Chapter 3: Smoke Without Fire
I tumbled down the stairs with a loud thud as I reached the ground floor. My head exploded as I heard footsteps approaching me.
"CHLOEEE WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOU???ARE YOU OKAY?" Scarlet said as she held my hand and pulled me up.
"Oh umm.. I just stumbled and fell." I can't tell her this. I can't open my mouth.
"Because....?" She sounded suspicious.
"I tripped." I shrugged and told her I will be downstairs.
"Hmm.. okay." she changed to her husky form and sprinted upstairs.
I fixed the wrinkles of my shirt and continued downstairs.
I went to the back door. I opened it and closed it tightly. It was cold outside, so I shivered and spun around, making sure no one was there, and so I took a torch hanging beside the door. I led the fire to a standing rough stone that had a key shape in the middle of it. I took out my necklace, causing my hair to go all tangled with the string. I pressed it to the stone and there appeared a staircase, leading to my, umm.. 'secretive lounge' thing. I made sure no one was there, and then I slowly walked down the staircase.
There were two turns. One for a bedroom and all its junk like a TV, a bed, a wardrobe which I only stored a few clothes, a bathroom, and other stuff you can figure out in a simple bedroom, just in case my house burned down or get robbed or something.
The other turn to the left led to my secret library. It stored all the ancient books I brought and actually found from Clovis. I loved to read, but now I don't. Because you know why? It sucks. I can't concentrate on what's happening because there are more important things than the book.
I scurried my way to the left turn. I opened the old wooden door. It creaked open, and I turned on the lights. It was bright by the shelves, but it gets dimmer by the couch. I used the ladder and climbed up. I climbed up the first 2 wooden flights, then I tried to find the book that held the legend, in fact, story of Clovis. Then, I climbed up another case and grabbed a book about Clovis, again, but this time its more detailed, most about the history, the parts of the land, etc. The book was thick, and it had a hard cover. Yes, okay, I stole it from a library at school back then, no big deal. The title was 'Everything about Clovis'. Yeah okay, the title kinda sucked, but I honestly don't give a shit. That's my favorite book, since it seems all familiar and brings back some of my memories that doesn't make sense these days.
I hopped off and sat down on the beige colored couch. I crossed my legs as I put down 'Everything about Clovis' down on the table as I put down the story book of Clovis on my lap.
I flipped pages, finding nothing helpful.
I groaned as I slammed the book. I stood up and went back upstairs, because I was too sleepy to read the other.
the next day
Friday.
I sat up straight on my bed, making my bed. I went straight to the shower, turning on the hot water, and putting on some clothes. This time I'm wearing a loose grey shirt with black skinny jeans and my white Converse. I grabbed a penny board and skated my way to school. Of course, I had to face the horrible students, but this time, there were only a few. Great, that means I'm early.
I continued skating until I arrived at the most hidden area of the school, the yard. The garden. 'The creepy garden', people say, is haunted. OoOoOoO.. so scaaaaarryyyy.
Pffft, like I care.
Pretty much, okay sometimes, it seems like a very creepy garden where ghosts would sit in those benches, scaring the crap out of people, but I feel like there was something special with this place. Maybe related to Clovis, but that's just a big mistake. Clovis doesn't exist anymore.
At least, that's what I thought it was.
I studied there for a bit, then headed back to my next class for the test, History. Then, the bell rang and I took the test. Goodluck, me.
2 hours later, it ended. The teacher took my paper. Gladly, exams are over. Yipee.
But...
Just as I stood up on my oh-so-boring-yet-best-out-of-all-the-chairs-in-the-class-because-it-has-a-great-view chair, I heard screams.
Those screeching screams, like those in horror movies.
I looked around. People were running, people were screaming "HELP!!". That was when I realized, there was smoke, and.. umm some red substance flooding over the ground.. blood?
I went out of my class, and asked my classmate, Dylan, who happens to be right next to me wandering about at the moment.
"Dylan, what the hell is going on?" I asked him.
"I'm not sure, but its like there's smoke." he said as he offered a hand, and I took it.
"Is it fire?"
"Surprisingly, no. It's just smoke. I dont really know what, but it's making people have anorexia, not literally." he said as we ran out the door.
"What do you mean?" I asked, oh great. JB is stuck in my head.
"Can't you see? They're puking their hearts out!" he yelled as he pointed out a guy, hurling blood against the floor.
As we went out, the smoke suddenly appeared, blocking the exit.
"Holy shit." I said as we ran another way, but we're trapped.
"What do we do now?" Dylan said in fear.
