( ABOUT A BOY )
PENDLETON, OREGON
BAR
[ ☾]
A man is getting pushed out of the bar by the Bartender. They continue to argue. "It wasn't me, man! I didn't take it!" The Man yells.
The Bartender forcibly pushes him. "You keep on coming and stealing from me! Huh? Where's my money?" He asks.
"It was that—"
"Where's my money? Where's my money?! You give me my money!" The Bartender pushes him out the back the door. The Man falls on the pavement. "Swear on my mother, J.P., I see your face in here again...I'll kill you." A homeless man by the dumpster over looks the whole fight.
J.P stands up. "Like Hell. This is freakin' America, man. You can't just—" He starts. The Bartender walks back into the bar and closes the door. J.P glares at the homeless man. "What you looking at?" He walks to his car and is jumped from behind by a large man with a scar on his face.
The man grabs the hex bag that is hanging from his neck, causing a beam of light to illuminate the parking lot. J.P. screams. The homeless man runs over to the noise and encounters a pile of clothes where J.P. used to stand and looks up at the sky.
SUPERNATURAL
The scene fades in on Dean in the Men of Letters Bunker researching on how to extract the Mark of Cain from his arm. James Gang's, "Ashes, The Rain And I" play in the background during the montage.
Elena knocks on the door frame. "Hey." She says and walks in the room.
"Hey." Dean says, not looking up from his book. "Wanna help with some lore?"
"I can't." Elena says. "I'm meeting Caroline at the hospital."
"Ok." Dean looks at her neckline. "Ooh. That's new."
Elena touches the necklace he gave her. "I thought since you got it for me, I can wear it. You like?"
"Depends. Does it bring your memories back?" Dean asks.
"Well, no, but I'm here, aren't I?"
"Oh. Hey. You forgot this." Dean hands Elena her phone. "You're not free tonight by any chance, are you, because I know this little Italian joint that has steak so good you actually think you're eating a slice of heaven."
"Heh. And I happen to have a weird steak obsession." Elena says.
"Perfect." Dean says.
"Great." Elena smiles.
"And I'm thinking maybe after that, we can go the Theater. It's not my thing, but they're playing some cheesy French flick."
Elena laughs. "I don't speak French, Dean." She says.
"Well, not to see the movie, silly." Dean says. "To hide in the back and throw popcorn at the hipsters."
Elena laughs, then frowns. "Wait, we've gone on this date already, haven't we?" She asks and Dean says nothing. "Dean, that's cheating, okay? The memories? They're only half mine. You already know everything about me."
"Cheating? Cheating is erasing all of our epic memories. That's cheating." Dean says.
"I'm serious. Look, if we're going to do this, then we can't just pick up where we left off. Because I don't remember where that is." Says Elena.
"I understand. Where would you like to start?" Dean asks.
"At the beginning." Elena says. "I'm coming back at six; you can pick me up then."
"Fine." Dean says.
Elena grabs her things and heads for the door. "Fine." She repeats.
"Great."
"Great." She says.
"Good." Dean says.
Elena is smiling and walking out the door. "Bye." She says.
"Bye." Dean waves at the door shuts closes.
Dean is on the floor of his room and is reading a large book with ancient inscriptions written in it. A knock on the door and Sam enters. "Hey." He says.
"Hey." Dean says.
"Caught a case." Sam hands over a tablet. "Apparently something is taking people." Dean takes the tablet. The screen is on a News site with the title 'Mysterious Disappearances Baffle Police'. "And leaving their clothes."
Dean enlarges the picture of J.P. on the tablet. "Hmm. About time this gig got an 'R' rating." He says and Sam scoffs. "All right. Why don't you check it out? I'll hold down the fort."
"Dean, you haven't left the bunker in a week." Sam says.
Dean tosses the tablet behind him on the bed. "And?" He asks.
"And you can't just live the rest of your life locked up in this room." Sam says.
"I don't know. I got three hots and a cot. Could be worse."
"Look, I know you're worried about the mark." Sam says.
"Yes, Sam. I am. Between what I did to Charlie—" Dean starts.
"Charlie forgave you. How about you forgive yourself?" Sam asks.
"Because I'm not exactly batting 1,000 here, you know?" He asks.
"Yeah, I do know that, but staying locked up in here, sitting on the ground reading the same lore books over and over and over again, it's not helping you." Sam says. "You need to get back in the game for your own good. You can beat this, Dean."
