Chapter 3: The Arrival

The next day, the League was bringing in Kaldur's mother. Kaldur stood in the back and sent the League the coldest of glares. Even when Aquaman tried to talk to him, Kaldur said nothing. It was like Kaldur was not completely there. Wally 'causally' looked behind Kaldur's back and still his fingers played some what of a song with his fingers on his wrist. When the zeta beam introduce Batman, Superman, Black Canary and including her guest, Kaldur postured instantly straightened up. It was like he was trying to make himself taller. Kaldur mother looked almost exactly like him. Her hair color, blank facial expression, including their eye color were similar. The one difference was that Shalina had a sort of eel tattoo on her cheek and down to her shoulder and back. Batman took off the hand cuff as Connor heard Kaldur's breathing begin to change slightly.

"Shalina, you are only to remain here, until the Eclipse is over. By remaining here, you are free of all charge that you have been accused of in Atlantis. Is that clear?" Aquaman said firmly.

"Yes your majesty." Shalina said instantly with a curtsy.

The League left the cave, leaving behinding an awkward silence. Shalina looked at her son in amazement and yet disappoint.

"Hello Kaldur. It is good to see you my son." Shalina said as she slowly walked to him.

"Wow, you actually acknowledge me as your son." Kaldur said sarcastically.

"You have always been a son to me." Shalina said in 'shock'.

"Was that before or after Manta tried to kill me?" Kaldur asked with a glare.

"What your father did was of his own bidding. I had nothing to do with that." Shalina lied bluntly.

"Miss Martian will show you to your room." Kaldur said as he walked away.

Miss Martian walked Shalina to her room and watch her go in. Shalina sat on the bed as crocodile tears swell her grey eyes.

"I was a good mother. I did the best I could but I still seem to fail. I only wanted what was best for him. You must understand that." Shalina said with a sniffle.

All Megan did was smile sadly to her before closing the door. She found Kaldur at the pool surrounded by the rest of the team.

"Connor repeated what she said." Robin explained as he motion to Kaldur.

"A good mother? She leaves me to die in a hospital room, alone, and she has the nerve to call herself a good mother." Kaldur said angrily.

"Kaldur, what happened between the two of you? Every Time the word mother or mom is even mentioned, you walk away. Tell us." Wally asked curiously.

Kaldur sat there not saying a word. This has been eating at him for years. Mera always said that talking about it would help him cope and live healthy mental and spiritual life.

"My 'parents' wanted me to join the military the second I turned 10. They did not want me to join for a sense of duty and honor, they wanted me to join so I could become a spy for the Manta's own plans. They wanted me to become this emotionless monster that would soon turn me into a killer. I did not have that anger in my heart. My 'father' would beat me until I was half dead. He swore that I would be the start of his army whether I like it or not. My 'mother' didn't stop him. If anything she joined him by harming my mentally. I went to school but I could not have told anyone of the abuse. He was the pillar of the community. Who was going to believe me?" Kaldur began as tears fell down his cheeks.

"You were only a child so you could not stop it." Artemis said systematically.

"Yes." Kaldur said fighting the sobs that form in his throat. "It was bad enough that I was tormented during my studies then I had to go home to it as well. I was so tired and broken and I gave up on everything I could not take it anymore." Kaldur said as his whole body tremble.

"You took that anger out on himself, didn't you?" Wally asked in a low tone, already knowing the answer.

"I would cut my wrist with a kitchen knife. I lost control of everything in my life. I almost lost my humanity and sanity. When I held that knife in my hand, I had control of that object and how it harmed me. The Manta one day came into my room and tried to kill me. I always kept the knife in my room in case the demons my dreams came in the night. I fought him off as best as any 6 year old could and - I went out the window. Some how my mother found me and ordered me to go back home and said, and I quote "Go back home and face your punishment like a man". Who says that to a 6 year old child who is bleeding. I knew that she was going to allow him to kill me if I was to return. He tried to do it before." Kaldur explained as his voice started to crack and sobs escaped his mouth.

He clung to Connor tightly when he hugged him. He clung as tight as he could as he started to cry out of sadness and anger and pain. Connor just held him tightly as the rest of the team try to comfort him.

"So what happened?" Wally asked softly.

"I swam as fast as I could to the palace infirmary. It was the only place I could think of that was safe. Before I could even speak to the palace guards that found me, I passed out so they took me to the doctors. I fell into a coma for 3 days. My heart stopped twice while I was in that coma. When I finally woke up, I was Queen Mera at my bedside crying. When I asked her why she was crying she said- she said that, she felt like someone should be worried of me. I asked her why she was worried of me, she said I almost died and she wanted me to ask me why I even came to the palace for safety. I told her because I have always felt safe in her presences." Kaldur explained with a small smile at the thought of his relationship with his queen.

"She must really love you." Megan said as she started to smile at Kaldur's smile.

"And I love her. She never would have allowed me to leave. I remember when the guards came to escort me to the orphanage, she said "why would I send my child away to live with others'. She was sadly never able to have her own children so in a way I became her son." Kaldur explained as his smile became soft.

"So you have not seen your mother since you were 6 years old?" Artemis said.

"Yes. She never even came looking for me when Mera asked for her." Kaldur admitted as his smile faded.

"Kaldur, you need to talk to her." Robin said.

"Robin, this mission is as difficult as it is. Please, do not make me talk to her anymore than I already have. Do you know her charges that she is being dismissed of? Child endangerment, attempted trading of a minor, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and the list goes on and on. What would you do it you own mother left you to die because of something she allowed to happen and someone told you to protect her?" Kaldur explained as he look at Robin with a pleading look.

Robin sat there and turned his head.

"My parents were murdered. I would give anything to see my mother again. I do understand that you don't want to talk to her but you need to tell her your side of the story." Robin explained in a sad tone.

"I will try." Kaldur said regretfully.

He just looked at the water at his own reflection and for a split second, he saw himself as a child, his face covered in bruises and cuts. He turned his head and tried to think of the hundred way to stop thinking of killing her. After about fifteen minutes they got up and Megan started to bake cookies, in hope it would cheer Kaldur up. This is going to be a long week.
