Chapter 25

Angelina's Point of View:

My heart stopped and my eyes widened. The world around me started spinning as a billion thoughts ran through my mind. I couldn’t even hear anything around me and I was barely able to notice the brothers giving me worried and confused looks.

“Angelina? Are you there?” Dr. Parker asked, slightly worried.

“Y-yes,” I choked out. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

“Okay,” He said and I hung up.

I stood up and so did the brothers even though they had no idea what was going on. We ran out of the mall and I hailed a cab.

We went in and I gave the driver directions to the hospital.

“Angelina what’s wrong?” Lee asked, his voice panicked.

“H-he got into an accident,” I stammered.

“Andrew?” Liam asked and when I nodded, both of their faces turned pale and their eyes widened.

My head was pounding and fear made my heart race. I held my face in my hands and closed my eyes, trying to get rid of the pain. My breathing came out fast and shallow as bad thoughts flashed through my mind.

We reached the hospital and I quickly gave the driver ten dollars and ran to the main entrance. I went up to the young lady at the desk and she jumped in surprise when she saw the look on my face.

“Andrew Turner’s room please,” I said urgently.

“He’s in the Intensive Care Unit,” she started.

“Thanks,” I said quickly as I rushed to the other side of the huge building. Lee and Liam were right behind me. When I got there I was slightly out of breath. I saw a tall doctor which was in his mind-thirties walking in the hallway so I quickly went up to him and when I saw ‘Parker’ on his name tag I quickly spoke.

“Dr. Parker!” I said “I’m Angelina.”

Realization crossed his features as he looked down at me.

“Are you a family member?” He asked.

“No but Andrew and his brothers,” I pointed at Lee and Liam “Are staying with me for the summer.”

“I see,” he said “He got into a car accident and when the ambulance got there he was about to pass out. Your name was the last thing he uttered before falling unconscious.”

I took in a deep breath trying to calm myself but I failed. My whole body was shaking as I imagined him in a car accident, injured.

“How bad is it?” Lee asked, his voice shaking.

“He’s got a broken hand, two broken ribs, and a concussion. He’s still unconscious and we don’t know when he will wake up.”

Dr. Parker had a sad look on his face and upon hearing his last words, tears escaped my eyes.

We don’t know when he’ll wake up. His voice echoed in my head and more tears leaked.

When I looked at the other two brothers, my heart broke. They looked so sad and worried that it hurt to even look at them.

“You can see him,” Dr. Parker said, his voice sympathetic.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded. He led us to his room and opened the door. I hesitated before going in with Liam and Lee.

The room was a typical hospital room with white walls, a small couch, a chair, and a white bed. Drew was lying on the bed under white sheets. His eyes were closed and his breathing was deep and steady. He had a bandage on his forehead and a bruise on his left cheek. His black hair fell above the bandage, covering it slightly. There were many tubes connected to his arms and fingers. The only sound in the room was that of his breathing and the heart monitor showing his steady heartbeat. He looked so weak and vulnerable as his body laid limply on the hospital bed.

My vision blurred as tears welled up in my eyes and I couldn’t help but feel guilty. I shouldn’t have let him go on that stupid date. I shouldn’t have given him my car. I should’ve done something.

Even though his driving was good when he dropped us off at the mall, I should’ve asked him not to go on that date.

What am I going to tell him parents? How am I going to look at Lee and Liam? How can I look at him without feeling guilty?

This cannot be happening. Why? Why did this have to happen to him? Why him? Why not me? Why not someone else?

I can’t lose him. I can’t lose someone I care about anymore. I can deal with him going on dates with other girls, I can deal with him in a relationship but I can’t deal with losing him.

Please, I prayed, please don’t take him. Please let him wake up, please.

Lee and Liam sat on the couch on the left side of the bed, their eyes on their brother who was still in the same position. I bit my lip as my heart broke when I saw tears sliding down both of their sad faces.

I sat on the chair because my knees couldn’t hold me up anymore.

I lifted my legs up and hugged them closer to my chest as more tears crawled down my cheeks. The brothers didn’t say anything and I didn’t even have the courage to look at them.

