Chapter 7: Rules
Kousei's POV
I went to my room after telling her that she could use my parents' room. It became really awkward between us and all she did was glare at me. It was really scary, coming from her and as the great relatable quote goes, 'Once you see it, you can't un-see it.' So that was really embarrassing and lucky, because of that she didn't hear the compliment I gave her.
I read a manga to pass time and minutes later, I heard a knock on the door and saw a note on the floor. I took it and it said, 'Can u come to the living room, pls.' I smiled at the note and started walking downstairs. I saw her sitting in the living room, dressed in a normal t-shirt and pants, her wet hair left opened and she was fidgeting with her fingers.
I went and sat across her. She just closed her eyes, folded her hands and faced somewhere else.
"Don't you have anything to say?" she asked, angrily.
"No, why?" I said, confused.
She looked at me. "Apologise, doofus!!" she shouted.
"For what?"
"You saw one of my personal stuff, so apologise," she said.
"I'm sorry," I said.
"Ok," she said, smiling. "I've made a set of rules so that we can stay in the house peacefully."
"What do you mean?" I asked, suspecting something.
"You'll understand," she said. "Rule number one - we shouldn't come to each other's rooms except in case of emergencies."
I nodded, agreeing to her rule. "What if you wanna say something?" I asked.
"Slip in a note," she said. "Rule number two - You should only use one bathroom throughout my stay."
"What?" I asked, confused.
"You should only bath and all in your bathroom while I use the one attached to the bedroom you gave me." I gave her a nod. "Ok moving on, rule number three - since this is your house, you must treat your guest," she said, smiling brightly at me.
"WHAT?!" I shouted. "I'M NEVER GONNA TREAT YOU WITH ANYTHING!"
"Hey, I gave you piano lessons, remember?" she said. "This is how you have to pay."
"I became your accompanist, remember?!" I said.
"I made you start playing again, remember?!"
"I treated you twice, remember?!"
"You didn't treat me! You were my replacement for Watari!"
"But it still counts anyways!"
"Nope, it doesn't."
"Yes, it does."
"Well, you tore my letter, remember?!"
"I....," I looked down sadly and averted my gaze from her. "Fine, I'll treat you."
"Good boy," she said, happily. "Rule number four - we do our own laundry." I started to blush. She just had to mention that, didn't she? I nodded. "Rule number five - you have to start going to school," she said, angrily.
"I don't wanna," I protested.
"YOU MUST!!" she shouted.
"I was just...," I paused while talking. "I don't want our old memories coming to me. It'll make me regret somethings." My head hung down sadly, ashamed of confessing my reason for not going to school.
She stood up from her seat and sat next to me. She raised my chin with her hand to meet her gaze and she gave a smile. "I told you not to look down, didn't I?" she said. I felt tears filling my eyes. I remained quiet and just looked at her sadly. She lowered her hand from my chin. "I know, some memories are better forgotten but in the future it'll bring a smile to your face. But now, you just have to remember what we had before. The memories we had were good ones and they'll make you smile, I sure of it."
Tears started falling out of my eyes. "But...," I said, my voice cracking with my sobs.
She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me into a hug. I cried my heart out as I hugged her back. I felt sad at the thought of us practicing in the music room, going to the café after school as Watari's replacement, her talking to me about the things that happened to her at home and all the conversations we had. I wanted to tell her a lot of things back when she was alive not the Kaori who's now with me. I wanted to do a lot of things with her, make more memories with her. I sure just before her surgery, she might've thought of the things she regretted, the things she couldn't do, the things she did, the things she had and mostly the things she loved.
"Don't cry," she said, softly, patting my back. "I'm here now, aren't I? We can do a lot of things and make more memories, okay?"
I nodded, wiping my tears. She was about to break the hug, but I held her closer, not letting her. I don't want her to see me like this.
I let her go after a while and the first thing I did was cover my face. She pulled my hands away from my face and then I saw her, really close to me, her face inches away from mine. She smiled at me and my heart started to do backflips.
"There's no need to cover your face," she said. "I know you cried not because you're weak, but because you've been strong for too long so, don't be ashamed that you cried. Wear your tears in pride, showing your pain is better than hiding it."
I took her hands in mine. "Thank you for everything," I said, forcing a smile.
"Go wash your face," she said, still smiling at me.
I stood and started walking towards the bathroom. On the way,
"REMEMBER RULE NUMBER TWO!!!" Kaori shouted. I laughed and went to the bathroom in my room. I washed my face with cold water and I cleaned my glasses with the hem of my shirt.
My eyes went wide and my jaw dropped at the thought of what happened. DID SHE ACTUALLY HUG ME??!! My face became as red as a tomato and my heartbeats became faster. I smiled to myself and went back downstairs. I saw her lying on the couch, covering her face.
"Hey, weren't you the one who told me not to cover my face?" I said.
"YOU BAKA KOUSEI!!!!" she shouted, looking at me angrily.
"What?" I asked.
She sat up straight and she looked at me, sadly. "I'm no longer pure anymore!!" she cried out, sadly.
"WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?! IT WAS JUST A HUG!!"
"WHY DID YOU HUG ME THEN, KOUSEI?!"
"YOU WERE THE ONE WHO HUGGED ME, I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!"
She paused. Her face became red. "I wanted to do everything in this world, but not 'boy hugging' everything," she said.
"Sorry?" I said, hesitantly.
"Nah. It's my mistake," she said. There was a moment of awkward silence in the room and none of us broke it. But someone has to. "Rule number six!" she said, showing all her fingers on her hand and a finger on the other. "I'll be taking piano classes every evening."
"WHAT?!" I shouted. "Can't I do it myself?"
"I don't trust you enough," she said. "Rule number seven - I'll playing my violin whenever I want."
"Fine."
"And...," she thought for a while, her finger resting on her chin. "You got any rules?"
"Uh..." I started thinking too. I never really lived with a girl before so I don't know what are the things that could happen or go wrong.
"Did you get one?" she asked after a while.
"Yes," I said.
"What is it?" she asked.
"You've to tell a sentence of the letter you wrote each time I treat you," I replied, smirking.
