Chapter 28

I ran down the hallway, feeling my chest constrict with each step I took closer to the boys locker room, dreading what I would find. What if I was too late? What if they'd already finished Isaac off, and I'd arrive to nothing more than limp body?

I skidded to a halt and shoved my shoulder into the door, making it swing wide and slam against the wall loudly. Immediately I was on alert, hands out, spells at the ready, body in the defensive position Kate had taught me, only to find the locker room in a state of calm.

It was nearly empty except for Isaac who was sitting on a bench, eyes wide and face pale as he stared at me. No one else was there. No danger, no hunters. No death.

"Y/n?" Isaac asked. He sounded surprised. "What are you doing here?"

I swallowed, glancing around again, but no one was there. "I had a vision you were in trouble. It must have been fake though."

Isaac frowned from where he sat, half paralyzed on the bench. I idly wondered what he'd be doing if he could move. "Can you get fake visions?"

I shrugged. "Nothing here is there?"

I started to leave, turning around and wishing I had never entered when Isaac called to me.

"Y/n wait, please."

I hated that my body listened, rooting to the spot as I slowly turned to face Isaac.

"Can we talk?"

I looked at the floor beneath me. "What is there to talk about?"

Isaac sighed. "Come on Y/n. Please."

Reluctantly I looked up at him. "Fine. You betrayed me. While I was falling for you and thinking you felt the same way about me you were using me for Derek and just following orders."

Isaac looked taken aback at my sudden harshness but got over it quickly. "I'm sorry Y/n. I didn't mean for this to happen."

I scoffed. "For what, for me to find out?"

"For you to believe this lie!"

I snarled. "I know it's true. Don't try to lie to me Isaac. All that shit you talked about being just the two of us but you were just doing what Derek asked."

"I'm not trying to lie. Yes, Derek told me to get close to you, but that's not why I did it. If anything it was an excuse I used to hide behind while I pretended I didn't have these feelings for you Y/n. I care about you. I've always cared about you. I meant it when I said I wanted to be just us. I still do."

I was quiet after Isaac's words. I didn't know what to think. I really liked Isaac. I cared for him deeply, but the hurt of what Isaac did was still fresh. He, whether he'd meant to or not, had betrayed me, lying to me about why he was there. Even if he enjoyed it and wanted to be there, the reason he was there in the first place was because of Derek.

Could I live with that? Knowing that our relationship started because of what Derek wanted, not what we wanted? Could I continue the relationship knowing Derek had another hand messing up my life, carelessly meddling with my feelings?

"Y/n, talk to me, please."

I opened my mouth but paused, unsure what to say. "I get what you're saying. But it doesn't change the fact you were there on Derek's orders. That our relationship, even if it felt real to the both of us, had started off fake-"

"-it was never fake-"

"-and that you broke my trust. I trusted you, Isaac. Do you know how rare that is? I've only trusted one person before you, and she ripped that trust to shreds. I hoped you'd be different."

"I am different," Isaac said desperately, slightly leaning forward. It was the most movement he could make in the current state he was in. "I'm sorry I hurt you and broke your trust, but I didn't mean to. I had no malicious intent. I'm not like Kate, Y/n. I don't want to hurt you. I like you just the way you are, and I don't want anything from you other than you yourself. Please understand that."

I did understand that. I understood it so well it was almost painful. The things I'd hoped for in secret, whispered in the dark, my deepest longings. To have someone who wanted me for me, not because of what I was. Even before I knew I was a witch there was Kate, wanting me to be a success, hating me if I wasn't.

And here Isaac was, offering everything I'd ever wanted on a silver platter. To have me for me. To be just us, not a witch or a werewolf. For him to want to be with me because of who I was, not what I was. To understand me, what I went through with Kate, and to still want to be with me regardless of that.

Before I could say another word, however, the quiet locker room was filled with the sickening sound of a pop, following by a whistling sound and a quiet thud as the bullet hit the wall. I let out a shriek, ducking to the floor as I stared at Isaac. He managed to dodge the bullet headed for him by rolling on the ground. Currently he was dragging himself across the floor, his legs still unresponsive from the Kanima venom.

I got up, turning around to find Gerard and two other hunters in the doorway to the locker room, one with a gun and the other a crossbow. Before I could do anything there was another whistling sound, followed by a blinding pain in my arm that turned my vision white for a brief second. A cry of pain escaped from my mouth as I stared at the arrow in my arm, a small trail of blood leaving the wound.

Isaac stopped his escape, terrified eyes turned on me. With my arm throbbing, searing hot pain slamming into me with every heartbeat I shook my head, urging him to continue on.

I focused back on my arm and the burning sensation around the arrow. I could distantly hear Isaac crawling away, of the hunters converging on them. They didn't give me a second glance. One shot arm and they considered me no longer a danger.

I heard rather than saw Gerard take out the sword, the tip of the metal weapon dragging agonisingly along the concrete floor, an unsavoury sound to the ears. Panic filled me, almost as dizzying as the sickening pain in my arm.

