Chapter 9: School
Kousei's POV
"C'MON KOUSEI!!!" Kaori said. "YOU CAN DO IT!!!"
"Shut up!!" I shouted back.
I was pumping air into the wheels of my cycle, so that the both of us can go to school. I don't know why she's going but I'm happy she is.
"You will have a lot of notes to complete, right?" she asked.
"Yep," I said.
"I'll help you," she said. "You don't have to worry."
I stopped pumping air and I exhaled. I took the air pump back inside, I took my bag and when I came out, I saw Kaori kneeling down, petting a black cat with bright blue eyes which was lying on the floor on the head.
I went over and kneeled down beside her, watching her pet the cat. I started petting it too and I stopped quickly when our hands brushed each other. She gave me bright smile and she stood up. I stood up and sat on my cycle. My pulse increased when she sat behind me. She was holding my bag for me and I began to pedal.
"Is Watari going to a normal high school or a sports high school?" Kaori asked.
I bit the inside of my cheek. "I don't know. I think he's going to a normal one," I replied.
"Ok," she said.
There was silence between us and I didn't break it because there were people around us.
"Do you want me to shut up or talk?" she asked. "I'm asking because people might think you're crazy, that's why."
"Talk," I said. I can't waste my time with her by thinking about my reputation.
"Ok," she said, happily. "Hey, do you know the song 'hikaru nara'?"
[Note:- The song mentioned here is the first intro song of the Your Lie in April series]
"Of course," I said. "I listen to it everyday."
"Yeah, I tried playing it when I was in the hospital and it ended up horribly and I didn't like the way it turned out."
"Why not?"
"I prefer playing classical music more than modern pop songs," she said.
"Me too," I said, chuckling. "I don't listen to those kind of songs but Hikaru Nara is an exception."
"I listen to pop songs but I like classical more," she said. "My second favourite type of music is anime songs."
"I read mangas but I don't watch animes," I said.
"WHAT?!" she shouted.
My balance became uneven for a second but I somehow manage to get back.
"I'll make you watch one anime for sure," she said, patting my back. "What type of animes do you like? I'm asking the genres."
"I don't wanna watch one," I said.
"Then, what about an anime movie?" she asked.
This is girl is not gonna give up is she? I smiled to myself and said, "Alright then."
"YAY!!" she cheered. "I'll think of one."
Wait! What have I done?! My thought went to us watching a movie. What if she wants to watch a horror movie and she's scared of them?! I'll just humiliate myself if she finds out I'm scared of horror movies. Or what if she wants to watch a romance movie?! That'll be way worse!! "If only Watari and I were together like that." What if she says things like that during the movie?! This is going to be a disaster!!
"Hey, why are you so quiet?" Kaori asked me. She gasped and then punched my back.
"WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!" I shouted in pain.
"I know you were think something perverted about me!!" she shouted.
"I WAS NOT!" I shouted back.
People began staring at me and giving me weird glances for shouting.
Kaori laughed. "I'm sorry," she said.
"You should be," I mumbled.
We reached inside the school and we got down from the cycle.
"Have a nice day," she said, giving me my bag, smiling.
I smiled back. "You too," I said.
"Of course I'll have a good day. I'm invisible!" she said, her smile not leaving her face.
"KOUSEI!" Watari shouted, running towards us, smiling. He ran to me and hugged me tightly. "You came!! You finally came!!!"
"Uh... you can let go now," I said, smiling. Kaori was just looking at us with a small smile. I feel kinda bad for her.
"You have no idea how boring it was weren't there," Watari said.
"Really?" I asked, not actually believing him.
"Really," he said, smiling brightly.
"I'm gonna go now," Kaori said, before turning and walking away. I gave her a nod and I went to class with Watari. I hope she'll be ok.

Class was as boring as usual and I had no idea what the teachers were saying because I'm lagging on notes. The teacher told me to take someone's book home to complete it but who would give me when exams are coming soon?
During lunch break, I went to the music class and I saw Kaori sitting on the piano bench, eating a bun.
"So, how was your day?" I asked, closing the door.
"I regret coming here," she said, frowning.
I laughed. "Lemme guess, you just roamed around the school, didn't you?
"Nah, I was playing the piano," she said, smiling proudly. "And I should say, I didn't make any progress."
"Did you even know which key was which?" I asked.
"I only know that," she said. "I've learned the piano for a few months when I was a kid. You'd know if you've read the letter."
"Anyways, what did you try to play," I asked, walking over to her.
"Our song!!" she said, happily.
My face started to burn up and my eyes widened. "W-What do you mean?" I asked, nervously.
"Check it," she said, swallowing the remaining piece of the bun as a whole and turning towards the piano.
She was only using her index finger and she was looking at them in complete concentration. I smiled when I realized which song she was playing and I felt a warmth inside me when she said that it was our song. But her attempt reminds me of a little kid, learning how to play the piano for the first time.
I applauded when she finished playing and she stood up and bowed.
"Now, play it faster," I said.
"Hey!! I'm the one who's supposed to make you play, not you!!" she said, sitting back on the bench.
I came over and played the same thing but faster. She just watched, pouting.
"Don't show off. I bet you don't know the first thing about playing the violin," she said, angrily.
"I never tried it," I said.
