Part II: Chapter Two

I woke up to an abundance of people around me. I could hear the sirens of the ambulance as it rocked side to side, my body aching with each and every movement. The lights were too bright in here, and everyone was way too loud. I think my head is going to explode.

"Injecting the Morphine." Someone said.

Within a split second, a needle jabbed into my chest, my eyes bulging wide when I felt the narcotic flow throughout my body. The shit was strong, and all of the pain I was just feeling seemed to all fade away. It was almost as if I was on a cloud or something. A part of me wanted to speak, or to move, but I could tell I was strapped down. The thought of speaking seemed like too much of an effort right now.

"Sir, do not move."

The same woman who found me in the car pressed onto my legs more. I wanted to get up. I wanted to see if Reina was somewhere in this ambulance with me.

"Where.. Is she?" I tried to say, it more coming out as a whisper from the oxygen mask.

"Sir, the female that was with you was ejected from the car. We found her, and she's in the ambulance behind us."

Ejected from the car? How was she ejected from the car? Did I even check to make sure she was wearing her seatbelt? My body felt like falling asleep but my mind was exhilarated from the morphine. If Reina isn't okay I will never forgive myself. I don't remember the accident. I just remember that the light was green, and that the accident never should have happened.

"Hang in there." The woman said to me. "We'll be there soon."

----

When I woke up for the second time, everything was quiet. There was a gentle beeping from a monitor next to my bed, the lights were dim, and I saw my mom asleep in a chair in the corner of the room. My whole body hurt, especially my ribs.

"Mom." I said.

Her eyes immediately opened up, and when she noticed it was me speaking to her, tears began to fall onto her cheeks. I didn't think I was that hurt, but the way she was reacting was starting to scare me.

"Honey." She sobbed. "I'm so glad you're okay. Are you hurting? Do you need me to get a nurse?"

"Mom, I'm fine." I groaned. "Where's Reina? How is she?"
"She's stable for now." She replied. "She hasn't woken up yet, but the doctors say she should be up within the next twenty four hours. I've been between rooms all night."

"That's...good." I sigh, wincing from the headache that was starting. "She needs someone. She doesn't have anyone."

"I know, honey. But you're my son. If anything happened to you today I just-" She stopped herself and grabbed onto my hand. "I don't know what I'd do."

"What happened?" I asked. "Did I do something wrong?"
"You didn't do anything wrong, sweetheart. A tractor trailer ran a red light and hit the both of you from the side. There was nothing you could have done."

"I could have turned down the music." I said. "It was so loud. We were singing, and I was trying to be funny. Of all times for me to try and be funny... I just should have shut up and turned down the music."

"There was nothing you could have done." She said again. "Don't blame yourself."

"How did she get ejected from the car? Someone told me in the ambulance that they found her outside of the car."

"From what I was told, the force on impact sent her through the windshield. The doctor said she's suffering from head contusions, and also a broken arm. The both of you are lucky to even be alive right now. God was certainly on your side."
Before I could respond, a doctor knocked on the door and stepped in, white coat and all. He looked too young to be a doctor, with curly brown hair and blue eyes that looked so clear, it's almost as if you could see right through them.

"I see you're up." He smiled. "How are you feeling, Justin?"

"Everything hurts." I muttered, eyeing his clipboard skeptically.

"Well a broken leg and a cracked rib will do that to you." He chuckles. "I'll order some pain medication for you, but first I'm going to examine you."

The way that he laughed immediately annoyed me. He's acting as if the car accident wasn't a big deal, and as if i don't have a girlfriend somewhere in this hospital, who is suffering as well. I don't say anything about it as he shines a bright light into my eyes, and instructs me to follow it. Then, he tells me to press down onto his hands with my feet to test my reflexes. I seem to pass all of the tests because he clicks the light off and puts it back into the pocket of his white coat. Ever since rehab, I can't stand the color white.

"Do you know anything about the girl that was in the crash with me?" I questioned. "Is she up yet?"

