Part II: Chapter Twenty Three

I can't believe that I'm minutes away from proposing to the love of my life.

I'm trying to clip another picture to these string lights but my hands are so sweaty that I can't seem to hang onto the clip for the life of me. Why am I so nervous? She's going to say yes, right?

"Let me help, man." Scott chuckles and grabs the clip and picture from me, securely placing it so that it won't fall. "You're really that nervous?"

I'm glad that he was able to help me because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get all of this done. He went to the store to pick up all of the supplies I needed while I picked out the ring. Casey made up some excuse to hang out with Reina after work to stall her in order for us to have more time. I'm grateful for that because we barely got everything finished.

"I mean, I kind of am." I shrug, wiping my palms on my pants. "She could say no."

An immediate laugh escapes Scott's mouth. "Justin..." he deadpans. "Are you kidding me? After she sees all of this there's no way she could say no."

I look around at the room to make sure everything is perfect. As soon as she opens the door there's a trail of rose petals and candles leading into the living room, where there's a huge heart made of rose petals that I'm standing in waiting for her. I put twinkling lights all over the living room with our pictures attached like I did for her before, only this time I'm hoping to get a better reaction.

"Alright man." Scott lets out a sigh and looks around the room. "I think everything's set. I'll get everything ready out back while you do your thing in here."

In the backyard we put more of the twinkling lights and we've got beer pong set up, a table of liquor and stuff to make mixed drinks with, and a dance floor with speakers to celebrate with our friends. That is, if she says yes.

"Oh, shit. They're on the street. I gotta go." He slips his phone into his pocket while my nerves go through the roof. "Man, I just want to say that I couldn't be prouder of you. I knew the moment you met Reina that she'd be in your life forever. It's just crazy that we're getting older and now you're about to join the married life with me. I just couldn't ask for a better best friend, and I know that-"

"Man, I'm really not trying to get emotional right now." I chuckle and blink away tears so that they won't fall. "Just get out of here, alright? I need to propose!"

"I love you, man." He brings me in for a hug before he exits out the back, leaving me alone to stand in the heart of roses.

Why am I so nervous that she won't say yes? It's because of our past and when she didn't remember me she wanted nothing to do with me. But she remembers now. She won't say no. Right? Fuck. The anticipation is killing me.

I start to play Marry Me by train through the speakers in the living room when I see Casey's car pull up through the window  and watch her step out. My hands are shaking as I clear my throat and adjust the cuffs of my dress shirt.

She looks beautiful. She's still in her outfit from work this morning. A black pencil dress that hugs her in all the right places. Her hair is straightened, makeup still perfectly applied. I don't know how she looks this good all damn day. I really don't. Is she seriously about to become my fiancé?

The door opens and I hold my breath when I hear her let out a gasp. I can't see her yet, and I'm starting to wonder where she is until I start to hear sniffling. Oh god.

She's going to say no.

She hates it.

Just like last time.

I feel the ring box bulge in my pocket and just feel like hiding away completely. I can't just stand here and listen to her cry, so I leave my spot in the middle of the heart of roses and round the corner to meet her.

Her hands are covering her face as she cries, and when she sees me she just smiles so widely and continues to cry. Not what I was expecting at all.

"You're happy?" I smile. "Those are happy tears? Babe, don't cry. Oh my god, come here."

I wrap my arms around her as the music is playing around us and she just cries into my chest, clutching onto my back for dear life. "I j-just can't believe t-this is happening!" She laughs and cries some more. "I've waited for this moment for s-so long."

The tears fall down my cheeks unexpectedly as I kiss the top of her hair because she has no idea just how happy she makes me. She has no idea how long I've waited to make her mine officially. I feel like I'm in a complete dream because I know she's going to say yes.

"I know." I clear my throat to keep myself from crying too and grab onto her hand. "Can you come with me to see what I have in there for you? Please?"

She lets me lead her into the living room and when she sees everything she just starts to cry more. "Oh my god." She shakes her head in disbelief, her hand covering her mouth. "Justin... it's..." she trails off, unable to find the words. "This is so beautiful."

I follow her as she looks at all the pictures of us attached to the string of lights, smiling at each one until I finally bring her to the heart of roses. Before when I pictured this moment I didn't think I'd have such a hard time. But standing here in front of the love of my life I find myself getting choked up.

"Reina..." I start, clearing my throat once more. She just keeps crying, which only makes me laugh. "Babe, I can't get through this if you keep crying."

"I know!" She giggles. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."

"I don't even know where to start Reina...Um, damn.  I've been waiting to get down on one knee for you since the moment I met you. I may not have known it at the time, but you are truly the love of my life. We've been through so much these past few years, but we've overcome it every single time. It's always been you. There's no one else that was made for me. I'm certain of that."

I grasp her hand and sink down onto one knee in front of her, her cries getting even more prominent than before.

"With that being said..." I shakily take the ring box out of my pocket and open it in front of her, a gasp escaping her mouth. "Reina, will you make me the happiest man on earth and spend the rest of your life with me?"

She sinks to her knees with me and can't even talk from crying. She just nods her head before I slip the ring on and pull her into me to kiss her. We sink onto the carpet together, the two of us blubbering like idiots.

"That was way harder than I thought it would be." I laugh and wipe the tears off of her cheeks. "You make me so nervous."

"You thought I'd say no?" She rolls her eyes and analyzes the ring in disbelief. I got her a rose gold princess cut. It sounds cliche, but she truly is a princess. It's the perfect ring for her.

"I just can't believe it!" She squeals with excitement. "Was that why Casey wanted to go shopping after I got off work? Did she know about this?"

"I don't know." I shrug with a sly smile. "Why don't you go out back and see?"

"What?" She gets up quickly from the carpet and goes through the kitchen to open up the back door. "Oh my god!" She laughs and throws it open. "What the hell are you guys doing here?"

I join her at the door and wrap my arms around her waist.

"Well before we answer, did you say yes?" Scott asks.

"Yes!" She shrieks, holding her hand up for all of them to see.

Scott turns the speakers on and music starts blaring as they all erupt into cheers. It was just our close friends. Casey, Scott, Mark and Colby. The people that have been there through it all. That's all we needed.

"Oh my god I KNEW something was up when you wanted to go shopping!" She heads over to Casey and wraps her in a hug. "I should've known!"

"You guys took long enough to come out here." Mark said with a mouthful of chips. "I thought you were having about to be married sex."

As usual, Mark earns an eye roll from all of us while Scott tugs Casey out onto the dance floor with him and pulls her close. I waste no time before I do the same with Reina. The smile on her face is priceless.

"I can't believe you did all of this." She pulls me closer and lets out a giggle. I've never seen her face light up this much. She's this happy because of me. I can't believe it.

"For you? I'd do anything."

After another half hour or so, Mark passes champagne glasses to all of us before he presses a pause to the music. "Alright!" He shouts, already slightly drunk. "I just want to say cheers to you guys. Reina, I'm glad you're not marrying the dick we met freshman year of college. I'm glad you changed him, and Justin, man you better treat this one right! She's put up with your ass all these years."

"You know, you really suck at speeches." I chuckle. "But cheers to being the luckiest guy on the planet."

"To Reina and Justin." Scott raises his glass followed by the rest of us before we all take a sip.

When my glass is almost halfway gone, Reina raises her glass to mine and clinks it once more. "Cheers to a lifetime of happiness, baby."

I lean in and place a gentle kiss to her lips. "Cheers, baby."