Why is this happening? This wasn’t supposed to happen! He was supposed to come pick us up from the mall and then he’d talk about his date with Nancy and we’ll tell him about the gifts we got. I would feel jealous and my heart would clench uncomfortably as he talks about his date but I would try to act cool. Then we’d go back home and we’d joke around before we go up to our rooms and sleep. I could imagine the whole thing in my mind as I wished it was the reality instead of this.

“Angelina,” Lee whispered but I didn’t turn around to look at him. “Stop crying. He’ll be okay.”

“He’s strong, right?” Liam said.

I didn’t know what to say because their voices were full of pain and uncertainty. Did they even believe what they were saying? Did they really believe that he is strong and will be alright or were they just trying to convince themselves?

I sighed sadly as I wiped the tears on my cheeks. I closed my eyes tightly for a few seconds hoping to get rid of the burning in my eyes because of crying. I know that I seem a bit melodramatic but the thing is, I’m terrified. My biggest fear is losing someone I care about. I already lost the most important people in my life. Maybe they aren’t dead but still they are not next to me when I need them. I don’t want anything to happen to Drew. I can’t even think about losing him.

“We’re gonna go get some water, okay?” Lee said.

I nodded and the two brothers walked out of the room. I glanced at the clock hanging on the wall and was surprised to see that it was already midnight.

I sighed again and fixed my gaze on Drew. Will he remember what happened when he wakes up? Will he lose his memory? Will he forget who I was? Will he remember everything? Will he wake up? Do unconscious people hear us when we talk to them? Some say yes and others say no. Will he hear me?

I could give it a shot, right?

I’ll probably look stupid while talking to an unconscious person.

I sighed, irritated. “Whatever.” I muttered.

“Okay so you probably can’t hear me, right?” I frowned “Um yeah I don’t expect an answer. This is stupid. I am stupid!” I slapped myself and narrowed my eyes at the unconscious boy.

“I’m just gonna say this: Wake up. And don’t you dare ignore me. Don’t even think about leaving. You got that?”

I looked away and my heart clenched when the only response I got was the steady beat of his heart.

I didn’t want to sleep but I felt my eyes droop. I couldn’t keep them open anymore as my brains slowly turned fuzzy.

“Please wake up. Wake up,” I mumbled before falling asleep.

“Angelina,” I heard someone call me and shake me gently. After the second time, my eyes flew open and I came face to face with Liam.

“I just had the worst nightmare—”

The words died in my throat when I saw Drew unconscious. Oh. That wasn’t a nightmare. At that realization, I felt as if I was going through the whole night all over again. Tears filled my eyes and I started crying again, ignoring the painful burning of my eyes.

“Shh” Liam said as he hugged me tightly “He’s going to be alright.”

“How do you know?” I said, my voice cracking slightly.

“I don’t. I just hope he does,” he whispered the last part and I squeezed him a bit tighter.

“I’m sorry. It’s my fault.”

Liam immediately pulled away and looked at me intently.

“It is not your fault! Why would you even think that?”

“I-I was the one who let him take my car. I shouldn’t have let him drive alone. What was I thinking?!” I exclaimed, feeling guilty and mad at myself.

“He’s been driving for two years! It’s no one’s fault. That’s why it’s called an ‘accident’.”

I looked away from him still feeling guilty but not as much as before. I knew he was right but when you’re in a situation like mine, you can’t help but blame yourself.

“I know it’s hard for you,” Lee was the one talking now “It’s hard for all of us to see him lying there but we shouldn’t blame ourselves.”

I nodded as my gaze traveled back to the beautiful boy on the white bed.

“It really sucks to see him like this,” I said as the brothers sat back on the couch. I hated the fact that he wasn’t smiling and teasing me like he always does and I hated how I couldn’t see his blue eyes.

“Why don’t you go home?” Lee said softly “Have a shower and sleep for a bit.”

It was 5:00a.m now. I have been sleeping for around five hours and he was still unconscious.

“No,” I said calmly but firmly “I’m staying.”

