The Picnic

Listen to Love You Still (abcdefu romantic version) by Tyler Shaw.

Katara POV:

"Haha! I'm winning!" Katara yelled victoriously.

"Not for long!" Aang declared, using his airbending to give him an extra burst of speed.

"Hey!" Katara exclaimed, furiously. "We agreed no bending you cheater!" She bent some of the water out of her pouch and sent it flying at her boyfriend, where it it caught his foot and froze, causing him to trip and fall flat on his face.

"Hey!" Aang sputtered in outrage.

"Cheaters never prosper Sweetie!" Katara sang as she zipped past him, reached the top of the hill, winning the race. She stood there for a moment with her hands on her hips, basking in her victory. She probably should've predicted that Aang wouldn't appreciate that. One moment she was feeling taller than Kyoshi, and the next Aang grabbed her waist and tackled her to to the ground.

She landed with a wump on her stomach in the soft grass. Aang lay grinning beside her, his arm still draped over her. She giggled in spite of herself . "We're not very responsible adults are we?"

"Nope!" Aang replied happily.

Katara flipped herself over and sat up. Aang did the same. "Do you have the picnic basket?" she wondered.

Aang craned his neck to look around. "I thought I did..."

Katara pushed him playfully. "If you go get it, I'll forgive you for cheating."

"Anything to get back into your good graces, I guess." Aang rolled his eyes and smiled. He bounded back down the hill hill to retrieve the slight squished picnic basket. Katara just stood and watched, smirking.

Aang dropped the basket at Katara's feet and put his hands on his knees, panting. "Its...pant...a good thing...huff...I love you!" He gasped.

"Thank you, Sweetie." she laughed, kissing his cheek.

They spent the next few minutes positioning the picnic blanket so that neither of them felt like they were going to tumble backwards off the hill. Finally, they laid down on the blanket side by side; their fingers laced together. The fluffy cumulus clouds were constantly changing shape against the stunningly blue sky.

Katara's eyes tracked them lazily, an equally sluggish smile playing on her lips. She point up a cloud. "Look at that one!"

Aang snickered. "It looks just like Appa!"

"You think every cloud looks like Appa."

"No I don't!"

"Right." Katara said skeptically.

Slightly disgruntled, Aang scrunched up his face in concentration. "That one, uh, that one looks like Momo!"

It didn't.

Katara nodded slowly. "Um, maybe?"

"Everbody's a critic." Aang grinned. "What's for lunch?"

"Sea prunes." Katara answered automatically and with a straight face.

Aang's face scrunched up in revulsion for a second before he could get a hold on himself. He cleared his throat. "Sounds delicious!"

Katara shook her head at him, exasperated. "It's been years Aang, I wish you'd try them again."

"Um, maybe... I'm not really that hungry now that I'm thinking about it."

"Sometimes I think you never grew out of being twelve." Katara said. "But you can relax. I was just kidding."

"Soooo, does that mean that there's no sea prunes?"Her boyfriend wondered tentatively.

"No. I didn't want you getting grouchy."

"Thank heavens!" Aang gasped dramatically.

"Yeah, yeah." Katara rolled her eyes.

"Did I mention how beautiful you look today?"

"Ok, you can stop now." Katara huffed, turning her head away, knowing full well that he could see her blushing and that he was smirking.

Aang shrugged and put his hands behind his head. "Just saying."

Katara's cheeks stayed pink as she sat up and unpacked some food that was not sea prunes. They ate and talked about random, little things. Less to say what they were thinking and more the hear each other's names in their voices. While they were sitting, Katara felt Aang take a long look at her and squeeze her hand. He stood up, looking a little nervous and twitchy.

"I'll be right back. I have to check on Appa."

"Wh-?  Ok." Katara shrugged. She knew that Appa was probably perfectly fine, but she knew how Aang felt about his bison so she stopped herself from interrogating him.

"Do you want me to take the picnic blanket back down while I'm at it?" Aang wondered, already grabbing the handle.

