Chapter 26

Third person pov

Atlantis stared at the blonde man. He was skinny-- too skinny to be considered healthy. His large white shirt hung off him like an oversized sail on a ship, drooping and flapping in a way Atlantis didn't think it was supposed to. His face was terribly gaunt, his eyes sunken in. Atlantis wondered how he hadn't picked up on it when he first crossed paths with him at that meeting. Maybe it had been due to the stress, or perhaps something else. Either way, it was painfully obvious to him now that this man was playing a close and dangerous game with death. How he was still alive, Atlantis didn't know.

"Wh...What happened to you?" Atlantis found himself breathing out. Aizawa watched tensely as his husband approached the nervous Number One Hero. Toshinori's eyes were darting about the room, refusing to look at Atlantis. His large hands curled around the edge of the cot he was on, his body twitching awkwardly as he tried to figure out what to do with himself, and what to say. Aizawa let out a slow breath of air. This was fine. It would all be perfectly, one-hundred percent okay. He just needed to relax.

He could feel through their bond that Atlantis was antsy. But there was also a bout of concern there that made him almost want to smile. It was amazing to him how much Atlantis cared about others. It made him feel proud. But no matter how good Atlantis' intentions were, there was still always a chance that things could go terribly wrong. Shota was praying that didn't happen this time around. With his luck, his begging was probably all for naught.

"I... Well, I got into a fight." Toshinori started lamely. Recovery Girl slapped her palm against her face in an exasperated way as Toshinori gestured vaguely to his stomach area, refusing to look at Atlantis' concerned face. "It was a while back and, uh-- I mean, I-I guess I got really hurt and it couldn't be healed?"

It came out sounding more like a question. Nezu sipped at his tea-- where had he gotten that?-- whilst Recovery Girl sighed. Aizawa crossed his arms over his chest, not looking too happy about the current situation. He met Atlantis' gaze as the merman turned back to look at him, brows furrowed tightly and mouth twisted into a frown. Aizawa wished he didn't have to deal with this. That he could live a peaceful life free of... well, of this. That's all Aizawa wanted. Though through their bond, he could feel that Atlantis was happy to help. The underground pro was happy for at least that.

Atlantis turned back towards Toshinori. There was something radiating off of him. It was the same feeling he'd drawn from Midoriya. It was familiar, pulling him in and causing his powers to buzz. The crystal around his neck heated up just a little, vibrating in agreement. There was something different about this man. Something familiar, and warm. He was a friend to the ocean. But what kind of friend? Not the merfolk kind. There was a hint of magic in him, teeming under the surface of his skin patiently as though it were waiting to be let out. Atlantis bit his lip. There was something going on here... something weird. If he wasn't a merman, why was there mer magic present inside of him?

"Can I see the injury?" Atlantis requested softly. Toshinori cringed a little but complied without argument, reaching to pull up his shirt and reveal the gruesome wound. He expected Atlantis to recoil, but the man only leaned in closer, his blue eyes going a little wide and a little more confused. There was almost a sort of recognition in his oceanic irises, but it was overshadowed by sheer bewilderment. Almost as though he knew what he was looking and but couldn't figure out how it had gotten here. Toshinori's brows raised. He looked to Recovery Girl and Nezu, but they couldn't see his face. A glance at Aizawa was enough to tell him that somehow the Underground Pro also knew how lost Atlantis was. Aizawa's brows were just as furrowed as his husband's were.

Atlantis' claimed last name came back to the blonde man as the healer's eyes roamed his mangled torso. Shimura. Did that have something to do with this? Was it more than just a coincidence? His mouth felt dry as Atlantis reached out a hand, his eyes glowing slightly. One For All buzzed to life inside of him, reaching out to the healer warmly. Like it was welcoming home an old friend. Toshinori's grip on his shirt tightened, his wide eyes raising and meeting Aizawa's stern ones. Who was this man? Where had he come from? And why did One For All like him so much?

Atlantis' fingers ghosted the injury, and he flinched as a jolt shot through him. His glowing eyes grew to the size of small saucers, and for once, he had no idea what in Poseidon's name he was supposed to do. Was there anything he could do in this situation? He had no doubts this injury was the result of magic, hence why none of these quirks had been able to remedy it. Oceanic magic was a breed of its own. An injury placed by merfolk abilities could only be removed by merfolk abilities. That was simply how it worked. But when in the world had this man come in contact with a mer? And why had they been fighting?

