Sayuri had finally begun to adjust with her new post as Drake Enterprises' CEO, she had gotten the hang of it with the help of her father's trusted partners and just as they had all hoped, Drake Enterprises was set on the path to recovery.
After Jack's imprisonment, the company had been defamed a great deal but now that Sayuri had taken charge, things were starting to look up at last. With new policies and a new take on its former projects, the company once again rose into the citizen's good books and investments started to pour in.
The Gotham press was most excited to cover the whole story of the recovery of Drake Enterprises as well as its new CEO, but Sayuri had put off their interview requests for the time being.
Recently she had been working on hosting an exhibition to display all of Drake Enterprises' new ideas, she had gotten the idea from Richard who once told her that Wayne Tech held an annual gala that worked as promotion for the company. All the arrangements for the event as well as the proof checking of their products was keeping her incessantly occupied.
It was way past her off time as night had fallen. She had just finished a meeting with the event planners when she decided to call Richard to see if he was free for dinner.
But he did not receive the call, there was no voicemail either which was highly unlikely considering Richard's habit of changing the voicemail every single day. She would have dismissed the inner feeling of dread but couldn't because when she called Tim instead, his cell phone was powered off.
She tried Jason next but there was no response from him either.
Not knowing what could be the cause to their sudden unavailability, she left the building but was even more surprised to see Jason waiting out for her on his bike. He was in his vigilante suit, the helmet covering his face.
Sayuri was lucky that no one else had been staying for overtime or else people could have gotten suspicious. Checking that there were no I wanted witnesses, she approached Red Hood.
"Buckle up," he threw her a helmet as well, gesturing her to sit behind him.
"But what hap..."
"Not enough time, I'll explain everything but later," he interrupted her, revving up the engine as she climbed behind him, fastening the helmet on her head.
Her head was whirring with a thousand questions which she couldn't ask him because he was driving rather fast and the wind brushed past them roughly, making her hold on tight.
She realized they had taken a detour to the Manor and approached it from the back when Jason made a sharp turn and the bike descended down a shaft.
They had entered a huge cave like structure and Jason parked his bike next to an assortment of various other vehicles one of which was the infamous Batmobile.
"Jay, what's going on?" She whispered not sure whether she should be addressing him by his name or not.
He took off his helmet, "promise me that you will not panic."
"I promise," she replied immediately, impatient to know what had happened because with all the haste and secrecy she couldn't help but think that it was definitely something worse.
"Dick got injured on patrol," he spoke up at last, "you're in the Bat Cave right now and he's being kept in the medical unit of the cave."
Her face paled at his words but she maintained her composure, "is he alright?"
"Now? Yes. Much better. He's just broken a leg, nothing fatal. Tim and Bruce were against the idea of telling you but I thought you deserved to know," he remarked but then as an afterthought, he added, "eh screw it, I just wanted to disobey the old man again. Anyways, Dick gets extremely dopey when he's on meds and I couldn't tolerate babysitting him so I'm now leaving you in charge."
"Hey, wait a second. Slow down, will you?" It had all happened in such a rush that Sayuri was still making sense if his words in her head, "you're leaving me in charge...?"
"I mean I'm sure you can look after him much better than I could," he winked, flashing her a bright smile despite the situation, "and if you're thinking that why am I not bothered at all by this whole ordeal, that's because it happens too often. Much too often for my liking."
"So it's not severe, right?"
"Nope. He'll walk again, no worries."
Relief dawned on her features as she nodded, "oh, good to know. But if it's not that serious then why had you guys made such a huge fuss out of it? And why did Tim and Bruce not want me to find out?"
He shrugged nonchalantly, "they just didn't want you to get worried. But I screwed that up, didn't I?"
She shook her head, slightly amused at Jay's dramatics, "none of you were answering my calls. That was bound to get me worried."
He led her deeper into the cave making his way towards the medical unit, "Tim said you were busy for an event or something. Bruce said it didn't matter if they just hid Dickybird's injury for the time being. And I said, hell no I'm going to tell Sayuri right this fucking instant!"
A slow smile flickered on her face, "you sure are an utter statement, Jason Todd."
"Appreciate the compliment, my lady," he stopped in front of a door, "behind this door lies your task for tonight; a temporarily crippled twenty five year old who simply wouldn't shut up. Fair warning though he will behave a lot different because the painkillers make him sleepy so take whatever he says with a pinch of salt."
She nodded, "thanks for the tip."
"Anytime," he shrugged, "by the way, if he makes a sappy love confession, let me know. Me and Barbara are betting on it."
She rose an eyebrow skeptically, "really Jason? Now of all times..."
He chuckled, "and if he asks you out and you don't tell us, then I swear I'll ruin all your future dates."
She shook her head, "he won't ask me out."
Jason raised an eyebrow skeptically, "and how can you be so sure?"
A smile flickered on her face as she remarked, "because I might do it first."
"Oh. Best of luck then," his grin widened as he gave her a high five.
She glanced in through the glass panel inserted in the door that showed Richard in a room that looked as if it had been taken straight out a hospital, his leg was held up and plastered to keep the bones in place while his eyes were closed as if taking a short nap.
"I'll leave you here," Jay spoke up directing her attention towards himself, "and I'm sure I'm placing my brother in good hands."
"Yeah don't worry. Just like you said, I can take much better care of him than you would," she replied before pushing open the door and stepping inside.
Jay gave her a thumbs up and disappeared shortly afterwards, probably glad to get free from his task of babysitting Richard.
