Chapter 2
After I got back to the shelter, I went straight to my room, threw myself onto my bed and cried. I cried and cried some more until I fell asleep. I dreamt of the all the past failures in my life. Thinking about all the, what ifs. I woke up at 5:00 in the morning couldn't go back to sleep. I stayed up thinking in deep thought. Like, what is the point of living if no one is going to acknowledge that you're even alive? I stayed up with that thought for the next couple of hours. I walked to school like a zombie, barely even awake. When I got there my classes went by in a blur. I couldn't think or focus on anything at all. It was very frustrating. When lunch came around, I went and sat in the same spot I sat everyday. On the floor in the corner of the cafeteria. I just sat there eating my chili mindlessly, not caring about the fact that it tasted like it had been sitting on the counter of the cafeteria for hours. I also didn't notice a guy come up and sit somewhat near beside me, at least, not until he came up to me and started talking. I barely noticed that he was there until he started shaking something in front of my face that I instantly recognized. My necklace! I quickly snatched it out of the guys hands, and then noticed what he looked like. He had short dark brown hair, cute dark brown eyes that you could get lost in. He was wearing faded light green cargo pants and wearing a Flash Gordon t-shirt. I had to pull myself back to reality. I snapped at him and almost yelled saying "where did you get this?!" It was my favorite necklace, it was in the shape of a dragon with its wings outstretched, it's body was silver and it's eyes were emerald. My first thought was that he took it from me somehow, that it was a prank for a good laugh for him and his friends. But he just looked at me and smiled, oh boy he had such a cute smile, and he said that it had fallen out of my backpack when I left school yesterday and he had tried to give it back to me but said that I had been too fast for him. I remembered what had happened the day before and started to get that heart stopping feeling again. Realizing something was wrong, he asked me what was wrong. I realized that my mouth had bent into a frown and I quickly went poker face. I wasn't showing my feelings to anyone ever again, especially not to any guy, ever. I quickly got up, and started walking away. He called out to me and asked what my name was. I don't know what was wrong with me, but I answered him Thalia, I said. My name is Thalia. Cool! He said. My name is Jake, Jake Collington. Cool I said unenthusiastically. "See you around?" Jake asked. Yea, I guess, I replied. Awesome! Jake said for almost all the cafeteria to hear. And you know what? I actually smiled.
