Chapter 20

Devin stared at Jean, wide-eyed, for the longest time possible. She wasn't looking back but knew she was being watched. Devin's hands began to sweat slightly as she glanced back at the brothers then back to Jean. Jean was looking at one of the tanks with her hands linked behind her back, pretending that what she just said wasn't a big deal. Devin gulped slightly and opened her mouth. "You knew?" She asked, shocked. Jean glanced to the side at her with a small smile.

"Of course I knew."

"How?"

"Well for starters, I read your mind." Devin glared at her. "I did it when we were in the common room and we all heard Alex say 'I love you' for the first time out loud. You were thinking about how long it was going to last for, the pretending," she explained.

"But you didn't say anything."

"I wanted to see where it was going." She shrugged. "Besides I wanted you two to actually get together from the moment I met you both. I wasn't lying when I said I thought you two were already dating, but when I realised that you weren't, this whole thing made me excited to see where it was going to go."

"Wait, that was when we first brought Scott to the school."

"Yup."

"Why didn't you say anything to Scott?"

"He was so smug and sure that it wasn't real, I kinda wanted him to suffer. It only seemed fair after the blind date he set Alex up on." She did have a point. "Besides I knew he liked you from the beginning. I didn't have to read his mind to see how much he loved you. No one needs to be a mind reader to be able to see how desperately in love he was. It was almost painful to see that you couldn't see it."

"Was I the only one who didn't know?"

"Scott didn't know."

"Great, I'm just as smart as the little boy." Jean laughed at her.

"Why are you just as smart as me?" Scott came up next to them, making Devin jump. "Whoa there, jitters, I think you've had too much coffee."

"That's a lie," Devin responded.

"So, why are you just as smart as me?"

"No reason." Jean smiled. "But the fish competition was kinda a give-away," she told him with a sly smile.

"Alex started it!"

"Well, you're not wrong." Alex shrugged.

Soon enough Jean had managed to check off majority of the list of things to do. Although she left the theatre, coffee shop and park for the next day. Jean had almost brought out the entire book store, while Devin brought a couple of books and a few records from the record store. She also made plans for them both for the weekend.

It was going to be a long week.

Scott and Jean were walking in front, Scott holding most of her bags, while Alex and Devin were walking behind. Alex had grabbed her hand, warming it up with a small smirk on his face.

"Jean knew." Devin kept looking ahead.

"What?"

"She knew, the entire time."

"She didn't say anything..."

"Seems we had a fan."

"A fan?"

"She wanted us together since we brought Scott to the school."

"For that long?"

"Apparently."

"Unbelievable." He shook his head. "How long did she know for?" He looked down to her.

"Uhh..."

"Princess, how long did she know for?"

"When we were in the common room."

"But how did she find out?"

"I may have been thinking about it."

"About what?"

"How long it would last...I didn't know how it would end, I was just thinking about it."

"Did you want it to?" He looked back up in front of him, gulping. Of course, she didn't. Before it even properly started she didn't want it to end, it would have probably ended up being awkward for the two of them. She didn't want that because it would have meant that their friendship would have changed, they both would have. She couldn't live with that.

"No."

"No?"

"No." She shook her head, he looked back to her. "I didn't want it to end because I wanted it to be real." She looked down to her feet before glancing back up. "So, if it ended..."

"There wouldn't be a chance of it being real."

"Yeah."

"Just so you know, I was thinking about it as well." She looked up to him. "All the time, and every time I thought we were so to being caught out, I couldn't help but think about how that would have affected us. I was terrified of how it would have affected us."

"Why?"

"We are close. Closer than any two people could have been without being together-together, and I didn't want that to just disappear. I wanted to keep us...Well us. I didn't want to lose you."

"You wouldn't have lost me."

"But it would have been weird."

"Why would it have been weird?"

"Well, everyone knows how close we are, so if we broke up they would have expected it to be awkward. Which would have made it awkward."

"I wouldn't have let that happen."

"How do you know that?"

"Remember when we were first recruited, I told you that one day you'd fall in love with me?" He nodded. "Well, I never considered that I'd do the same. Even before I realised that I loved you, I wouldn't have let you go. You mean too much to me, even more so now that I actually realised what I feel for you."

"How would that have stopped it being awkward?" She stopped walking and looked at him. He noticed she'd stopped and looked at her, he moved to stand in front of her. "What?"

"Alex..." Devin started, her voice was soft and quiet. "If two people who loved each other the way we do, being awkward would be impossible. Because two people who truly loved each other wouldn't let anything get in the way of how they felt."

Alex stared at her for a minute in complete silence.

"Alex?" Devin waved a hand in front of his face. "I'm going to need you to respond." Alex smiled and cupped her face, bringing his face closer to hers. He pressed his lips against hers.

The bags in Devin's hands dropped to the ground as her hands gripped his shirt tightly, pulling him closer to her. She could definitely get used to Alex doing this. He pulled away slowly with a smile on his face, his forehead resting against hers.

"Maybe this started as just pretend, but if definitely ended as something real," he mumbled before pressing another kiss to her lips.

Alex stood up straighter, his hands still cupping her face. He leaned down to grab the bags that she dropped, he glanced up to her seeing the smile still on her face.

"I love you."

Devin looked at him as he stood up again. "I love you too." She took one of the bags and grabbed his hand again. They began walking back to the car as Jean and Scott waited in the back seat. Scott leaned over the seats and out the keys in the ignition, giving them both a thumb up.

"Thanks."

She raised an eyebrow. "For loving you?"

"For agreeing to the plan in the first place."

"Well, I didn't really have a choice."

"You kinda did." He looked back to her with a caught expression. "I didn't say to Scott that we were dating, he just asked me and I didn't say anything."

"I don't get it."

"Well, I didn't tell Scott that we were dating. I walked away from him before he asked me if it was you, I never gave him a yes or a no. But I panicked and asked you to pretend. That's why he was so shocked. I never told him, and I always tell him things."

"You could have picked anyone..."

"I wanted it to be you."

"Why?"

"Because I would have had to pretend around someone else. But around you, it was always real."

"Then I'm glad you asked." Devin nodded with a smile. "I'm really glad you asked."
