Chapter 4 - Through The Window
I glanced out the window that sat above the sink in the kitchen, "What the-"
"Sasha!"
I swung around to see Ahren bolting into the house, slamming the door shut behind him. He panted leaning against it for a second before speaking again.
"There's too many!" He exclaimed, sliding a chair under the doorknob to keep it from twisting open.
"They're on freaking fire!" I shouted at him, throwing my arms in the air.
"We've gotta go, now!" Ahren ordered as he ran to find Catarina and Ahri.
I grabbed my bat from its spot next to the fireplace. "Allie!" I shouted, running into the back bedroom. I swung the door open and saw both of their heads turn towards me. "We've gotta go, there's a ton of fiery dead one's heading straight for the cabin." I explained.
She jumped up, hurrying to help Jasper. I grabbed my backpack and hurried out of the bedroom with them in tow. The others were waiting by the front door.
Ahren opened the door but immediately slammed it back shut when we saw that three burnt dead ones had already reached the front steps. I could hear the tins clinking together as the three made their way further up the steps and onto the porch.
"There's a window in the bedroom that we can climb out of!" I exclaimed, running back to the bedroom. I removed the screen panel and opened the window, "Who's first?"
Allie stepped forward, she swung her legs out the window so she was sitting on the sill before jumping off. "Ok, hand Ahri down!" She shouted up.
Catarina stepped forward with her.
She quickly began lowering Ahri down to Allie. Catarina climbed out next.
Ahren was guarding the doorway, "Oh shit, they're in the house!" He said before slamming the bedroom door shut and beginning to shove the dresser in front of it.
"Help Jasper down!" He shouted at me.
Jasper limped over to the window before I helped swing his legs out, he slid down and I heard him mutter a curse under his breath as he landed.
"Go, Sasha!" Ahren shouted. I didn't hesitate to hurl myself out the window. I immediately looked up to see him climbing down behind me. As soon as he hit the ground the window was flooded with dead ones fighting to get out. My mind raced as I watched the flames erupt in the window.
"Come on, we've gotta go right now." I said before jogging into the forest with the others in tow.
Ahren was next to me, "How far do you think Jasper can make it on his leg?" He asked.
I sighed glancing back at him, Allie had her arm wrapped around his waist and was trying to help him keep up.
"Not long..." I answered, looking in front of me again.
"We need to find someplace soon, it's cold and we need to regroup," Ahren explained.
I nodded and slowed my pace, "I'm gonna check on everyone. Keep us moving along, watch for a place to hold down for a bit." I dropped back next to Catarin and Ahri.
"You guys alright?" I asked. I knew I didn't need to ask in order to get an answer. It was obvious enough to me that they were not alright.
Catarina nodded but didn't say anything back. Ahri was lugging herself along next to Cat. "I'm tired." Ahri complained.
"I know, we'll rest soon." I said before moving back to Jasper and Allie.
"How's your leg?" I asked Jasper. Glancing in the direction of his wound. I could only imagine how bad it must have felt, especially after climbing out of the window and now walking on it.
He shrugged, "I've had worse."
"Really?" I questioned.
He and Allie both laughed, "That was a fun time."
I laughed at the idea of an injury worse than his gunshot, that must have been a really bad experience.
"Remind me to get that story from the two of you later." I said before jogging back up to Ahren. "Everyone's holding out, but I don't think we can go much further without causing complications in Jasper's leg."
He sighed, "There's really not much we can do unless we find someplace to hold up soon."
"We're in the middle of the woods, I don't even know how we got where we are." I replied, stepping over a tree that had fallen over.
"We've gotta find a road eventually." Ahren told me. I nodded, hoping that eventually would come quickly.
Eventually did not come quickly.
We walked for an hour before I finally made Ahren stop. At this point, Jasper was huffing more and more with each step we took.
Allie was giving Jasper a sip from the last bottle of water that we had. Supplies were limited seeing as we'd left in such a hurry. I'd managed to grab my backpack, but that was it.
"Don't drink it all." Ahren muttered at him. Allie returned his remark with a glare as she closed the bottle and handed it back to Cat. Jasper grabbed his sister's hand to calm her while Catarina made Ahren sit next to her.
"How long do you plan on us staying here?" Ahren asked, looking up at me.
"We just need to rest, Jasper's leg isn't going to heal if he keeps putting pressure on it like this. It could lead to permanent damage." I explained, looking between the boys.
"We still don't know how he was shot in the first place." Ahren reminded us, looking over at the pair sitting together.
"Ahren, please." Cat interrupted, placing her hand on his thigh while she stroked Ahri's hair with her other hand.
"We were with a group." Jasper started saying. His voice was even despite Ahren's rude tone. He didn't hesitate to tell the story at Ahren's demand. "They weren't very good people, but they kept us alive. We finally came up with a plan to split from them, we stole some supplies, food, water, some medication."
Bad people? Were they bad before all of this or was it an after effect?
"We made our break one day while we were supposed to be patrolling with a few others. We ran with the supplies, but they found us. They opened fire and a bullet caught my leg, I must have blacked out after we got away because the next thing I know, I'm waking up in that cabin seeing Sasha's face."
Everyone was silent for a moment, the only sound being the light whisper of the wind as it blew the trees around.
"We should keep moving." Ahren said as he got up, helping Catarina up then putting Ahri on his own back.
I walked over to Jasper and Allie, "Do you want me to carry him?" I offered.
Allie nodded, "That would be wonderful."
I bent down and wrapped my arm around Jasper's waist while he threw his arm over my shoulder. "On three," I said. He nodded before I counted up.
"One,"
"two,"
"three."
With that Jasper and I lifted at the same time and got him to his feet. "Thanks." He said before we started walking.
I nodded, "No problem."
We walked again for a while until we finally found a road. The six of us climbed out of the ditch and onto the road. I squinted to read a sign a few yards away from us.
We stumbled down towards it to get a better view. The sign finally came into sight and I read it aloud, "Welcome To Calgary. Population: 1,239,220." There was another message that had been scribbled onto the bottom of the sign in what appeared to be blood. "Taken by the dead"