"Uh...sure." He was acting really weird. Katara touched her hair. She couldn't pretend like she hadn't been hoping for a bigger question on this picnic than "what's for lunch?". This had to be it. Heat started to creep into her cheeks and she thanked the Spirits that Aang had already turned away, basket in hand.

Aang was down the hill in two enormous hops that would've been impossible if not for airbending. Katara kept trying to keep her hopes from rising sky high. It was a very Aang thing to do, she told herself, to suggest a picnic on a beautiful day and then pop the question... But then again, wanting to go on a picnic just to go on a picnic was also very Aang. This wasn't the first time she'd suspected him to propose. Over the last several weeks, there had been some moments that had made her hold her breath in terrified anticipation. They hadn't been anything, obviously, and Katara had felt more and more stupid after each moment deflated, furious at herself for overthinking to the point of anxiety.

And yet, when Aang reappeared, a slightly sheepish grin on his lips, Katara was rendered incapable of thinking at all. She smiled back up at him happily, trying to look like a person that was easy to propose to.

Apparently, it didn't work. So Katara resolved to just relax and enjoy herself; lighten up a little. She held Aang's hand as they talked, looking back up at the clouds. Katara tried her hardest to ignore anything that would support her theory, like the way he mostly stayed uncharacteristically quiet, how he kept sliding his hand over his pocket nervously, how he seemed to be waiting for something...

"Katara?" He blurted. Was it just the light, or did he really look a couple shades paler than usual?

"Mm hmm?"

He helped her to her feet. "Um, do you want to go for a walk?"

"Ok." Katara shrugged one shoulder like she didn't care either way, even though her palms were growing clammy and her heart beat was picking up speed.

They started down the hill on the opposite side of where they had landed Appa. It was a welcome change of scenery; the sunlight was shining through the leaves on the trees, dappling the ground in gold and leaving deep shadows in their wake.

Aang stopped suddenly under a particularly shady tree and turned towards her. Katara froze. He was looking at her just like she had imagined he would. "Katara?" he asked barely above a whisper. They were standing so close. His breath sent shivers down her spine.

"Yes?" She matched his tone.

"I've loved you for as long as I've known you," Katara's heart stopped. "and I can't even begin to imagine my life without you in it. So there's something I've been wanting to ask you." He paused, letting the weight of his words drizzle down into the moment. Aang reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, square box. Opening it, he lifted out a betrothal necklace. The pendent was somewhat clumsily done, but Katara couldn't have cared less.  She was about to burst from anticipation. "Will you be my forever girl and m-marry me?" he finished nervously.

Tears seared Katara's eyes. Waves of relief were nearly knocking her off her feet. "Yes. Of course yes."

"Yes?" Aang echoed, looking hilariously bewildered.

"Yes." Katara smiled as she wiped away the one tear that had spilled out onto her cheek.

She reached to take off her mother's necklace that she was wearing to replace it with the new one. Aang watched her with a twitch of hesitancy. He knew how much she treasured that necklace. She gave him an encouraging smile and lifted up her hair with her mother's necklace still clutched in her hand.

Aang circled around behind her and fastened the new necklace around her neck. Once he stepped away, they just stood there grinning at each other for a moment. Then, all at once, they both fell into each other's arms in a huge hug. Katara felt like a queen.

They broke apart and just looked at each other, like they were afraid that they would be be dragged out of this glorious elation and wake up alone somewhere far away. But it wasn't a dream. Thank goodness.

A laugh bubbled up in Katara's stomach as she looked at her fiancee. "So I'm your forever girl?"

Aang blushed and grinned sheepishly. There seemed to be a story there. "I don't know where that came from, sorry."

Katara grinned back. "No! I love it. It is forever now, isn't it?"

Aang's expression could only be described as the look one gets when he just got something he'd been waiting for his entire life. "It is."

Katara smiled softly. There was a pause before she poked his forearm. "I'll race you back, soon-to-be-husband!"

That shook Aang awake. "Only if you like the taste of defeat, soon-to-be-wife!"

They took off running towards the hill and pretty soon the sound of Katara's cries of fury against cheating rang in the light breeze.

Spirits, Katara loved him.
