18. The Moon
달
JUNE WAS NOT A PERSON TO SHED A TEAR SO EASILY. It was a rather stupid occasion, it being a death of an animal in a random movie or just the sight of a good looking actor in a drama she loved so dearly. While in the outside world however, she would bottle up her feelings towards those around her, act as if nothing had even happened and as if things were just fine when in reality, nothing was really okay.
Not her, not her mind, not even her own heart.
Without noticing that her legs have given up on her, her whole weight came in touch with the cold pavement. Bringing her knees closer to her chest, she hadn't realized that her sniffing now turned into sobbing; and she couldn't stop herself anymore, letting whatever amount of tears there is to trickle down her cheeks.
She hadn't had a single care for the people around her, not even for the weirded out and pitiful glances shot right at her.
She couldn't care, not about something so foolish, something that wasn't as nearly as important as her close friend.
June felt so many eyes staring at her, watching her; the glances belonging to the people who were passing by. They would stop for a second but soon continue with their own lives. Though there was a weird feeling in her gut, something that she couldn't explain. It was as if someone was staring at her, not for a second but for a long time, their presence almost tangible in the late night air.
So she lifted her head up slightly, eyes meeting with a blurred outline of someone's body; a silhouette she would be able to recognize even if her own sight went blind.
''Jimin?'' Her soft voice cracked as she looked at the brown haired boy, who was still holding the flowers in his hand.
''Are you crying?''
''No?'' The girl replied, wiping off the tears with her palms in embarrassment. ''There's something in my eye.''
''June-ah.'' He dragged the syllables in her name as he sat beside her on the cold pavement. ''What happened? Tell me.''
But the girl ignored his question as she still hid her puffy eyes away from his glance. ''Did you see Jungkook, your friend? How is he doing?''
Jimin chuckled quietly, bowing his head down as his eyes almost disappeared behind his eyelids. ''Ah, I didn't visit him. I told you that Jungkookie wouldn't like the flowers and honestly, he'd be happier with a slice of pizza.''
Seeing that June still wouldn't turn her head to his direction as if she couldn't hear him speaking, Jimin sighed. ''I got worried. You left so abruptly which got me thinking that something might've been wrong, so I ran after you.''
June slightly shook her head, moving away the hair from her face as her sniffing became silent, though her eyes still unable to meet with his.
''Idiot.'' She muttered, a soft smile appearing on her face.
''Is that our thing now? Calling each other an idiot?''
''No.'' She looked him in the eyes, a wave of calmness rushing through her veins as soon as she saw his face. ''I really mean that you're an idiot. You left your best friend in the hospital, because of some stupid girl.''
If only she listened to the words that jumped out of her mouth so carelessly.
''First of all'', Jimin spoke up, lifting his index finger up in the air as if about to teach a lesson. ''A best friend is called a best friend for a reason. They don't judge your actions or question your excuses; they understand. And I'm sure Jungkookie won't mind the fact that I didn't show up today, I can easily just drop by tomorrow.''
A pause.
''And I'm sure your friend will understand as well.''
And somehow June felt at ease, but the ease still had a lot to go through if it wanted to beat the guilt building up inside of her.
''Second of all'', he now lowered his finger, his view travelling to the sight of the flowing river at a full moon. ''You're not some stupid girl.''
After that, he doesn't say much, none of them do as they keep enjoying the burbling of the water and the playful wind caressing their cheeks.
''June-ah'', but then he started, breaking the silence. ''There's that theater play happening at campus-''
''There is?'' She shot him a glare, eyes widening in confusion because she remembered that she lied about the play. There was no theater play at all. ''I mean yeah, of course there is. What about it?''
But Jimin, as if ignoring her sudden reaction, turned his head to look at her. ''I was wondering. Would it be weird if I entered as well? I did a research on it and I really like the story behind it. Would you be annoyed? I mean, we can practice together, if you'd like.''
June remained silent, her feet now hanging above the water, kicking the air. ''Why would I be annoyed? Besides, I haven't really done my research so I might not know what's the play actually about.''
She spoke softly, playfully moving her feet in hope that Jimin would ignore her last sentence but to her disaster, the last sentence was the only thing he payed attention to as he shot her a confused glare.
''You say that you've been wanting to get a role in a play you know nothing about?''
''Psst, don't tell anyone about it, okay?''
The boy let out a generous laugh, his eyes wrinkling up in crescents. ''Aish, June you're such an idiot.''
''I told you I'm a stupid girl, but you wouldn't believe me.'' She remarked, eyes travelling away from him to look in the distance. ''Tell me what's it about.''
''It's called The Moon Prince.'' He said, tilting his head back as if to look at the moonlight in front of him. ''It's about a prince who's unhappy with his life, so one day he decided to ask the moon for a favor to which the moon accepted to make three of his wishes come true.''
''Oh yeah?'' The tone in her voice raised up, a hint of excitement hiding behind it. ''What are the three wishes?''
''The moon decided to give him some money at first, and the prince agreed with it. He was happy for a week or so, but soon realized that the money seemed empty, almost valueless.''
He spoke, twirling the bouquet of daisies in between his fingers, as if looking for some kind of a mistake; a withered petal so he can remove it, make it perfect again; a perfectionist some might say. And that's exactly what Jimin is.
''So the second time, the prince asks the moon again for a favor, to which the moon gives him good looks. The swarming of both women and men didn't seem enough for the prince because he was still unhappy, wanting more.''
''Sounds like you.'' June interrupted the boy, the corner of her lips tugging up in a smile, unable to remain serious. ''The prince, he sounds exactly like you, being all narcissistic.''
''Hey!'' He laughed, bumping his shoulder into hers playfully. ''That's not true.''
''If you say so.''
''June, do you want to hear the rest of the story or not?''
''Sorry, sorry.'' She chuckled.
''Alright.'' Smiling brightly, he continued to speak. ''So the third time, the prince stares at the moon, once again asking for a favor to which the moon, this time, gives him love and affection in form of a princess. But the princess doesn't like the prince, seeing him as a materialist and a complete narcissist, she rejects the love from him and leaves him forever.''
June's smile lightly faded. She expected to hear the cliched version of a romance, but Jimin has once again deceived her expectations.
''The prince is now broken, and doesn't know what else to do so in hope of salvation, he asks the moon for a fourth favor but the moon doesn't hear his cries for help, it only remained a planet, another star in the sky. With completely shattered heart and soul, the prince remained alone; and one night, one a full moon, he decided to end his own life.''
''Well that's a stupid story.'' June mumbled, shaking her head.
''It's for the theater play.'' Jimin reminded. ''I don't know, it's not cliched and I like when things are different.''
Though her eyes only widened after the next sentence left her soft lips. ''If I had the chance, I wouldn't do that.''
''Do what?'' He sent her a weak smile.
''Leave the prince." She shrugged her shoulders. "If you were the prince, and I was the princess in the play, I wouldn't leave you like that.''
Jimin swiftly turned his head away from her. After hearing those words his face flared a dark shade of pink, unable to keep him self from grinning cheekily. It was a weird feeling both of them felt that night. A slight hint of rising heartbeats and blood pulsing within their bodies; if only their feelings were a thunder, tonight would be a storm.
Jimin's hand rested beside his lap, touching the cold pavement of the bridge as June's hand started edging towards his.
Now closer then ever, she could almost feel his presence, but doesn't dare to touch his hand.
Should she?
Before her mind could make up more thoughts, Jimin's hand touched hers, almost overlapping her slender fingers with his as they both remained silent, holding their breath.
And for some reason, her heart thumped heavily, it being a realization that she was slowly falling for the boy whose heart was as bright as the night's moonlight.
