Chapter 26

Angelina's Point of View:

“Hey.” I turned around and saw Lee rubbing his sleepy eyes.

“Hey,” I replied, giving him a small smile. Liam stirred and his eyes opened. He mumbled something incoherent I smiled at him.

One look at their brother and the sad expression was back on their faces. I sighed quietly as I gazed at Drew too.

Come on, I silently begged, wake up.

“What’s that?” Liam asked and I followed his gaze which landed on the bag of food I bought earlier.

“Oh I bought breakfast,” I said as I stood up to get the bag. I handed them a sandwich and a box of orange juice each.

“Thanks,” they said and we all ate our food silently. I barely ate half of my sandwich because I wasn’t hungry. Worry and fear didn’t help.

My gaze snapped to the door when I heard it open. Dr. Parker walked in, a small smile on his face.

“How are you today?” He asked the brothers. They gazed at their brother and back at Dr. Parker with identical sad faces. Dr. Parker nodded slightly and went to check the tubes on Drew’s arms.

“When will he wake up?” Liam asked.

Dr. Parker sighed. “He should’ve been awake by now. If he didn’t wake up by tonight…”

“What will happen if he didn’t?” Lee asked.

“I don’t know,” Dr. Parker said “He might wake up again in a couple of weeks, maybe months. Or he might not…”

I inhaled sharply and tears welled up in my eyes.

He might not wake up.

I won’t be able to see his blue eyes again. I won’t be able to hear him tease me. I won’t be able to watch him frowning at me every time I do something wrong.

My thoughts were cut short when Liam’s hand rested on my shoulder.

“He’ll be okay,” he said softly and wiped my tears away. Only then I noticed that I was crying. I nodded, somehow believing him.

He’s going to wake up, I thought.

“You are going to wake up,” I then whispered to the boy lying on the bed.

We sat in silence; the only sound in the room was his heartbeat. The bags with the twins’ gifts were in the corner of the room along with my purse.

The minutes were passing slowly and Drew was still the same. I had a terrible headache because of all the crying and thinking.

“Angelina, go home, rest for a bit. You look so tired.” Lee tried to convince me but I wasn’t leaving.

“I’ll go tonight, if he didn’t wake up,” I said but somehow I had a feeling that he would wake up. I didn’t get my hopes up though because I don’t want to feel ten times worse if he didn’t wake up.

Lee sighed but he didn’t argue anymore because he knows I’m stubborn and he won’t be able to convince me.

Hours passed and it was now 2:00p.m. The hope I was feeling was slowly decreasing with every passing minute.

“We’re gonna go get lunch,” Liam said and I nodded absentmindedly.

Lee and Liam walked out of the room and I remained in the same position. I didn’t know what I could do to make things better.

I closed my eyes and exhaled. I was really tired and the headache was so painful. I curled up on the chair, feeling exhausted but I didn’t want to sleep in case he woke up.

I wasn’t going to sleep, I told myself, I’ll just rest for a bit.

Suddenly, I felt a warm hand on my cheek. I leaned closer to the warmth of the hand and when my brain registered what was happening, my eyes flew open.

I gazed at Drew and saw his blue eyes staring back at me. My heart started pounding faster as I stared at the boy who was now awake.

Was this a dream? I thought at first. When I noticed that it was all real, my eyes widened and I jumped out of my chair.

I opened my mouth but I wasn’t able to talk. I stood next to his bed pointing a finger at him with my other hand over my mouth. I blinked twice before turning to the right and running to the door. I opened the door a bit too fast and hit my head. I stumbled backwards and rubbed my forehead, wincing slightly, before running outside and calling the nurse.

Seconds later, Dr. Parker, two nurses, and I were running to Drew’s room.

When we got there, we all stopped to gawk at the boy who was now laughing. For a second, I thought he was going crazy. The nurses and Dr. Parker looked confused.

“You should’ve seen your face!” He exclaimed.

“Are you laughing at me?” I snapped.

He nodded and laughed again. He then winced and stopped laughing.

“Ouch. Bad idea,” he muttered, resting his hand on his ribs.

“Are you okay?” I asked worriedly and he nodded.

“How long have I been out?” He asked.

“Since yesterday night,” I replied and he nodded, somehow relieved.

Dr. Parker and the nurses checked everything and asked him questions. I felt so happy that he was now awake.

Thank you, I thanked God.

Liam and Lee walked in the room a few minutes later and when they saw him awake, their eyes widened and smiles lit up their faces.

“Andrew!” They both screamed, setting the trays of food on the table and running to their brother.

He smiled at them before turning his attention back to the doctor.

Ten minutes later, the nurses were done with their job.

“Everything is great,” Dr. Parker said, smiling at us “You’ll be able to leave the hospital tomorrow morning when we’re a hundred percent sure nothing will go wrong. Just to stay on the safe side.”

