16. Daises
데이지
JUNE'S BODY HAD QUICKLY melted into the seat. Just like her will to live, she completely disappeared from one's sight. Mentally, she had prayed to all the gods in the universe that Jimin hadn't seen her face. While still remaining hidden, she would playfully count til ten, before lifting her head up ever so slowly, eyes searching for the familiar boy holding flowers.
At first she didn't notice him because he wasn't standing there anymore, that's until she saw a mop of dark brown hair, along with a bouquet of flowers sticking out from the edge of his seat.
Were they for Boyoung?
It wasn't a bouquet filled with roses, rather one with bright white daises.
How ironic was it that just by looking at them, she had felt jealousy crawling up to her before she could keep it hidden.
Not even a minute had passed by and Jimin stood up from his seat in the front, swiftly almost disappearing from June's sight.
Does she go after him? Or does she wait for the next stop; to get to Taehyung?
With her mind pacing relentlessly and hands almost shaking with excitement, June had stood up from her seat as well, soon touching shoulders with unknown people entering the train. Once free, she was standing on the sidewalk, immediately hit with thousands of voices and many random faces. As a result, her anxiety spiked up, not because she had found herself imprisoned by society, but because she couldn't find the boy she ditched her best friend for.
Eyes drifting to the left, then quickly back to right.
And there he was; dressed in a pair of skinny jeans, and an oversized sweatshirt as he walked peacefully towards the little park just on the other side of the road.
With a big sigh taken in, June clenched her fists, realizing that what she was doing is considered crazy and stalker-like behavior, though she couldn't care less at that moment, letting the heart rule over her brain just this one time.
With a few elbows brushing against her, June was wriggling through the crowd, her view focused on the boy in front of her.
He soon crossed the road, now walking through a park with June carefully following behind his steps.
Before even noticing, her pacing soon turned into running, leaving her almost out of breath when she couldn't slow down. She couldn't stop her feet from running so quickly, so when Jimin stopped abruptly, her face and body both collided with him, almost causing the boy to fall over, with herself right on top of him.
As if he was waiting for something like this to happen, Jimin remained standing, keeping his balance as he held the flowers in one hand, while his other was wrapped around the waist of the silly girl bumping into him.
''Yah, what the-'' He yelled, but soon smiled widely when he recognized the person standing in front of him. ''Aish idiot, are you even stalking me now?''
''Oh my god, I am so sorry.'' She said, quickly regaining her balance as she took a few steps back, wishing for the mother earth to swallow her whole.
Jimin didn't say a word, he just let out a few giggles, his lips forming a smile that revealed his pearl white teeth. His front tooth, however, was a little bit crooked, which June hadn't noticed before. The adorable little detail made him even more attractive.
''It's alright, I don't mind seeing your face.'' His eyes disappeared behind his eyelids as he shared one of those adorable smiles. ''You seem to be in a hurry?''
''I was supposed to meet with a friend in a couple of minutes.''
''Ah.'' He said, nodding. ''Would you mind keeping me company? Just for a few minutes, because I need to deliver these flowers at the hospital. The visits start at 6, which tells me that I have about half an hour to kill.''
Hospital? So the flowers weren't for Boyoung after all?
She simply nodded, as he walked forward, sitting on one of the empty wooden benches scattered across the park.
No matter the fact that the park was swarming with people, a weird silence managed to take a seat just between the two of them.
With her hands against her lap, June bit her lips, tasting the cherry flavoured lipstick she put on this morning. Her eyes travelled to the bouquet in Jimin's hands, eagerly wanting to know for who they actually were.
''You said you were going to see a friend, right? Is he like a boyfriend or something?'' Weirdly enough, there was a hint of jealousy hidden behind his voice.
''T-taehyung? No!'' She laughed. ''He's a childhood friend. Someone I care about deeply.''
Then silence, again.
''You know'', Jimin began, ''I happen to have a friend like that as well. Someone I care about just as much.''
A pause.
''His name is Jungkook. In fact, these flowers are for him.''
For him?
''I'm visiting him at the hospital. Thought I should bring him some flowers even though I know he hates them.'' He laughed, but the laughter seemed empty, not much happiness hiding behind it. ''But I guess he's right. Flowers are pretty at first, but soon they start to wither, leaving only a memory of how they used to be pretty.''
While Jimin continued to speak, June had already started to mentally slap herself for being so uptight and shallow about everything. Why did she care so much about his relationship with Boyoung?
''June'', Jimin turned his head, dark brown eyes looking at her. ''That photograph we've talked about earlier, it was taken back in 2015.''
She doesn't know what to say to his words, so she just let him speak, as he delivered another one of his easy-going smiles, now completely opening up. As if she was a diary, waiting to be filled with the words of past, both harsh and soft like silk, Jimin had shared his secrets with her.
''It's a photo of Jungkook and I, one of my older friends must've taken it that night. I remember everything so vividly.'' His voice melted with the one's coming from the mass of people, but somehow Jimin's voice was the only thing June managed to hear.
''Jungkook was so drunk he actually tried to call a cab to take him home, despite the fact that the party was at his house; he was already home.''
Both of them shared a light laughter, the chirping of birds accompanying them as the sun was slowly hiding its rays of light.
''Ah Jungkookie, always had a thing for Boyoung.'' He shook his head. ''The three of us practically grew up together and she was always there for us, but as the time went on, I think Boyoung became something more to him than just a friend. But she didn't feel the same about him.''
''She didn't like him?''
''She did.'' He confirmed. ''As a brother, I guess, but nothing more.''
Taken by surprise, June's lips parted, waiting for Jimin to speak up just to ease her sudden confusion.
''Just a couple of months ago, Jungkook got his driver's licence, which was amazing until he decided to have a few cans of beer one night in a club just outside the city. He underestimated his alcohol tolerance, so after even one can, the guy was wasted. Boyoung was there as well and I guess they got into a fight. Some pretty harsh words were said, and he ended up driving that same night.''
June carefully followed the movements of his lips, as he took a big heavy sigh, something in his heart breaking a bit.
''Is he okay, Jimin?'' Her quiet voice was now the one breaking the silence. ''Is Jungkook okay?''
''Yeah.'' He swallowed audibly, his Adam's apple bouncing. ''But the doctors don't think he'll ever be able to walk again.''
The words hit June like a cold slap in the face, almost every syllable leaving her heart in pain as if she had gone through the same.
''We were heartbroken, all of us were.''
Somehow he had trouble finding the right words to say, but June didn't want to speak up in fear that she'll interrupt his racing thoughts.
''We were vulnerable that night. I was vulnerable, and for some reason Bo and I ended up being together. Not out of love, but out of sheer guilt. And god, I hate that photograph so much.'' He swallowed as if trying to prevent the cluster of tears from dripping down his cheeks.
''Jungkookie was so happy on that stupid polaroid. If he only knew how much I've ruined everything, not just for him, but for Boyoung as well. And I couldn't tell her, I just couldn't break her heart because I felt lonely and sad one night.''
Heart damped in agony, he clenched his fist to the point where his knuckles went white. So when June noticed that, her hand reached forward, grabbing his in a heartbeat. And when their hands touched, Jimin stiffened a little, as if her touch scared away the rattling of guilt from the pit of his stomach.
''Jimin'', she said, squeezing his hand as the guilt was less tangible in the late afternoon air. ''It's not your fault.''
