Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives

"Have you ever had a job before?"

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, trying to keep my face as calm and collected as possible as I tucked my hair behind my ears.

The interview leaned back in his seat impatiently, his beady brown eyes roaming me as he waited for an answer.

"A couple during the summer of my Freshman year. Although I don't have a whole lot of experience in waiting and food, I hope you'll give me the chance." He ran a few of his fingers through his thinning brown hair, his lips pursed as he sucked himself deeper into his own thoughts.

"I'll give you a trial run of two weeks and keep a tab on your progression through the fourteen days. If you show signs of progress, I will hire you on fully. If not, I'll have to let you go." I felt relief spread through my chest as I rose, pushing my chair back in beside me. We both met at the side of his large desk.

"Thank you, Mr. White, you won't regret this. I promise." I gave his hand one last shake and stepped out of his office and back into the long hallway that led back out to the diner. I slowed to a stop as I passed a table with a couple, a baby in a stroller a few feet away from the woman, being pushed back and forth in an attempt to try and sooth the him. I smiled a little and bowed my head as I headed for the exit, pulling my phone from my purse and checking for Cam's text.

He had promised to send a text my way when he finished his interview so I'd know where to meet him so he could pick me up. I hit his contact when I didn't find a text and leaned against the glass behind me.

"Cameron Mendoza isn't here right not, leave a message after that annoying ass tone and I'll give you a call back." I frowned, sighing as I waited for the beep allowing me to go on.

"Cam, it's Blake. You were supposed to text me ten minutes ago. Hope everything's okay. I love you, be careful. Bye." I sighed and headed for the discount clothing store next door, tucking my phone back into my purse.

"Hi, welcome to Destiny's Discounts, is there anything in particular you've come in for?" The bubbly blonde behind the counter perked up, flashing a grin my way.

"Maternity." I whispered, then spoke up, "Maternity clothes." She nodded and led me toward the back of the store without another word, humming quietly under her breath until we came upon three long rows of clothes hanging off racks.

"If you need anything else, feel free to ask us any questions." She leaned back on her heels with another blinding grin.

"Thank you. I will." I waited until she was gone to brush my fingers along the thin clothing, a small laugh leaving me when I saw the cute sayings and designs on them. I picked out a few and headed for the dressing room, slipping in and shutting the door gently before I could talk myself out of it and run out of the store.

It was barely there, but a small baby bump had begun to emerge and the shirts that Cam and I had gotten on our crazy shopping spree a couple months ago were so tight that they revealed the bump or drew the eye directly to it. Mom's idea had been to stock up on maternity clothes because I'd need them in the coming months, and as hesitant as I am about it, I know it's the right thing to do.

Luckily, this store actually sold some maternity clothes that didn't have any sort of design on them, but were just plain. They were perfect.

I tugged my shirt over my head and turned to reach for the first shirt, stopping when I caught my reflection out of the corner of my eye.

Even with my jeans on fairly high, I could see it protruding outside of my once entirely flat stomach. For years Mom and Cam had joked that I needed more meat on my body, I guess they were getting their wish now.

I successfully tried everything on without breaking down this time and sat down for a moment to clear my thoughts again.

It was still horrifying, knowing that there was a human being starting to grow inside of me. Cam's little human, my little human.

After a moment of sitting and staring at myself in the mirror, my hand resting on top of my stomach, I forced myself up and out of the dressing room. I carried the tops and a couple pairs of jeans up to the counter and set them down just as my phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Blake? Hey, I'm so sorry. The interview ran a little longer than we expected. I hope I didn't leave you hanging for too long." I could tell by the background noise that he must still be driving.

"It's fine, Cam. I. . . I just ran into the store next door. I'll stay here until you get here if it'll be easier for you." I heard him sigh.

"Yeah, babe. Stay there, I don't want you waiting outside by yourself on that street. I'll be there in about ten minutes." I nodded and said goodbye before handing the little bit of money my Mom had given me to the cashier. I headed back by the baby section of the store while I waited for Cam, running my fingers along the beautifully crafted cribs and strollers.

Cam wasn't budging from his idea of waiting until I was further along to get the crib. We didn't have the funds for it for one thing, and he wanted to have the entire crib set up based around whatever sex the baby was.

"Hey, Blake." Cam wrapped his arms around me from behind, scaring the crap out of me. I nearly whirled around and swatted him with my bag.

"You scared me, idiot!" I gasped, squirming out of his arms, "You don't just sneak up on people like that. You're lucky it wasn't Shay, she would have hit you with her purse repeatedly." He grinned, his eyes drifting from me to the line of cribs laid out in front of us.

