Chapter 13: Hope's Mistake

Sheik's POV

I don't know what to do. It's like all my medical training has just disappeared.

Do I roll her onto her side? No, that's for shock.

Do I elevate her feet? No, that's for heart attacks.

I don't know anymore. Karma fell over, unconscious and paralyzed. I pull her colder body to mine, and sprint back to the village. Clearing the fifty feet across the river, I take little time to recover and run through the bush.

"Somebody! Help me!" I scream, as I run in through the southern gates.

"Hurry! She's dying! Help!" I yell, and one of the workers runs over.

He's one of the doctors in our village. Like I've said before, they take the odd jobs. I hand her off to him, and run to the elder's tent.

"She was bit by a rattlesnake, I think. I don't know how long ago. She lost consciousness a few minutes ago," I try to relay the necessary information.

"Okay. Wait here, Sheik," he says, and runs into the tent.

I hear talking, but it seems to be slow and incoherent. My heart is in my throat, and I can't stop pacing. Time slows down. My feet take me where they want, and time comes to a stop around me. Soon, I just decide to sit down next to the flap of the tent, and bounce my knee.

I try to preoccupy myself with other thoughts, but it doesn't go over well.

What I do know is that rattlesnake venom travels very fast through the bloodstream, and targets the main organs. It'll leave permanent damage, even if she survives.

That thought launches me into a new fear. If? No, she will survive. Not 'if' she survives. Karma will survive.

Half of her arm, a little past her elbow had turned black. Karma's shallow breathing made mine quicken. Her slowing heartbeat made mine race. Her purple eyes lost all their bright pallor, and they looked hollow.

Dead, even.

After sitting there for an hour, someone comes out and I stand up anxiously.

"After ten minutes of repeated medical attention," he starts. It's only been ten minutes? "She hasn't given us many signs. We've removed any clothing restricting her breathing or that has any potential of choking her, along with other unnecessary gear."

I nod, and purse my lips, waiting for him to continue.

"I'm sorry, Sheik, but the chances aren't good. Maybe 50/50, at best. You might want to prepare yourself," he says. My whole spirit sinks.

He holds out his hand, and motions for me to put mine under his. I do, and he drops something small and smooth into it.

I look at it, and it's her mirror. It has a crack running down the side, and I close my hand around it. She told me her mother gave it to her, so I'll have to take good care of it. Just this mirror makes my spirit fall more. This just might be my last piece of her.

I continue to stand outside the tent for hours, waiting for news of any kind. But it doesn't come. Nothing happens. The world seems to slow down, and people walk by me at half speed. The sun slowly begins to set, and the sky goes from blue to orange, and then to a foreboding grey as the clouds start to come in. It rains, and everyone goes inside. I stay out, and the rain mercilessly pelts me.

I don't know when I started caring for her so much. When she first hugged me, my heart seemed to skip a beat. When she took off her bandana, she was the most beautiful girl that I've ever seen. I don't know why she hides it.

When the sky has turned black, and you can't even see your hand in front of your face, I get up. The lightning flashes and leads me to my house, dimly lit by the crackling coals that haven't been fed since last night.

I get some wood from the small stand next to the fireplace, and toss them in. My hands runs through my hair, and I sit on the bed. When I look over at it, I see her laying under the sheets, her eyes closed and a pleasant smile on her face.

I blink, and she's gone. Instead, I look at the table where we have breakfast. Karma sits there, wrapped in her blankets, waiting for a meal. I put my head down, and close my eyes. They begin to prick a little, and get fuzzy.

I pass it off as stress, and lay down in the bed. The soft smell of vanilla, of her, lingers in the sheets, and it's too much to ignore. After tossing and turning, I move to the couch, and leave her mirror on the small end table next to me.

When I look back at the mirror, I think of her. So I pick it up, and feel the smooth surface of the polished mirror. I turn it to face me, I see her smiling face looking at me, with tears streaking down her fair cheeks.

The image cuts out, and I see my face, with tears streaking down it. I can't be crying. I almost never cry. Brushing them away, I set the mirror back down. My eyes close, and sleep starts to crawl in.

