The show is based on the book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.

 I was excited for this show when I first heard about it. I had read all of The Mortal Instruments series, and was hoping for a good show about the book.

 This show doesn't stick exactly to the books. The first two seasons were a sort of mash-up of the first three books, and the third season started going into the second half of the book series. It's really more of a loose adaption of the books.

 I personally didn't think the first season was that great, but I stuck with it, and I think the show improved greatly in its second and third seasons. This is a show I would recommend of you're a fan of the books or if you're just looking for a supernatural drama to watch. If you can get through the first season, the show gets better after that.
