Chapter 58 - Feeling Far

At least Jasper wasn't here... If he was anywhere but here, it was better. As long as he was alive... Fletch was asleep to my left and Ahri had fallen asleep with her head on my lap. I laid my head on Fletch's shoulder and closed my eyes.

I followed Jasper down an empty hall, he held my hand in his as he pulled me along behind him. He walked through a door and I followed after him but suddenly he was gone. I was alone.

Four walls and a roof. Nothing else.

I run my hands against the wall where I'd come from. Where did Jasper go? I walked in a circle, starting to feel disoriented as I looked around me. There was nothing. No one.

It was just me.

Then suddenly my name is called out. At first, it's quiet and far away. Then I hear it again, this time louder and more clear.

It was a woman calling for me.

A third time, and now the voice is painfully clear.

"Cat? Where are you? Catarina?!" I call out for her but only my voice echoes back to me.

I run along the wall, running my hands against the concrete trying to find a way out. My breathing starts to get faster and I can feel my heart thumping in my chest.

Another voice calls my name, this time sounding desperate.

"Please, where are you?!" I call out.

They call my name again and I stop against the wall as I hear who it is.

"Allie..." I whisper as I stop running and lean against one of the walls.

"Sasha," She calls out again and sounds even more clear.

I shake my head. "No no no... you're not here." I choke up as I speak. "You're dead." I close my eyes as I lay my head against the wall. They're not real, they're dead. They died. They didn't get to live.

Another voice begins to call out for me. This time it's a man's voice.

He calls out again.

Trent.

"Why are you here?!" I shout but all that follows is a piercing silence.

I drop my head into my hands, breathing heavily as their voices start to spin in my head.

"Take care of Ahri for me." "Is he going to be okay?" "This is my wife, Jeanine" "Oh my gosh, you're blushing too!" "I will be."

I throw my hands over my ears, trying to block out their voices. It doesn't work, I just keep hearing them. Everything they ever said to me, all the moments I spent with them, everything.

I try to scream to be louder than them but my voice just cracks. I couldn't make any noise. My breathing starts to catch, I was panicking.

"Shhhh...."

The voices begin to quiet and I slowly open my eyes.

"Shhhh...."

There he was, standing in front of me shushing the voices in my head. He always knew how to fix things...

But he wasn't here either. I didn't know where he was. I didn't know if he was even alive.

He continued to shush after the voices stopped.

I took my hands off my ears and stood up. He opened his arms for me and without hesitation, I ran to them.

A bright light flashed and I was suddenly weightless, freefalling in the sky.

He had disappeared again.

A gentle wind was blowing at me as I fell through the sky, it felt so peaceful... Like suddenly, I was lost with everyone else. I didn't feel alone even though it was just me.

Then the sky changed colors, quickly it was flashing from blue to white, to red, to green, and back to blue.

Everything freezes at once.

I jolt awake, accidentally shaking Ahri from my lap and waking Fletch as I jumped.

"What is it?" Fletch quickly asks, looking around the empty room.

I gently shake my head. "Nothing, I was just dreaming..."

"Oh," He says, laying his head back against the wall.

Ahri moves to sit against the wall beside me.

"How are you feeling?" Fletch asks, turning his head to face me.

I rest my head against the wall and I gently press my good hand against my nose. I wince as pain shoots through my entire face. Shit, that hurts.

"Not good." I sigh, closing my eyes. As I rest against the wall with my eyes closed, Fletch takes my bandaged hand in his.

"We'll find the others and get out of here soon... I'm sure Ahren has a plan too." He tells me, squeezing my hand reassuringly.

The sound of keys jingling outside the door distracts me.

The door opens and in walks a woman with what looks to be a first aid bag. The three of us stay by the wall waiting for her to give us orders.

"I'm Kelly, the doctor around here. James asked me to come and take a look at your nose..." She says, still standing in the doorway.

The door was wide open. We had a chance, we could get out right now. The plan was already formulating in my brain before I'd even gotten up.

I rubbed one of my fingers against Fletch's wrist, trying to let him in on what I was thinking. He squeezed my hand back to let me know he understood.

I stood up and Fletch followed my lead.

"I think it might be broken, it hurts like hell." I whined as I made my way towards her.