Seconds turned into minutes and minutes turned into hours. We all fell asleep at some point and when I woke up it was already morning but Liam and Lee were still sleeping.

A few minutes later, a young nurse walked in. She just gave me a small smile before changing something in the many tubes on his arms. I watched her silently, not paying much attention to her. When she was done, she was about to say something but when she noticed the two brothers sleeping on the couch, she closed her mouth and a sad look crossed her eyes. I looked down, avoiding her gaze.

When I heard the door open and close behind her, I looked up again and saw Drew in the same position since yesterday.

I stood up and stretched my legs and arms. I glanced at the brothers and when I saw them still sleeping, I quietly slipped out of the room. The hallways were quiet and only a few nurses and doctors were walking around.

I was about to ask a nurse about Dr. Parker when I saw him coming around the corner. I walked up to him and he smiled slightly when he saw me.

“Angelina,” he said.

“Good morning,” I said “Do you have any news?”

He sighed, looking down at his clipboard. “I don’t know Angelina. I expected him to have woke up by now.”

My heart dropped at his words. “W-what do you mean?”

“I really hope he wakes up soon,” Dr. Parker said softly.

“Dr. Parker!” A nurse called him. He gave me and apologetic look and walked away to where the nurse was.

I walked around the hallways, not knowing where I was going, but I didn’t care. Dr. Parker’s words replayed in my head and I tried to keep my thoughts optimistic but it wasn’t working.

When I noticed that I was in the cafeteria, I decided to buy some food for breakfast. I bought three cheese sandwiches and three juice boxes.

“Thanks,” I told the cashier.

“Are you okay?” He asked. I looked up and him and nodded. He was in his mid twenties with blond hair and warm green eyes.

“I’m fine.”

“Are you sure?” he insisted, his voice concerned.

“Yes!” I snapped at him. He looked taken aback and I immediately realized what I did.

“I’m sorry!” I apologized quickly “I didn’t mean to snap at you. I’m just tired and my friend is still unconscious and he might not wake up.” I shut my mouth and blushed in embarrassment when I noticed that I was rambling.

“Sorry,” I apologized again and he smiled at me.

“It’s okay,” he said “I know it sucks. I’ve been there.”

“You have?” I asked, surprised.

“Yeah,” he answered “My fiancée was in a coma for two months.”

I gasped. Two months?! It hasn’t even been a whole day and I’m feeling that sad. I can’t believe he went through this everyday for two months!

“I can’t begin to imagine how hard it was for you.” I said.

“It was really hard to see her there every day without even moving an inch. Every day, a little bit of the hope I had would be crushed but that one day. I felt it was a different day before even coming to the hospital. I knew it was a good day and I was right because that was the day she woke up.”

“Wow,” I murmured, amazed “Thank God she woke up.”

“Yeah,” he said “Don’t lose hope, alright? I’m sure everything will be okay.”

“Thank you…”

“Trent,” he offered.

“Thank you Trent,” I smiled at him, feeling a bubble of hope inside me. “I’m Angelina by the way.”

“You’re welcome, Angelina. I hope he wakes up soon.”

I gave him one last smile before walking up to the room with Trent’s words still stuck in my mind.

I opened the door quietly and when I found Lee and Liam still sleeping, I put the food on the table deciding to wait for them to wake up first. I sat back in the chair and gazed at Drew.

I held his right hand in both of mine, being careful not to touch any of the tubes. I sighed quietly when I saw the white cast on his broken left arm.

I examined his hand and smiled slightly when I noticed that his fingers were short. I felt his hand tighten slightly around mine and my gaze quickly snapped up to his face. A wave of disappointment flooded through me when I saw his eyes still closed and his breathing was still deep and steady.

I swear what I felt was real. Does that mean he can feel and hear? A spark of hope filled my heart at that thought and I felt as if he would wake up any minute. I squeezed his hand and his fingers rubbed my hand ever so slightly. At that moment, I knew that he would wake up soon. I felt exactly what Trent had told me. Today is a good day. I’m sure of it.