"What are you doing?" He asked, the smile slowly starting to fade.

"Cam, I'm pregnant. I thought we already went over this." I gestured toward my stomach, giving him a worried look.

"No, no. What are you doing over here? Looking at all of this." He made a gesture with his hand, "You're only like two months along, right?"

"We're going to have to buy it eventually. I was just seeing what we had to choose from." I responded, crossing my arms over my chest. He sighed loudly and closed the gap between us, his hand cupping my cheek.

"Blake, babe, when it's time, I'm not buying the crib from a discount store. We're getting one brand new, perfect just like our child is going to be." I shook my head.

"I like discounts." I mumbled, "What's wrong with buying it here?"

"Let's go. We can discuss this later."

"Oh! They had this little craft store next door to the dealership. I went in and I found this." Cam put the car in park as we slowed to a stop in his driveway, reaching behind his seat until he pulled a bag back up and set it on my lap.

"What is it?" I asked, skeptical. He laughed, removing the plastic bag.

It was a scrapbook. The cover was a mixture of bright colors and baby toys around the border of it, a spot for a picture in the center.

"Cam-"

"I thought we could document everything. Like, all the sonograms and pictures, the results. Everything." I nodded, leaning over the clutch to hug him.

"It's perfect, Cam. Thank you." He kissed me before I pulled away and slipped it back into to the bag.

"I know you made all of those ones of us growing up. I'm sure it was just because you loved seeing how amazingly hot I was and still am." We laughed as we made our way up to Cam's front door.

The joking and calm mood was ripped from us the second we opened the door to find Mr. Mendoza and Jacob on the couch talking, Cam's mom rushing around the kitchen as if she were in a hurry.

"Let's go upstairs." I rubbed his arm gently, trying to push him before he could start anything.

"What are you doing here?" Cam growled. I wasn't sure whether he was talking to his father or brother; both looked in our direction.

"Cameron-" Mr. Mendoza began.

"What are you doing here?" Cam repeated, his voice eerily quiet.

"I needed to talk to you, son. Please." I felt Cam tense beside me, his upper lip curling back.

"Cam." I leaned into him, pushing his hand so it was on my stomach, "It's okay." He shut his eyes, his body relaxing a little.

"Let's go then." He kissed me quickly, shot his brother a murderous and warning glare, then followed his father down the hall.

I headed into the kitchen before Jacob could consider making his way over to me. Ms. Mendoza was hovering over the stove top, smiling sadly as the pasta boiled.

"How are you doing, sweetie?" She asked without glancing in my direction.

"Okay, I suppose. The morning sickness has started to fade." I muttered, keeping my voice low so Jacob couldn't hear us.

"Morning sickness?" Ms. Mendoza looked up from her assortment of food.

"I. . . Cam didn't tell you?" I blurted.

"Tell me what?" She shook her head, then let her eyes fall on my stomach, "Are you pregnant?" I took a startled step back and slammed into one of the kitchen chairs, my eyes wide.

"We're going over to your place for the night." Cam said, walking back into the room. He looked back and forth between his mother and me, then started to flush.

"Come on, Blake." He grabbed my arm and tugged me out of his house.

I waited until we had passed Mom and James in the living room watching a movie and stepped into my room to finally question him.

"You didn't tell her?" I asked.

"Blake, I-"

"Why?" I whispered, sitting on the edge of my bed.

"There's a lot of shit going on at home right now, Blake. Things you don't know or need to worry about. Just-"

"Cameron." I met his dark eyes, "What's going on?"

"My father's offered me a job and a place to live while we go to Stanford." He diverted the subject as quickly as possible. "Blake, we need it. If we can get a small condo, payed the first month, it'll help us get on our feet. It'll help with the baby an-"

"Cam, do you want that? Do you want to take something from him?" He shrugged and fell on to the bed beside me.

"I tried to talk to Mom about what Jacob did. She asked how I really got beaten so bad that night, so I confessed." He changed the subject again, "She defended him, Blake. Came up with every excuse possible to why he was innocent and we were imaging it." I shook my head.

"That's horrible, Cam. I'm sorry." He shrugged one shoulder, lacing his fingers through mine on my lap.

"So no, Blake. I haven't told her about the baby." He finished, staring ahead of us with a vacant and distant look in his eyes. I leaned against his shoulder until he hugged me against him, kissing the top of my head.

"I don't want to go to school tomorrow." I spoke up.

Who would have thought the words would have ever left my mouth?

"At least," He paused, looking down at me, "it'll take our minds off all of this for a few hours, right?"
