Chapter 15
I was in Allison's car with her and Allison as we pulled up to Lydia's house where we were to drop her off. I still felt unbearably tired, but sitting down made me feel slightly better. Allison slowed to a stop as we rolled up Lydia's driveway, the silence in the car deafening.
Allison turned to Lydia, the two girls in the front while I watched in silence from the back. "I need you to promise that you won't say anything about what just happened."
Lydia scowled. "I'll promise not to say anything about what just happened if one of you tell me what the hell just happened."
I sighed. "It's kind of complicated."
Lydia shot me a glare. "Well why don't you start with, why was Derek there? Or where Jackson went? Or what's wrong with Erica? Or why you look like you're about to collapse."
Allison and I stayed silent, guilt churning in our guts. I wanted to tell Lydia everything; I really did, but Scott had warned me not to. He said it would be best if she stayed out of all of this, which meant lying to her about what really happened tonight.
At our silence Lydia snapped, "oh do you need a minute to come up with a plausible lie?"
"Part of the reason I'm asking is because Scott and I aren't supposed to be seeing each other, okay?" Allison said. "So it's better if you just keep what you know to yourself."
Lydia stared at Allison, face blank as an icy fire raged behind her eyes. "Fine. I'll keep what I know about you and your boyfriend- which is nothing- to myself."
Lydia opened the car door, about to get out of her seat when Allison grabbed her arm, Lydia stilling at the contact.
"Hey," Allison said, "he's not just my boyfriend. You get that right?"
Lydia's eyes flickered to the hand holding her arm. "Let me go."
Allison ignored her. "Just for one second please try and remember-"
"Remember what?" Lydia snapped, a wet sheen over her eyes as she tried to hide how much being in the dark hurt her.
"Remember what it feels like," Allison said, her voice soft. "All of those times in school when you see him standing down the hall, and you cannot breathe until you're with him. Or those times in class when you can't stop looking at the clock because you know he's standing right outside there waiting for you. Don't you remember what that's like?"
Silence filled the car as Allison waited for Lydia's response. I looked at my hands, feeling the tiniest bit of envy of Allison. I'd never felt that, never had that kind of love. I wish I had, but we're not all as lucky as Allison Argent.
"No," Lydia eventually breathed.
Allison sighed. "What do you mean 'no'? You've had boyfriends."
Lydia's eyes fluttered shut briefly. "None like that."
Then she was out of the car, like spending one more second with us would have been the end of her. We watched Lydia hurry up her driveway and enter her house, not giving us so much as a second glance.
When she was out of sigh Allison reversed out of the driveway and took us home. I still felt heavy and sluggish, so it was a relief to finally get home and collapse onto my bed. I didn't so much as blink before sleep grabbed me into its warm embrace.
. . .
When I checked my phone the next day, I had multiple missed calls from Scott and Stiles. They'd continued hunting the Kanima after I'd fallen asleep and had managed to capture him and put him in a police van.
"You're telling me, your idea of a solution is kidnapping the mass murdering lizard boy who is rich and could easily employ three lawyers to send you to jail at the same time?"
Stiles was quiet on the other side of the line after I called him. "Well, when you say it like that..."
I sighed. "You're an idiot. I'll come see you after I attend at least one of my classes."
With that I hung up and went downstairs, meeting up with Allison for a quick breakfast before getting into her car. As we drove, I thought about last night. I wasn't exhausted anymore; in fact I felt better than ever, like using my powers was good for my body. I also thought about Isaac and how he hadn't killed Lydia. How he hadn't even tried to. When I was fighting Boyd and he'd stayed there instead of leaving to find Lydia. He'd stayed there and hadn't helped Boyd try to fight me. In fact, he'd only stepped forward to stop Boyd from hurting me, not help him.
I frowned, annoyed at how confusing Isaac was, and got out of the car as Allison parked in the school's car park. We entered the school and I looked around for Isaac but found nothing. I wasn't sure if I was relieved or disappointed.
I filled Allison in on everything the boys had told me during class, only to be interrupted when Allison was called to the headmaster's office, otherwise known as Gerard's office. I wished her good luck and spent the rest of the class worrying about why Gerard wanted to see her.
Finally class finished and I left quickly, though there was still no sign of Allison. It was only when I was halfway through my next class that Allison returned, sitting down next to me as the teacher continued the lesson. I was dying to know what had happened, but the rest of the class was quiet except for the teacher so I was forced to wait until that class was over.
"What happened?" I asked when we exited the classroom.
Allison glanced around before explaining to me how Gerard had interrogated her about Scott, Derek, and any other possible werewolves. She said he went so far as to feel her pulse to see if she was lying, which I cringed at. She also warned me that he might try to do the same to me, and to be prepared for the interrogation.
