When Eli asked me to that party, I didn't know what to make of it. I understood that he was trying to impress his professors but why choose me? I was a twenty something year old with a masters degree in fiction and I didn't have a job. There was nothing impressive about my life. Or me, for that matter. But I agreed because it was Eli and he had done so much for me and I had no reason to say no.

It wasn't until he picked me up that I started to get into the spirit of things. The way Eli was looking at me was different. It was flattering and he had brought me flowers and we were in a town car and we were in New York City, it was amazing and impossibly romantic. Just from the atmosphere of the night I could tell something was different. We had been friends for so long and even though we had slept together, we had never been much more. But that night, it seemed like we could be more.

I felt fantastic and he looked fantastic and I could barely stand the anticipation. It was going to be a memorable night, that much I knew.

"Try not to show everyone how smart you are."

"Why not? It's a bunch of doctors, they're all smarter than me."

"You'd be surprised. And you could've been a doctor if you wanted to."

"But I didn't want to."

"I know but if you show how smart you really are, behind all the snark and thing you call wit, you'll see how many stupid people they allow to become doctors."

"You should've just hired a hooker."

"And have her recognize one of my married bosses from a previous endeavor? No way. I'd rather take my chances with you."

"You certainly know how to make a girl feel special. No wonder you know which hookers have also been with your bosses."

"Just shut up and get ready okay?"

"Okay but I'm ordering anything I want tonight and you're paying. And don't expect me to put out either."

"I wouldn't dream of it."

"Don't be crude."

"Says the girl who tells me she won't put out without me even suggesting she should."

"You always suggest it without suggesting it."

"How?"

"You ask me to go with you places."

"That's not the same thing."

"Perception is reality."

"Just shut up already."

"Never."

"I should've known."