"Do you really believe that?" Dean asks.
"Yeah, you're damn right I believe that." Sam says.
"You know, you also believed in the Easter bunny till you were 12."
"No I didn't." Sam pauses. "Look, I was 11."
"And a half." Dean corrects.
"And a half. Right." Sam sighs. "So?"
Dean closes the book. "Okay." He says.
HOSPITAL
[ ☼ ]
Elena enters the busy hospital with a bouquet of daisies. She goes to the desk and smiles brightly. "Hi, I'm Elena Gilbert. I'm here to see a Mrs Forbes?" She says and the woman nods.
The Receptionist leads Elena to Sheriff Forbes hospital room. Caroline is there, sleeping on the chair. Elena places a hand on her shoulder and she jolts awake.
"Is something wrong?!" She asks, looking at her mother's bed.
"No no." Elena says in a hushed whisper. "I just came to visit."
"Oh." Caroline says as she stretches. "I thought—."
"Everything's fine." Elena says. "How is she doing?"
Caroline sighs. "The doctors say she hasn't long until—" She starts, but stops to compose herself.
"You're handling this remarkably well." Elena says.
"I'm just putting on a brave face for her." Caroline says. "Anyway, moving on to less depressing topics, how are you and Dean?"
Elena smiles. "We're doing good. He actually planned another do-over date later tonight." She says.
"Romantic." Caroline says.
"Speaking of romance, when was the last time you've spoken to Sam?" Elena raises a brow.
"When Dean died and you left, we've sort of grown apart." Caroline says. "But I guess it's for the best. I kind of hated him before I loved him."
Elena smiles. "You just said—" She starts.
"It's nothing, alright? Don't tell him I said that, okay?"
"My lips are sealed." Elena says and Caroline nods. "For now."
BAR
[ ☼ ]
Sam and Dean are outside of the bar in their Fed suits talking to the homeless man. "And then—then—then there was this bright light, and—bam—the dude's just gone. Nothing left but, uh..." The Homeless Man says.
"Cheap suit and a pair of florsheims?" Dean asks.
"Pretty much." The Man says and Dean nods.
"You see anyone else?" Sam asks.
"No, sir, officer."
"And what about, uh, a chill? Or did you smell any rotten eggs?" Dean asks.
"What? No, man." The Man says. "Uh...I smelled flowers, though."
"You smelled flowers? What kind of flowers?" Sam asks.
"Flowerly Flowers."
Sam looks annoyed. "Flowerly Flowers." He repeats.
"Look. We all know what's—" The Man sighs. "—going on here, okay?"
Dean closes his eyes. "Don't say it." He pleads.
"Aliens." The Homeless Man says.
"He said it." Dean says.
"Yeah he did." Sam says.
"Dude was abducted. Believe me, I know." He looks up at the sky. "May 2003. Those suckers, they grabbed me, and they probed me everywhere."
"Okay." Dean says as he and Sam wear disgusted looks on their face and begin to walk away from the man.
"Thanks for your time." Sam says.
"I'm talking everywhere." The Man says.
Sam gives him a thumbs up. "Yup." He clears his throat. "Okay. Okay."
"Well, the wheels just came flying off the bus." Dean says.
"Yeah. No cold spots means it probably wasn't a ghost." Sam says.
"No sulfur means no demons, so that leaves us with what? Couple of little green dudes and a bucket of lube?" Dean asks.
Sam scoffs. "Or fairies. Or...angels." They stop walking in front of the bar
"Ugh. I'd rather have the little green dudes." Dean says.
"All right, I'll go scope out J.P.'s place. You, uh—you ask around inside." Sam says as Dean gets a very concerned look on his face. "Or you know what? We don't have to split up."
"No, no, no. It's cool." Dean says.
"I can handle a little 20 questions with the locals, okay?"
"You sure?" Sam asks.
"Yeah, hey, look, it's a dive bar. It's my comfort zone, hmm?" Dean dangles the Impala's car keys in front of Sam.
"All right." Sam grabs the keys. "Good. Great."
Sam walks past Dean, patting him on the shoulder. He then proceeds to get in the car. Dean walks into the bar looking a little nervous. Headwater's "Only A Matter Of Time" plays in the background.
Dean walks up to the bar and takes a seat. The Bartender sighs. "What can I do for you?" He asks.
It was Dean's turn to sigh. "Screw it. I'm gonna believe in myself." He says.
"Attaboy."