I thought for a minute.
"Come on!" I dragged him to the staircase, leading to the second floor, the third, and the roof.
I stopped to catch a breath as Dylan took a few steps up.
Unfortunately, the smoke started to fog my eyes.
"Chloe!" Dylan yelled. "Run!"
I couldn't.
"I can't idiot! Just go! Go!!" I yelled at him, and he did and apologizing look and ran up the stairs.
I tried not to inhale, but eventually, I had to.
Just as I inhaled, a red force zapped into my nose, shutting down my eyes.
Surprisingly, it fluttered open.
Wait, what.
I didn't puke blood, I don't have 'anorexia'. How could that be?
I then realized, maybe this is something related to Clovis.
Maybe.
Or not. Of course it's not.
I then ran back down, just to make sure people weren't stuck in there. I felt like Spiderman for once.
FOR ONCE.
Then, I felt a breeze rushing past me. From the fast eyes of mine, I saw...
Nick?
"Hey!" I yelled to him.
He stopped at his tracks and looked at me. Turns out he was carrying a girl, fainting. I think her name is Valentina? I don't know. She's one of the most beautiful girls in my level, but she's not a bitch, for all I know.
"Umm.. do I know you?" he said as he dashed to the exit. I chased after him.
"Excuse me? What are you doing dumbass? Are you trying to get yourself killed?!" I yelled at him, grabbing his shoulder from the back to catch my breath. He runs pretty fast.
"Uhmm.. I got this, okay? I'm not gonna.. experience these things people have been suffering on.. so I think you're the one who's trying to get yourself killed." he said as he dissapeared.
Wait, what?
I spun around, finding no one near me.
A few seconds later, he popped out of nowhere.
"Wait.. how did you-"
"No, I did not vanish and pop out of nowhere." he said, his eyes glaring down on me, his hands gesturing me to calm down.
"Oh, then I pretty much assume you a liar." I kicked him in the guts.
"Oww, that hurts!" he said as he groaned.
"Well aren't you gonna fight me back?"
"I don't fight girls." he said.
"Hmph, well fine." I don't have time for this
Wait. What if...
What if he's somehow in my situation? Considering that he doesn't mind this horribly creepy smoke and he disappeared and scared the crap out of me, maybe I can relate.
"Wait a minute..Nick."
"Hmm?" he said, neating out his wrinkled shirt, probably from carrying his hot 'girlfriend'.
"How are you not feeling any pain against this smoke shit thing?" I asked.
"Umm.. long story." he scratched his neck.
"I know you're lying to me." I said, tapping my foot against the marble floor.
"It's personal. You can't just hog." he said. Turning around and walking away.
"Wait!" I grasped my hand against his shoulder.
"Can you at least try..? I think I might help you out as well.." I said, eager to know everything that he knows.
After a while, he sighed and said "Fine, but you promise me not to tell anyone, and just text me whenever."
"I promise." I gave him a fist.
"Umm...what are you doing?" he stared at me like I'm an awful looking hippie.
"Aren't you gonna give your fist?" I said in a plain, boring tone.
"I thought we were supposed to pinkie swear." he said.
"What the hell, you're so gay." I said.
"I am not, thank you very much." he said as he finally bumped a fist. As our knuckles touched, I felt something odd in my skin.
Then suddenly, pain shot up my hand.
"Ouch!" I said as suddenly, a key-shaped glowing thing was.. well glowing under my skin.
I felt Nick look over, so I let go of my other hand that was grasping my shoulder.
"What was that?" Nick asked, concerned.
"Oh um.. nothing." I looked over again but the key was gone. Weird.
"Okay..." he said, giving me the glare. "For now, we have to get out of here before something bad happens again." he said as he thought for a minute and said. "Let's go to the rooftop."
"Please, didn't you think I thought of that earlier?" I said as I ran up the stairs before him, then suddenly, the smoke hogged my way, suddenly making a red power force, zapping right through my heart. I screamed in pain.
"Ouchhh!" I yelled, stumbling to the ground, as I felt a grasp from my back.
"Are you okay??" Nick asked, kneeling down on me.
"Uh..yeah I guess." I said as I made a run for it back upstairs, just trying to face out the awkwardness, even thought I'm probably gonna die any minute.
"What the hell, now you're seriously getting yourself killed." I heard Nick yell from the down part of the staircase, as I continued running. Luckily, the red death smoke wasn't there anymore so I arrived up the roof. A few seconds later, Nick appeared and ran ahead of me to the ladder leading to the ground floor, and I followed.
