World Building

Here are The United Districts of Katharos, a nation that is based loosely on the U.S. It is a nation of 15 Districts, each with their own unique district seal and signature characteristics. I do have this published in another book, but I figured this would be easier to do for anyone new to my account

The shape of the Districts are inspired by a 7-pointed faerie star because I thought it looked cool and felt like a nation based off the shape would be neat ^^ Each district has signature magics, however this only means that people born in these districts are more likely to develop those specific or related abilities; it's not a guaranteed thing and there has been a shortage of people actually born with magical abilities ever since The Rot arrived on the continent, many theorizing that the magical plague has thrown off the energies of the rest of the continent.

Now, to go more into depth with the Districts (I will probably add more the more I work on this, I kinda just wanted to give an update on what I've been working on ^^)

Alcmene District

Characterized by its many mountain ranges, especially by the moon-shaped range titled the Evernight Mountains in the shape of a crescent moon, the Alcmene District is one shrouded by night and snow. The citizens of Alcmene are more tribal by nature, and when it comes to sending a representative to the Capital District they come together and elect a head representative as well as members of their diplomatic entourage being from other tribes. They don't tend to interact much with other Districts unless absolutely necessary. The people of Alcmene come off as cold, aloof, independent, and indifferent. They aren't known as being good communicators unless it comes to matters that involve their tribe. They have very traditional values, are more in-tune with magic and tend to worship elemental spirits and gods. They don't deal with a lot of technology with even some tribes being incredibly anti-technology. The main power that is associated with Alcmene is healing, however they possess a lot of night-themed powers as well, including: shadow travel & manipulation, incredibly talented trackers and hunters, night-vision, resistance to the cold, and teleportation. It is nicknamed "The Dark District," not only because of the anti-technology aspect of the district, but the district is also shrouded in darkness for roughly 3/4's of the year. On their district seal is the crescent moon as well as stars representing the different tribes living there.

Arizan District

A district that supplies most of the U.D.'s logging and mining industry, they have a mid-west vibe to them, there are a multitude of small towns with a multitude of forests and mountain ranges shared with the Alcmene District surrounding them. They're also known for being a popular camping, fishing, and hiking district with its close ties to nature. The magic typically associated with this district has themes related to nature as a result, specifically abilities including communication with & control over animals, but also enhanced speed and strength, protection magic, and shape-shifting. The people themselves are known for their friendly disposition and hospitality, down-to-earth nature, being hard-working, patriotic, and religious. They do have a wariness of outsiders and it may take some time and effort to earn their trust, but once accepted it will be like you're a part of the family. They are also interested in new forms of technology, especially in regards to mining, harvesting, and preserving natural resources. They're very big on community and have close family ties. Their district seal consists of a cedar tree with branches that almost appear like antlers that represents their ties to nature as well as the tight bonds within families (were the first users of the genealogical organization method known as the family tree).

Gyrum District

A district that blends the appeals of the Arizan and Huon Districts that got its start as a farming community with local breweries and distilleries before expanding to be the more tourist-attraction-y district we know today. Their primary magic is control over mercury and metals and other elemental manipulation magic, but they are also known for possessing super-speed, healing, and shape-shifting capabilities along with being excellent navigators. The Gyrum and Arizan districts have had a complicated relationship with magic, especially with the witch trials that denotes one of the darker times in the two districts' histories, but they have grown to accept those gifted with magic and actually celebrate those that show signs of developing talents that are sure to benefit their local communities. Their district seal consists of the caduceus, a staff intertwined with two snakes with feathered wings on either side.

Huon District

The more popular tourist destination, this district is all about entertainment (think New York kind of vibes). Some of the most famous actors, musicians, playwrights, etc. from the U.D. come from/are discovered in Huon. As a sort of melting pot district there are many different kinds of magic associated with Huon that its characteristic magic is more figurative than literal: prosperity and discovering hidden gems. The glamorous industrial district is constantly evolving, and as a result has one of the richest cultures due to their historical roots and fast-paced present. It is home to iconic theater shows, diverse museums, and vibrant lights that give it its reputation as the district that never sleeps. The people that call Huon home are incredibly diverse, but they all seem to have a passion for community while being competitive and independent. It's district seal consists of a geometric/modernized pine cone design. Huon is the only district known for always changing up its seal but always keeping the original's spirit alive as it was originally a pine tree. The Huon District also owns and operates Caspark Island, the Island of Entertainment.

