The Beginning
This is something I am going to give a try. Hope you guys like this story.
Darkness surrounded everything. A young woman slowly made her way through the deserted street. Her foot kicked a soda can and it went down the street with a loud clang.
"Shoot," she muttered looking at her surroundings.
A small snort caught her attention. Carefully she made her way over to an alley.
"Still hiding from me, huh?" The woman asked.
Suddenly two red eyes appeared in the darkness; a body soon followed. The young woman jumped back, eyeing the creature in front of her.
"By the New York Monster Council, you are under arrest for threatening innocent lives," she said.
The monster roared and charged in response.
"Why is this never easy?" She asked dodging the monster. "Okay big boy, you asked for it."
Drawing from her back pocket, the young woman pulled out her gun. One might think it was an ordinary 9mm handgun, but it wasn't. It had been modified to fire special tranquilizer bullets. Aiming for the monsters weak spot, the young woman fired and the monster fell two feet in front of her.
"One ugly monster down for the count," she chuckled as a black van slid to a stop beside her.
"Way to go Katherine," A man jumped out of the van a big smile on his face.
"Thanks Dad," Katherine said pulling off her hat, revealing rustic red hair pulled back into a curly ponytail.
Present
"DAAAAD," Katherine called slamming her hands on his desk.
Maximus Loor came out of his memory slightly startled. He looked up at his seventeen year old daughter, a small grin on his face. Though she had inherited her red hair from her mother, she did receive his height of six-one and startling blue eyes. Maximus snorted as she stood in front of him.
"To what, do I owe the pleasure, my darling?"
Katherine wrinkled her nose, a sign that she was almost past her limit in patience.
"Dad, I'm going crazy. Please tell me that there is a case I can tackle. I'll take anything!" Katherine partially begged her father.
Maximus sighed. He understood Katherine's frustrations. Ever since the incident, she had been put on strict probation until further notice.
"I would love to tell you that there was something, but the only cases I have, have already been assigned," Maximus said hoping to calm her down.
Katherine growled in frustration. She knew that her older brother was one of those agents and it irked her beyond belief. Just then, her brother Josh, burst through the door his shirt singed but a smirk planted on his face.
"Guess who just single handedly took down two monsters with one bullet?"
"Lets see, not the guy with his shirt burnt," Katherine snarked sitting down on her father's desk.
"What's the matter? Pretty Princess, in a bad mood because she can't work on any cases?" Josh taunted trying to patronize her.
Katherine growled dangerously.
"Enough," Maximus interrupted before the two went at each other.
The siblings glared at each other, before turning back to Maximus.
"Now Josh, since you say that you took down both those monsters, I am going to need a full detailed report."
Josh's face took on a look of surprise. Katherine smirked, because she knew that he had only been the distraction.
"Unless, you were smart and have it now," Maximus asked eyeing his son skeptically.
Josh placed the file on the desk and plopped down in an empty chair.
"Now as for you Katherine, I understand that you are going crazy. But you brought this on yourself," Maximus said.
"You make a mistake one time," she muttered.
"You almost killed the poor man," he argued.
"Not my fault the creep wanted use that guy as a shield!" Katherine snapped.
"Still, a civilian was hurt because you were willing to take down a monster."
Katherine let out a exasperated sigh crossing her arms in a pout.
"I get that you two are hunters and your genes say you must do it, but what's the big deal?" Josh asked breaking the tension.
"Well Son, the best way to describe it is, being a hunter is not a job description. It is who we are, our blood basically screams out to hunt and the only way to pacify it is to bring them down," Maximus explained.
"So there is no hope for me then," Josh asked.
Katherine gave him a sympathetic look. He always felt left out because she was a hunter and he was just an ordinary human. That's why they always picked at each other, so he could get out his anger.
"Josh, just because we're actual hunters doesn't mean you aren't important. Besides we always need a distraction," she said grinning.
"Yeah, yeah, you are one to talk," Josh snipped.
Katherine's eyes flashed dangerously.
"Be that as it may, Joshua you may not have the hunter's gene but you are important," Maximus said getting up and placing a hand on his eldest's shoulder.
"Thanks Dad, but one question. Can Kat's probation be over? Her job is a lot harder than it looks."
Maximus chuckled while patting his shoulder.
"Believe it or not, I have spoken with the main council and they have agreed to give her a challenge."
"Really, yes finally getting out of here!" Katherine cried jumping off the desk. "What's the challenge?"
"Training a new recruit," Maximus said watching her face.
"What?" Katherine said, not what she had in mind.
"Ohhh, looks like you just got burned," Josh teased.
"That doesn't even make any sense," Katherine snapped.
Josh busted out laughing glad that he didn't have to do anything like that. However Maximus wasn't done.
"Don't laugh Joshua, you are hereby placed on desk duty until your sister is done."
"Ohh," Katherine said.
Josh stopped laughing and stared at his father.
"Seriously?"
Maximus nodded and picked up his phone.
"Please send him in."
Josh slumped against his chair, relieved. Katherine kept her back to the door and didn't say a word. She was happy that she was finally getting back into the field while she was also mad that she had to babysit a new recruit. The door swung open to reveal the new recruit.