"Who... Who in the world gave this to you?" Atlantis found himself blurting out, looking perplexed. Toshinori tensed considerably, but Atlantis didn't stop. "It-- I don't understand. Why would someone be fighting-- I-I mean, the ocean clearly likes you, so why would-- did you do something?"

Aizawa could feel the confusion radiating through their bond as the cogs in Atlantis' mind turned. Toshinori looked completely lost, looking to Nezu and Recovery Girl as though they'd have answers, and then to Aizawa. Shota didn't know what to say. This wasn't something he'd experienced. He felt worried for Atlantis, but he didn't want to get in the way either. He had never seen his husband so... so perplexed, however. It made his lips curl into a considering frown. Was there more to the injury than everyone had first assumed?

"It was... a long time enemy of mine." Toshinori wasn't sure how to respond to the ocean comment. What did he mean when he said that the ocean liked him? Was the ocean not just some massive body of water? He didn't see how it could like anyone in particular, but that being said, what did Toshinori know? Atlantis clearly knew what he was talking about. Now probably wasn't the time to be asking questions.

The young man assessing his injury looked like he'd just taken a turn down the wrong road and had no idea how to find his way back. He looked at Toshinori was such a puzzled glint in his lightly-glowing eyes, his hands still hovering over the wound as though it would tell him the story of how it came to be. Toshinori stared back, eyes a little wider and a little more questioning than usual. He wished he had answers for Atlantis, but he had no idea what was happening either.

"I-I see." Atlantis shook his head, clearing his thoughts. Could there be a mer out there who was a villain? Why else would they be fighting a hero? That was against everything the ocean taught them, though! Violence wasn't ever the answer. "I... You feel the same as that student with the broken arm. Midoriya. You both... it's the same."

Recovery Girl tensed, and Aizawa's brows shot up. Nezu awkwardly averted his gaze when the Underground Pro shot him a scrutinizing look. He felt the same as Midoriya? What was that supposed to mean? This injury obviously wasn't your everyday, run of the mill type. In the sense that there was something else going on here, though. Not where it came from necessarily. What had Atlantis even meant when he said the ocean liked him? Was Toshinori part mer? Aizawa had a million questions and no time to get answers.

"A-Ah, I see." Toshinori had no idea what to say to that, looking like a deer in headlights. Atlantis didn't seem to notice the severity of what he'd said, walking over to one of the windows and popping it open. It was a perfectly sunny day outside. Flawless weather-- an ideal day. Atlantis poked his head out and looked at the sky with furrowed eyebrows. They all watched him quietly. Aizawa held his breath. He had a dreadful feeling building in his stomach. It was irrational, but it felt like today was going to be the day Atlantis' secret got out. To All Might, Nezu, and Recovery Girl anyway. He wasn't looking forward to it.

"Atlantis." Aizawa called, drawing the man's attention back inside. Atlantis turned to him with a frown, looking almost saddened. As though he were mourning something. "Are you alright? Can you do anything?"

Atlantis looked at Toshinori, who was still holding his shirt up. The wound seemed to taunt him. Atlantis knew he could help. He could heal it. But not here. He had listened to the wind, and he'd looked to the sky. It wouldn't be enough. There simply wasn't enough strength here.

"Rain won't work. It isn't' strong enough." Atlantis admitted. Nezu watched with intrigue whilst Recovery Girl shared a raised-brow look with Toshinori. The lanky blonde looked vaguely uncomfortable. Aizawa took it in stride, nodding. It had rained the day he was injured. Brought on by Atlantis' grief and rage. If it wasn't raining now, there was a reason. "But... The ocean..."

Aizawa's heart sunk, and he cursed internally. Of course. Atlantis derived his power from the ocean. It was a part of who he was. The 'mother' of his species, and the home in which he'd been born into. It would make sense that he'd have to return to take care of something as severe as All Might's injury. But that would surely give away Atlantis' secret. What would Nezu and Recovery Girl do? What would All Might? They all three clearly knew how to keep their own secrets, but this was a whole other matter all together. This was another species.

"I don't know." Aizawa eyed the others in the room with something akin to suspicion. Atlantis could feel the underlying fear in his partner. He took a deep breath. He had to do this. He didn't really want to give his secret away. But he had to.

"The ocean likes him, Shota. It wants to help." Atlantis said. "I don't know know who gave him this injury, but it's familiar. I know I can heal it. But it can't be here, and it can't be with this necklace on."

"...It's your choice." Aizawa said, his heart thundering. He was afraid. But this was All Might, and there was clearly something else at work here. Recovery Girl looked between the pair of married men suspiciously. Nezu just sipped his tea. Normally, he could get a read on what was going on. This time, he didn't even have a guess! There were some things he simply didn't know, and this was one of them. He was determined to find out, however. Even if that meant patiently waiting and sipping his tea!

