Once Julie left and I knew she wasn't coming back, I had no reason to stay the same. If I was going to have to figure out my life without her I had to reevaluate. The other constant I had to focus on was medical school so I focused on that. Before everything had happened I had been focused on getting a good residency and I went back to that goal. Not to mention the professor Julie had been talking to when she saw me, the one who had found her a cab and said she thought I was better than that, had given me a long lecture when she saw me in class next.

She told me that a lot of her colleagues had looked down on me but she had always tried to give me the benefit of the doubt. But she said seeing me do that showed my true colors. I may be a good student, she said, but not a good person and you couldn't be a good doctor if you didn't have the knowledge and the moral compass. It was bad form and she wouldn't recommend me for anything.

It's hard to decide what to say to something like that. I was already turning over a new leaf but there wasn't much else I could do. My only hope was that I would show that I was as good at my studies as she thought and show that that night was not my usual MO. That way I could hopefully get her to recommend me for one of her lesser residencies. Or at least I would make sure she wasn't going to tell whatever hospital wanted me that I was a horrible person. What had happened had already cost me Julie, I wasn't going to have it devalue my years of school. I wasn't prepared to handle that.

"Hi."

"Um, hi."

"You were at that medical holiday party, right?"

"Yes, I was."

"Elliot, right?"

"Eli, but yeah."

"Not used to people actually calling you your full name?"

"Not in a long time."

"I knew you looked familiar."

"Yeah you look familiar too."

"Oh really."

"Mhmm. Do you know if there's a difference between these two detergents? They look exactly the same."

"There's a difference. That one's cheaper."

"That's good enough for me."

"So you remember me from the party?"

"I do."

"No you don't. And don't get that shampoo, it'll just dry your hair out. Get this."

"Women's shampoo?"

"What, like it will make you less of a man or shrink your dick?"

"Fine, I'll get the shampoo. And what makes you think I don't remember you?"

"Because I know you don't. You spent all night talking to either your professors or your date."

"I talked to more people than that."

"Right, you did. But I doubt we could count what you did with my friend as talking."

"She was your friend?"

"Friend of a friend, actually. We all came with one of my friends. And I knew you didn't remember me."

"Fine, I didn't. And I didn't sleep with your friend of a friend."

"Whatever. Why'd you do that, anyway? You were there with someone and you guys looked happy."

"We were."

"Then why'd you screw it up?"

"..."

"Don't try to avoid the question. I saw your friend leaving the party. She was crying. I also saw you coming out of the coat closet and running out of the party when you realized she had left."

"I was stupid, that's all."

"What was her name?"

"Julie."

"Girlfriend?"

"Just friend."

"Pity. You guys looked good together. So I'm going to ask again: why'd you hook up with someone else?"

"I got scared."

"Of what?"

"Messing things up with Julie."

"Well I think you did that."

"I know. And if I didn't already know that when I did it, Julie sure let me know."

"Smart girl. She never put up with your shit?"

"Not if she can help it."

"She seems cool. She was probably really good for you."

"Yeah, I guess... Is there a point to this conversation?"

"I wanted to introduce myself. After seeing what went down at the party I was curious."

"I don't really want to talk about it anymore and I really have to finish my shopping so could you just, uh-"

"Get the hell away from you?"

"Yeah."

"All right. But let me introduce myself first since you still don't know my name."

"Fair enough. Hi, I'm Eli, it's nice to meet you. What's your name?"

"Nora."
