Chapter 3

*Badlands*

A hand brushed carefully, sweeping away the sand and rock, slowly reveal...a dark curve of a fossil.
It's a claw as a dentist pick gently lit it from the place, that was laying for million of years.
A group of diggers are working on the whole, large skeleton who is being exavarted.
A man is working on the claw as it lay in his hand.

"Four complete skeletons...such a small area...the same horizon" Alan
"They died together?" Ellie
"The taphonomy sure looks that way" Alan
"If they died together, they lived together. Suggests some kind of social order" Aaron
Alan went and carefully examines a claw as Ellie and Aaron studies it with him too.
Painting the exposed bone with rubber cement, "They hunted as a team. The dismembered tenontosaurus bone over there..that's lunch" Alan
"But what killed our raptors in a lake bed, in a bunch like this as better come up with something that makes sense" Alan

"A drought"

The three turned their heads to see a woman standing there, "The lake was shrinking" she
"Excellent. That's good" Aaron
Add
"They did around a dried up puddle. Without fighting each other" Alan
"This is looking good" Ellie as Alan shoves the claw absent mindely into his pocket.

"Dr.Grant, Grant, Dr.Sattler"

They all turned their heads to look at the bottom of the hill, "We're ready to call again!" a lad calls.

Groan

"Okay, Billy!" Aaron replied and he nod his head before turning around to walk away.
They went and gathered their things as they stood up from the ground.
"I hate computers" Alan complains, grumbling under his breath.

"The feeling mutal" Ellie whispers back as she went and fix his red bandanna

They aren't all that bad. Sometimes computers can help
Well, you're gonna have to get used to it, Alan. One way or another
Yeah, but I guess he prefer the old school stuff like shovels to find what you are looking for Alan shook his head

Footsteps...Footsteps

Exposed outcroppings of a crumbling limestone.
For miles in every direction, not a tree or bush in sight.
The dog itself ground are checked with excavations everywhere.
There is a base camp, a flapping mess tent, a few cards, a flatbed truck with wrapped fossils and loaded on it along with some mobile homes.
Dozen volunteers of all ages are at work in various places around the dig.
Volunteers are from all walks of life and dinosaur buffs as the group wondered down the hill, over to the tent.

*Base Camp*

They entered the tent as a small crowd of people gathered around a computer.

"Daddy!"

A little girl ran on over to them, "Hey pumpkin!" Alan said as he went and picked up his younger daughter Rosie.
"You guys ready?" Billy ask them from behind the computer.
"Yes please, Billy" Aaron tells him and the lad went to work.

*Outside*
Noise...Noise...

A lead bullet is loaded into a machine as it went and blasted the bullet into the ground.

*Base Camp*
"You'll get a reading out of that" Billy inform them.
"Did it work?" a volunteer called Olivia ask Billy as the screen flickered a bit.
"How long does it usually take?" Aaron questioned, taking off his glasses.
"Should bring immediate return" Billy answered.

*Outside*
Shooting the radar into the ground, and the bone bounces...

*Base Camp*
Click!

"into a image back. Bouncee it back" Billy finishes saying as the crowd watch the screen.

Slowing a fuzzy image appears on the screen, before slowly revealing a...yellow image of a velociraptor skeleton.

"Wow!"

"That's a raptor!" Rosie exclaimed in happiness and awe with a smile on her face.
"That's a full raptor skeleton" Aaron stated as Heather taking photos and nearby a teenage is sitting down, playing a video game on his console.

Snap!...Snap!

"This new program's incredible. A few more years development and people won't even have to dig anymore" Heather said in amazement.

Chuckle...Snigger...

Ellie went and gently squeeze Alan arm, "Where's the fun in that?" he ask Heather.
Making the woman shrugged, "We wouldn't get that dirty, that was all I was saying" Heather whispered.

Snap!...Snap!

"It's a little distorted, but I don't think it's the computer" Billy tells them as they move closer.

"Look"

"Post-mortem contraption of the posterior neck ligaments" Aaron said as Rosie jumped up and won a little.
Trying to see the screen, Voice...Voice...
Alan noticed and reached around behind him.
Pulling a large silver barrel over and place it down.
Alan went and picked up his daughter before setting her down, finally seeing the screen clearly.
"Velociraptor?" Ellie inquired.
"Yes" Aaron confirmed with a nod of his head.
"Good shape, too. It's five...six feet high" he stated.
"I'm guessing nine feet long?" Aaron guessed as Alan reached out to the screen.
"Look at the extradionary..." Alan started to say as he touched the screen with his index finger, accidentally.
Making the screen flicker and fuzxed into static, making the image change.
"What'd you do?" Billy asked in confusion, looking at Alan in confusion as Aaron drew his hand back.
"He touched it!" Jake said with a chuckle as his father went and touches the top of the hood of the computer.
Experimentally, making the screen flicker again.
"Dr.Grant's not macin compatible!" Ellie joked.
"Hell, they're got it in for me" Alan mutter to himself, distastefully.
Before going back to his normal voice, "And look at the halt-moon shaped bones in the wrists" Alan pointed out.
"No wonder those guys learned how to fly" he comment.

Laughing

"No, seriously!" Aaron said as he directed the crowd to him as Ellie patted his arm.

*Imagine this is Aaron speaking*

"Alright, maybe dinosaurs have more in common with present-day birds than they do with reptiles" Aaron said.

"Look at the public bones"

Alan went and gestured to the skeleton on the screen, carefully not to touch it.
"just like a bird. And even the word raptor means, bird of prey..." Alan continues for his brother.

"That doesn't look very scary"

Making everyone turn around...

Laughing...Chuckle...Groan

Making Alan turn around to look at the boy, "A tukey, huh?" Alan asked with a grin on his face.
He went and straighten himself up before  the crowd of people.
Making Jake rolled his eyes, "Oh, no. Here we go" Ellie muttered under her breath.
"Things are about to fun" Aaron joked with a chuckle

"Okay"

"Try to imagine yourself on the cretaceous period" Alan began to say as he stopped in front of the boy.

The man went and knelt down to his level.

"You get your first look at this six foot turkey moves like as you enter a clearing. He moves like a bird, lightly, bobbing his head...and you keep still 'cause you think that maybe his visual acuity is based on movement, like a T-Rex, he'll lose you song move... " Alan explained.
"but no, not velociraptor" he stated as the boy rolled his eyes at the man words.
"You stare at him, and he just stares right back" he said as the man gestured between his eyes and the kid.
"And that's when the attack comes not from the front, but from the side..from the other two raptors..." he said.
"you didn't even know were there" Alan told the boy.
"Because velociraptor's a pack hunter" he informed.
"He used coordinated attack patterns..." Alan said as he reached into his pocket.
"and he is out in force today" he added.

"And he slashes at you...

with this"

"Six-inch, retractle claw

Pretends to slash boys mid-torso
Slashed claw through air diagonally
Just above boy chest
Claw in hand
Across stomach with
Making him scarex

"or here" Alan
Continues moves like a cut motion gently
Groin
Downwards from abdomen to thigh

"Oh Alan"

"spilling your intestines"

"The point is, you are alive, when they start to eat you" Alan said.
"So you know, try to show a little respect" he tells the boy.

"Okay" the boy replied and turns to the crowd, glassy eyed.
