Khushi ke liye

"Naina, beta ab kaisi tabiyat hai teri?" Bela asked affectionately.

She had come over with Anand next morning when Sameer told them about their visit to the hospital.

"Bilkul theek hun, chachiji. Zyada kuch nahi hua tha." Naina assured Bela.

Sameer gave her a wide eyed look, "Zyada nahi hua tha? Chachiji, iska chehra safed pad gaya tha, tez tez saans le rahi thi, dard ki wajah se khada bhi nahi hua jaa raha tha."

Naina glared at Sameer. He narrowed his eyes in confusion, wondering what was bothering her.

Bela was visibly worried as she looked back at Naina, "Woh toh achha hua Sameer ghar pe tha. Beta, agar yeh sab din ke time hua hota toh? Tu akeli hoti hai, agar kisi din doctor ke paas jaane ki zaroorat ho jaye toh kya karegi? Mujhe pata hai Sameer fauran wapas aa jayega office se lekin usme bhi aadha ghanta to lag hi jayega na."

Anand nodded, "Naina, iss waqt kisi bade ka paas hona zaroori hai. Tum aisa karo, hamare saath chalo. Wahan Bela har samay tumhare saath hogi toh humein bhi chinta nahi rahegi aur tumhe bhi aaram milega."

Sameer bit his lip. Now he understood why Naina was frowning at him. But he had again been stupid.

"Main akeli nahi hun, chachaji. Ramdhari saara din yahin rehta hai. Woh hamare ghar ka sadasya hai. Bohot dhyan rakhta hai mera. Jab Sameer yahan nahi hote toh har dus minute mein puchta hai mujhe. Aur aaj toh Sameer ne yeh alarm bhi lagwa diya hai... main yahin se switch on karungi toh kitchen mein bell baj jayegi aur Ramdhari fauran aa jayega." Naina explained eagerly, trying to convince them by pointing at the bell switch right next to the bed.

Bela was still perturbed, "Fir bhi, beta... usse kaunsa kuch pata hai. Kisi anubhavi ka saath alag baat hai. Tera pehla mauka hai... main nahi chahti tujhe koi takleef ho."

Sameer shifted his chair closer to the bed, holding Naina's hand, "Main Naina ko takleef nahi hone dunga, chachiji. Aaj se hi office jaana band kar deta hun. Main har pal Naina ke paas hi rahunga."

Anand shook his head, "Yeh sahi nahi hoga, Sameer. Kaam ko nazarandaaz nahi kar sakte. Tum dono ne itni mehnat se business ko aage badhaya hai, iss tarah beech mein chod dene se saari mehnat bekaar ho jayegi."

Sameer quickly reassured him, "Kaam ka nuksaan nahi hoga, chachaji. Hum log computer se kaafi kuch kar lete hain ab. Main ghar se hi aadhe as zyada kaam sambhal lunga aur agar kuch aisi zaroorat hui toh munshiji yahan aa jayenge. Agar kisi din factory jaana zaroori hua toh main chachiji ku bula lunga aur woh kuch der Naina ke paas ruk jayengi."

"Lekin beta tum kaise..." Bela was anxious.

Sameer could feel a hollow pit forming in his stomach at the prospect of Naina going away.

"Kya Preeti bhi aa rahi hai?" Naina asked.

Bela shook her head, "Preeti ke paas uski saas hain na... woh sambhal lengi. Waise bhi Preeti ko abhi time hai. Lekin Pandit ki mummy ne keh diya hai ki woh khud hi sab karna chahti hain."

"Main bhi kar lunga, chachiji. Aap log mujhe bata dijiye kya kya karna hai... main sab kuch khud karunga. Promise." Sameer quickly pinched his throat.

Bela and Anand looked at each other in exasperation, wondering how to convince the youngsters.

Sameer and Naina looked at each other in restlessness, wondering how to convince the elders.

When Anand turned back at them, he could see the pleading look on Sameer's face as he silently urged Naina to speak for them... she was equally distressed, on the verge of tears. He could see how Sameer had clasped his hands around her palm... the fear of being separated was evident in their mannerism.

With a deep breath, he blinked at Bela before speaking aloud, "Aisi haalat mein sabse badi zaroorat hai Naina ki khushi... aur woh usse Sameer ke saath hi milegi. Beta, tumhe bahari aaram dene ke badle hum tumse tumhara sukoon aur asli khushi nahi cheen sakte. Isliye tum yahin raho."

A dazzling, thankful smile lit up both their faces.

Anand pursed his lips, his eyes turning soft, "Sirf alag hone ke khyal se jo haalat ho gayi thi tumhari uske baad toh tumhe ek doosre se door karne ka hum soch bhi nahi sakte."

Naina lowered her eyes, tucking her hair behind the ear, the red streak creeping up her neck.

Sameer gave a grateful look to Anand, "Thank you, chachaji. Main aapko yakeen dilata hun ki Naina ka bohot achhe se khyal rakhunga."

