Chapter 4

My stomach grumbled loudly. Thankfully, everyone was rehearsing for tonight's taping, so I didn't feel too embarrassed - just hungry as crap. I glanced over at the clock. Five minutes until Jimmy and I would head out for sandwiches. Finally.

We'd been getting lunch together since my first day. We usually went to the same place and ordered the same things, though sometimes we changed it up. Today I was hankering for ham and cheese, or maybe tuna. Basically anything edible would be awesome.

"Nori Nori Nori Nori Nori Nori!!!!" Jimmy shouted down the hall. He swung open the doors and slapped his hands down on my desk.

"You alright there, Fallon?" I laughed.

"Food!" he cried simply with a big smile on his face. "Let's go!"

"My stomach totally agrees!" I said, slipping into the elevator after him. "So where are we off to today?"

"Same place, I guess, unless you've got a different idea," he glanced at me and I shook my head.

"I'm good with anything right now!"

"Sweet," he said, messing with his hair, which was ruffled and matted to extremes today.

We hopped into a cab and Jimmy talked about the skit they'd been working on. "It's just your usual Weekend Update stuff," he said. "Gags, puns, news - the like. How are things with you today, huh? Is Lorne making you feed his cat?"

I laughed. "No, or at least not yet," I sighed. "He hasn't asked me to do much at all today. It's been pretty slow. I should probably clean out my file cabinet, but I've got no motivation to do it."

"Clean out your file cabinet?" he said in bewilderment. "You've been working here for, what, three weeks? And you've already got a messy file cabinet? Geez, you're worse than me..."

I jokingly punched him on the arm, but he just laughed harder. "Shut up!"

We finally silenced our practically harmonizing stomachs with tuna sandwiches and soda, downing a couple tiny bags of chips for good measure. I was halfway through a story about how I once broke my nose as a kid when something interrupted it. "So I was walking across the stage, right? And everything's going great - I hadn't forgotten a line or anything, and then - ,"

"Jiiiimmy? Is that you?"

I turned around. A girl with strawberry blonde hair and a super short skirt sashayed to the table, emitting high-pitched squeals as she came. Jimmy crinkled his nose and grinned. "Heyyy Angela!" he said smoothly, raising his hand for a single wave. She saddled up beside him and twisted some of her hair around her finger.

"Are you ready for tomorrow?" she asked silkily.

"Oh, yeah I think I am," he said, sniggering under his breath. "Uhh, this is my friend Nori - Elenore," he corrected. It sounded strange to hear him say my real name. "Elenore, this is Angela."

"Hi," I said, sticking my hand out cordially. She just stared at me with a blank look on her face, halfway between stupid and angry. I pulled my hand back and scratched my head, pretending like it didn't matter.

She turned back to Jimmy. "See you tomorrow," she growled, leaning in to whisper something I couldn't hear. His face turned pink. She leaned back and kissed him roughly, right in the middle of the cafe. I wanted to sink into the floor. How is it humanly possible for someone to use that much tongue? I looked away and covered my mouth with my hand, trying to appear casual and forget the fact that people were staring at our table. I had the sudden impulse to wave and say something like, "Hi. How are you doing today? My name's Elenore Hayes and I have nothing to do with this makeout session. Nothing. I swear."

Finally, she released him, turning away on her high heels towards the door. And just like that, with a fragrant wave of flowery perfume, she was gone.

"Wow," I said simply, picking at my sandwich, which somehow didn't seem as appetizing anymore. Jimmy cleared his throat.

"Yeah, Angela, she's...." his voice trailed off. I looked up and met his eyes.

"She's nice," I lied.

"You really think so?"

"I mean...yeah!" I said, lying even further. "I hope you have a great time tomorrow." I returned to picking at my food, trying to make it seem appealing. Nothing was working.

"Nori?"

I looked up again. "Yeah?"

He stared at me, on the cusp of words and with something to say, yet no feasible way to let it out. He closed his mouth, tilted his head, and said, "Do you think maybe we should head back?"

"Yeah," I nodded. "Let's go."

The cab ride back was the quietest it had ever been between us. I stared out the window and pulled at the loose threads on my sweater. "So, have you got anybody special in your life? There's gotta be some sort of hot hunk taking you out to dinner, right?" Jimmy suddenly blurted, ending the silence.

I turned away from the passing streets and forced a grin. "Nah, not really....at least not anymore."

"Nobody at all?" he said. "Really?"

"Yeah! Really!" I chuckled. "Why is that so hard to believe?"

He shrugged, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I don't know...you're...you're beautiful, Nori." My heart ached within me.

"Thanks, Fallon," I said. "Not too many people say stuff like that to me."

"Well, they should."

We headed back upstairs and I settled into my seat, ignoring the pounding in my ears and the knot in my stomach. "How was lunch?" I heard a male voice ask down the hall.

"It was sweet, man. Guess who I ran into??"

"Who??"

"Angela!"

"Ohhhh man, duuuude! She's a babe!"

I stood up from my desk and pushed in my chair, nonchalantly making my way to the bathroom. Amy was leaving just as I was opening the door.

"Whoa - you alright?" she asked.

"Yeah," I said, letting out a pathetic fake chuckle. "I'm totally okay."

She looked at me in disbelief. "Okay," she said, shutting the door.

I am such a liar.
