It was in the evening when all the anger and disappointment came rushing back to him.
Harry, Niall and Liam were sitting together on Louis' bed and played different card games that they knew, ignoring Zayn's occasional groans about him trying to concentrate. "We have a study room for that." Liam had said the first time Zayn had complained.
"Yeah." The raven haired had said. "But only study nerds like you use that room."
"Well, maybe swallow your bad boy pride and try it out if we bother you so much." Niall had snapped. Harry had giggled.
For the first time in weeks, Harry was feeling happy. He was so grateful for the support and distraction his friends gave him that he had even managed to just turn away without being close to tears when he saw Eleanor and Louis walking over the school grounds hand in hand.
"Harry, your turn." Niall interrupted Harry's thoughts.
"Oh." He said, quickly looking down at his cards and choosing which one to lay next.
"Ah, my cards are so bad." Liam complained.
The door opened and they all acknowledged Louis' arrival with a vague greeting before turning back to their cards.
"Harry, we need to talk." Louis said.
"Hm?" Harry looked up at him, half scared, half happy that he was Louis' only focus again. He had not realized how much he needed that until now.
"You know... Maybe we go outside." Louis hesitated.
Harry was about to stand up but Niall held him back. "No!" He turned to Louis. "Whatever you have to tell him you can also say in front of us."
Louis glared at him, particularly how he had not removed his hand from Harry's arm. "This is none of your business. This is between me and Harry."
"Well," Niall argued. "After you have ignored your 'best friend'," He made airquotes with his fingers, "for the last weeks and I have been there for him through your bullshit, this is very much my business."
Louis glared at him. "He is still my best friend and he doesn't need you."
Niall shrugged. "Let Harry be a judge of that."
Harry looked overwhelmed with the sudden attention. He had no idea what to say. Sure, he was still craving Louis' attention, but if Louis was not going to give him that, he would have to find a resort. "Umm..."
"Anyways, Hazza. This is not what I wanted to talk about." Louis looked back at his best friend. "You know, things have changed a bit."
"After you promised me they wouldn't." Harry said bitterly, feeling his heart cracking at the memory. But there was a bubble of hope blooming that Louis wanted to reverse it now.
"Yeah, well anyways. I want you to stop talking to Eleanor like that."
Just like that, Louis busted the bubble of hope. Instead, a surge of anger erupted in the pit of his stomach. "Really?" He stood up from the bed. "Eleanor is your biggest concern right now? And then her petty ways of dealing with critique?"
"It's hardly critique. You're insulting her." Louis argued.
"Is this the point here, Lou? Is this about Eleanor or about us?"
"Umm..." Louis frowned. "Umm, I- I don't know? Why does it matter? The point is that you should stop insulting my girlfriend."
There, again, it felt like Louis had rammed a knife through Harry's heart. Of course, it was clear that Eleanor was his girlfriend, but every time he said it, Louis cracked another piece of Harry's heart that he held without knowing it.
"Oh, have you ever thought about why I'm insulting her, genius?" Harry asked. "I thought I was still the most important person to you. You- you told me, remember?"
"Yeah, well... things change."
There, another slash through his heart. He took a step back. Louis already looked like he regretted his words and took a step closer.
"Haz." He said softly.
"Can't you see what she's doing to us?" Harry asked. "She's trying to rip us apart. Fuck, she's succeeding."
Louis looked lost for a few seconds, then his featured hardened. "Funny, she said the same thing about you."
Harry laughed in disbelief. "And you belief her? More than me?"
"Fuck, I don't know, okay?" Louis said, sounding incredibly frustrated. "You're so annoyingly clingy, do you realize that, Harry? You're always clinging to me! You're such a baby. Oh no, are you gonna start crying now? You see-"
"Stop it." Niall stood up and pulled the teary eyed Harry close, glaring at Louis. "And this is what you call best friend? Leave now."
"This is also my room-"
"I don't care." Niall was now petting the boy in his arms along the back. The younger boy was shaking, obviously trying to keep his sobs in. "You've done enough damage. OUT! Now!"
Louis glared at him. "Whatever. Zayn? Come on, we go."
Zayn looked startled to be addressed. He had just climbed off the bed to go to the bathroom discretely. He shrugged and followed the other boy outside.
Once the door had fallen closed again, Harry's sobs tumbled out of his mouth uncontrollably. "Oh, Harry." Niall sighed, sitting down on the bed with Harry still in his arms. He did not say anything else, knowing there were no words that could make the heartbroken boy feel better right now.
He just held him until the boy had fallen asleep from exhaustion.
A/N: HELP! Who should Niall date? I can't decide...