Bela smiled fondly at him, "Tum nahi bhi kehte toh humein pata hai yeh. Lekin kuch baatein tumko aur Ramdhari ko samjhani hain. Chalo mere saath."

Naina patted his hand, prompting him to go out when he was about to press the switch to call Ramdhari. Nodding at her, he went out of the room with Bela.

Anand stroked Naina's head, "Waise toh hamare yahan rasm ke anusaar ladki apne bachhe ko maayke mein hi janm deti hai lekin tumhe pata hai na, mere liye rasmon se badhkar tum sab ki khushi hai... isliye maine tumhari baat maan li. Par ek baat tumhe bhi maan ni hogi."

"Kahiye na, chachaji. Main hamesha aapki har baat maanti aayi hun. Sirf yeh... Sameer se alag rehna..." She lowered her head again, unable to put it in words in front of him.

Anand nodded in understanding, giving her a proud look, "Tumpe mujhe hamesha se garv raha hai, Naina. Apni umr se kahin zyada samajhdaar aur doordarshi ho tum. Main chahta hun tumhe bohot saari khushiyaan mile jinki  kami itne saal tumhari zindagi mein rahi... isliye thodi chinta rehti hai iss haalat mein. Agar kabhi bhi, kisi bhi waqt tumhe zara bhi takleef ho ya kuch bhi pareshani ho ya koi choti si uljhan hi ho jismein tumhe samajh na aaye ki kya karna hai toh tum din raat ki parwaah kiye bina humein phone karogi. Hum paas nahi par har pal tumhare saath hain, beta. Yun toh Golu bhi hamara naati hai par Bela ko iss baar kuch zyada hi khushi aur utsaah hai. Jaise tum aur Preeti the aise hi tum dono ke bachhe ek saath dekhne ki baat hi alag hogi. Isliye tum dono ki sehat hamaare liye sabse badi chinta hai. Tum apna bohot zyada khyal rakhna aur aisa kuch mat karna jisse bachhe ko ya tumko kisi tarah ki takleef pohoche. Aur humse baat karne mein kabhi hichkichana mat."

Naina dipped her head to the side, "Aap jaisa kahenge main bilkul waisa karungi, chachaji. Meri jitni bhi khushiyon bhari yaadein hai woh sab aapke saath hain. Aapse zyada meri khushi ka khyal kisi ko nahi raha."

"Lekin ab woh jagah Sameer ki hai. Usko toh har waqt bas Naina ka hi khyal hai." Anand gave her a teasing smile.

Her cheeks were covered with the same hue again as she smiled shyly.

Anand patted her cheek, "Mujhe bohot shanti milti hai tum dono ka pyar dekh ke. Aise hi rehna. Aur ek doosre ka aise hi khyal rakhna."

Sameer heard his last words as he entered the room with Bela.

With a bright smile, he replied before Naina could say anything, "Rakhenge chachaji... yeh bhi aapse aur chachiji se hi seekha hai... ek doosre ko khud se pehle rakhna."

Bela smacked him on the arm, "Badmaash."

Anand got up and came towards him with a knowing smirk, "Tumhe seekhne ki kya zaroorat hai... tum toh khud Phd karke aaye ho."

Sameer rubbed the back of his neck, giving a slanting look to Naina who blushed profusely.

After they were gone, and Naina had eaten her mid day bowl of fruits, Sameer called up Munshiji, apprising him of the situation. Since they were working on existing contracts presently and most of the work has been computerised, it wasn't much difficult for him to manage from home for a few days.

"Aap yahan ki bilkul chinta mat karo, Sameer beta. Agar kuch hoga toh main phone kar lunga." Munshiji agreed with his decision of staying at home.

After the call, Sameer went towards the photograph in the hall. Nanu smiled at him, happily standing with both of them.

He touched the picture, "Nanu, aap khelna chhlahte the na mere bachhon ke saath... ab yeh aapki zimmedari hai ki hamari gudiya aur uski mummy ko koi takleef na ho. Aapki setting hai na bhagwanji ke saath... unko keh dijiye ki Naina ke liye koi mushkil na aaye ab... aur hamari baby apne time par aaram se iss duniya mein aaye. Jaise aap ne akele sab kuch sambhala tha... ghar, business, mummy aur mujhe... waise hi main bhi sab kuch sambhalna chahta hun. Aap mere saath denge na? Mujhe pata hai aapka ashirwad hai hamare saath. Bas yaad dilane aaya tha ki aap bhi bade dadu banne wale hain toh thodi mehnat karni padegi aur bhagwanji se hamari sifarish karni padegi. Chaliye, ab kaam pe lag jaaiye."

When he went back to the room, Naina had dozed off. There was still some time for lunch so he decided to let her rest till then. But the sleep induced laziness refused to leave her even at lunch time. With great difficulty, he was able to feed her and give her medicines before she drifted back to deep sleep again. He smoothed her hair, adjusted the quilt around her and went to work on the computer.

"Sameer, aaj mujhe itni neend kaise aa gayi?" She sat up in the evening, when he brought coffee for her.

