Forgiven
“Here, let me have that jewel,” Linda gently took it from his hands, “I believe that Takeshi had come to search the place again after you left, unless you left your wife to die and continued searching for the jewel.”
“I didn’t get the opportunity to search. She collapsed even before I could search. So if there has been a search, it must be Takeshi,” Alexei replied, burying his face in his hands.
Suddenly the police burst in through the door. Alexei was going to say something, when Linda spoke up, “Umm…Officer, we’ve found a hidden jewel in the possession of the late Midore Ivanov. It was hidden in the melochord. Would you kindly take it into custody and give it to some museum?”
The officer beamed at them.
“Oh, yeah,” Michal added, “Mr. Ivanov wants no further investigation into the case. He can’t bear the memory of his wife to come haunt him every day. He’ll sign all paperwork. After all the forensics showed a heart attack. "
“Sure. You kids are a marvel,” the burly policeman commented.
When the last sounds of the police siren disappeared, Alexei turned to Michael with a question in his eyes.
“You must be thinking why we didn’t get you arrested. I think, the greatest punishment for you would be to live without your wife for the rest of your life. Then you might remember, never to misuse your medical knowledge and never to believe in myths. Your one myth of that jewel being cursed, actually lead to you losing her,” explained Michael.
And the six kids left, hand in hand. Leaving the stupefied Alexei, staring after them.
When the group looked back, Alexei was standing at the door, looking at the sky. Maybe trying to find a face in the clouds. A face that will never smile at him again, a life which was nipped before it could blossom.
The sun of his life had set already, leaving behind the pitch dark night, starless sky and a pressing darkness which seemed to smother him.
