Tips for writing Poetry
Having read all the necessary information regarding poetry in this book, we're finally going to look at some interesting ways of writing poetry! =)
1) Dive into your feelings
You can't write poetry if you don't feel it. Know your feelings first.
What is it that has touched you? Or what topic touches your heart in any way? What makes you passionate? Let the feeling take hold of you. Let it capture you entirely until you feel like exploding if you don't take it out. At this point, where you have to take it out, pick up a pen and start writing about it. Whatever you write would eventually turn out to be amazingly poetic. You won't struggle. The words would just pour out of your fingers like water and even if it's prose that you manage to pull up, it'll oddly have tiny kisses of poetry all over it.
2) Read a lot of poetry
You can't write it until you've read it.
Writing prose is not what we're focusing on so what would make you write poetry when you're under the hold of passionate feelings? Reading poetry.
Read a poem every day. Then move on to reading two poems each day and so on. Keep in contact with poetry. Absorb it. Notice little things. This slight observation is something that'll help you implement it while holding a pen.
3) Search a good writing time
We all have different lives and consequently, different moments of relaxation. Some find mornings creative while some hit magic in the middle of the night. It's all about preferences. Decide for yourself. Find a nice moment of serenity for writing amidst the hustle bustle of daily chores. Make it a habit even if it's just for fifteen minutes. If you want to start writing poetry then start plucking the flowers of convenience in the garden of your 24 hour cycle.
4) Cherish the ordinary
Nothing is special until you think that it's special.
Don't expect too much and don't be too hard on yourself. Poetry is an art that demands patience. Start admiring the ordinary and simple things around and within. Don't judge yourself and just let the words flow out. Put no barrier of any kind between your thoughts and the paper. You'll have a huge wallpaper filled with rejection notes and insecurities but don't give up. It'll come out right one day. =)
5) Try writing different types of poetry
Tasting different domains of the poetic universe would help you find your home. ❤
What I mean by this complex sentence is that...here, let me give you an example. Imagine our planet Earth as the world of Poetry and all the countries and places over it as different types of poetry. Now, if you go on visiting different countries (trying different types of Poetry i.e Haiku, Tanka, Limerick etc.), you'll find your home one day (the type of poetry that suits you best). However, some of you would have the streak of wanderlust in your blood and it'll be fun for you to keep roaming around the world (experimenting with all the types of poetry now and then). It all depends on you.
The main reason behind this experimentation is trying your hand at poetry and letting your hesitation wear off. You'll find it difficult at first but it'll turn out to be amusing eventually. Just don't give up.
6) Relax if you get stuck
Don't force poetry because it's nothing to be forced.
You can't force it out. Ever. It comes to you. Wait for it. Don't rush. If you're stuck but are in a good reading mood, check out some good poetry. However, if you're not up for reading, look out of the window. What's that at the end of the road? A bicycle? Is it a bicycle really? What's it doing there all by itself? It might belong to someone. Where's this someone? Is he nearby? Or is it a she? Play around in your mind. Make stories. Be imaginative.
And if you're not up for using your mind at all, go and take a bath. Eat a cookie. Smile by yourself. Trust me, it's not foolish. =) Just the simple act of smiling relaxes you. Just don't return to writing poetry until you feel like it.
But if you don't feel like it for more than 3 days, read poetry. Start the cycle once again. Try writing a little Haiku to get it working. Once you've gotten hold of it, return back to your original project.
7) Use everything that you know
Don't hold back. Express everything in every possible way.
Don't be afraid to be yourself because poetry is something that has its roots in the middle of your heart. Don't lie to yourself. Write every kind of poetry to have a taste of its diversity. Never limit yourself thematically or structurally. Write on any topic that you like and express it in any way you want (try your hand at all types of poetry at least once).
8) Let your poetry be open to interpretation
Never limit your poetry to one idea once you've written it.
You live in a world full of so many different people and that's the beauty of it. You might have written a poem with a certain perspective but a reader might interpret it in an entirely different way. Don't tell them that they're wrong. Enjoy the rainbow of perceptions pouring out of your poetry. Be happy at this miracle. ❤
9) Read your poetry out loud
This seems a bit strange but poetry is kind of related to music or lyrics. Reading it out loud would give you an idea if it has a rhythm or you need to touch some syllables here or there. Let your ears take it all in and decide if it sounds good or if it lacks something? Maybe a ring to it? An echo? Or maybe it needs more euphony? Experiment. Read it in front of the mirror. Do you feel good? If you do, well, you're done with your piece. Worry no more, my friend. =)
10) Join poetry clubs or surround yourself with poetic company
Company has a marvellous influence on oneself.
If you want to adopt something, adopt the company of people acquainted with that thing. Same goes for poetry. Join some poetry clubs on reading sites. Follow some good poets on different social sites. Make friends with people who love or write poetry. Participate in different poetry contests and don't care about winning. You'll be amazed with the results it'll have on your ability to write poetry!

Author's personal note
I'm Hazel lullabells and I'm the Poetry Lead at Coffee Community. I write this note to share a story of inspiration with you all. This story is of none but my own self. I hope this will motivate you to never give up on poetry. =)
I've been a poetess since a very young age. It flows in my veins. However, a few years ago, I hit a poetic block for two whole years of my life. I couldn't write poetry. No matter how much I wanted to. It was depressing. But I made a huge mistake that prolonged my poetic block. I believed in it. I let myself believe that I couldn't write poetry anymore and I didn't even try writing it once. However, with the passage of time, I started reading poetry. A lot of it. I made friends with people who loved poetry. They motivated me to give it a try once again and after two long years of pain, I finally gave it a go and that too in English which is not my first language (I used to do poetry in my first language before my poetic block). It was overwhelming for me to experience the caress of poetry once again and I actually wrote five poems the very first day. I couldn't stop smiling. Today, I've written more than 140 poems, my book has more than 40K reads and I'll always cherish one thing that I gave it a go.
I have written this article in the light of my own experience and I'll stress on one point above all. Never give up on poetry. My story is evident of its fruitful results. Thanks! ❤
