Better Doctors
Blaine woke with the pleasant confusion that comes from a very hard sleep or a very sedated one. He looked around the room trying to find the any signs of familiarity to orient him to where he was. The nearly platinum blond hair of the kid sitting at the other bed staring at him was all it took to bring him back.
"You were out for a long time." Hezekiah said. "I didn't think you were going to wake up."
"What time is it?" Blaine said, his face sore and swollen.
"Time doesn't really matter to me. You know, it's nothing more than a social-"
"What time is it!" Blaine screamed.
The kid jumped and immediately ran out of the room without a word. Blaine attempted to sit up but quickly, felt his wrists and ankles tightly secured to the bed. He was able to move his head enough to see that they had left his now muddy and somewhat bloody scrubs on and just tied him to his bed for the night.
"I have to piss." Blaine yelled at the open door.
A short but muscular male nurse walked slowly through the door with a urinal in his hand. Without saying a word he pulled down Blaine's pants and put the urinal in place.
"Are you kidding me? Just let me up."
"Not gonna happen bud. Now pee or I walk out the door and you can piss the bed."
Blaine tried to clear his groggy mind and attempted to relieve the pressure.
"Who ordered restraints for this patient to point where they can't even go to the bathroom?" A familiar voice said sternly from outside the door.
The nurse stiffened, quickly removed the urinal and pulled Blaine's pants back up.
"Um," the nurse started, hesitating, "Dr. Parker said that until he gives the OK, no one is to remove this patient's restraints, sir."
"You do realize this patient has rights, don't you?" The man said as he walked in, towering over the nurse.
"Sir, this patient tried to kill one of the nurses last night." The nurse said nervously.
"No he didn't. I saw that nurse and she doesn't have a bruise on her. Rather feeble attempt at murder if that were the case."
"Sir, I'm just following Dr. Parkers order."
"You are a nurse. You don't follow orders that violate patient rights. Now leave and do not interact with this patient again."
"Yes sir," he said, scurrying past the tall doctor. "Are you a new doctor here?"
"I'm visiting my patient here, but I know what you are really asking. Go tell your boss that Dr. Latourney told you to get the hell out of here."
Blaine could hear the footsteps running down the hallway towards the nurses station, obviously to tell his supervisor what just happened. Dr. Latourney, Blaine's savior started to untie the restraints.
"Thank God it's you." Blaine said, and he slowly began to move his limbs. Not only had he been restrained in one position all night, but the bruises and road rash smattered across his body were letting him know they existed.
"Don't you have to go to the bathroom, Blaine?" Dr. Latourney asked as if they weren't in the middle of a psych hospital.
Suddenly the fullness of his bladder returned to the forefront of his mind and Blaine quickly walked to the bathroom.
"I fucked up." Blaine said from the bathroom. "How did you know I was here?"
"A friend told me you were supposed to come here for an assessment, but when I checked everything out, your name wasn't on there. A very similar name was and as I looked into it, nothing was making sense. So, I came here late last night and got to watch a very interesting show."
"That was you? How did I look? Was it graceful?" Blaine tried to grin, but was quickly reminded of the gravel that had recently been pushed into his face.
"It looked way more painful than graceful. You doing OK?"
"Now that you're here, I have at least some hope that I won't be stuck here forever. Can we leave now?"
"Blaine, you choked out a nurse. That makes it a little more complicated. I would have gotten you out last night, but somehow you always seem to lack the patience that is required to make things easier." Dr. Latourney shook his head.
"They told me they were going to keep me locked in here until I signed some papers saying I had schizophrenia before the trial. They put me on an M-1 hold and made it so I couldn't even use my phone or call anyone to come help. I honestly didn't think I had any chance of getting out of here and I had no idea that you even knew I was here." Blaine paused. "Who told you I was here?"
"A mutual friend, but I will have to explain that later. I will be getting you out of here right now, but since you choked out that little girl, it's going to be a little different than I wanted."
"I don't even know how to express how confused I am right now," Blaine said, sitting back down on the bed, "and she was not a little girl."
"She's tiny, Blaine. You probably could have thrown a blanket over her head and made your escape." Dr. Latourney said, starting to laugh. "Now let's see how this goes, this may or may not work. Get up and follow me."
Blaine did as he was told, as he knew he had no other options now. He followed his blued eyed savior out the door. He felt the stares of every nurse behind the glass following them as they walked past, towards the locked exit, but not a single nurse approached.
"Where are you taking him?" Blaine recognized the doctor as the short, chubby Dr. Parker.
"I'm taking him for an evaluation." Dr. Latourney said without stopping.
"But we have rooms for that here." Dr. Parker said, suddenly appearing very flustered.
Dr. Latourney stopped and turned to stare down at Dr. Parker. "Do you know what I just caught one of your nurses doing. You know the one. The one that looks like a fucking hobbit."
Blaine had never heard Dr. Latourney cuss ever and definitely had never heard him use this tone of voice. He knew that he had served in the Army, but know he was wondering if he had been a Drill Sergeant. Not many people were capably of manifesting that kind of intimidation with so few words.
"That patient just attacked a nurse. We can't let him leave the unit. He's not even supposed to be out of restraints."
"I am well aware of what my patient is being accused of, and look at him. Does he look like he needs restraints. Are you truly not aware of my patients rights? Or do you just not care?"
Both of them looked directly at Blaine standing quietly, hands behind his back.
"It's not your call, Doctor..." he looked at his name tag, "Latourney."
"I'm leaving with my patient, and if you have a problem with it, I suggest you call your boss."
"Dr. Williams is already well aware of the situation and we are in agreement that he is not to leave or be released from restraints." Dr. Parker said, his tone changing as his confidence showed.
"I said your boss. Call Dr. Cerantos." Dr. Latourney said and then turned to walk again.
Dr. Parker paled at the mention of that name, but remained steadfast. He stepped in between Dr. Latourney and the exit. "He is not leaving." He said, raising his voice loud enough the rest of the unit could hear.
"Let's try another tact." Dr. Latourney said. "Tell me what this patient's name is?"
"What?" Dr. Parker asked, looking confused. Suddenly his shoulder sank.
"This patient, that you are holding here on an M-1," Dr. Latourney said slowly and meticulously sounding out every syllable. He pointed at Blaine, "What is his name?"
"Bronswick." Dr. Parker finally stuttered.
"That's good." Dr. Latourney said, in such a condescending way that Blaine almost momentarily felt bad for this guy. "What is his first name that you wrote on that legal document that took this man's federally ensured rights away? What is his name?" Blaine could almost hear a John Malkovich cadence to the question.
Blaine could see Dr. Parker's hand's shaking.
"If I were a lawyer, which I'm not, but if I were, I would say that illegally holding someone here, denying them the right to call anyone for help, and also changing your paperwork to a different name to stop anyone from contacting him, would go beyond just effecting your job or your medical license. That's federal prison time, if I were to guess." Dr. Latourney was speaking so quickly and with such intensity, that the previously gathered nurses immediately started to find other things to do.
"You have exactly 1 second to get out of our way before I put you on the ground." Dr. Latourney tone had again changed, and he said the threat in such a soft and calm manner that anyone watching would have no idea.
Dr. Parker nearly stumbled as he backed away and opened the door to the glassed in nurses station.
"This way Blaine." Dr. Latourney said softly. Blaine watched the back of Dr. Parker flinch at the use of Blaine's real name. Blaine began to grin as he followed Dr. Latourney out of the unit.
