Arjun had come from Surat to accompany Naina to Ahmedabad. Sameer would have loved to travel with her... but he could not do so, with Arjun coming along. So he booked his tickets in another train... Arjun and Sameer were acquainted with each other as they both were in school cricket team... but they had never been friends. And Arjun was very protective for his sister... Sameer remembered when a boy in Naina's class had tried to give her a letter... a love letter... Besides making him her rakhi brother, Arjun had given a good bashing to him as well.
It was not that he was scared, but Sameer wanted the time to be right for Naina's family to know about their relationship. He did not want to create any trouble for her... which would be unavoidable if they know of her involvement with him... given how conservative they were.
Naina left with Arjun in the late evening. Sameer saw her from his room. She halted for a moment at the main gate and looked back, towards his room.
"Naina, ruk kyon gayi? Chal jaldi, rickshaw aa gaya", Arjun called out.
" Jee, bhaiya", she raised her hand lightly to wave at him. Though he was not visible but Naina was sure Sameer would be watching her from his window.
He left for Ahmedabad next morning.
Arriving in the afternoon, Sameer got down from the train, dreading the prospect of going alone to the big house that always had nanu waiting for him. Today, there will be no one, except the servant, Ramdhari. He was the son of their previous servant and nanu had always treated him like a family member. He also took care of the house like his own.
Getting off from the rickshaw, Sameer looked at the magnificent white bungalow... and all the happy times spent here flashed before his eyes. He lifted his luggage and opened the gate, walking in, bracing himself for loneliness.
The moment he stepped in the living room, two figures jumped... knocking the air out of his lungs... enveloping him in a bone crushing hug... screaming in ecstasy. With great difficulty, Sameer maintained his balance. It took him a minute to realise what happened. And then he hugged back his best friends... his brothers... Munna and Pandit.
"Arre yaar, kal se tera intezaar kar rahe hai... ek din late kaise hua... tere exam to parso khatam ho gaye the ne... phir raat wali train se kyon nahi aaya? " Munna fired all questions at once.
Pandit could not be left behind, "Abe kal bhi itna khana banwaya... saara hamein khana pada. "
Sameer grinned at their affectionate complaint, "Bas kal nahi aa paya... par aaj to aa gaya hun na... exam khatam ho gaye mere... isliye ab main kisi sawal ka jawab nahi dunga... aur Pandit, aaj ka khana bacha hai ya woh bhi kha gaya tu? "
"Arre bhai, apne bhai ke liye to saare Ahmedabad ka khana bacha ke rakha hai... chal aaja... teeno bhai milke khayenge", Munna said, trying to hide his moist eyes.
Sameer stepped ahead and hugged him again. Pandit joined in too.
Later, they enjoyed lunch together... Ramdhari had prepared all favourite dishes of Sameer. They finished the meal with gajar ka halwa.
" Bhai, humne to gharwalon ko bol diya... jab tak apna yaar Ahmedabad mein hai, hum to yahi rahenge, tere saath", Munna declared.
Sameer was overwhelmed. They were ready to leave their house and stay with him for two months, so that he doesn't feel lonely... he was blessed to have friends like Munna Pandit.
The trio had a fun filled day, laughing, eating and pulling each other's leg. Munna and Pandit told Sameer about their college and friends... Munna shyly told him about Swati. Sameer was surprised how Munna gathered courage to go and talk to her. He had always been admiring her in school but whenever she was in front of them, he could not look up at her directly.
"Tu bata... tera college kaisa hai? Kitne dost banaye? Aur kuch padhai likha bhi kari ya fail hoga... iss ponga ki tarah", Munna teased Pandit again, earning a flying pillow from him.
" Tu na apni baat kar... main to phir bhi padh raha tha... tu toh Swati ke hi khyaalon mein khoya rehta tha... tu to pass hone se raha", Pandit was not to be left behind.
And they both chased each other around the room, as Sameer sat on the bed, laughing till his stomach ached.
They got tired in a while and jumped on the bed with him.
Pandit shifted close to Sameer and said in a low voice, "Waise tere college mein to ekdum mast ladkiyaan hongi, smart aur khoobsurat... koi girlfriend banayi kya? "
Sameer started coughing at Pandit's query. Munna ran to get him a glass of water.
Trying to divert the conversation, Sameer asked Pandit, "Tune banayi kya? Ab toh Munna bhi Swati ke saath rehta hoga... toh tu akela hi hai ya koi hai tere saath bhi? "
Pandit sighed, "Apni aisi kismat kahan ki koi hamein dekhe... teri tarah hero thodi hun...tere pe to Mumbai ki saari ladkiyaan fida hongi... bhai, aish karta hoga wahan tu... main toh abhi tak yahan durbeen laga ke dekh raha hun par koi mili hi nahi."
And it started another bout of pulling Pandit's leg... till they got tired and slept, falling over each other.
Sameer was the first one to get up next morning. His first thought was Naina. It had been two days since he had seen her. He was feeling restless... also guilty... for still hiding about her from his friends.
"Aaj mauka dekh ke pakka bata dunga", he promised himself.
His present dilemma was how to meet her... or at least see her. Suddenly his eyes fell on the telephone kept on the side table. He stared at it with wide eyes. And gave himself a smack on the head.
It had not occurred to him to ask for Naina's phone number.
He could have spoken to her everyday... he hated himself for this slip. But something had to be done.
He ran towards his sleeping friends and started shaking them, " Munna, Pandit... jaldi utho... utho na... subah ho gayi... Arre utho... uthooo... ", he was getting impatient.
" Kya hai, bhai... subah to roz hoti hai... usme naya kya hai? " Munna rubbed his eyes, still sleepy.