Hesperus District

A district that was originally only known as the plantation and pleasure district where its citizens were allowed to perform all sort of debauchery, it has a dark past that it has been trying to recover from. It has been making efforts to improve its reputation, however there is a lot of corruption still running rampant in its government with ties to rulers (politicians) from the other Districts, especially Aelius. Despite this complex past, the district has a rich soul culture around food and music, which has helped in fixing it's image through festivals that celebrate these aspects of their culture. The people are typically very friendly and hospitable, however they won't hesitate to call people out on their b.s. They are very passionate about changing their communities for the better, including fighting against industrial plants and facilities that are polluting local water sources and many are fairly religious. The magic their district is known for is enchanted contracts, especially those made with gods and spirits. Its district seal is that of "The Veiled Lady," the visage of a beautiful freckled woman with half of her face covered by a veil while the other shows her eye open and looking up, as if looking forward to a brighter future. It has changed from the initial seal dubbed "The Weeping Lady," a seal depicting the visage of a beautiful woman with her eyes closed, chains around her neck and a cloth covering her mouth. A reason why it's called "The Weeping Woman" is that, due to the overwhelming sorrow of the people being used and abused in Hesperus that many of the physical depictions of the seal, whether it be engravings, sculptures or paintings, black tears that look like oil would drip from the woman's closed eyes, staining her cheeks, no matter the material that was used. It is also from the Hesperus District where the Beloved Saints of Carys was started when a runaway slave somehow came across an old relic of the goddesses' and became her loyal follower and priest, growing her cult and advocating for change in the district. (This particular district is loosely inspired by Louisiana).

Albacine District

The romantic district where much of Katharos's orchards, vineyards, and rose gardens are located. It's essentially the more positive, pure version of Hesperus and is one of the nation's top agricultural producers, even though it does share some dark history with Hesperus in its plantation history with the initially blurry border between the two districts. The people are kind, hospitable, respectful, and polite as they pride themselves on their charming decorum and reputable manners. The demographic of the south-eastern district consist of those that come from old money, middle-class and blue collar workers, and the often ignored poor populations that only get any relief when a politician wants to solidify their reputation as being affable and "willing to help others, no matter what". They also tend to be more wary of the supernatural, as they're a very religious district. The district's signature magics are love potions/manipulations and plant manipulation, the district known for its excellent matchmakers and bountiful harvests. Its district seal is that of two roses intertwined with a ribbon keeping them together, signifying the district's reputation as the lovers district.

Aelius District

The district that is purely a naval military district where citizens from all over the nation come to be trained in sea-based combat and sailing are housed in Aelius. Although their access to the seas are a bit limited, they share a line of naval ports with the Psionise District. Some of the nation's best naval captains, engineers, and tacticians come from Aelius, though there are rumors about how many of the district's leaders have historically been involved with scandals in Hesperus. The people are often characterized as dutiful while on duty and mischievous trouble makers or studious and upright individuals while off duty with various behaviors in between. The district is also known for its pirating history, as for the longest time the district was controlled by pirates, some being properly authorized by the Council of Katharos while others were simply stealing and pillaging nearby countries and districts. The district has some troubles with corruption amongst its rulers, but it seems as though it has been slowly clearing up due to the intervention of the Katharos's central district, Nicosia. The district's signature magics revolve around light and water manipulation and combat magic. The district seal is that of the sun shining over waves of the sea.

Psionise District

The intellectual district, some of the nation's best scholarly minds come from Psionise (think Alvis from South Adanvita). The district is also well known for beach resorts, amusement parks, nightlife, and nautical recreation due to its wide access to the ocean and its warm, sunny climate. Due to the nature of those drawn to Psionise, the diverse population that calls it home has a reputation for being fairly friendly yet incredibly eccentric. They are pretty relaxed and are used to the large amount of tourists they get throughout the year. The district's signature magics are memory, telepathy, telekinesis, electrokinesis, and the use of grimoires, though it seems like there's been more of a focus on the sciences for the past few centuries. The district seal depicts two interlocking vertical circles with a triangle at the center where the circles overlap, an open eye at the center of the triangle with thyme motifs sprinkled into the design.

Marzia District

Where the Aelius District supplies naval personnel, Marzia is very much the land and air-focused army and aviation district. The district is known for it's large cities, army and aviation bases, airlines, diverse landscapes, and southern hospitality. It has a 2/3 ratio of servicemen and their families to civilians, but all citizens tend to be treated fairly evenly as everyone is big on respect for those around them no matter their rank and with their loyalty to their identity as Marzians. These individuals tend to be rather independent and value their privacy, though that doesn't stop them from being really friendly towards strangers... unless they want to start a fight, in which case they better be ready to loose as Marzians rarely back down and always settle a fight one way or another. In the land of the free and the district of firearms, they also are very big on guns and weaponry in general. Marzia District's signature magics are protection and combat magic, levitation/flight, and pyrokinesis. The district's seal is that of a specific shield called the ancile with the head of the wolf at the center with flames in the background.

