Chapter 17 - Gethen
A/N: This chapter will take place during the part of Keeper of the Lost Cities: Book 1 when Gethen comes to Sophie's house in the form of a jogger and tries to grab her! I hope you enjoy the way that I portrayed this scene in Gethen's mind! BTW: All of the lines and dialogue is the EXACT one from the book, so yea! However, if you do happen to find any mistakes, please be sure to let me know in the comments (or in a PM), so that I can change it. Thank youuu, now hope you enjoy reading!
Gethen sighed as he stretched his legs. Why did human clothes have to be so TIGHT?
If only they had learned how amazing tunics and boots were!
Well, he had a mission to accomplish. So, he held on tight to his leash and lightleaped to a weird neighborhood in San Diego, California.
He looked for the girl's house number, which was 3472.
He found it about a minute later and saw the girl talking with some weird wrinkly human. Probably her grandfather or something. It didn't really matter.
Then Gethen crouched down to give a his Chihuahua something big and hairy. It was a tarantula.
The frightened dog started barking and yapping and flailing around everywhere as it took off down the street, towards the girl's house.
Gethen grinned, as his plan was working so far. Then he ran off too, following his dog.
As he sprinted closer, he could hear the older human man saying, "You should get back inside before the smoke gives you another one of those headaches you're always—"
Gethen wasn't able to hear the rest of his sentence because that annoying dog had barked right before the man finished his sentence and interrupted him.
Now, it was time to put Part 2 of his plan into action.
Gethen pretended to chase the dog on the street and when it fled across the girl's lawn, he yelled, "Would you mind grabbing her?"
The Moonlark widened her eyes and replied, "I'll try."
She ran around the yard as well, until she finally lunged down and stepped on the Chihuahua's leash in a clumsy movement. Then she kneeled down and stroked the terrified dog who became even more horrified once Gethen stepped closer.
He shouted, trying to make his voice heard over the yapping of the dog, "She's my sister's dog. She hates me. Not my sister—the dog," he added.
What was he doing?? He sounded so stupid. But, then again, humans sounded stupid too so he still probably fit it.
Then—as if to prove his point—Gethen held out his hand and presented lots of half-moon scars, some of which were still bleeding. It was so amazing what a little bit of lushberry juice could do if you wanted to make fake blood.
The girl let out a small gasp and brought the dog closer to her chest, trying to console it.
Gethen remarked, "I don't suppose you'd be willing to carry her back to my sister's house. It's just a few blocks away, and she seems to like you better than me."
He couldn't help but wink after he said it.
His plan was going so PERFECTLY well, he was starting to wonder if something had happened? It couldn't POSSIBLY be this easy, could it?
And then, it happened. Gethen had definitely jinxed it for now he could feel someone clawing into his mind. His gaze shifted toward the old man and he realized that it was he who was going into his consciousness. Gethen fought the urge to shout and instead battled with the man as he tried his hardest to push him out. However, no matter how hard he tried, he wasn't able to get the crazy man out of his head. Luckily for him, the wrinkly dude went out of his brain by himself a few moments later, a faint smirk apparent on his face.
Then, as the girl was about to open her mouth and answer, the man jumped in and said, "She most certainly will not. Sophie, go inside. And you get out of here right now or I'm calling the police."
Gethen narrowed his eyes, "I wasn't asking you—"
The man ignored him and said, "I don't care. Get. Away. From. Her. Now."
Gethen didn't listen but still kept his gaze on the man as he inched toward the girl—who's name was Sophie.
He was all set to grab her and go, but then that guy stepped in front of Gethen and straightened up, showing off his full height.
Gethen didn't budge until he realized that this wasn't worth it.
Instead, he backed away and ran back down the street, cursing under his breath because of that man.
But, then, it suddenly registered in his brain that the man had PROBED his brain. Only elves could do that. So... the man was actually an ELF.
Gethen turned around immediately and started running down the street again, trying to grab Sophie once more. But when he reached the house, the 2 elves were missing and there was no one there to be found.