As we walked to our next class, we noticed handymen installing security cameras in the hallways. We shared a look, feel uneasy, and hurried to our next lesson. It wasn't a nice feeling, being watched, and the cameras were dangerous reminders that we were not safe. That there were people in power within this school who would like to see my friends dead.
We got to class and sat down, Scott sitting a few seats in front of us. Allison sent me a look, urging me to catch his attention, but before I could even try the class door opened and our teacher walked in. Or who was supposed to be our teacher but was instead Victoria Argent, brandishing a wicked smile and ice-cold eyes.
"I'm afraid your teacher was feeling ill today and had to take the day off," Victoria announced as she entered the room, making her way to the desk where she leaned against it. "So you're stuck with me as a substitute." Allison and I shared an alarmed look. "Also, Y/n dear, the principle would like to talk to you."
My heart stuttered at her words, Gerard no doubt wanting to interrogate me as he had Allison. I nodded my head and stood up, sending Allison what I hoped was a reassuring smile before exiting the classroom, Victoria's voice as she taught the class fading away into nothing.
I passed the security cameras on my way again, purposely avoiding looking at them as I arrived at the front office. Before entering I closed my eyes and murmured a quick spell under my breath, feeling my magic surrounding before it dissipated, its order completed.
I knocked on the door, waiting for the faint 'come in' before entering the office. I looked around, if only to avoid looking at Gerard for a few extra seconds to gather my bearings. The office was average sized, a few bookcases to the side, filing cabinets on the other, student achievements lining the wall, and of course a desk in the middle of the room.
I reluctantly looked at Gerard, flashing him a smile. I knew he was Kate's father, that technically he was my adoptive grandfather, but I didn't trust him. Not only did he start the war between hunters and werewolves, but he also gave me the idea that he knew something about Kate that I didn't.
"Y/n, good to see you, please sit," Gerard greeted, gesturing to the chair on the other side of his desk.
I obeyed, sitting on the edge of the seat, my back stiff and shoulders tense. I just wanted this to be over, because sitting in a room alone with him made me feel uncomfortable.
"I just have some questions for you Y/n, if that's okay. Sorry to take you out of your class time."
I gave him another fake smile. "It's alright. Ask away."
Gerard smiled, pleased with my answer. "I was wondering, are you aware of the Argent's history?"
I froze. He was needling. He wanted to know how much about the Argents I knew. How much Kate had told me.
"Kate told me a few stories here and there," I answered evenly.
Gerard leaned forward. "What stories, if you don't mind me asking?"
I swallowed. I couldn't not answer his question. "Oh, well, she told me about how the Argents had once been werewolf hunters, or so the legend goes, and that there would be fights between werewolves and hunters that witches were involved in."
I tried to make it sound like I didn't believe what Kate had told me. That all she'd told me were bedtime stories and I still believed them to be just that.
Gerard nodded slowly, leaning back into his chair as he intertwined his fingers together. "And, sorry if this upsets you, what did Kate tell you about your parents' death?"
I went tense, feeling an odd sense of cold fill me. Why would he ask that? What did he want to know about my parents?
"They died in a car crash," I answered slowly, my voice flat.
Gerard nodded. "Ah, yes, a car crash. I recall Kate telling me that. And that's all she told you?"
My skin prickled. "Am I supposed to know more?"
Gerard shook his hand, waving his hand like my question was nonsense. "Oh no, I just heard it was a bad car crash was all and wondered if she's given you the more gritter details of it."
I was still suspicious but it wasn't as if I could confront him about it so I just nodded instead, filling that information away for later. Gerard continued his interrogation.
"I'm not sure if you've noticed, but one of your fellow classmates, Jackson Whittemore, is missing."
I hid the panic from my face, shrugging carelessly. "I wouldn't know. He's a jerk, and I prefer to not hang out with him."
Gerard nodded before standing up, taking a few steps towards me. "I just have something I'd like to do. It's nothing bad, but it ensures that you're telling me the truth."
I stayed silent as Gerard explained how he was going to put his fingers on my pulse, and how if I was lying it would jump. I nodded at the end, giving him permission to do so, because I couldn't very well say no without looking suspicious.
My skin crawled where I felt his clammy fingers touching my neck, finding my pulse. I stayed silent until he started questioning me.
"Do you know where Jackson is?" He asked.
"No."
My pulse stayed the same.
"Do you know anything else about the Argent family other than the stories Kate told you?"
"No."
My pulse stayed the same.
"Do you believe in any of the stories she told you?"
"No."
My pulse stayed the same.
Gerard moved away, taking his fingers off my neck and I let out a silent sigh of relief. He was quick to dismiss me after that, having no further need of me, and I left gratefully. As soon as I exited the room I silently took off the enchantment I'd placed upon me before entering, the one that concealed all signs of lying, pulse spikes included. It was usually supposed to be used when lying to werewolves, but this situation was an exception.
