Chapter 48 - Bastardly Return
I open my eyes, thinking that I'll only be disappointed by what I see. The voice just being another memory flashing through my mind. But it sounded so real...
...Because it was real.
"Jasper," I say again, this time seeing his face as I speak his name.
Fletch's arms loosen around me, as do mine on him.
There's a spark again, between Jasper and I. The spark that had been only mere warm embers for what must have been at least a month, was quickly igniting again.
Fletch whispers in my ear. "Go to him."
I can tell that it hurts him to say it, but I can also tell that he's sincere in his words.
The tears were still coming, though now I couldn't tell why I was crying. Only a minute ago it was because I was having a mental breakdown, but now I was feeling a billion different emotions.
Fletch drops his arms off me.
I hesitate a second, still loosely holding him. Then I drop my arms too and make my way to Jasper.
He opens his arms, pulling me into him as soon as he can. He holds me tight with one hand on the back of my head, tangling itself into my hair while his other arm is pushing against my back trying to bring me as close to him as he can get.
His voice is shaky, clearly emotional, as he whispers in my ear. "I missed you so much."
I don't say anything back but continue crying.
He pushes me away from him, still holding me. He reaches one hand up to brush my messy hair out of my face. Then he kisses me. I kiss him back.
It's a million times better than the first one. It's as if a match is dropped on our spark and it ignites into a bright fire.
The kiss is intense, I can feel the passion, the longing, the desperation, everything.
When we finally pull apart from each other, my tears are lessening but I still feel all of the emotion.
"Sasha?"
The voice was unplaced.
I'd heard it before, I knew I had... But I couldn't place it...
I look away from Jasper's piercing gaze.
"Holy sh..." I trail my sentence off as I stare disbelievingly at the sight before me.
My arms drop from Jasper, my body suddenly going weak. My jaw drops and I leave it hanging open. I continue to stare in wonder at the man standing before me. Under all the grime, facial hair, and... well hair in general, I knew him.
Then a distant conversation is repeating itself in my head.
"Is Graham... is he with you?" ... "Graham's fine." ... I furrow my brow. "Fine?"
He was fine. He was standing right here. In front of me. Somewhere I'd never thought I'd see him again.
"Graham?"
He nods.
I'm at a loss for words, or thoughts. I can't seem to process any of this.
Without even thinking, I run forward and wrap myself around him.
He wraps his arms around me in return.
"I thought you were..." I whisper, my words were muffled against his shoulder.
I feel him shake his head against my shoulder. "I survived. Somehow."
It was his touch. The same touch I'd grown to love at a time that felt like years ago now. Maybe it was years ago... maybe only months... Either way, it felt so far away.
After I lost him, the days just blurred together. Then Jasper and Allie showed up on the front steps of that small cabin in the woods. From the moment I laid eyes on him, even in his unconscious state, Jasper made the clock start ticking again.
"Where's my brother?!"
I let go of Graham and back away to see Luna frantically looking around.
I gulp hard as I too notice that he's not with them.
Ahren finally comes forward.
I missed him too. He'd been my right hand since day one and having him by my side again already felt good.
Although any good feeling is suddenly crushed as I take in the sight of Ahren. He's holding Vega's lifeless body bridal style in his arms.
Luna screams at the sight.
My blood curdles at the sound.
I watch as she rushes to Ahren, tears already starting to pour down her face.
"You!" She screams, shoving a finger in Ahren's face. "You promised me you'd take care of him!"
I can tell it's not easy for Ahren to hold back his emotions at the sight of her.
"I'm. sorry." He says quietly.
I see the tears welling in his eyes.
I try to shove all of my emotions and thoughts behind me as I move towards Luna.
I place a hand on her shoulder and go to speak but she spins around and starts screaming at me as well. "Don't you dare! You told me all of that 'Ahren will do anything to protect them' bull shit! If that was true, my brother would still be here! Instead, I'm stuck with this bastard," She throws a hand towards Ahren. "And you lying piece of shit!" She throws a finger in my face.
She turns back to face Ahren.
I don't touch her or say anything.
As I stand there and watch, she quickly raises a hand and slaps Ahren across the face. He doesn't flinch but I see a tear fall down his cheek.
Jeanine and Fletch hurry to Luna's side as she breaks down crying. They hold her tightly as she kicks and screams like a child being denied something by their mother. But her brother was dead.
They hold her and make their way into the station.
"Ahren, I'm so sorry..." I tell him.
Frankie hurries to his side, holding his arm.
"What happened out there?" I ask, looking between Frankie, Ahren, Jasper, and Graham.
Nobody says anything. Jasper looks at his feet. Ahren stares blankly ahead of him, a few tears still sliding down his cheeks. Frankie looks at Ahren's arm as she holds it.
And Graham... He swallows hard. His story would be a lot longer than theirs...
