Chapter 6
It was Saturday. Filming day.
Filming day was always, without fail, the craziest day of the week. Lorne, the cast, me - everyone was on edge. It was terrifying. It was overwhelming. It was near-constant-busyness with no way out.
It was awesome.
I caught my breath and stopped at the water fountain, tugging at my sleeves before pressing the button to drink. It was only nine o'clock and already I had run seven errands for my boss. I looked up and Jimmy rounded the corner and my ragged breath stopped altogether.
There's just something about the way he walks.
I bit my tongue. No. No. No. We are not going down that road again. I turned back to the water fountain for a final sip. Never.
He approached me as I walked to the copy machine. "Hey, Nori," he chimed.
"Hey yourself," I replied, avoiding his gaze by focusing on the papers I needed to stuff into the machine.
"You're always so busy on Saturdays," he remarked, chuckling adorably.
No - not adorably. Just normally. Like any other human being does. Just chuckled. That's it.
"Yeah," I replied, collecting the papers as they started to print. "Lorne has been giving me order after order, but hey - that's my job!" I laughed. "It's all good!"
As they finished I scooped them into my arms and turned away from the machine. I glanced up as I walked towards Lorne's office. "See you later, Fallon," I said, meeting his brown eyes, trying to forget about the inevitable sparkle I found there.
I could feel him watch me walk away. He was on the verge of saying something again - probably the same thing as last time - but nothing came out. By the time I was out of Lorne's office, he was gone.
I was just about to sit at my desk when my phone rang. I picked it up. "Lorne Michael's office. This is Elenore."
"Hey. It's Lorne."
"Hello, sir."
"Change of plans. Listen, I'm gonna need you to bring that script down for me right now."
"No problem. I'll be there in two."
"Great." CLICK.
I ran to Lorne's empty desk and grabbed the scripts, then jogged down the hall to the practice room. I swung open the door and walked across the large room, handing my boss the scripts. Everyone was talking to one another, yet I felt a pair of eyes on me. I glanced around the room. My heart did a jolt; Jimmy was staring straight at me.
We locked eyes. Neither of us looked away for a long time. It wasn't until Lorne started speaking to me that I tore my gaze off him.
"It would be nice if you stayed for the rehearsal today," Lorne said, "just in case I need anything."
Stay? My eyes darted over to Jimmy for a split second; he was still staring. "Uhh...okay. Sure! I mean..yes! Of course." I took a seat off to the side and nervously folded my arms across my chest.
They ran through the scene loads of times. Lorne asked me to get a few things every couple of mock takes - a cup of water, a towel, a bag of chips. I was running down the hallway to the room with a new clipboard when I ran right smack into Jimmy.
"Whoa - sorry!" I cried, backing away.
"No, no," he laughed, "I'm sorry, Nori! Hey...you know what time it is, right?"
I looked around for a clock. "Can't say I do."
He grinned. "It's lunch time. You game?"
I stared up into his sparkling eyes, his soft skin, his dark chocolate hair, and wondered for a fleeting moment just what it would be like to fall into it all at once. That moment was warning enough.
"I...can't."
He blinked. "Huh?"
"I can't go to lunch today, Fallon...I've got to, um...I've got some stuff I need to do for Lorne, so..."
"Ah, okay! That's uh...that's fine! Totally fine! I've got it..."
"Great!" I smiled awkwardly. "See you later, I guess!"
"Yeah...." he waved and turned on his heel, "...later..."
I watched him walk away and felt like part of me was walking away with him. Better to lose only part of me than all of me.
But what good am I without the part he took?
"No," I muttered to myself. "I'm fine."
