Chapter 29
Chapter 29
Angelina's Point of View:
“Say it again,” Drew said. We were sitting on the couch in the T.V room, cuddling.
“I love you,” I said again, smiling.
“I love you too, girlfriend,” he said and I grinned. I’ll never get tired of hearing that. I still can’t believe this happened. I didn’t think he’ll ever admit anything like that to me. Now that he did, I felt extremely happy.
We were silent for a while, lost in our thoughts. He broke the silence and almost reluctantly said, “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” I replied, looking into his eyes curiously.
He opened and closed his mouth several time, not knowing what to say.
“I-I want to know more about your parents,” he finally said, looking at me intently. I dropped my gaze and felt a pang in my chest.
I remembered Dan’s words when I talked to him a few days ago. He told me to trust his boys and talk to them. I knew I was going to tell them at some point and Drew – my boyfriend – is the one I’d like to tell first.
“Are you sure you want to hear their story? It’s long and sad,” I warned him.
“Yes,” he said firmly and I sighed. I cringed slightly when I thought about how much I was going to cry. I hated crying in front of people but I knew that this story will make me cry. Only the thought of it made me cry.
“Where should I start?” I wondered aloud.
“The beginning,” he offered. After a moment of collecting my thoughts, I started with the painful story that will always remain carved in my heart and memory.
“My parents met in college. They fell in love and when they both graduated, they got married. It was so perfect it was almost surreal. Their wedding was beautiful and both of their families loved them and wanted them to be together. A year after they got married, I was born. My parents used to love me so much. My childhood was every kid’s dream! I remember the beautiful times I spent with my parents when they were happy together.”
I remembered my parents telling me their story over and over again and I would always wish to have a love story like that someday. Now, after all that has happened, I don’t want a story that ends like theirs. I took a deep breath before starting the sad part.
“When I was six, I witnessed their first fight. I heard them screaming so I ran downstairs where they were fighting. I can remember that day like it happened yesterday. My dad was angry and hurt while my mom was screaming angrily at him. I had no idea what was going on at first but when I noticed my mom’s suitcase next to the front door, I understood.”
I had a flashback of that day as I was telling him the story and I wished I hadn’t been that mature back then because I would’ve spared myself some of the pain.
“I’m leaving,” my mom said to my father, her eyes blazing with anger.
She turned her back to us and picked up her brown suitcase that matched the brown summer dress.
“Mommy!” I cried out but for the first time ever, she didn’t turn around nor reply. She kept on walking away from us. “Mommy, don’t leave me! Mommy, please stay!”
She left without looking back and now that I think of it, I wonder how she could walk away from her six year old daughter who was crying and begging her to stay.
“Daddy?” I said quietly wanting him to comfort me and tell me that she will come back. But he didn’t.
Instead, he turned around and left as well.
“She used to call me ‘Angel’,” I murmured. “I haven’t seen her ever since she left.”
“I’m so sorry,” Drew said, wiping my tears away and hugging me tightly.
“I’ll stop calling you that,” he whispered into my hair.
“No,” I replied, pulling away slightly to look into his eyes “I like it when you call me that.”
He smiled softly at me before leaning in to kiss me.
“Thank you for telling me this,” he whispered when he pulled away.
“Thank you for listening,” I answered, feeling lighter and – if possible – less hurt now that I had finally told him.
In the silence, I heard my phone beep. I grabbed it from the tabled and opened the text I got. I looked at the top of my phone and saw that the text was from my dad. I was both happy and confused as I quickly pressed the ‘show’ button, eager to read it.
We’re going to the beach house on Saturday.
That’s the only thing my dad and I still do. He takes me to the beach house every summer because I love the beach. But I barely see him there. We don’t spend time together. He stays in his room most of the time, working and drinking.
When we’re at the beach house, I try to ignore him as much as possible and have fun at the beach. I meet people there every summer and we hang out during the week I spend there.
I was happy that we were going to the beach house even though I won’t see him much but it’s better than nothing, right?
He might not talk to me but I’m his daughter and he’s my father. I love him and I’m sure he doesn’t hate me as much as it seems.
Okay. See you then.
I put my phone back on the table after replying to his text. Drew wrapped his arms around me again, making me smile.
“Who was that?” he asked.
“My dad,” I replied, looking into his now surprised eyes. “We’re going to the beach house on Saturday.”
“The beach house?” He echoed.
“Yeah, that’s the only thing my dad and I still do together even though he spends most of his time there working.”
“He does?” Drew asked and his eyes filled with anger, forgetting about the beach house.
I nodded my head thinking of all the previous summers there. Drew’s fists clenched and I immediately tried to calm him. I lifted my hand up to his cheek forcing him to look down at me. When he finally did, I spoke.
“It’s okay,” I said calmly “I’m used to it.”