"...W-We have to." Atlantis turned back towards All Might, his eyes boring into the pro hero's with focused intent. Toshinori felt his quirk buzz deep in the pit of his stomach, almost as though responding to Atlantis' presence and determination. It was a weird feeling that made his hands tighten around the edge of the cot his was on. He couldn't stop his brows from furrowing. Just what... what was going on here? Who was Atlantis Shimura, and why did his quirk seem so drawn to him?

"You said you can heal it, correct?" Recovery Girl asked, drawing Atlantis' attention to her. "What do you need to make that happen, dear?"

"...The ocean." Atlantis responded, his voice quiet. Nezu paused mid sip, and Aizawa looked away. "We need to go to the ocean. But first, I-I need to go get something."

"What is it?" Aizawa asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Hitoshi." Atlantis admitted, looking scared and paler than usual. His voice was so quiet Aizawa almost didn't' hear it. There as fear-- he didn't want to put his cousin in danger, but he didn't see how he could do this alone. Even if Hitoshi wasn't a healer, he was a siren. And they were powerful in their own ways. "We need to go get Hitoshi."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hitoshi opened the door after Aizawa gave it a good few firm knocks. He had been expecting Atlantis, seeing as he could sense him beyond the door. And sure, the merman was there. But he wasn't alone. Hitoshi blinked, standing there in Hello Kitty pajama bottoms and a black cat shirt, holding a bowl of cereal whilst being stared down by the Principal, Recovery Girl, and a lanky blonde man who looked to be almost seven feet tall. Aizawa and Atlantis stood there as well, the latter looking both sheepish and perhaps a little scared.
Aizawa glanced between the two mer as they seemed to communicate with their eyes. Atlantis was teeming with nervous energy. Aizawa put a hand on his shoulder and squeezed in a way he hoped was comforting. Atlantis shot him a small smile, looking back to Hitoshi and nodding to the teen. Hitoshi nodded back slightly, glancing once again at the UA staff they'd dragged along.
Hitoshi took a bite of his cereal, chewing slowly as he further took in the odd group at the door. Nezu sipped his tea. Had he been holding that cup before? Hitoshi didn't know. The teen let out a heavy sigh, his spoon clinking back down into the bowl in an exasperated manner. He was too tired for this. But this was his cousin, and he was beyond glad to have found him again. He could just do without the drama was all.
"I'll go get my shoes." He grumbled, turning around. "I'm assuming we're going to need the paint!"
"Y-You have some?" Atlantis asked, hopeful. Paint made from seashells wasn't something they often made seeing as they were underwater most of the time, but it could help greatly in healing ceremonies and other rituals of that sort. It wasn't a surprise Hitoshi had some. It could be used to help honor and connect to the ocean on rainy days, which he was sure his cousin had been doing. It would make this process a lot smoother.
"Yeah!" Hitoshi called back from somewhere in the apartment. Atlantis turned to Aizawa, beaming brightly. Shota smiled back, not really knowing what the pair were talking about but going along with it anyway. Toshinori sniffed awkwardly, not knowing what to say. Paint? Did Atlantis actually know what he was talking about? Well, he probably did, but was he sure he could heal him? And why were they bringing along this teenage boy? He was pretty sure he was a student... what if he found out his secret? But it's not like he could say no...
Wow... he was actually going to be healed. Atlantis was serious. This wasn't a joke. He was positive-- he was sure he could actually do it. Toshinori had been so sure he was going to die, but here this man was telling him he could make his wound go away. That he could help. It felt... almost too good to be true. Sir Nighteye would laugh if he were here and call it bogus. The thought of his old friend dampened his spirit slightly.
They waited a moment longer before Hitoshi stumbled around the corner with two jars. One was full of orange paste and the other purple. His flip flops looked ready to fall off, but he'd at least changed into swim trunks. Atlantis excitedly clapped his hands together, receiving both of the jars with a happy gleam in his eyes. Hitoshi grinned back, looking somewhat proud as he closed and locked the door behind him. Aizawa took back his apartment key with a nod.
"It's not the best since I couldn't... go in and get shells." Hitoshi shot a look at the three in their little group who didn't know the secret, trying to be subtle about his wording. Atlantis nodded. "I hope it'll still do."
"It's perfect." Atlantis chirped, looking excited. "Now! We need a... yes, a boat!"
"Wait, we need a what?"