Thinking quickly, I focused on the arrow in my arm, gritting my teeth as I pulled it out, biting my lip to stop the whimpers escaping. I knew I didn't do it right, knew I made more damage taking it out than I would have keeping it in. I needed to help Isaac though, and I could move my arm better without an arrow sticking out of it.

The blood was pouring out quicker now, staining my hands crimson as I pressed one against the wound, the liquid trickling through my fingers as I breathed heavily through the pain. I needed to save Isaac. There wasn't much time. I couldn't heal myself quick enough, but I couldn't do anything with the pain consuming me.

I could get rid of the pain though. A quick spell and my arm would go numb. It was no healing spell, and it certainly wouldn't help the state of my arm, but it would let me help Isaac and not be stopped by the pain.

I cast the spell, an overwhelming relief coursing through my body when my arm went numb, the pain disappearing. There was still blood coming out of the wound but that was almost secondary as I turned to face the hunters, all three of them surrounding Isaac who was using the edge of one of the sinks to hold himself up.

I stalked towards them, feeling my power rise to the surface as I got ready. Isaac, spotting me, grinned, making the hunters pause. Before they could all fully turn around I had my hand out, throwing one of them against the wall with my power. There was a sickening crack as the hunter crumpled onto the floor and stayed there.

The other one started running at me, crossbow raised. I stepped out of the way just in time, Kate's training finally coming of use. The hunter was quick though, turning around and shooting an arrow right at me. I stopped it in midair, the hunter freezing at the display of power. While he was distracted, I spun the arrow around and shot it at the man, getting him right in the arm.

He let out a scream and stumbled, and I twisted my hand, the arrow turning around in the hunter's arm. He screamed even more, and I welcomed the satisfaction and feeling of power than came with it.

"How does it feel?" I asked him, taking a step forward.

The man cowered, trying to pull the arrow out of his arm. With every tug, however, I just pushed it in deeper. Just as I raised my hand, my fingers curling into a fist, Scott was there, slamming the man into the wall and knocking him out.

I blinked, startled, and let my hand fall limply to my side.

"Where is he?" Scott asked me, eyes scanning the room. "Where's Gerard?"

I looked around only to find the old man missing once again. I frowned. How long had I been preoccupied with that hunter? It had only felt like minutes, but maybe it had been more. With no sign of Gerard Scott turned and ran out of the locker room, expecting us to follow.

I hesitated, turning to Isaac. "Can you walk?"

He shrugged, hesitantly moving forward only to stumble. I ran to catch him, carefully putting him on the ground.

"I'll try and take the paralysis out," I told him, hands going to his arm where Jackson's scratch was. "I've never done it before though, so it might not work."

Isaac moved one shaky hand out, stopping me. "Y/n, your arm."

I looked down, noticing the stained crimson skin. It had dripped all down my arm and my hand, falling onto the floor. There was still a steady stream of blood leaking from the wound, but without the pain it didn't seem as bad as it really was.

"It's fine," I focused on Isaac, closing my eyes as I murmured quietly under my breath.

Isaac let out a shaky breath, and once I was finished flexed his fingers cautiously.

"Better?" I asked.

He nodded. "But Y/n, your arm-"

"No time," I said as I got up, gesturing for him to do the same. "Come on."

We ran through the corridors until we arrived outside, making our way to the field. Isaac made sure to keep pace with me, though I noticed he was going a little faster, angling his body in front of mine as if to protect me from some unseen danger.

We made it on the field, looking for Scott, only for our hearts to drop when we noticed the screaming and circle of people huddled around something on the field. We shared a glance before heading towards the commotion, Isaac now obviously planting himself in front of me.

We shoved through the crowd, ignoring the protests of teenagers and parents, to get a better view of what was happening. I was anxious, knowing Jackson had hurt someone and desperate to find out who. Desperate to make sure it was no one I cared about, however selfish those thoughts may be.

I was surprised, however, when I managed to push through the crowd, Isaac acting like some human shield between me and everyone else, to find Jackson lying on the floor, eyes closed and body lifeless.

Melissa kneeled before him, checking his pulse. "He's not breathing. No pulse."

She pulled up his shirt and gasps followed the action when they found blood covering his stomach, staining the grass red.

"Look," Scott whispered.

I followed his gaze, blinking when my vision started to go a little hazy, and found blood coating Jackson's fingertips.

"He did it to himself?" Isaac questioned.

That's when the dizziness hit me. I stumbled, the world suddenly spinning as everything went blurry. A sudden spike of pain made me hiss, and suddenly I was aware of my bloody arm and the pain surrounding it. I held it, the blood seeping through the cracks of my grasp, and unconsciously started leaning on Isaac.

"Woah, Y/n are you okay?" I heard him say distantly.

The pain and dizziness were too much though, the world spinning round and round and round.

I faintly heard Scott curse and a pair of hands hold me before everything went black.
