.Chapter 33: design of darkness.
We make our way back into the banquet hall so that everyone can finish eating. We are given congrats on our way back to our table by everyone. I smile at Five as he pours me more champagne and clears my plate away, pulling me from my chair and setting me on his lap.
"I have a chair you know." I state, pretending to try to get off, only to feel him grab my waist and pull me back onto his lap.
"Yea, it's my lap." Five teases.
"You're never gonna let me go, are you?" I question, hoping he says no.
"No. Even if the world wasn't ending in about two days, I'd never let you leave me again." Five's voice gets softer as his sentence continues.
I kiss him on the cheek and go to kiss him on the lips when we're interrupted by someone clearing there throat.
"Cinco! Mi hermano. Mi hermana." Klaus says, sitting in my empty chair.
"Oh God. What do you want?" Five asks, not wanting to deal with his brother.
"Listen to me, Dad is upstairs right nowwith a plan to save everything." Klaus states. Me and Five look at each other, each of us rolling our eyes. "So what say you, me, and Mar pop upto the suite for a little chitchat?"
"Are you like Frick and Frackwith the old man now?" Five asks, pulling me closer to his chest, one hand on my back and rubbing up and down, while the other sits on my thigh and rubs circles.
"This dad's different. He's a turtle." Klaus says, causing me to furrow my eyebrows as to how my father, is a turtle. "Hard on the outside, but all cute and wrinkly and occasionally delicious on the inside."
"Klaus?" I state, though it sounds more like a question.
"Yeah?" Klaus asks.
"Old dogs like me and him never change." Five answers, pulling away from me a little bit. "He has never hadour best interests at heart. So, my only plan for tonight isto get fucked up beyond all recognition. And to spend whatever time I have left, with my new wife."
I blush, still not over the fact that we got married on a whim, and that it was my idea.
"Sure." Klaus nods, standing up. "Have at it."
"We shall!" Five answers, raising his glass to Klaus.
Klaus walks away from one of the newly weds and looks towards Diego. As he goes to walk over to him, he's stopped by Lila and Ben.
"Klaus, don't even think and filling his empty head with bad ideas." Lila threatens.
"Moi? How dare--" Klaus starts to feign indiffernce.
"You may be unkillable, but I'll find a way to make sure that your timeon this earthly plane is chock-full of pain and suffering." Lila states. "Got it?"
"Yeah. sure." Klaus murmurs.
"Great. Smile." Lila says, the three of them smiling at the camera that Chet is holding.
"Bye." Klaus grunts as Lila walks off, leaving Ben and Klaus.
"How long before we can leave?" Ben asks, having not wanted to be there in the first place. And now, wanting to leave even more now that both of his sisters have married into the Umbrella family.
"After the speeches." Klaus states.
"I don't think I can last that long." Ben comments. "Oh, also, have you seen Dad?"
Allison walks over to the two, holding a glass of some kind of hard alcohol. " Have a drink, Ben. Relax. For once in your pathetic life."
Klaus chuckles, walking away towards the other newly weds table, needing someone to agree with him that their father has changed. "Mazel tov to the Mr. and Mrs."
"Hey, brother." Luther says holding up his glass. "Cheers."
"Now, about Dad." Klaus starts, being stopped by Luther.
"No, no, no, no." Luther argues.
"No." Klaus grumbles
"The answer's no, Klaus." Luther states.
"Baby, he's a changed man." Klaus argues.
"No, the man is incapable of change." Luther grumbles.
"Lulu, he's different." Klaus tries. "He helped me conquer my childhood fears."
"Mm-hm?" Luther hums, not believing him.
"We played catch together." Klaus says, smiling.
"Wait. You played catch with Dad?" Luther asks, hurt flashing through his eyes for a millisecond before it went away.
"Yeah, we call it bus-ball,but that's kind of our thing. I mean, you could findyour own thing with him." Klaus says, hoping that he'll listen to him.