He handed the steaming mug, "Achha hai na, tumhe aaram mil gaya. Warna kisi na kisi kaam ke bahane yahan se wahan ghoomti rehti."

She glared at him, "Bahane se kyon ghoomungi? Kaam hota hai tabhi jaati hun na."

He gulped, looking at her anxiously. Her agitation was usually triggered when she was tired or sleepy. Presently, she was none. He wondered the reason for this sudden flare up.

Her laughter startled him.

"Darr gaye na? Soch rahe hoge aise gussa dikhana hai toh chachiji ke paas hi rehne chali jaati." She giggled, seeing his baffled face.

It took him just a couple of seconds to know that she was teasing him.

"Nahi jaan, main toh tumhare jaane ki baat sunke pagal hi ho gaya tha. Tumse door reh sakta hun kya? Maine ussi waqt soch liya tha ki agar tumhe jaana hi pada toh main bhi saath chalunga." He moved closer to her, looking into her eyes.

She had no doubt about that.

Later, when they took a stroll outside in the garden, he wrapped a thin shawl around her. It wasn't much cold but her threshold of bearing a dip in temperatures was much lower than him. And he didn't want her to fall sick at this time. Bela had explained to him that healthier her body was, easier it would be for her to go through the coming days and at the time of childbirth.

It was somewhere in the middle of the night when Sameer felt some movement in the room. He patted the side of the bed. His eyes shot open, finding it empty.

"Naina." He sat up instantly.

She wasn't in the room. They kept a soft lamp on so that she could go to the washroom at night, without the fear of banging into anything. His eyes darted to the bathroom door. The beam of light was visible under it. He jumped off the bed, running towards it.

Before he could ask, the door opened. Naina came out wiping her face.

"Kya hua? Fir se kharaab lag raha hai kya? Kahin dard ho raha hai? Chachiji ne kaha tha agar dard ho toh unko phone karna hai ussi waqt... unko bulaun?" He barraged her with questions.

She kept looking at him with an amused expression.

"Naina, bolo na kya hua?" He held her shoulders, eyeing her from top to bottom.

"Bolne doge toh bolungi na." She rolled her eyes.

He quickly placed a finger on his lips, making her chuckle. He frowned, waiting for her to speak.

"Kuch hua hi nahi toh kya bataun... bas neend nahi aa rahi. Baar baar bathroom ke chakkar aur tumhari beti ki football practice, dono ne thaka diya." She placed a hand on her belly, feeling the kick again.

Glancing down at her stomach, Sameer quickly placed his hand close to hers. A wide smile spread on his face as he felt repeated kicks.

"Yeh aadhi raat ko kyon itni masti kar rahi hai?" He was surprised, feeling the movement all over as he moved his hand over her belly.

"Ab tum hi samjhao isse. Main toh thak gayi." She gave him a tired smile.

Taking the towel from her hand, he put it aside, and picked her up in his arms. She wrapped her hands around his neck, her gaze fixed on his dark jaw. When he put her on bed, she placed a quick kiss on his chin.

"Kya baat hai... aaj bada pyar aa raha hai... kya iraada hai?" Grinning, he sat next to her.

"Kuch nahi. Tum chup chaap so jao." She held back her smile.

"Aur tum?" He raised his brow.

"Mujhe neend nahi aa rahi, Sameer. Aaj din mein itni der so gayi thi na... upar se tumhari beti... jab tak iska dance band nahi hota main nahi so sakti." She placed both her hands on the stomach.

He shifted ahead, sitting cross legged next to her belly, and bent down, "Abhi aap bhi so jao na, baby. Dekho mumma kitni thak gayi hain. Kal khel lena. Aur jab aap bahar aa jaoge na, tab jitna marzi khelna, apne papa ke saath. Lekin tab tak mumma ko aaram karne do, please."

The baby kicked again.

He looked up at Naina with a sad face, "Nahi maani meri baat."

She titled her head to the side, fondly smiling at him, "Tum sachmuch bohot pyare ho, Sameer."

"Achhaw, toh pyare hone ke liye mujhe kya milega?" He gave a lopsided grin.

"Tumhare jitni pyari ek beti." She pinched his nose.

"Nahi, beti toh tumhare jaisi theek thak hi honi chahiye." He gave a mischievous wink, "Mere jaisi hui toh itni khoobsurat hogi ki saare Ahmedabad ke ladko ki naak todni padegi mujhe."

What he got was a punch on his chest from his wife and kick from his daughter under the palm that was on Naina's tummy.

I know you all are not gonna like this but let me assure you, I'm doing it only because there's no choice now.

I haven't been keeping well for last few days and today, after a visit to the doctor, I have been adviced to take proper rest. No, it's not Covid 19 thankfully.

I have to cut down on my activities for some time. So, taking a break of few days from my office and writing. Please accept this as something absolutely necessary otherwise I wouldn't have done it.

Would shortly announce when I'd be able to start back. Needless to say, I'd be as eager to return ASAP.

Extremely sorry to leave you stranded like this.

Hope I find you all here when I come back.