“But it shouldn’t be like that!” He said angrily “You don’t deserve this!”
I smiled wryly. “C’est la vie,” I answered in French, finding this expression fitting.
He sighed. “I’m sorry you have to go through this.”
I lifted my face and kissed him. He quickly responded and I smiled against his lips as my heart started beating wildly in my chest.
“Uh…” I heard someone’s voice and I immediately pulled away. My eyes met Liam’s and then Lee’s. I quickly glanced at the clock and was shocked to see how fast the time had passed. It was late.
I cleared my throat and dropped my gaze, feeling my cheeks heat up. Awkward silence settled upon us and I felt even more embarrassed.
“Ha!” Lee suddenly exclaimed “Ten bucks!”
Liam grunted and gave his brother a ten dollar bill. Drew and I gave them incredulous looks.
“Couldn’t you wait till the beginning of the next month?” Liam grumbled.
“You guys bet on us?” Drew asked his brothers, stunned.
“Yep and I won!” Lee said triumphantly “I told you they’ll get together before August!”
Liam scowled and crossed his arms over his chest. Drew and I laughed at them and I couldn’t help but think how they both knew that we were going to get together sooner or later. It made me happy because they obviously know us so well.
“How were your dates?” I asked the brothers.
As if on cue, they both grinned widely.
“Mia loved it! We had the most romantic dinner in history of romantic dinners. And that dress looked perfect on her!” Lee rambled and I smiled at his adorable reaction.
“My date was even better!” Liam said confidently “She absolutely loved her new skateboard! And we laughed so much during the movie and dinner was perfect!”
“You made fun of everything in the movie didn’t you?” I asked, smirking.
“You know us too well,” Liam replied, laughing. I was happy that my best friends were dating Lee and Liam. They were perfect for them and I trusted them both.
“What about you two?” Liam asked, waggling his eyebrows suggestively “We leave you together at home for a few hours and we come to find you like that?”
I chuckled quietly and shrugged my shoulders, ignoring the way my heart picked up as I remembered what happened earlier.
“The heart wants what the heart wants,” Drew said dramatically and I burst out laughing.
“Hey! I was being romantic! You shouldn’t laugh!” He said, feigning hurt.
I patted the top of his head and laughed at him again.
“I’m going to sleep,” I said a few minutes later, feeling tired.
“No goodnight kiss?” Drew pouted.
I rolled my eyes at him but smiled nonetheless. I pecked his cheek and started walking out of the room.
“That’s not fair!” He said “I want a real kiss!”
I smirked and sprinted up to my room before he could catch me. I shut the door and locked it, laughing to myself.
I changed into my pajama shorts and top, brushed my teeth, and crawled into my bed. Just as I was about to turn off the lights, I heard my window door open and Drew came in.
I noticed that he changed into comfy pants but he was still wearing his white T-shirt. He closed the glass door behind him and I raised an eyebrow at him.
“I want a proper kiss,” he said stubbornly.
“I’m too tired,” I whined and closed my eyes, even though I was still in a sitting position. I secretly wanted to kiss him but I enjoyed teasing him too much. He looked so adorable when he was being stubborn.
“No you’re not,” he said and I jumped when his voice sounded so close to my ear.
Suddenly, his soft lips met mine and he kissed me passionately. I kissed him back, putting into that kiss all the feelings that I couldn’t put into words.
“That’s much better,” he breathed out when we pulled away, both of us breathless.
I nodded my head still feeling a bit woozy. Moments of silence passed and we just stared into each other’s eyes. I was able to read that emotion that has been in his eyes for a while every time he looks at me. The love I found there made me feel warm on the inside and I knew that my eyes reflected my emotions clearly.
“Goodnight,” he finally said as he stood up and started walking back to the window. I held his arm – the one without the white cast on it – and he turned to give me a questioning look.
“C-can you stay?” I asked looking down at my bed, suddenly finding the blue bed sheets extremely interesting. A warm blush spread across my cheeks as I waited for his answer.
I finally mustered up the courage to look up at him and when I did, his blue eyes softened and he nodded.
I smiled and moved to the left, giving him some room to sleep. He took his white shirt off and my eyes widened.
“W-what are you doing?” I asked, finding it hard not to stare at his bare chest.
He smirked at me and leaned down to kiss me.
“Is it okay with you if I sleep with no shirt on?” He asked with a faint smirk still on his lips.
“U-uh s-sure,” I stammered, blushing and he chuckled.
He chuckled and kissed my red cheeks. “You’re cute.”
“I know,” I said arrogantly and he rolled his eyes at me.
I turned off the lights and we both lay down on the bed, side by side. Suddenly, Drew wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me closer to him. I hugged him and felt my eyes droop.
“Sweet dreams,” I heard his voice say and I only managed to let out a soft, content sigh before I was asleep.
