Chapter 16 - Deflection

Over the next few days, I couldn't stop thinking about Jonathan. Well, not really Jonathan but more about how he'd said he was looking for someone. I continued to think about who he could have been looking for.

Perhaps his wife had gone missing at some point through his journey and Jonathan was now devoting himself to finding her.

Or maybe it was his own child. What if he had a son or daughter somewhere out there that he was looking for?

But maybe it was just someone he knew. It could just be some stranger he'd met on his journey and was now hoping to find again someday.

To me, Jonathan was that stranger and I wondered if someday maybe I would be looking for him. Maybe someday Jonathan and I would cross paths once more. Maybe someday I could help him like he'd helped me.

"Sasha,"

"Yeah?"

Alison had come over to the rations center that I'd begun set up in the station to keep all of our supplies organized and accounted for. I was currently putting a box of protein bars onto a shelf.

"Jasper was in the train car, he asked me to have you go look at his leg."

I nodded as I blew some stray strands of hair off my face. "Okay. Would you mind getting the rest of these boxes on the shelf?"

"Sure."

With that, I walked away to find Jasper. I walked into the train car where he was sitting with his leg up on one of the seats.

"Hey, Sasha." He smiled at me.

"Hi. Allie said you wanted me to take a look at your leg."

Jasper nodded as I bent down beside him. He rolled his pant leg up.

I looked at the old wound, examining its condition.

"You know, I usually would buy you a drink before you I let you look at my legs." Jasper smiled down at me as I laughed.

His eyes seemed to sparkle as I looked up at him. There was something beautiful in them, a tint of humor, a dash of charm, I even thought I saw a small flash of fear as we continued looking into each other's eyes.

I found myself struggling for air while my hands were rested against his leg. The intensity of the gaze he was holding with me seemed to take the breath right out of my lungs, discarding it far away from me leaving my body weak with my heart racing.

He finally looked away, moving his eyes to my hands that were still on his leg. "Everything look good?"

I took my hands off of his leg, placing them in my own lap. "Yeah, it looks like you're gonna have one hell of a scar."

Jasper nodded. "Thanks for getting me all fixed up."

I nodded back in response.

"Do you think it'll impress any girls?"

I smiled. "It impresses me."

His smile beamed back at me, a playful look glimmering in his eyes once again. As I watched him now I saw something that I hadn't seen before. My heart was still racing as he continued to smile at me, his eyes holding another intense look that seemed to make me melt.

"Is there anything else you need?" I finally asked, doing the best I could to keep the words steady, unlike my heart rate.

Jasper just shook his head, still smiling.

"I should go see if Allie needs my help with the rations center..."

He nodded as I got up.

I started to leave the train car, stopping to throw one glance back at Jasper who was still watching me before I finally left.

Allie was standing by the rations center.

"You're smiling..."

I shook my head. "I am not."

My body had failed me. I was indeed smiling and I couldn't stop. No matter how hard I tried, the muscles in my mouth refused to stop smiling. By now I could also feel the heat starting to rise in my cheeks.

"Oh my gosh, you're blushing too!" Allie was practically gushing with excitement by now.

The nerves in my body had betrayed my mind.

"I have work to do." I said trying to deflect Allie's statements.

She rolled her eyes. "Fine, I'll just go grill Jasper about it." With that, she walked away to find her brother and question him about our encounter.

I decided to find Ahren and see if he had made any plans for supplies.

Ahri was sitting on a bench kicking her feet.

"Hey Ahri, do you know where Ahren is?"

She pointed towards one of the hallways. "He took Cat that way. He said he needed to talk to her about 'grown-up' things."

I nodded and started walking in the direction she'd pointed.

I didn't hear much of Ahren and Cat's conversation, only the end but that was enough to know what had happened.

Ahren's voice was calm and level. "I'm sorry, Cat but it's over."