Luther groans, stopping Klaus from talking. "Would you stop?Listen, you're being duped."
"No, I'm not being duped." Klaus argues, a frown forming in his head.
"No, you are, you are." Luther argues back. "In fact worse."
"Come on!" Klaus complains.
"You're being enabled by your own father." Luther states.
"Yeah, but I really thinkif you just give him a little chance--" Klaus tries again.
"Klaus!" Luther yells, fed up with his brother.
"Babe, it's fine." Sloane whispers. " It's our wedding."
"You're right. I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Klaus apologizes.
"Yeah." Luther mutters.
"I'm sorry." Klaus says, his head bowed as he looks at the ground. Klaus groans, looking up again. "Okay, that's good."
"Listen, I'm just tryingto enjoy my wedding, okay?" Luther answers, trying to not upset his brother more. "And you should too."
"Yeah." Klaus whispers.
"Go have some salmon and a Jell-O cup." Luther suggests.
"That sounds nice." Klaus answers.
"All right?" Luther questions, waiting for him to turn around and walk away.
"All right. Well, screw it, I tried." Klaus mutters, turning around and walking away.
As Klaus sits back at his table, the elevator dings and opens up , revealing Reginald Hargreeves. All conversations stop as he walks in, heading for the buffet table and grabbing some food before going to sit by himself, at a table near the elevator.
"What the hell is he doing here?" Luther whispers, anger in his voice.
"Hey." Sloane whispers, trying to calm him down. "It's okay."
"It's not okay." Luther argues.
"Let's just try and be civil?" Sloane asks. "For me?"
"Okay." Luther nods, going back to his food as he tries to ignore the presence of the man that ruined his life.
"Okay." Sloane whispers.
As Reginald walks by all the tables, the kids all voice their own thoughts on their father being there.
"He better not sit here." Diego mutters to Lila. "Swear to god, he better not sit here."
"What is he doing here?" Ben asks quietly.
"Yeah, keep walking." Diego grumbles.
"But who invited him?" Ben questions.
"Just suffer with us." Allison comments.;
"I can't get invited to a party, and he's invited to this?" Ben complains.
"Wow. You really can't relax." Allison scoffs.
"Now we're all here." Klaus says, a small smile on his face.
"Ben? Chill." Allison whispers, downing her drink and going to get another one.
Everyone continues eating and talking. A few minutes later, Reginald stands up and walks up to the stage, catching the attention of everyone in the room.
" I know it is customary...for the father of the bride..." Reginald starts his speech.
"Brides!" Klaus yells. "Both your daughters got married."
Everyone looks over towards Marah and Five, seeing Marah with her face in Five's neck, as Five rubs her back and kisses the top of her head, a small smile on his face.
"Sloane, ever since you were a little girl, I've always knownyou were exceptionally bright. And though I can't sayI know Luther all that well, from the few moments we have shared, it seems you found yourself an adequate partner." Reginald says, looking at the older couple. He then turns to the younger couple, his daughters face out of Five's neck.
"Marah, you have always been the light in our lives. I've known that I would watch over and protect you from the first day you gripped my hand." Reginald starts. "As you grew, I realized just how much of this world you'd change. I just wish you were given the chance. Though I don't know Five all too well either, anyone who can make my daughter smile like it's christmas morning, is more than worthy to have her."
"I acknowledge that, as a father,I was not without my faults. I hope these shortcomings will be seen as only a rough patchon an otherwise verdant lawn." Reginald continues. "I'm proud to call you my children. Even those whom I raisedin a revenant version of myself. I hope that tonightwe can create a few special memories in whatever precious little timewe have left. And now, in closing...The sun risesover a lily's field. A mother veiled, her lips concealed. The mourners come in droves of black to bury what their hearts unpack. With shallow breathand time eclipsed, I pray you miss death's gentle kiss."
"Beautiful! Bravo, Dad! Bravo!" Klaus cheers, clapping for their father, causing everyone else to cheer and clap as well.
