Just eat the damn cupcake!
Dedicated to Peripateticism
Kageyama's heart clenched everytime he looked at Hinata's smiling face, bright eyes and wild hair. He didn't know it but it was the overwhelming love he felt for his orange haired boyfriend that made his heart clench so painfully. Over the course of the next few months he realised that he would like to be a lot more than just Hinata's boyfriend. The thought terrified him at first. What if Hinata said no? What if didn't want to spend the rest of his life with someone like him? What if he didn't mean as much to him as Hinata did to Kageyama? What if he wasn't ready? His mind had been plagued with those thoughts for quite some time. He could only build up some level of confidence when he talked about it to Suga.
"Kageyama, if he says no, then you should respect his and decision and try your best to understand him."
Just how long have you both been together? I know that the time doesn't have much to do with his strong your relationship is, but you both have been through so much. And all that time you both were by each other's side. If that doesn't say how much you mean to him, I don't know what does."
After months of questioning and second guessing himself, he was finally going to do it.
Today, Kageyama Tobio was going to ask Hinata Shoyo to marry him.
Hinata was special. He wanted to do something special for someone special like Hinata. Who was he kidding? Special? He wasn't special. How could he do something special? It was a special day for them. He had to make it special. He tried to make it special. What if it was not special enough? How would he know if it was special enough? What if Hinata didn't feel special? What if he didn't li-
"Kageyama!" He called out, breaking him out of his jumbled thoughts.
"Huh?"
"Any special reason for taking me out on a date today?" His voice coming out a little muffled because of the scarf wrapped around his mouth and neck. It was cold out.
"N-no nothing specific."
"I'm suspicious, you aren't planning anything are you?"
"Obviously not. Why would you think that?" He tried to keep the nervousness out of his voice. Had he figured it out? No no no! He had planned it out perfectly. Was he too obvious? Had he sai-
"No. It's just that we haven't been able to spend a lot of time together recently and our last date was two months back."
He looked over to Hinata to see him pouting and looking at the ground.
"So this is sudden." He mumbled.
"Oh."
He flashed a small sad smile at Kageyama. He felt bad for making Hinata feel this way. He had just been too preoccupied with his planning for today. That just made him more determined to get it right. He was going make sure that this would be a day Hinata wouldn't forget.
He reached over and took Hinata's gloved hand in his own. Hinata looked up at the sudden action.
"I'll make up for it today." He promised
He grinned at Kageyama, "Of course. Now let's go!"
Hinata was excited. He could see that, as he dragged him along the sidewalk. That was good, he didn't want him to be sad today. He and a whole day planned out for them.
As the day progressed, they visited many different places. Places that held meaning for the both of them. It was like a timeline of their own. They walked past the gymnasium where they had first met. Took a stroll in the park which held precious memories. Bought things for themselves from the mall. Walked along the trail which they used to frequent as high schoolers. Relaxed in the place where they had reconciled after a particularly bad fight. Had lunch in their favourite restaurant. Admired the scenery over the cliff on which they had shared their kiss.
Their special day was coming to an end. They had one more place left to visit. The café in which they'd had their first date. As they walked in, gusts of warm air rent with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and baked bread welcomed them.
"You go ahead and grab us a table." Kageyama told Hinata.
"But I want to pick too."
"Stop whining like a child."
"So mean Kageyama."
As he turned away and started walking towards the tables, Kageyama headed over to the counter. He'd already informed the staff working in the café and had asked them for a favour. He placed the order for their food and walked back towards where Hinata was sitting.
He sat himself down and stared across the table at Hinata. He was really going to do it. He was finally going to do it.
"So..."
"So?" Kageyama questioned.
"I had fun today."
"Mhm, me too."
"We should do this more often."
"Mhm."
"Kageyama-kun! You're barely saying a word, I'm the only one talking. Is something wrong?"
"What? No. Nothing is wrong." Who was he kidding, everything was wrong. It was too hot in the café, he was sweaty.
"I'm perfectly fine." He said.
"Ok." Though Hinata said ok, he didn't sound too sure.
A comfortable silence settled over them. He glanced out the window. The sun had set a while ago and the twinkling lights had come on. With barely any foot traffic and only a handful of cars passing by, there was a sense of calm all over.
Only if he could feel that calmness.
His attention was dragged away from the window when the waitress arrived with their food in hand.
If it wasn't obvious to him before, it was now. He was nervous. Very nervous. He had no idea as to what he was eating. He was just shoving food in his mouth. Plate to mouth. Plate to mouth. The flavours all mixed together, he was unable to tell them apart.
"Kageyama."
"Hmm?"
"That spoon must taste really good."
"Huh?" He was distracted. Very distracted.
"You've been bitting on that spoon for the past 2 minutes."
