Ek Kahani
Naina was in the kitchen when Sonali came after her bath. She had already instructed John to prepare only the tea as she wanted to make alu paranthas for breakfast.
"Arre Naina tu kyon yeh sab kar rahi hai... do din ke liye hi toh aayi hai... chod isse... John, aap dekh lena zara." Sonali took away the plate of boiled potatoes from her.
"Banane de na, Sonali, pata nahi do din se Sameer ne theek se breakfast kiya bhi tha ya nahi." Naina pulled back the plate, looking at her sadly.
Sonali let her continue, placing a hand on her shoulder, "Chal fir milke banate hain... inn ladkon ko pata toh chale inki kya lottery lagi hai jo aisa five star khana milta hai ghar mein hi."
Naina beamed at her, getting back to peeling the potatoes quickly.
"Lottery toh pakka lagi hai, madam... meri bhi aur Sameer ki bhi... lekin koi aur bhi hai yahan jiski lagi hai." Rahul exclaimed as he entered the kitchen.
Sonali turned back, placing her hands on waist, and looked at the helper, "John, aapne bhi shaadi kar li kya?"
"Ji mam?" He looked up quickly, confused.
"Nahi woh Rahul ne kaha na kisi aur ki lottery bhi lagi hai toh poocha... iske alava aur kaun hai yahan jiske baare mein keh raha hai?" Sonali looked around with searching eyes.
John stifled a smile and left the kitchen to clean the rooms, used to their banters.
"Achha, yahan aur koi aisa nahi hai?" Rahul stepped closer to Sonali.
"Naina, tujhe koi dikh raha hai kya? Mujhe toh bas do bechari biwiyaan dikh rahi hain jo apne apne bhukkad pati ke liye itni garmi mein alu paranthe bana rahi hain." Sonali waved herself with her hands, rolling her eyes.
"Oho jaaneman, main bana deta hun... tum kyon... " Rahul slipped one arm around her waist, wiping her forehead for nonexistent sweat.
Sonali pushed at his chest, flicking her eyes at Naina who was standing with her back to them.
"Maine kuch nahi dekha... na suna." Her amused voice reached them though.
Sonali pursed her lips at Rahul.
"Naina se kya sharmana, Sonu... isse Sameer ki aadat hai... aur uske aage toh main saadhu hun." He smiled mischievously.
Naina glared back at Rahul.
He held up his palms in resignation to both the girls, stepping back from Sonali.
"Achha Naina, Sameer theek hai naa... matlab... woh sardi toh nahi hai na?" Rahul asked tentatively, eyeing her to gauge her reaction.
Her prolonged gaze on him, with a stony face made him shuffle his feet nervously. Did Sameer actually get drunk on such a small dose of brandy... did he do something to offend Naina?
Her silence made him more tensed.
"Sardi nahi hui usse... tumne dawa jo de di thi." She stifled a smile.
"Dawa? Rahul, tumne Sameer ko... " Sonali turned to him with rounded eyes.
"Arre yaar, maine koi poori bottle thodi pila di thi usse... jitni tumhe di thi utni hi usse bhi... lekin woh toh..." Rahul blurted, turning towards his wife.
"Relax Rahul, koi baat nahi... Sameer theek hai... bas kal thoda nasha ho gaya tha usko." Naina said warmly.
He looked back at Naina with guilty eyes, "Sorry Naina, mujhe pata nahi tha usse itni jaldi chad jayegi... pehle kabhi dekha nahi na."
It was Sonali who chuckled this time, "Par maine aur Naina ne dekha hai... sirf Sameer ko hi nahi tumhe bhi... jab chocolates kha gaye the tum dono."
Naina joined her in laughing as Rahul sheepishly scratched his head.
"Main tum logon ko poore ghar mein dhoond raha hun aur tum sab kitchen mein masti kar rahe ho... kya baatein ho rahi hain?" Sameer entered the kitchen, looking at each one of them simultaneously.
"Aa yaar Sameer, dekh na dono mil ke meri class le rahi hain." Rahul quickly held out his hand.