We all nodded and he left the room, saying he will return later to check on him.

I breathed out a sigh of relief.

“Thank God you’re awake,” I muttered.

“You scared the shit out of us,” Liam said.

“Sorry,” Drew mumbled guiltily.

“What happened?” Lee asked.

Drew sighed before telling us the story.

“I had just dropped Nancy off at her cousin’s house and I was on my way to get you guys from the mall and out of nowhere a truck came and I couldn’t do anything about it. The last thing I remember is the ambulance.”

I winced, thinking about how terrifying it must have been for him. I immediately remembered what Dr. Parker said earlier about Drew saying my name before he passed out. My heart skipped a beat at that thought and before I could analyze it further, Drew spoke again.

“I’m sorry about your car,” he said, sounding guilty.

“Don’t worry about it,” I waved him off. I had totally forgotten about my car. “I’ll get it fixed.”

“Sorry,” he said again and I scowled at him.

“Stop apologizing!” I ordered him “I told you it’s fine. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

He gave me a smile that took my breath away and I struggled to smile back.

“I want a chocolate bar!” He whined “It feels like I haven’t eaten chocolate for years!”

I rolled my eyes at him and stood up.

“I’ll go get you something,” I said.

“No!” Liam suddenly exclaimed and I raised my eyebrow at him.

“We’ll go,” Lee said firmly as he and Liam stood up.

“Okay…?” I said uncertainly.

They beamed at me and left the room quickly.

“What’s up with those two?” I asked as I sat back on the chair.

He shrugged and I let it slip. They have their reasons… I think.

“You didn’t go home,” Drew pointed out “You’re still wearing the same outfit.”

“Yeah,” I answered “You didn’t expect me to go home, did you?”

“You should’ve went home,” he scolded me and I rolled my eyes at him.

“But thanks,” he added seriously and I smiled.

I didn’t ask him if he was able to hear me when I talked to him earlier because if he did that would be so embarrassing! I stayed silent, watching the machine that was reading his heartbeat.

“How was your date?” I asked, still staring at the screen of the machine.

“Good,” he answered briefly.

“That’s all?” I shifted my gaze to him “You’re going to describe your date as ‘good’?”

He shrugged. “How was your shopping?” He asked.

I narrowed my eyes at him and he gave me an innocent look.

“Don’t change the subject,” I said.

“Why are you so interested in how my date went anyway?” He asked.

I was caught off guard and when I opened my mouth, no words were coming out. He smirked at me and I huffed.

“Whatever,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest and looking away from him.

“It’s just one date. No need to get jealous. I’ll probably never see her again anyway, she’s leaving next week.” I gave him an incredulous look and his smirk widened.

“I’m not jealous!” I said defensively.

Liar, the voice in my head taunted.

Shut up! I ordered it.

“Why are you being so defensive?” He asked innocently.

I clenched my fists and glared at him.

“What?” He said, exaggerating his innocent look.

“Nothing. I’m just so jealous of your date,” I said sarcastically.

“I know,” he said, grinning smugly.

I gave him a fake pitiful look and sighed dramatically. “You’re not getting sarcasm anymore.”

He just rolled his eyes at me and said nothing else. Moments of silence passed before I spoke again.

“Does it hurt?” I asked, now looking at the cast on his left arm which was resting on his stomach.

“A bit,” he replied. I ran my fingers above the smooth white cast and smiled slightly.

“You know you have short fingers,” I started and my smile widened as I played with his fingers. I froze when the sound of his steady heartbeat increased. I glanced at the screen of the machine, noticing that the lines were moving faster. I glanced up at his face and noticed the pink blush on his cheeks. I pulled my hand away from his and his heart rate returned to its normal pace.

He shifted his gaze back to me and I stared back at him. Our faces were close, if he leaned in a bit and I leaned in a bit, our lips would touch.

Thank God I wasn’t the one attached to that heart machine because it would be so embarrassing if he could hear my extremely fast heartbeat.

His heartbeat started increasing again and I felt my own heartbeat increase as well. I didn’t move any closer to him, afraid of what might happen.

Man up and kiss him, I scolded myself. And when I finally got the courage to do so, I heard the door opening. I jumped back in my seat, moving away from him.

He sighed and his heartbeat returned back to normal. Lee and Liam came in carrying several chocolate bars. Drew thanked them and started eating one of the galaxy bars.

I, on the other hand, was still replaying what just happened. What would he have done if I kissed him? I wondered. Would he push me away? Or would he kiss me back and then apologize, saying it meant nothing?

I felt relieved that I didn’t kiss him because somehow I knew that his response would’ve been just like all the other times. And I don’t think I’ll be able to handle one of these again.