Sameer tries to shake Pandit, but he did not move at all.
Sameer got tired of trying and finally shouted, "Main ek ladki se pyaar karta hun. "
Pandit fell from the bed and Munna, trying to get up, got tangled in the quilt.
"KYA", both said together with eyes open but glazed.
" Haan... aur woh bhi mujhse pyaar karti hai", Sameer stated.
Munna and Pandit somehow managed to gather themselves and settled on the bed.
"Kaun hai? " Munna questioned.
"Naina... Naina Agarwal"
Pandit fell off the bed again... Munna pulled the quilt towards himself in a haste and his legs were tangled again.
They tried to catch a breath and got back on the bed, asking for more information, "Kabse? "
"Eleventh class se."
Pandit fell... quilt found Munna.
They were wide awake now. With great care, Pandit sat in the center of the bed... Munna folded the quilt and kept it aside. He too sat with Pandit, holding his hand. Both were breathing hard.
"Bhai, isse pehle ki hum tere in jhatkon se swargwasi ho jaayein... tu batayega ki yeh kahani kya hai?" Pandit demanded.
Sameer told them... starting from school when he fell for her... and how he met her in college... how she initiated conversation... how, slowly they got close... and he confessed his love. He still did not tell them about his real reason for going to Mumbai... or about Naina's feelings for him since school days.
They heard his entire story, open mouthed. When he finished, both sat gaping at him for a few minutes... mouth still hanging.
Munna was the first one to recover,
"Tu toh bada chupa rustam nikla... apne dil ki baat apne bhaiyon se bhi chupa gaya. "
Sameer didn't want them to feel bad, "Nahi yaar, aisa nahi tha... tab mujhe laga ki Naina shayad kisi ladke se baat karne mein comfortable nahi hogi... isliye nahi kaha... aur phir uske papa bhi toh rehte the. "
"Oh teri! Woh to safari suit ki beti hai", Pandit screamed, as the gravity of the situation hit him.
" Yaar Sameer, tujhe khatron se khelne ka bada shauk hai kya? Tune toh Gabbar se panga le liya, bhai! " Munna was seriously worried for his friend.
Sameer was getting scared listening to both of them... It was one thing to break the headlight of Rakesh sir's old scooter and get away... but asking for his daughter's hand in marriage was a totally different ball game.
"Kya sasurji ko manana bohot mushkil hoga? " Sameer gulped.
Munna and Pandit looked at each other...and then, at him... and shouted in unison, "oye, hoye... sasurjiiii...", giving mischievous smiles.
Sameer blushed.
When their teasing finally stopped, he told them his requirement... Naina's phone number.
" Arre... safari suit ka phone number ek baar school mein maine apni diary mein likha tha, abhi dekhta hun", Pandit ran to get his wallet.
He had a small diary for phone numbers where he found the residence number of Rakesh Agarwal.
Munna was given the responsibility of calling up in a girl's voice.
They dialled the number... all three holding their breath as they heard the ring on the other side.
"Hello", it was a child... a boy of about ten years.
"Hello, main Naina se baat kar sakti hun, main Munni bol rahi hun... uski saheli", Munna tried to talk like a girl, sounding squeaky.
" Naina didi to apne ghar mein hain... aap wahan phone karo." And he disconnected.
They all sat puzzled. It was the right number, the child knew who Naina was, but she lived in a different house... They pondered over the possibilities for a long time but could not solve the mystery.
Finally, it occurred to Pandit that they could ask Swati.
"Kya idea diya hai yaar", Sameer patted Pandit's back.
" Haan, issi bahane main bhi apni wali se baat kar lunga", Munna blushed.
They decided to call after breakfast so that Swati's father would leave for office.
All three finished their bath and had a breakfast of alu parantha.
It was call time.
"Hello... Munna? " Swati was surprised to hear his voice at this time in the morning... they usually talked at night... she quickly looked around to check if her mother was in vicinity.
"Haan, Munna... tera Munna", he replied shyly.
Pandit smacked him, " Kaam ki baat kar... aashiqi baad mein karna".
Munna glared at him and continued, "Swati, woh Naina ka number chahiye tha? "
"Naina ka number? Kyon? " Swati was puzzled.
"Woh Sameer... "
"Oh!! Jijaji ko chahiye, " Her tone changed immediately.
Munna was shocked, "Tujhe pata tha? "
"Haan", she replied coolly.
" Phir tune mujhe kyon nahi bataya? " Munna complained.
"Main kyon bataun? Tumhe toh tumhara dost batayega na", she stated.
Munna was silent for some time... till Pandit shook him.
" Haan... woh... woh dede phir... Naina ka number", he tried to focus on what he wanted.
"Woh to jijaji ko khud lena padega. " She said, matter of factly.
"Kyaa... matlab? " Munna's shock was evident from his face.
"Naina ka number... jijaji ko khud kuch tikdam lagani padegi... main to nahi de rahi", she did not relent.
" Sameer woh nahi de rahi ", Munna whined, still on phone.
Sameer snatched the phone from him, " Hello Swati, main Sameer... please number de do na... Naina se baat tak nahi hui hai do dino se... "
She did not melt, "Jijaji, number toh main nahi dungi... aapko khud hi pata lagana padega... haan, ek help kar sakti hun"
Sameer's sinking heart revived.
She continued, "Aaj shaam chaar baje main Law garden mein Naina Preeti se milne wali hun... hamara chaat khane ka program hai. "
Sameer's heart jumped in joy. He could meet her, finally.
And then she dropped the bomb.
"Uski chachiji bhi saath hongi. "
