising. This disaster will soon spread to other places. I must end this!"
"Stop being so stubborn! Don't you know what's happening to you? If you do this, your body will—"
"I don't care!"
Khun felt everything shattered at that moment. He was unable to keep his cool any longer. Prickly tears threatened to spill from his eyes and Bam—he knew, he understood the pain, and he simply did not care.
"I know what's happening to me. To my body." he whispered, "To be honest, I was quite scared. I trembled at the thought of death. But I refuse to run away from danger! I'll do what I can and take responsibility for this. This is the only way I can seek atonement from the people I've hurt, from Master Jinsung," he turned around and smiled in the way he had always done, "It's alright, Khun. Just wait for me."
"Bam!"
The wind howled. Raindrops splattered on his face. Bam rode the dragon and flew straight for the circle of light. Khun shouted after him, but his voice was drowned by the storm of rain and flashes.
"Bam! Come back!"
He collapsed to the ground as pain bit into his body like twisted thorns. He lifted his head and gazed at the sky. The dragon and its master flew into the storm. A horde of Quantum Shadows flocked towards it. Bursts of golden light exploded with every battle.
"Please! Stop fighting!"
He knew he could not be heard. He knew the correct choice was to give up this hopeless attempt to save him. But he could not control his own body. He could not stop running. He could not stop thinking about him. He could not stop chasing after the light that lit his way in the dark.
He had always been a naive fool. A delusional child who expected food things to last forever. But in the blink of an eye, he had lost the most important constant in his life. Khun wasn't strong enough to protect him—he'd never be. And Bam had changed so much, all without changing at all. He was still the boy who would help a stranger in need. Despite the injustices, he had endured in this imperfect world. Despite the tragedies that could no longer be mended. He remained steadfast as ever. He would keep fighting for his friends, for other people, for that beautiful world he believed in.
Bam Grace would become a hero just like the world wanted.
But Khun—
.
There was darkness. Darkness as far as his eyes could see. An empty void devoid of sound, of life, of anything. Even the smell of decay was absent. He could feel his weightless body floating in the darkness. A familiar emptiness just like then. Just like that day three years ago. Back then, he had heard weeping and wailing, the sound of bodies failing, all that noise until there was nothing left except for silence. And now, it was that silence that welcomed him once more. He felt himself falling through it.
"It's been a while, you emotional wreck." A beam of light appeared along with a familiar voice. Blue hues took over the darkness. Eldritch streams wrapped around him and pulled him towards the light. "You've changed. A lot."
The voice of an untouchable realm whispered in his ears. It was a cold and dangerous voice. Yet it was also familiar and was something that he longed for. "This is the first time you've approached me on your own. Are you no longer afraid?"
Fear? No, Khun no longer felt fear. Just like there was no sense of angst, guilt, sorrow or pain. There was nothing inside him except for serenity.
"Keep going and you'll fall into a deeper abyss."
"It doesn't matter. I'll take his place instead."
"You will leave everything behind. You will lose your friends and family."
"It doesn't matter. I've always been alone."
"Mistrust and suspicion will hound you. You will be further down this lonely path."
"It doesn't matter," he says again. This time the Herrscher believes him, "It is a fate that I should have faced years ago."
"You will leave him for all eternity," it said. There was no cruelty in their words. Only the truth. "You will no longer be at his side, nor see his smile, nor take his hand. There is no turning back once you step onto this path. Are you sure this is your choice?"
The mantra returns. "It doesn't matter. The others will take care of him. This is something that I must do."
The Herrscher smiled, "Then go," its teeth shone in the dark, a faceless mask, "Bury me with your hands. Take up my fury and lament my passing. Take my place and assume your power alone. Tell the world that he has returned as the Ice King. Go now! Become the Herrscher of Ice!"
Energy surged forward and Khun gasped, holding on to it with all his might.
"Farewell, Khun Aguero Agnis."
.
He sees Bam breathing heavily. In front of him is a tall figure dressed in all black. Still, the vibrant blue hair is a giveaway.
"—weakened, but this will give you more time."
"Why?" Bam choked out, "Why did you save me?"
"Thank Aguero. He's the one who saved you." —Bam tried to get up, his balance still wobbly— "Nagazora is no longer your concern. The disaster has ended. Aguero saved the city for you."
"What? Khun?"
"I'll let him explain," Marco turned around and locked eyes with Aguero. As the newly reawakened Herrscher approached the two of them, the ground below began freezing.
"Khun," Bam breathed, "what happened? Why do you look like that?"