I've been alone all my life, but I don't think I've ever felt so abandoned.

When I wake up next morning, I feel like I've never slept. Not only that, but something woke me up. What woke me up? A faint buzzing travels through the air, and I look around.

It isn't a fly or a bee. The buzzing continues in the background. I rub my eyes and look around, and then see Karma's mirror. It shake and rattles.

It's the one making the buzzing noise.

Confused, I pick it up. It continues to buzz, and getting slightly frustrated, I poke it.

It ripples like water, and my eyes widen. When it clears, a girl with blonde hair appears. But she's looking somewheres else, like she's hiding me from people around her.

"Karma!" She whispers. I open my mouth to object, but she hasn't even noticed me yet. What is this?

"Hey, I haven't checked with you for a few days. Sorry that I'm whispering and everything, but I'm in a hurry. If I don't hurry, I'll get caught," she whispers.

Who is this girl, and what relation does she have to Karma?

"Karma, are you ready?" She asks, still oblivious to my presence.

Before I stop myself, I ask, "Ready for what?"

She doesn't even notice that it isn't Karma, and keeps talking and looking away.

"Ready for the attack! Ganon moved the date, it's tomorrow now. Luck is ready, and the Skull Kids are all ready. I don't want to, personally, but I wanted your opinion. Are you ready to attack?" She rushes again.

My heart starts pumping a bit. Attack what? Us? That's ridiculous, Karma's village was destroyed and she was injured when she came here.

"What attack?" I question, and she still seems distracted.

"Kill the Sheikah, silly! Are you going to kill them?" My breathing halts, and anger builds up inside me. Karma couldn't have planned for this to happen! She was injured!

"Excuse me?!" I bellow, and the girl finally looks at me with her blue eyes. They widen, and she looks guilty immediately.

"Oops," she says, and her image disappears.

"Who are you? What attack?" I yell at the mirror, but nothing happens.

Karma... She couldn't have done this. That conniving, two-faced girl! She planned for this to happen! She works for Ganon! Fury blinds me, and I get off the couch, and slam open the door.

Karma better explain this to me now. She planned to kill us.

I run through town, my anger pulsating from my body. How could she do this? I thought that maybe we could stay together, and... No. That's no longer an option. She wanted to kill me from the very start.

I finally get to the large medical tent, but the doctor is standing outside. Opening the flap, I prepare to run in, but the doctor grabs me.

"Sheik, you can't go in there! Karma just woke up!" He exclaims, pushing me, but I wrench his grip off me and rip open the door against his protests.

Karma's violet eyes hover to me, and she smiles.

"Sheik..." She whispers, and my temper flares up. She thinks she's so innocent, done nothing wrong.

"How long were you planning on keeping up that act?!" I yell. Her eyes widen.

"What act?" She mumbles.

I walk up to the end of her bed. "You were going to kill us!"

Her small hand fly to her mouth, and she shakes her head. "No..." She mumbles.

When I look, I notice something I haven't seen before. Her right arm has been severed, cut off at the elbow. She no longer has half of her arm, or her hand.

Serves her right.

"You planned to come here! You're working for Ganon!" I shout. Her eyes start to water.

"No, I wasn't going to go through with it! I wasn't going to do it!" She protests.

"Then explain this!" I yell, and hold up the mirror. Her hand drops, and she mouths a silent 'no.'

"I was told everything. You came here just to kill us. I can't believe I fell for it..." I laugh cruelly. "You traitor!"

"No! I'm not!" She cries, and tries to reach my hands, but I step back. "You are my family! I don't want to--"

"We are not your family. You betrayed us!" I scream, and raise my hand.

I whip it down, and the mirror flies towards the floor. It shatters into a million pieces, and my breaths heave. One shard flies past Karma's cheek, making a small hairline cut across it.

"No!" She screams, and tears pour down her face. She holds out her hands to the mirror, and collapses back in her bed, tears continuing to stream down her face.

I glare at her with all the malice and hatred I can muster, and turn away. Her cries echo, and I run out of the tent.