"What? Why didn't you tell me?"
"Not many times that I can see you make a fool of yourself."
"Some boyfriend you are." He grumbled.
Hinata grinned,"One of a kind."
"Whatever." He huffed.
They talked about each others day, talked about the jerk of a manager that Hinata had, laughed when talking about the stupid cat in their neighbourhood. When they finished eating, he let out a sigh of relief. Finally. He couldn't take it anymore.
The waitress from before approached their table and set down a cupcake.
"Ughh, that looks really delicious, but I'm too full to eat anything." Hinata groaned.
"You finish it off, Kageyama."
"Bu-"
"Anyways, yesterday I went over to Kenma's apartment and he was glued to the new videogame that he bought the other day and-"
"Just take a small bite, it's your favourite flavour after all."
"If I eat one more thing, I'm going to explode."
"Just o-"
"So he was stuck on that one level, and he was so frus-"
"Just eat the damn cupcake dumbass!" He snapped.
He could see that Hinata was startled by what he said.
"Ok ok." He said, holding his hands up in defence.
"What's gotten you all worked up?" He asked as he picked up the baked item.
"Nothing, just eat."
He carefully peeled away the paper and took a small bite. As he was chewing, he glanced at the cupcake.
"Kageyama, what do you know about people finding rings in cupcakes?"
Taking a deep breath and building up all the courage that he had, he began.
"Hinata, y-you mean so much to me. And I love you. I might not always show it or say it, but you do. We have so many memories together, good and bad. I want us to make so many more of those happy memories. I want us to make them as husbands. So, will you marry me Hinata Shouyou?"
By the end of it, Hinata was smilling broadly.
"You didn't have to do all this Kageyama-kun." He said, gesturing to the half eaten cupcake.
"But it's your favourite flavour and this is where we came for our first date. And I wanted it to be perfect."
"It would've been perfect even if we had been lying on the couch in our living room watching a shitty soap opera. I would've said yes anyways."
"B-but I wanted it to be special. And perfect."
Wait, what?! He would've said yes?
"Yo-" He started but was interrupted.
Hinata took out a box of his own and popped it open, "Stupidyama, it would've been okay because I was going to ask you the same question."
He stared at the box in Hinata's hands. It took him a while to process what he had said. If Hinata wanted to ask him the same question, did that mean he wanted to-
"Marry me?" Hinata asked, flashing him a smile.
"Uh, I-i-"
"You make sure that I get the best cupcakes after all."
"Huh?"
"Kageyama-kun, seeing as we both asked each other the same question, we want the same thing."
He let out a sigh when he got no response from his soon to be ex-boyfriend.
Kageyama was ecstatic. Hinata was going to marry him. Hinata was going to marry him.
"Kageyama! Snap out of it, I said yes."
Those words seemed to solidify it. With words he forgot all about his nervousness and doubts.
He smiled a real smile, "Yes, yes me too."
They both were obviously very happy. Anyone would be able to see the hearts floating around in their eyes. After taking the ring out and cleaning it, both of them were wearing their rings. Just as Hinata was teasing him about the cupcake, the waitress came over to clear their plates.
"That's a beautiful ring sir." She told Kageyama before leaving.
"It has to be, since I bought it and all."
"My choice is even better." Kageyama shot back indignantly.
"Certainly not since I spent a lot more time picking it out."
"How do you know how much time I took and if it more than yours?"
"Well, I even got Tsukkishima to help me!"
"Ha! So you didn't pick it out on your own. That makes mine superior."
"That doesn't matter!"
"Yes it does."
"It doesn't."
"Does."
"Aaargh! Mine looks better!" He said, pointing to the silver ring with a blue stone set in the center.
Gesturing toward the band on Hinata's finger Kageyama said, "Mine actually means something."
It was a simple silver ring with swirling lines of black and the numbers 9 and 10 engraved on the inside.
"So does mine!"
"Really?"
"What? You want to fight?" Hinata said, holding up his hands.
Just as he was about to respond, he heard a slight cough beside him. Turning his head around, he saw that it was their waitress again.
"Your bill." She placed the piece of paper on their table and turned around.
"Thank you." Kageyama replied.
She looked back with a small smile and walked away.
He looked back towards Hinata as silence enveloped them. They continued to stare at each other before Hinata burst out laughing. He finally managed to stop and looked at Kageyama with pure joy in his eyes.
"I love you Kageyama."
A vibrant red blush painted his cheeks at those words. Even after all these years Hinata's words managed to affect him like this.
But he could always blame it on the cold.
He looked at their intertwined hands resting on the table.
"Just finish your cupcake, dumbass."
I have no idea what the hell I was thinking when I came up with this idea.
Gomen if it is too cringey and unoriginal.