She stood up, placed her hands on her hips, smiling at me. "Then I'll make you play it, first thing we get home," she said.
"Um.... Can I practice now?" I asked.
"You better!" she said.

I took a really small break to read the music once and while I was reading...
"Kousei," Kaori called.
"What is it?" I said, looking at her, who was sitting on floor.
"Did you get any prize when we played together during the competition?" she asked.
"No," I said. "Wait, we didn't play together for a competition."
"Yes, we did," she said. "Ya know, when I was going through surgery."
"You weren't there."
"I was. I remember it so well. I remember how I came where you were playing. It was like a beautiful blue place. I was wearing my white dress and I had my violin. Then I found out which song you were playing and then I played along. Don't you remember?"
She had a sad tone when she said the last sentence. "Yeah, I do," I said. "I thought it was my imagination."
"But it was a magical moment, wasn't it?" she asked, excitedly. I smiled and gave a nod. "I also remember feeling pain all over my body and then... I don't remember but then I somehow reached your house." She paused for a second. "You were... crying, weren't you?"
I looked away from her. "Yes."
She sighed. "Its hard to believe a lot of tears were wasted for me," she said.
"How can you say that?!" I asked, angrily.
"Say what?" she asked.
I looked away from her, trying my best not to cause any kind of dramatic scenes. How can tears be wasted on someone who has done a lot for everyone?
I felt a finger poking me cheek. I turned to my side and saw Kaori, smiling at me.
"Are you mad at me, Kousei?" she asked, playfully.
"How can I?" I said.
She began poking my cheek again and again. "I'm sowwy," she said, trying to sound like a kid.
I smiled and she smiled back at me. How can a girl be this beautiful? She's like an angel. An angel who beats me up all the time. An angel who doesn't care about what the others think. An angel who who can stay happy even in the worst situations. An angel who I've fallen deeply in love with.
Her beautiful dark eyes were looking at mine and I could stare at them for hours. Her smile can make my day. Her laugh was like music. She couldn't be more perfect.
I came back to my senses and I looked back at my file, blushing madly.
I looked at my watch and said,"I think class is about to start."
"Go then," she said.
I stood up, gave her my file and left sadly to my class.
After class...
"Kousei!!" Someone called out.
I turned and saw Kaori, waving at me from afar while running to me.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and quickly, moved aside in shock that I was about to drop my cycle.
"Yo," Watari said. Tsubaki was standing beside him, looking angrily at the floor.
"Hey guys," I said, smiling.
"Wanna walk home together?" he asked.
"Sure," I said.
I turned to look at Kaori, who was now panting heavily for air.
"Ya... I'm good," she said.
"Alright, let's go!" Watari said, cheerfully as we began walking.
"We were planning on visiting Kaori today," Tsubaki said.
"Yay! I'm visiting my own gravestone!!!" she said, laughing.
I laughed a little along with her because her enthusiasm was amusing. Watari and Tsubaki stopped walking and looked at me in confusion.
"Why were you laughing when we mentioned Kao-chan?" Tsubaki asked me, angrily.
It was at this moment, we knew we messed up.
"I wasn't laughing at her," I said, panicking.
"Yes, you were, Kousei," Watari said. His eyes showed worry and sadness. "Did something happen to you?"
"What? No," I said.
"Then why are you acting all creepy?!!" Tsubaki asked, shouting at me.
"I'm sorry," Kaori said, sadly in a voice as low as a whisper. I kept my silence between us to avoid this conversation to go any further.
"You still haven't gotten over her, didn't you?" Watari asked.
I looked down to avoid any eye contact with them.
"I have," I muttered.
"Tell us the truth. We deserve to know."
I still remained quiet, looked over to Kaori and eyed her to get on the cycle. She gave me a nod and got on the cycle with me.
"Wait, what are you-" Watari said, seeing me get on my cycle.
"DON'T YOU DARE!!" Tsubaki said, angrily.
"Bye," I said, beginning to pedal as fast as possible.
Kaori was laughing her heart out, my heart started to beat faster and smiled to myself.
"Did you see their faces?" she asked, laughing. "They were priceless."
I realized something and I quickly grabbed the brake. The sudden break made the cycle to jerk a bit.
"What's the matter with you?! Why would you stop like that?!" Kaori shouted, punching my back.
It wasn't that painful or anything. But I felt face burning up a bit too much as I thought about what happened. OH MA GOD!!!!!! I SHOULDN'T HAVE PEDDLED TOO FAST!! SH-SHE WAS HOLDING M-M-MY WAIST!!!! My heart began doing backflips and cartwheels.
"Kousei?" Kaori said, standing in front of me.
"Y-Yeah?" I stammered.
"Can you get out of the cycle?" she said.
My heart's backflips stopped completely. "Yeah, ok," I said. I used the cycle stand to hold the cycle in place and walked to her.
She looked at me and smiled but then it faded into an angry look and she kicked me on my knee. I began to shout in pain.
"WHY DO THINK PERVERTED THINGS ALL THE TIME?!" she whined.
"I wasn't!!" I said, rubbing my knee.
"Why else would you stop cycling?" she said. "I'm sorry but a girl has to react when things like this happen."
"I understand," I said, trying my best to hold the pain.
"Can we go somewhere? I don't wanna go back yet."
"Yeah, me too."