"Fir toh main bahar hi jaata hun... mujhe line mein nahi lagna." Sameer retracted his steps, moving out of Rahul's reach.
"Tum dono hi bahar jao... hum log thodi der mein breakfast leke aa rahe hain." Sonali pushed Rahul towards the door where Sameer stood.
Naina looked back at him, he winked before leaving. Shaking her head, she went back to her work.
After a hearty breakfast where Naina made Sameer eat one more parantha after he had eaten three, they lazed in the living room, deciding to spend the day at home as it was too hot to go out. Rahul had stayed back home to be with his friends.
"Rahul, tum logon ko aana chahiye tha Munna Pandit ki shaadi mein... hamare saath saath unhone bhi miss kiya tumhe." Sameer sat on the carpet with his back against the sofa where Naina was sitting.
"Hum bhi aana chahte the lekin papa ne jo project mujhe de rakha hai usmein kuch problem aa gayi thi... mujhe theek nahi laga ki problem ke time wapas papa pe sab kuch chod dun." Rahul stated his reason for missing out the weddings.
"Lekin Naina, Preeti ne hamare Rishi ka dil tod diya Pandit se shaadi karke." Sonali shook her head sadly.
Naina was taken aback, "Lekin Sonali, Preeti toh... usne toh hamesha hi Pandit se... matlab Rishi ko... "
Rahul smacked Sonali's arm, quickly easing Naina's dilemma, "Aisa kuch nahi hai... yeh Sonali bas ched rahi hai tumhe."
Naina looked at one from other as Sonali laughed, "Kya Rahul, itni jaldi kyon bataya... thoda mazaa lene dete na."
"Main sach mein darr gayi thi, Sonali... Sameer ne bataya tha Rishi ke baare mein... hamari shaadi ke time jo hua." Naina huffed at her friend.
"Yaar Naina, tu pareshan mat ho... Rishi ka dil usse pehle aur uske baad aur bhi kai baar toota hai... jab se college mein aaya hai tabse har hafte pyar hota hai aur agle hafte dil toot jaata hai... kyonki har baar jo hota hai sirf uski side se hi hota hai... baad mein pata chalta hai ki ya toh ladki ka toh pehle se hi boyfriend hai ya uski shaadi hone waali ha ya fir koi Rishi ko hi bhai bana leti hai... ek ladki ka toh bada bhai boxer tha isliye hamare devarji apna dil wapas ghar le aaye." Sonali was in splits, telling about Rishi's adventures.
"Koshish kar raha hai bichara... har koi lucky thodi hota hai Sameer ki tarah jisse Rahul jaisa dost mila... main dhakka nahi maarta toh yeh maharaj toh muh chipka ke baithe rehte." Rahul winked at Sameer.
"Oye, main fir bhi bol deta... haan shayad thoda time lagta lekin bol deta." Sameer glared at him.
"Bol deta? Rehne de... Naina ke saamne toh jaata nahi tha... chupte chupate ghumta tha... tujhse pehle koi aur aa jaata toh?" Rahul teased.
"Aise kaise koi aur aa jaata? Naina ke aas paas aane ki himmat toh karke dekhta koi... uski aisi haalat karta main... meri Naina ke baare mein koi soch bhi kaise sakta tha?" Sameer sat up straight, his hands fisted.
"Sochne ka toh rehne de... tu bhi bas baithe baithe sochta hi tha... agar main tere andar ki jalan ko hawa nahi deta toh aaj pata nahi teri kahani kya hoti." Rahul further annoyed him.
"Kahani toh meri aur Naina ki pehle hi shuru ho chuki thi... aur iska poora hona hamari kismat mein likha hua tha... isiliye hum dono yahan aake mile... na chahte hue ek doosre se door bhag rahe the aur kismat ne ek saath ek hi jagah pe bhej diya." Sameer looked back at Naina, his eyes filled with love.
She smiled fondly at him, then looked up Rahul, "Sameer hamesha se maanta hai ki hamaari kahani tumhare saath ke bina kitni mushkil thi... sirf shuru karne mein hi nahi tumne hamesha hamare liye bohot kuch kiya hai, Rahul."