"As a matter of fact..." He trails off, taking out his pen. "I'm her doctor as well. Reina is still sleeping, but we're hoping for her to be up shortly."

"Can I go see her please?"
He laughs again, which pisses me off.

"Not so soon, sport. Give it a day or two for you to rest. I will keep you updated as soon as I know anything more. For now, I'll put an order in for you to receive more pain medicine. Did the morphine seem to help last time?"

"Yeah. I guess so."

"Great. If you need anything more just let me know. I'll be back to check in on you in the morning."

"Thank you doctor." My mom says sweetly, flashing him a huge smile. "You've been very helpful."

As soon as he leaves, I close my eyes in agony from all of the pain. I want someone to be in the room with Reina when she wakes up. She has Casey, but I'm not even sure if she's been notified yet. Has anyone been told? My roommates? I want to ask my mom but I'm so tired. My body has grown so weak.

"Please go be with her." I tell her. "In case she wakes up. She shouldn't be alone."

I see her reluctantly agree, as she begins to gather her things. A nurse walks in with my pain medicine as soon as she stands up, and that's when I know that I'm about to go to sleep. This medicine seems to always knock me out.

"Just know that your father and I are praying for the both of you." She whispers closely to my ear. "I'll be back down a little later to visit, alright sweetie?"
With a kiss on my head, she clutches her purse and quietly leaves the room.

"She's sweet." The nurse says. "You're lucky to have a mom like that."
She opens up the bag and scans the plastic bracelet around my wrist, as I patiently await the pain medication.

"I know. My girlfriend doesn't have a mom like that." I reply. "That's why I want her to be with her right now instead of me."

"Well that's even more sweet." She giggles, blushing a little once she sees me staring at her. "So I'm guessing the doctor informed you of her status?"

"Well, kind of. I'm just worried. Today... or, yesterday... wasn't supposed to happen."

"Nobody plans for these things to happen." She soothes, grabbing hold of my IV. "This may burn a little going in, alright?"

She begins to inject the morphine, and as I'm waiting for the burning sensation to start, I silently send a prayer to God to just keep Reina safe. If he were to take anyone away today, take me. I've put that girl through more than enough hell than she deserves. I love that girl more than life itself. Today wasn't her fault. I should have seen the truck.

"All done." The nurse says. "Just hang in there, okay? I'm sure that she'll be fine, and, she will regain most of her memory soon. It's common in most patients that have head contusions."

The burning sensation was forming, taking over all of my head at once. The injection brings on the high like a tidal wave, it just hits your body in an instant. One minute you're sane, the next minute you're in a whole other dimension. I can understand why people become drug addicts. As soon as the words she said finally entered into my head, my heart stops beating it seems like, and I don't think it's from the medicine.

"Memory?" i ask. "What are you talking about?"

"Oh, you don't know?" She responds, clearly becoming flustered. It's almost as if she looks around the room for a way out. "I shouldn't be telling you anything, then. I'm sorry."

"Please tell me." I beg, grabbing her hand to stop her from moving. "I won't tell anyone you told me, I promise. You can't just tell me something like that and then stop."

I can see her contemplating whether or not she actually wants to tell me. Her eyes wander over to the door, realizing it's closed, before she lets out a sigh and places her hand on the edge of my bed.

"Your mom was there a few hours ago and she woke up." She said. "But, Reina seemed to have difficulty remembering who your mom was. It's very common in patients who are in car accidents, though. It may take a little bit for her memory to become restored."

"Does she know who I am?" I ask, my voice completely cracking from being on the verge of tears. "Did anyone ask her if she knew me?"

"Not yet." She whispered, clutching onto my hand a little tighter. "I'm sure she will, though. Don't worry."

The medicine was starting to put me to sleep. My eyes were becoming heavier, my grasp on the nurse's hand becoming weaker. She seemed to notice, because she made my bed become flatter, so that I was completely on my back.

"Try to get some sleep." She soothed. "She'll be okay. Have faith."