"You made your choice, I assume."
Aguero nodded and turned to fully look at the World Serpent leader, "I will go with you."
"Good. Welcome to the World Serpent, Aguero Agnis."
"Wait!" Bam yelled, "What did you just say? Khun! Are you going to join the World Serpent?" —Aguero remained silent— "What happened to you, Khun? What did he do to you?"
"I'm speaking with my own voice, Bam," he told him "This choice is my own. You, you don't have to care about me anymore."
Bam's eyes widened. It was the first time he had seen him like that—not simply determined, not cocky—it was pure fury. "Is this some stupid joke? I'm definitely not going to agree! I'm not letting you join the World Serpent!"
"Bam!"
"You seem to have some unfinished business," Marco noted and turned to leave, "Tell him what you want but be quick about it."
Tell him what he wanted. Could it ever be that simple? Would he understand his reasons? Would he be able to leave in peace? No. Telling him the truth would only result in more pain. Bam was bound to only blame himself and worsen his pain. Could he really be honest? He had told himself what he wanted him to hear countless times already. He was happy to have met him. They had done plenty of things together and had shared many beautiful moments. And now? To fulfil his dreams, Khun would gladly enter the darkness and return him to bliss.
"Khun, why? You know what they've done."
"I don't care."
"I'm not letting you leave!" Bam lunged forward, fast and precise as ever, throwing a sharp jab but Aguero dodged, countering with a brutal knee to the ribs. Bam staggered, but recovered quickly, twisting his body into a spinning kick that sent Khun skidding backwards. The moment's hesitation cost him—Aguero surged forward, driving a fist into Bam's jaw, snapping his head back.
"It's over, Bam."
"It's not finished yet. I won't let you leave!" Blood sprayed but Bam grinned through the pain, wiping his mouth before surging in again, fists flying, the air crackling with the intensity of their fight.
"You shouldn't use that power again, Bam. Give up."
Their battle raged through the ruined rooftop, the echoes of their strikes mingling with the wind's mournful howl. Aguero pivoted, seizing Bam's arm in a practised motion, twisting it behind his back before slamming him into a broken pillar. Dust and debris rained down as Bam gasped, but he retaliated, driving an elbow into Aguero's stomach and flipping over his shoulder to regain his footing.
"I won't!" Orion panted, eyes flickering with desperation. "I'm not letting you go."
"How? You can barely stand."
Bam hesitated for a fraction of a second—then his gaze hardened. "With my fists!"
With a roar, Bam launched forward, his fists a blur. His eyes shone a bright golden and his elbow aimed for Aguero's leg. The ferocity of the fight was clear. Bam aimed with all his might—Bam aimed to snap his leg in two. Aguero barely managed to block before countering with a powerful roundhouse kick, sending Bam crashing into the rubble. The victor had been decided, Aguero was certain.
Until the spikes came flying, grazing his neck and trapping him into place.
Now that the dust had settled, Bam emerged, battered yet resolute. The weight of his decisions is evident in his burning gaze. Evident in the golden eyes. The Herrscher powers had come to his call once more—how fitting. The second time in their fight Bam had foolishly, carelessly, used them to drain his own life span.
"You're always like this," he whispered. More to himself than to Bam, "Bam, you're always like this," his voice grew louder with the storm, "Even when you're battered, you'd still force a smile. You saved me. You saved us all. Yet you shoulder everything alone, at the cost of your life."
"Khun!" His friend called out desperately, "This is my mission."
There is no other way. For both of them.
"Maybe this is for the greater good," He leans forward, masters all his strength to break the spikes of the Void, and lets them sink into his flesh. Bam calls out to him, and begs him to stop, but none of that matters. "But how can I pretend this is the right thing? I only know that deep down the world means nothing to me without you!"
The Ice engulfs him as the power bursts out of him. It sends both him and Bam flying in the sky. The black holes the Void summons try to swallow his attacks—swallow him too—but Aguero refuses to back down. Eventually, he manages to knock Bam down, sending an ice spear his way to seal the deal. Bam, not the Herrscher. Not the hero, just the boy from Nagazora, who drifts down like a falling leaf.
It's all a terrible deja vu.
Khun reaches out—just like Bam had done back then—and lays his figure on the ground. There were so many things he wished his friend knew. He wished he could understand that the simple hand he had reached out on that day had changed their destiny, his destiny. He wished he knew he was the most important person in his life.
"If rescuing you is a sin, then I'll gladly become a sinner." He turned his back to him, "Farewell, Bam."
