chapter 19.

( CHAPTER 19 )
real life

⋆⋆⋆

IT WAS NEAR the time of day where the the sun was low in the sky, and shades of orange painted the atmosphere. Street lamps flickered on, and it got chillier in the air. A feeling of closure came upon the boy, knowing that the day was coming to an end. But not for him in particular, tonight Ruth begged him to check up on June, who had probably just fallen asleep by accident.

But she also hadn't texted him in awhile...

He brushed away the thought, knocking on her trailer. There was no response. Furrowing his eyebrows, he knocked again. There was a bit of shuffling. She had to be in there.

"June?" Chandler asked, wondering if she just didn't hear her knock. There was nothing but a few light footsteps.

He swear he could hear sniffling.

"June, are you okay?"

"I'm fine."

Her voice didn't seem fine, it sounded as if she was choking back on something, as if she was ready to burst into tears. He couldn't just stand there.

"I'm coming in whether you like it or not," Chandler shouted at the door. There was no more noise. Luckily the door was unlocked, and he stepped right in.

As Chandler stepped inside he was shocked to see her attempt to look away from him and wipe away something from her cheeks. They were tears. His heart immediately fell. He'd never really been in situations like this, and he was a newbie at trying to comfort someone. But with June it seemed to come naturally.

"June, what's going on?" He asked cautiously while closing the door and stepping forwards, but she ended up stepping farther away and looking out her window.

"Nothing...I'm just, nothing..."

"This doesn't seem like nothing."

"I need to use the restroom," she said before letting a few stray tears fall.

June quickly ran down her trailer, and before Chandler could catch up to her she had already locked herself in the bathroom. He let out a deep sigh, aching at how hurt she was. The young boy pressed his palms and forehead on the door.

"June, please talk to me."

He could hear her breathing shakily. "Please, just go."

Maybe he should just go, maybe she needed alone time. But it didn't feel right.

"No. As your friend, I'm-I'm staying here until you tell me why you're sad."

There was a moment of silence before he heard her slide down the door. He did the same on the other side, letting his head hit the back of the door.

"I made a huge mistake."

"What is it?"

"Colton. He's...I feel like I don't even know him anymore."

She was full on sobbing now, letting all her emotions out. God, it was hard for him to even hear her in pain. And what did Colton do? Just thinking of all the possibilities made his blood boil.

"What did he do? You can tell me anything June."

She sniffled before clearing her throat. "He just-got so mad...I can't believe I ever trusted him, it's all my fault-"

"No, God no June, don't ever think that. He chose to be that way, not you. You just, got caught in the middle of it."

"He thought we were on a date."

Chandler's paused, eyes widening. He knew they were dating, but was he really that possessive? He always seemed like a chill dude.

"He...I've never seen him that mad before and all because I posted that dumb picture..."

"Don't blame yourself for his actions. He could've chosen to act normal, but he didn't. Maybe it's best if you stay away from him."

She let out another cry. "Yeah."

Chandler couldn't take it anymore. "Please let me in."

It took another few moments for her to collect herself before he heard the clicking noise of the door unlocking. He slid the door open, finding her snuggled up in the corner of the bathroom. Her cheeks were wet with tears, and her hair was in a mess of a ponytail.

She looked like a mess, but God, what a beautiful mess she was.

As soon as she saw his face, and tried to speak up again, her words caught in her throat and began sobbing into her arms that were wrapped around her knees.

Chandler crawled over, June letting him slide beside her. As he wrapped himself around her, she let her head fall into the crook of his neck, tears spilling down her face and onto his shirt. He didn't mind.

This is where she needed to be, and she hadn't realized it till her skin had touched his. She hadn't realized how much she craved him for comfort, for stability. Even if it felt like she could let out anything and everything she had in herself in that moment, she also felt ten times better.

Chandler felt better with June in his arms rather than behind a doorway. He felt better knowing she was comfortable letting herself go, letting her emotions run free in front of him.

Maybe they hadn't realized it in that moment, but they needed each other in a way that they didn't need anybody else.