Porphura District

A politically-focused district that often uses holistic practices, it is also known for being where many of the nation's diplomats are born and raised. Porphura is also known as the intelligence and espionage district, responsible for clocking internal and international threats to the United Districts of Katharos and communicating said threats to either the Marzia or Aelius districts to deal with or using assassins to take care of specifically political threats. The people are characterized as polite and kind, yet also intelligent and competitive, loyal to the country but primarily self-interested. They're an innovative and resourceful bunch, and prefer to handle most conflicts through diplomacy (so long as those conflicts aren't threats to the security of Porphura or the U.D.K. They are also known as the "Dreams District," where "everyone's dreams can come true," as one of the biggest film industries known as Glamorwood (the Alamea version of Hollywood) calls it home. Porphura's signature magics is dream/sleep manipulation, truth, and invisibility/stealth magic. Its district seal is that of a geometric butterfly with lavender and circle patterns (with the circles being implied to be eyes, almost kind of like a biblically accurate butterfly now that I think of it).

Chrysus District

The lost district that was once known as one of the most prosperous districts, it has now come under the corruptive forces of The Rot. A plague that devastates both humans and other living species, the land has become uninhabitable save for the rare few that were able to survive the plague, only to turn into the Sapíla: twisted, rotting living corpses, only some of which still retaining their ability to speak. Others have become incapable of human speech, instead communicating through snarls and shrieks. Despite their rotting limbs, they move incredibly fast, and while they don't seem to need to eat anything they attack any uncorrupted living beings that dare venture into the corrupted district, tearing and devouring their flesh. Those that were able to escape The Rot now live in the nation's capital district of Nicosia, ever fearful of The Rot potentially spreading to the rest of the continent. The Rot has been kept at bay due to the holy and divine priests from Salvia called The Salvus Order, making home bases around The Rot to prevent it from spreading to the rest of the districts. There is already signs of The Rot spreading into Laurus, Sabatos, and Porphura, though The Order has been working on trying to purify the land and even those that have become corrupted.

Laurus District

The Laurus District is nicknamed the "Weather District" due to the volatile weather they often experience, such as tornadoes and often volatile temperatures. It has a variety of landscapes as well, anything from grasslands, plains, pastures, forests, and some desert sections due to the border they share with Sabatos. The people of the Laurus District have a reputation for being independent, resourceful, caring, and almost "uncomfortably nice". They're very environmentally-minded (both due to the unpredictable weather that can cause environmental damages, but also because of their battle with The Rot) and have strong communities. They tend to be farmers and ranchers, if not specializing in aeronautics. The district's signature magics are divination and prophecy as well as weather manipulation (only to some extent). The district seal is a laurel wreath with a pentacle in its center, signifying the area's close ties to the elements and spirits.

Sabatos District

The district known for fortune and creativity, Sabatos District is what many would call surreal and fast-paced with the gorgeous desert backdrop of Sabatos's environment. It has a vibrant nightlife culture with its casinos, fine dining, night shows, and club scene due to it being a major resort district. It also has a large amount of liberal arts colleges and museums that encourage locals to embrace their artistic sides with many having wings dedicated to local artists and history. The people of Sabatos tend to be pretty laid-back yet lively and free-spirited with a variety of lifestyles. The district's signature magic revolves around luck manipulation, but just like many of the other districts there are a variety of magic abilities due to the draw the district has for many people. The district seal consists of two congruent squares with the same center placed at 45° angles behind a lotus blossom.

Salvia District

Nicknamed the "Religion District," Salvia is very closely modeled after the country of Elocia, as that's where a lot of its earlier settlers came from Elocia. They tend to have stricter laws around the typically "immoral" things, like gambling, drinking, etc. While they are very religious, the past few hundred years Salvia has been great with religious tolerance for religions outside of the dominant one. While Katharos explicitly preaches a separation of church and state, the lines are a bit blurry in Salvia. The people of Salvia tend to be very morally upright yet prone to being proud of how "righteous" they are. They do a lot of humanitarian and charity work, one of their more well-known organizations being The Salvus Order helping to control and find way to eliminate the spread of The Rot. Due to the nature of the district, the signature magic tends to be holy in nature and typically revolves around healing and purification magic. Salvia's seal is a triquetra behind a sprig of flowering sage.

Nicosia District

The Nicosia District is essentially the heart of the United Districts of Katharos, as it is the district where the governing bodies of the other districts, mainly through representatives, live and work together to improve and keep Katharos safe (Washington, D.C.- esque). Many of the refugees from Chrysus have made their homes in the district as well, and tend to be in high ranking positions throughout the district. It is full of middle-class and working citizens with the occasional representative, and is a bustling cosmopolitan area full of government buildings and museums talking about the nation's history. The district seal of Nicosia is the connected 7-pointed faerie star that represents all of the districts painted with their signature colors with Nicosia remaining clear or white. Representatives from the other districts are given medallions where the Nicosia district seal is embedded with jewels or other precious materials from the different districts in their signature colors.