"Give me something dark and strong." Dean says as the Bartender gets to work. "Hey, did you know that guy that went missing – J.P.?"
The Bartender pulls out a shot glass and begins to fill it with whiskey. Meanwhile, a woman at the bar overhears Dean's conversation. "Who's asking?" He asks.
"Just an old pal." Dean says.
"Look, I'm sorry to hear about what happened. But... guy's a lowlife. That night, I had to kick his ass out of here for stealing my tips." He says. "Whatever J.P. got... probably had it coming."
"Ouch." Dean holds the drink and hesitantly throws it back. His heart is pounding. He touches his arm where the Mark of Cain lies.
"J.P. wasn't that bad." The Woman says.
"You knew him?" Dean asks.
"This isn't exactly 'Cheers', but yeah." She says as Dean walks over to the woman. "And don't get me wrong, I would not buy a used car from the guy." She chuckles. "But he was harmless."
"So, what was his problem?" Dean asks.
The Woman laughs. "What wasn't? You're in here getting stunned while the sun's still up, your life's a regular Charlie Foxtrot. Trust me." She says. A man sitting at the tables in the bar listens in on their conversation.
"I'm Dean." He says.
"Tina." She says and Dean signals the Bartender for two more drinks.
Dean and Tina have moved from the bar to a table. They've been there for a while, drinking, for there are various empty glasses on the table. A waitress drops off two more shots. "There you go." She says.
Tina laughs. "How do you know the Royale Motel in Scranton?" She asks.
"My Dad, me and my bro – we got snowed in there for a week." Dean says.
"Well, I was there for about three months after my father drank all our money away. Lived on white rice and Tic Tacs until they kicked us out. Good times."
Dean chuckles. "My Dad was always working, so I came up with about 101 different ways to make macaroni and cheese." He says.
"Serious?" Tina asks.
"Oh, yeah. Now, add ketchup for spice, hmm?" Dean asks. "Uh, tuna, hot dogs, fluff marshmallow mix."
"Ugh! That sounds disgusting."
"Yeah, well, my brother thought it was exotic." Dean says.
Tina laughs and holds up her shot glass. "Well, here's to, uh, crappy childhoods." She says. Dean holds his up as well and they clink glasses.
"Hey. All right." Dean clears his throat. "Oh." His cell phone rings. "Oh. Sorry." He fishes for his phone in his suit jacket.
"I should go." Tina says.
Dean pulls out his phone and Sam is calling him. "Uh..." He says as Tina gets up from the table and grabs her jacket.
"Before you fall hopelessly in love with me." She says.
"You gonna be okay?" Dean asks.
"I always am." Tina leaves as Dean finally answers his phone.
"How we looking?" Dean asks.
Sam is at J.P.'s apartment. "Not great. Turns out J.P. was about three days from getting evicted." He says. "His landlord said the guy blasted Neil Diamond 24/7." Tina is giving the Bartender a hug goodbye. Dean eyes them suspiciously. "And that his bathroom was, 'Like staring into the Devil's butt'."
"That's vivid." Dean says.
"And accurate. I saw it." Sam says.
"You saw the John, or, uh—" Dean starts.
"Don't." Sam says as Dean smiles, amused at his joke. "So, you got anything?"
"Yeah. I got, uh, jack with two scoops of squat." Dean says as Tina leaves the bar. "I don't know, man. I think we ought to just call it a night and, uh—" He sees a large mysterious man walk out of the bar right after Tina.
"And what? Dean? Hello?" Sam calls out.
"Sammy, I think I got something." Dean hangs up the phone.
Dean follows the same path Tina and the mysterious man went. "Tina?" Dean calls. Tina screams off screen and the same white light appears. Dean pulls out his pistol and rushes over to a smoking pile of clothes by the dumpster.
As he examines it, the mysterious man comes up behind him. Feeling someone else's presence, Dean turns around. The man then grabs the hex bag hanging around his neck and a white flash appears.
WITCH'S BASEMENT
[ ]
Dean opens his eyes and looks around the room. There are bars on the windows. He's changed clothes as well. He's now wearing an oversized yellow hoodie. "What the hell?" He says.
He tries to open the door, but it is locked from the inside. He then pulls on the bared windows but they don't budge. He notices his hands look different and quickly turns to a dusty mirror. After wiping the dust off with his shirt it's revealed that Dean has reverted into his 14 years old self.
"Son of a bitch."
