[16]
Richard had made up his mind to find out about Sayuri's past himself and that was the reason he was in the prison quarters of the GCPD, with a request filed to visit Jack Drake.
If what Tim suspected was correct, then Jack could have all the answers they needed to figure out the cause of Sayuri's frequent breakdowns.
Her mental health was declining due to the persistent night terrors and the lack of sleep was not helping with her condition either. Tim had moved in with her for a few days in order to look after her, upon Bruce's approval, leaving her only when he went to school or on patrol.
The shocking aspect was that Sayuri had been suffering for years without letting it reach the surface, but now all the smoke inside her had become intolerable for her. The lack of proper medication and treatment as well as constantly over exerting herself with her jobs had consumed a lot of her strength, leaving her more at risk to such draining breakdowns.
He had asked Gary Dunham, his colleague, whether Sayuri had visited her father earlier. And Gary, who had been on duty that day, confirmed it as well as showed him the taped footage of her visit.
Richard had seen the footage closely and had assessed that whatever conversation had taken place between father and daughter, had undoubtedly been quite stressing for Sayuri.
It confirmed his suspicion that Jack knew about what had happened to his daughter in all the years she had been away from Gotham. And right then, he wanted to personally ask him some questions regarding it.
Soon enough, Jack was brought into the visiting room and seeing Richard, his face took on a rather worn out expression, as if he wasn't willing at all to meet him.
"Mister Drake," he greeted him to which the latter merely nodded in reply. "I have a few questions to ask from you."
"Are you sent here by the police department, to investigate something which I might have withheld from you even though I've been here for three years?" his voice was laced with hatred and weariness.
"No Sir," he shook his head, "I've come on my own disposition. I wish to talk to you about Sayuri."
Hearing her daughter's name from him seemed to have sparked up a different kind of anger in Jack Drake, "stay away from my daughter!"
"Mister Drake, it's not like that. I only want to ask a few questions, that's all."
"First, you took my son away from me and now that Sayuri is here, you Waynes are attempting to take her away from me as well!"
Richard was a bit taken aback at the outburst, "absolutely not, Sir, I have no such intentions."
"Then why are you suddenly interested in knowing about her," he demanded, "why are you asking questions about her? What right do you have..."
Richard had to interrupt him in order to put a stop to his increasing panic which could alert the officers outside who were taping the visit as per routine, "I'll be very honest with you, but please listen to me at first." He then resumed in a gentler tone, "I am just a friend of your daughter's and have been concerned about her these days."
Jack paused at that, features drawing with worry, "why? What happened to her?"
He took a deep breath, "Sayuri is not well. She was hospitalized a few days ago."
Jack's already pale face drained even more upon hearing that and the contempt from his voice was replaced with concern, "how...?"
"She had passed out in her office so Tim and a colleague of hers had taken her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with PTSD," he elaborated, "or rather Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has been suffering from persistent nightmares as well as breakdowns which I fear are not going to be any good to her health."
Not a single word left his mouth as he assessed the information told by Richard.
"Mister Drake," he spoke in a soft but firm tone, emphasizing upon the question, "do you know anything about the traumatic experience she could have suffered as a result of which she had been diagnosed thus?"
Jack refused to answer, clenching his jaw shut for he knew that Sayuri would never want anyone to know about that, "I don't know what you're talking about."
However, his attempt at withholding the truth wasn't escaped by Richard, "Mister Drake, I only wish to help your daughter. I know you are aware..."
He roughly interrupted, "if you really want to help her, Officer Grayson, then I request you to just leave her alone."
"But Sir..."
"Sayuri will be fine," he remarked however it seemed as if he was saying that in attempt to convince himself rather than Richard, "she doesn't need your help." Then looking at the clock, he spoke, "visiting time is over, I must retreat to my cell."
Richard had realized that it would be no use to make him stay anymore but he tried to make one last attempt, "Mister Drake, please reconsider this. I only want what's best for both Tim and Sayuri. I don't know why you think that I or rather any of the Waynes for that instance are attempting to take them away from you; they are your children and you have your right on them. I am only concerned for them as a friend, that's all."
"Officer Grayson," his tone was stern as he addressed him, "I have said this once and I'll tell you again; if you want what's best for Sayuri, you will stay away from her. And I am hundred percent sure that she will tell you the same if you ask her yourself."
Richard stood up, gesturing the officer outside to take Jack back. He had received nothing worthwhile from that visit and the disappointment was evident from his face. Though he was now certain that Jack knew a lot more than he apparently revealed.
But his last sentence was still bothering him. Why did he think that it would be best for Sayuri if Richard stayed away from her? And why was he so certain that she probably thought the same?
Shaking off all the thoughts clamoring in his head, he made his way out of the room as well shortly after Jack was taken back to his cell. He knew it would soon be time for him to leave for patrol and he had also promised Tim to drop by afterwards.
However, he couldn't get rid of the odd feeling that had settled in his heart. There was still much more to Sayuri than he and Tim had been able to figure out by then. And whatever she was hiding from everyone was slowly but steadily taking its toll on her.