"Yaar Naina, aise thank you speech nahi dete... yun toh meri love story bhi tum dono ki wajah se shuru hui thi... sach kahun toh sabko tumhe thank you bolna chahiye... tum Sonali ke saath thi aur usko jalane ke liye maine tumse dosti ki... yehi dosti Sameer ko jalane ke bhi kaam aa gayi... toh hum sabhi ki kahani itni judi hui hai ek doosre se ki isse alag karna mushkil hai... hamari do nahi ek hi kahani hai shayad." Rahul summed up their stories.
"Ab tujhe khud ko hero banana hai toh bana le... sach toh yehi hai ki mera aur Naina ka janmon ka saath hai." Sameer shrugged nonchalantly.
"Haan toh mera aur Sonali ka kaun sa che mahine ka contract hai... hamara bhi che janam ka saath hai." Rahul looped an arm around his wife.
"Che nahi saat, Rahul." Sonali gave him an exasperated look.
"Ek toh chal raha hai na, darling... aane wale che ki baat kar raha hun." Rahul pinched her cheek.
The mention of these numbers made Sameer give a mischievous smile to Naina, making her blush profusely as their morning conversation came to her mind, followed by whatever happened after that.
"Yeh che saat ka chakkar band karo aur yeh batao lunch ka kya karein? Kahin chalna hai ya ghar pe hi khayenge?" Sonali shifted away from Rahul, making a face at him before asking Sameer and Naina.
"Che saat ka chakkar abhi shuru hi kahan kiya hai." Sameer mumbled, folding his arm to keep it in Naina's lap as he moved against her legs.
"Kya chakkar?" Rahul narrowed his eyes, having heard what wasn't meant for his ears.
"Ku... kuch nahi... Sameer ka dimaag kharab hai... kuch bhi bolta hai." Naina quickly swatted his arm which he didn't remove from her lap.
Rahul smirked, realising that it must be a private joke between them.
They decided to have a simple lunch at home.
Rest of the day was spent in more fun and teasing as they recalled their college days, and both their weddings.
After dinner, when Naina went back to the room while Sameer was still talking to Rahul about something related to the factory, her thoughts went back to his demands of previous day. Did he really want to see her in short dresses... she bit her lip.
When Sameer came to the room, it was empty. He looked around but Naina was nowhere. Thinking that ahe might still be with Sonali, he took off his shirt, looking for the track bottoms in his bag.
A rustling sound made him look up. Standing at the balcony door was Naina, in the pink nighty.
His eyes moved over her frame. The satin material moulded against her curves, falling like soft waves below her waist.
The colour, the feel, the surroundings, the look in her eyes... everything was weaving a spell on him.
She walked in slowly, her gaze fixed on him.
He couldn't take his eyes off her either.
"Yeh main kal pehenne ke liye laayi thi." She said in a low voice as she stood in front of him.
"Toh pehni kyon nahi?" He asked, realizing the next moment why she couldn't.
"Sorry Naina, woh kal... " He gave a contrite look.
She placed a finger on his lips, shaking her head.
"Sameer, iss kamre mein humne kitne din aur kitni raatein bitayi hain... khud ko rokte hue... saath hote hue bhi alag reh ke... tumhe kitni baar khud se ladte hue dekha hai maine... aaj humein fir se issi jagah pe ek nayi yaad banane ka mauka mila hai toh main usse bohot khoobsurat banana chahti hun." She whispered softly.
"Iss jagah pe hamesha mujhe kuch naya, kuch khaas mila hai Naina... New Year ke time tumhara saath ho ya exam se pehle wala hafta ya fir Ahmedabad jaane se pehle wale din... aur uske baad kal raat jo Naina mujhe yahan mili woh bhi bilkul nayi thi... shayad yeh jagah lucky hai mere liye... har baar ek nayi kahani banti hai yahan." He placed his hands on her waist, feeling her silky skin rub against the satin fabric.
"Soch raha hun, apne che aur saat ki planning karne ke liye bhi hum yahin aa jayenge." His husky voice made her understand the words after a few seconds.
He pulled at the knot of her belt as she turned, turning beetroot.