"Let me take a look, I can probably set it at least... I don't know..." She opens her first aid bag and pulls out a box of tools.

I scan over the selection for something I could use as a weapon.

We'd have to take her hostage if we wanted to get out of here. This was our chance.

She opens the box of tools and I spot a scalpel among them. I carefully watch as she digs through the box before pulling out a setting bar for my nose.

I ignore the pain as she fusses with setting my broken nose. It hurt like hell but I needed her to be distracted. I quietly slid my hand into the box of tools, pulling out the scalpel and carefully sliding it into my pocket.

She finished setting my nose and stepped back.

"How's it feel...?" She questioned.

I shrugged. "Better, I guess."

She sighs. "I'm not a real doctor... I was just a nurse before all of this. I flunked out of med school and settled with a career in assistance." She stares at the box of tools.

My heart starts pounding as I wait for her to say something about the missing scalpel. How could she have noticed that it was gone? Had she seen me take it?

She looks back up at me. "Oh well, none of that matters now and you're not here for my sob story."

Fletch chimes in. "Thanks for fixing her nose."

She turns to face him and that's when I strike. I pull the scalpel out of my pocket and wrap an arm around her neck. She squeals as I tighten my grip around her and show her the scalpel.

"Make any noise louder than a squeak and I'll slit your throat before anyone even hears you." I tell her, holding the scalpel against her neck.

She nods carefully, trying not to press her skin against the blade.

"Take us to the others from our group." I order.

I can feel her breathing continue to get faster and faster and I hold her. "I don't know who you're talking about."

"Your people kidnapped six of my people, take me to the other three." I explain, tightening my grip on her.

She squirms but nods quickly. "Okay okay, I was assigned two groups of newcomers in the quarantine cells. I can take you to the other one but I don't know if it's your friends."

"Go." I growl as I kick the back of her leg and we start moving.

I leave the room first with Fletch and Ahri in tow.

"Right." Kelly says as we leave the room.

"Fletch, go scout ahead and see if things are clear." I tell him. Fletch nods and moves in front of us, scouting the halls ahead for any of James' people. "Ahri, stay close to me."

We move down the halls, careful not to make too much noise. We get to another turn and Kelly tells me to go right again. "It's at the end of the hall."

Fletch peaks his head out and signals for us to wait. A few seconds later he beckons us into the hall and we follow him.

I see a door at the end of the hall and we make our way towards it. We're two doors away from it when a voice shouts from behind us. "Hey, what's going on here?"

"Fletch, get them out!" I swipe the keys out of Kelly's pocket and toss them at Fletch. He catches them and starts running down the hall.

The man at the end of the hall starts whistling as he pulls a gun.

"You pull that trigger and she dies!" I shout at him.

He laughs at me.

What was so funny? I was threatening someone's life, what did he find funny about that?

"You think I care about some bimbo with a nurse's degree? Sweety, we have real doctors here." He continues to laugh as he points the gun at me.

My hostage was useless.

I glance over my shoulder to see Fletch at the door, trying to jam a key into the lock when from one of the rooms flies out a woman who lunges at Fletch. She takes him down but he fights to get back up.

As I turn back around I see that the man at the end of the hall was now running at me. I throw Kelly at the ground and turn the scalpel, ready to defend myself.

The man reaches for the scalpel first but I move my arm too quickly for him. The sharp blade cuts right through his shirt and goes into his side with no more than a gentle shove from me.

He shouts in pain and stumbles back. I go to reach for his gun while he's distracted but someone else fires a gun and I quickly drop as I hear the gunshot go off in such a tight space.

The noise pierces through my skull, causing my ears to ring. I stumble a bit and shake my head, trying to clear the ringing noise.

I look up and see James standing at the end of the hall with his gun pointed at me.

I fall against the wall in defeat. It was over, we couldn't get out of this anymore.

"Sasha!" I hear someone shouting my name, it's muffled but I can tell it's my name.

I turn to look down the hall towards Fletch who's pinned to the ground. I look up at the door to see it flexing in and out. As the ringing finally cleared I could hear banging coming from the door.

"Sasha!"

It was Ahren.

They were just on the other side of that door. Ahren, Frankie, and Luna, so close yet so far.

I laid my head against the wall.

So far. So far. So far.
